I wouldn't say I have a love hate relationship with casting, but I would say it's complicated. On one hand it feels like I really need to gear up for it mentally because each time is an experiment and it's a long process. But when it works, which thankfully has been more often than not, I'm left with a handful of shiny things to weave into my work. On the days I've felt a little more blocked, I've sat at my bench and carved crude rings from wax and it's honestly quite cathartic. Maybe one day I will cast them, but I'm a hand fabricator at heart. My guest today is Christina Michie, and she (on the other hand) has wax and molten silver running through her veins. An accomplished metalsmith, her curiosity to learn as much as she could about the craft led her to wax carving and casting. Initially for herself, but she quickly discovered that other jewelers wanted to purchase her castings to incorporate in their work and Creative Casting was born. I really enjoyed talking with Christina and her enthusiasm for the craft and for learning. We talk about the impact of personal experiences on creativity and the challenge of balancing multiple creative pursuits. Christina shares her insights on navigating social media, reducing overwhelm with good organization and focus, finding her niche in the jewelry industry, and managing burnout. Follow Christina... Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Take the wheel, Shoggoth! (Lesswrong is trying out changes to the frontpage algorithm), published by Ruby on April 23, 2024 on LessWrong. For the last month, @RobertM and I have been exploring the possible use of recommender systems on LessWrong. Today we launched our first site-wide experiment in that direction. (In the course of our efforts, we also hit upon a frontpage refactor that we reckon is pretty good: tabs instead of a clutter of different sections. For now, only for logged-in users. Logged-out users see the "Latest" tab, which is the same-as-usual list of posts.) Why algorithmic recommendations? A core value of LessWrong is to be timeless and not news-driven. However, the central algorithm by which attention allocation happens on the site is the Hacker News algorithm[1], which basically only shows you things that were posted recently, and creates a strong incentive for discussion to always be centered around the latest content. This seems very sad to me. When a new user shows up on LessWrong, it seems extremely unlikely that the most important posts for them to read were all written within the last week or two. I do really like the simplicity and predictability of the Hacker News algorithm. More karma means more visibility, older means less visibility. Very simple. When I vote, I basically know the full effect this has on what is shown to other users or to myself. But I think the cost of that simplicity has become too high, especially as older content makes up a larger and larger fraction of the best content on the site, and people have been becoming ever more specialized in the research and articles they publish on the site. So we are experimenting with changing things up. I don't know whether these experiments will ultimately replace the Hacker News algorithm, but as the central attention allocation mechanism on the site, it definitely seems worth trying out and iterating on. We'll be trying out a bunch of things from reinforcement-learning based personalized algorithms, to classical collaborative filtering algorithms to a bunch of handcrafted heuristics that we'll iterate on ourselves. The Concrete Experiment Our first experiment is Recombee, a recommendations SaaS, since spinning up our RL agent pipeline would be a lot of work.We feed it user view and vote history. So far, it seems that it can be really good when it's good, often recommending posts that people are definitely into (and more so than posts in the existing feed). Unfortunately it's not reliable across users for some reason and we've struggled to get it to reliably recommend the most important recent content, which is an important use-case we still want to serve. Our current goal is to produce a recommendations feed that both makes people feel like they're keeping up to date with what's new (something many people care about) and also suggest great reads from across LessWrong's entire archive. The Recommendations tab we just launched has a feed using Recombee recommendations. We're also getting started using Google's Vertex AI offering. A very early test makes it seem possibly better than Recombee. We'll see. (Some people on the team want to try throwing relevant user history and available posts into an LLM and seeing what it recommends, though cost might be prohibitive for now.) Unless you switch to the "Recommendations" tab, nothing changes for you. "Latest" is the default tab and is using the same old HN algorithm that you are used to. I'll feel like we've succeeded when people switch to "Recommended" and tell us that they prefer it. At that point, we might make "Recommended" the default tab. Preventing Bad Outcomes I do think there are ways for recommendations to end up being pretty awful. I think many readers have encountered at least one content recommendation algorithm that isn't givi...

I literally thought we were going to die… ❗️NEW EPISODE ALERT! This special episode is all about seizing control and steering your life in the direction YOU choose. Recently, a hair-raising cab ride with my daughter Bella turned into much more than a moment of heart-pounding fear; it became a profound lesson about life's unexpected turns and who's really in the driver's seat. That ride wasn't just scary; it was a stark reminder of the chaos we invite into our lives when we let others take control. When we finally escaped that cab, the ordeal didn't end there. The driver's next turn led to a crash – a literal collision that echoed the potential disasters we face when we surrender our power to others. Reflecting on that day, I realized it was more than just a bad ride; it was a metaphor for life. Too often, we sit back, not questioning, not asserting, letting someone else steer our course. And where does that lead? To situations, relationships, or decisions that we never wanted, putting everything precious at risk. In this episode, we're going deep into what it means to truly audit your thinking, to understand the emotions and fears driven by others' actions and opinions. It's about dissecting those feelings, understanding the 'why' behind them, and most importantly, reclaiming your rightful place at the wheel of your life! We often cruise in the passenger seat of our existence, not realizing the power we have to change lanes, to speed up, to slow down, to choose our destination. It's time to grab that wheel, to drive with purpose and intent, and to ensure that the journey of life is one that YOU dictate. Don't let your life be a series of reckless rides, where the cost is too high, and the risks too great. Tune in, take control, and transform your journey into one of intention, direction, and ultimate fulfillment. The road is yours – TAKE THE WHEEL. Learn more about your ad choices. It's the SNOW Highway Option finale episode! We're playing with all of our Transformers that we unwrapped under the tree. I bet our pretend storylines were just as cohesive as what Michael Bay cooked up. Because, honestly, who isn't nostalgic for Optimus Prime in some fashion? Join them as they answer such questions as: Can our inner child overtake a movie being bad? Does this movie have a prime demographic? Should Transformers be able to swim? How does this compare to the six(?!) other Transformers flicks? and How Bumblebee do that with his radio? among many others... Thank you for coming on, Chris! Sam Abidi, Chief Commercial Officer, Monarch Tractor joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss Monarch's autonomous MK-V tractor and how the growing labor shortages are accelerating the adoption of autonomous tractors on farms around the world. The conversation begins with Sam discussing how Monarch Tractor is approaching autonomy. From day one we were thinking about how you could build an autonomy kit that could go on a tractor, that can essentially reach a price point that most farmers can use, and where we landed is that you need to do a bottom up build of the tractor — that tractor is called the MK-V. – Sam AbidiWith the global economy shifting to a labor light economy, due to a growing labor shortage, autonomy applications on farms is rapidly accelerating. If you actually go talk to some of our farmers, many of them are coming to us because it is an alternative to having no one do that job. – Sam AbidiMonarch takes a farmer frugal approach to autonomy as they know every dollar counts on a farm. The farmer frugal approach enables Monarch to charge farmers $800 a month to unlock the autonomous capabilities of the $90,000 MK-V tractor, which is less the equivalent labor cost. In the future as the model evolves, Monarch is exploring the possibility of introducing a tractor-as-a-service model for select regions around the world. If this model comes to fruition, Monarch will not hold the asset (tractor) on their balance sheet. Instead they will look to a partner to hold the assets (tractor) as it is not an effective use of their capital to hold tractors on their balance sheet.Today, Monarch has a financial services agreement with CNH Industrial Capital America to provide financing for the MK-V tractor. The Monarch MK-V is an all-electric tractor with a swappable battery that can run 14-hours. Financing is an important part of farm economics. – Sam AbidiWhen a Monarch tractor is deployed on a farm, farmers control all the applications of the autonomous tractor with their proprietary WingspanAI digital platform. If you automate a tractor and you have a dozen tractors or two dozen tractors running the farm and then you connect those to a digital platform, that essentially tracks everything from when they are dispatched to what they are doing to how well they are doing it, you have essentially digitized the farm. – Sam AbidiThe data that Monarch's autonomous tractors are gathering will enable the company to create new revenue streams in the future by monetizing the rich amount of data that the tractors gather on a daily basis. To scale, Monarch has a partnership with Foxconn to manufacturer the MK-V at their Ohio facility. The decision to engage Foxconn for manufacturing was made from the lessons that the founders learned from their years in the automotive industry. Wrapping up the conversation, Sam shares his vision for the future of Monarch Tractor.Recorded on Tuesday, November 7, 2023--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles and logistics.
