How could God let this happen? Doesn't Jesus know what I'm going through? Doesn't He care? The disciples may have felt this way in the midst of the storm. Have you ever been faced with the same questions?
Located in the historic Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta, Redeemer Community Church exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our words and our lives, to make disciples of Christ, and to live as people who are loved, accepted, and transformed
Today's Gospel reading is Mark's account of Jesus calming the storm while he and his disciples were sailing across the Sea of Galilee. The question the Disciples as Jesus is why he doesn't care that they are being swamped with water from the storm. We have all sorts of storms that swamp us, be it financial concerns, illnesses, and other that batter us each day. Fr. John's sermon focuses on the question of, "Does God even care, or is God even powerful enough to save us from these storms? The Scripture reference is Mark 4.35-41.

We're switching things up with a semester long series called "Q+A with Jesus." Each week, we'll be examining difficult questions found throughout scripture in a conversational style between two people. This week, Ally and Ashleigh kick things off by diving into Mark 4:35-39. A raging storm in the middle of the Sea of Galilee leads to the disciples asking Jesus, "Don't you care if we drown?" In the same way, the storms in our lives can make us wonder if Jesus even cares what's happening, but Ally and Ashleigh remind us that Jesus gets in the boat with us.
Pastor Tim Abina 1 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.” - Mark 2:18-22 (ESV)

Message from Pastor Bob Hooker on May 6, 2018
Driving seems like an obvious place where we are in control of our movement. So it makes a great place to practice getting used to the two of the most important concepts in achieving lasting peace and happiness: the ideas that we are neither a self nor a doer. We are doing this practice because, as counterintuitive as it sounds, the biggest names in the pantheon of great masters, from Lao Tzu to Buddha to Krishna to Jesus all tell us that we are not the one doing the doing in our life. This is a very deep and subtle teaching and one of the keys to realizing an end to suffering in our life. This podcast is about practice through guided meditation so we are not going to try to explain it. We are just going to practice it. But here are a few quotes so you don't have to take my word for it:“The wise person does nothing, yet leaves nothing undone” – Lao TzuYour true “Self, confused by the idea of an ‘I’, thus thinks, ‘I am the doer.’” – Krishna “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.” – Jesus"‘Don't be afraid! Stand still, and see what the LORD will do to save you today.’ - Moses "All things [and experiences] are thoughts which the Creator thinks... What a joy ... to perceive the unmoved mover moving in all that moves. He who is hidden, manifest through all his works." The Hermetica (The Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs)“Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit alone [all things are done]," says the Lord Almighty. - Book of Zechariah, Hebrew BibleIf you are interested in more of the theory and explanation around it you can listen to this Podcast's companion, the Serena Podcast series (https://goo.gl/Dxu4eo). February 26, 2017Amanda wraps up our Rulebreakers sermon series by asking the question "If legalism, social norms, and civil law all fall short... what then are the rules we should look to as we follow Jesus?" Don't miss this powerful message.note: we did not capture Adam's segment at the very end due to recording limitations. The synopsis of his segment is that he has chosen to do a vegetarian diet this Lenten season in response to a sense that his struggle with food and eating has hindered his relationship with God because it causes him to struggle with self-hatred.
Aaron Ivey continues our series on the hard sayings of Jesus by teaching on his command, "Don't be anxious" from Matthew 6:25-34.
Stories of Jesus - Don't get Discouraged
Ever have something that just feels like it has taken your life away? Ever need a friend to help you through a tough time? Ever wonder if something bad happens in your life...Does Jesus Care? There were many of these same questions in the times of Jesus on this earth. Martha asked Jesus "Don't you care?" And, one of the most memorable times that we can see this type of question is in Mark 4 when the disciples said "Teacher, don't You care that we are perishing?"What was the problem with the question? Listen to this lesson and set the stage for yourself, then see if you can identify why Jesus replied the way that He did when He said, "Why is it that you have no faith?"Please listen and share.
Don't worry about your life (Matthew 6:25-34).
While it is true that the New Testament does give us a fuller revelation of God, we dare not say that we read of a different God in the New Testament. The God we worship today is the same God worshipped by Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, John the Baptist, and Paul. However, passages such as the one we studied last - Hebrews 12:18-24 - often add to the confusion. The same God spoke both covenants into existence and therefore, we are to follow the instruction of our author in the passage where we find the fifth and final warning to his readers: "See that you do not refuse him who is speaking" (Heb 12:25). This great command is given once again in this letter and backed up with a terrifying warning to those who would refuse to heed it.

The only true and foolproof test of the validity of one's profession of faith is whether one perseveres in their faith for the duration of his or her life. To put it simply, genuine faith endures. Genuine faith lasts. A "faith" that does not endure to the end of life was not a genuine faith from the beginning. One of the means that God has provided for the perseverance of his children is the issuance of severe warnings and encouraging exhortations. The entire letter of Hebrews was written for this purpose. The timeless nature of this text jumps from the pages of the Bible. Every Christian in every age has needed both warning and encouragement. We need to be challenged to live in the light of God's wrath and encouraged to live in the strength of God's promises. We need reminders of the past, promises for the future, and warnings and exhortations for the present. These will carry us through the Christian life.

The writer of Hebrews is a pastor at heart and he will not engage in reckless pastoral care. He loves this particular flock too much to let some of them slowly drift away without telling them the painful truth. He writes harshly at times to fulfill his commission as a shepherd. In fact, this strong concern for his people motivated him to write the letter to the Hebrews and include several warnings, admonitions, and exhortations. He was not afraid to "get in their face" and speak the truth in love. This particular chapter, perhaps the most controversial in the entire letter, is one of those times.

The 2007 New England Patriots are widely considered the best team in the history of professional football. They won every single game in the regular season. However, they lost in the Super Bowl and, therefore, they failed in their ultimate goal. Just like in the sports world, it is possible for people to "perform" well in the church and yet fail to cross the finish line. The author of Hebrews is concerned that some of his readers might be a "rocky soil" type that reveals his faith insufficient to withstand persecution and tribulation. The author knows that true faith is a faith that obviously has a beginning point but also one that endures to the very end of life. The gospel of Jesus Christ calls on believers not only to start the Christian life but also to finish well by the grace of God. In fact, the Bible declares that only those who do finish the race can properly be called believers. In this lesson, we see that unbelief is not a passive non-response to God but an active response that deserves punishment. Because of this, the readers are urged to keep on believing.

Based on the theology presented in the first chapter, the author makes his case that Jesus Christ is worth following regardless of what perceived threats or actual persecution might come into your life. Jesus is worth following no matter what happens to you, your spouse, your children, or your possessions. People undergoing intense oppression and internal struggles do not need religious platitudes. Instead, the author's love for his readers drives him to tell them the pointed truth - even if that truth stings a little. For the author, the truth is written in the form of five strong warnings strategically placed throughout this letter. These warnings are not hollow threats to arouse fears in his readers. The warnings are not hypothetical scenarios that have no real impact on the readers' lives. The warnings are trumpet-blasts to awaken in his readers the drive to understand, heed, apply, and live in the safety of what he has just taught them and will continue to teach them in the rest of this letter.

2009-09-13-1800 Pastor Loran Livingston is the speaker this evening September 13th, 2009 in the 6:00 PM service. Ref: Galatians 5:16; II Thessalonians 2:10-12 Topic: Sin Notes:- We're frustrated because we don't center everything on Jesus- Don't believe you can be saved during tribulation... reserved for Jewish people- We're under grace; a day will come that grace will end- Spirit of delusion- Sin has lost the stigma; we tolerate sin in the world an in our lives- If you walk in the Spirit you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh- Daniel purposed himself not to sin; make up your mind before you get there- Giving more to anything than Jesus is idolatry- Anything that influences you away from Spirit is flesh
