The Future Strategy of Audio Branding: A Conversation with Adam Pleiman - Part 2

“I think there's a responsibility to know that if you're emotionally connecting people, if you know that we have the power to persuade, in a way, that is, that wields real results and real people, like let's not manipulate, you know? Let's make sure that that's an authentic thing that needs, that you're creating and you're not driving something fake. You're not driving, because it's gonna be, it's gonna be, they're gonna smoke it out anyway at some point in time. It's not gonna work.” -- Adam Pleiman This episode's the second half of my conversation with Grammy-nominated engineer, producer, musician, and Play Audio Agency creative director Adam Pleiman, as we talk about how he's working to make the world sound better, about the surprising role ASMR played in Play Audio's recent Sport Clip ad campaign, and the importance of honesty when it comes to consumers. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit www.audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available. And if you're getting some value from listening, feel free to spread that around and share it with a friend, along with leaving an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. A Better-Sounding PlaceThe second half of our discussion starts as Adam talks about what he considers his evolving mission as an audio creator. “Our mission,” he says, “is to make the world a better-sounding place.” We talk about the boundaries he believes should be maintained for the sake of respecting his audience. “There are certain things,” Adam explains, “that we will draw a line on and certain things we won't do because it would be irresponsible and hurtful to the industry.” He tells us how he brings all the different parts of a company's brand and the audio resources at his disposal into a cohesive sonic identity, and how rewarding it is to see everything come together. “I mean,” he says, “it gives me goosebumps to think that it's that much more effective when it's all tied in across the board, you know?” What No One Else Is DoingWe talk about one particularly recent and successful example, the now-famous ASMR audio spot for Sport Clips, and how the idea grew from its first inspiration to an acclaimed finished product. “It was an interesting challenge,” Adam tells us, “to go, well, ‘what's unique? You know, what are you doing that no one else is doing?' Do they have unique sounds? And what can we do to illustrate those to a listener?” We listen to a clip and talk a bit about the process of creating an authentic ASMR experience, and how it worked to bolster Sport Clips' brand recognition. “The stats on it were outstanding as a brand lift,” he says. “Brand awareness had like a 15% jump. It was outstanding.” The Ocean for MeAs the episode comes to a close, Adam tells us what he sees in store for the future of audio branding, and how, with the U.S. market historically lagging but quickly catching up, there's a lot of opportunity for marketing innovation. “We're on the growth side now in the States,” he says, “and we're on awareness and an education push in the States. But once we get over that hump, it's gonna be the same as the visual side.” He shares how he sees audio branding following the same trajectory as visual branding in decades past, and his sense of...

One of the most surprising characteristics of God is His relaxed playfulness. This is what innately draws children to Him and what draws the child in us to Him. Where so many adults had difficult childhoods or no real childhood at all, God wants to restore the child in us and the child-likeness in how we look at Him, life and one another. You not only can afford to play, but God wants to heal, revive and restore in play. Join me for this happy, freeing message! Stay connected to receive more free ministry resources every day! This article says that the report “exposes the limits [of] the #MeToo movement has met inside the federal bureaucracy.” The limits of the #metoo movement… The article continues: The Federal Emergency Management Agency's problems extend beyond proper handling of complaints, as a survey of its workforce exposed a potentially pervasive hostile work environment, according to a report issued this month by the Homeland Security Department's inspector general. "One-third (255 of 765) of the employees who responded to our questionnaire indicated they had experienced sexual harassment or sexual misconduct, but they did not report it because they did not believe the allegations would be investigated," the inspector general reported. "Unaddressed sexual harassment and sexual misconduct in the workplace can have negative effects on employees, including decreased performance, low morale, and increased turnover," the report added [stating the screaming obvious.] They also noted that if you can't breathe it is not conducive to a long life. Also from the report: "The agency mustered a poor response to the flood of allegations," investigators said. These people are hilarious. Get it? Flood of allegations? FEMA? Hurricanes and floods and... "We were unable to determine whether FEMA properly handled 153 of these allegations, because it could not provide complete investigative and disciplinary files," the report said. "For allegations that had complete files available, at times we were unable to determine whether FEMA conducted an investigation. Finally, we found FEMA did not document whether it reviewed some sexual harassment-related Equal Employment Opportunity complaints to determine whether potential employee misconduct occurred." Look, I don't really trust the report -- since I have little confidence that biblical standards for evidence, testimony, and witnesses were follwed , but I do know that we live in a debauched culture, where public school sex education courses encourage pagan kids to do whatever feels good, and then we are somehow shocked when they grow up and do just that. I mean is Darwin right or not? Are we just highly evolved animals or not? 1:11-1:18 But of course rather than completely defunding FEMA as we ought to and letting the states and counties take care of themselves, we will no doubt create another government agency that is tasked with studying the sex habits of government employees. I actually do think this is tied to youth group mission trip culture. While I don't object to very carefully crafted mission trips, I'm generally against the whole lot because I think there's a high degree of likelihood that a bunch of hormonal teenagers can actually do a lot more harm than good. And I also think that those who are most invested in a community are in the best position to help their own communities. They have to live with the results of all their help. I mean I really do feel for Haiti-- for example. But we should all be looking at Haiti as a cautionary tale. How many millions were poured into that country after the earthquakes? And how's it doing? A complete mess? Right. Ditto for FEMA. Guitar AD Have you always wanted to play guitar but didn't know where to start? Doug Wilson Responds to the Maricopa County Audit https://dougwils.com/books-and-culture/s7-engaging-the-culture/maricopa-pudding.html “So I will look sideways—squinty-eyed and scowling—at this particular election to my dying day. And I will do so with sunshine in my conscience. Anomalies do require explanation. As Thoreau once put it, “Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk.” You know, like a turtle on top of a fence post. When you are driving down a country road, and you happen to see a turtle on top of a fence post, the situation is clear, and the first thing that comes to mind is President Biden. You understand he didn't get there by himself, he really doesn't belong there, he doesn't know what to do as long as he's up there, and all you want to do is help the poor little guy get down. This election in Maricopa is like that. Not everything in this mess goes together. It is like you went to dig into your vanilla Maricopa pudding, made fresh just this morning, and you discover that it is resting on a bed of cole slaw.” Pastor Wilson also linked to this doozy of a conversation that happened in Maricopa County regarding the deleted/archived files from the voting machines that audit did not have access to. Play Audio: 0:00-1:54 When the voting machine records were subpoenaed, they just deleted/archived certain files and figured that the subpoena didn't apply to those records. Bring back my laugh track: HAHAHAHA! Former Pentagon Softwar Chief Says China Has Won the Tech War https://nypost.com/2021/10/11/pentagon-software-chief-nicolas-chaillan-resigns/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=NYPTwitter&utm_medium=SocialFlow From the New York Post: The Pentagon's former software chief said he quit because China has already won the tech war guaranteeing global dominance — with some US government systems mere “kindergarten level” in comparison. Nicolas Chaillan, 37, told the Financial Times on Sunday that there is “good reason to be angry” at the US failing to rise to China's cyber threat, even fearing that it puts his children's future at risk. “We have no competing fighting chance against China in 15 to 20 years. Right now, it's already a done deal; it is already over, in my opinion,” Nicolas Chaillan, 37, told the paper. Chaillan — who was the Pentagon's first chief software officer — said China will dominate the future of the world by controlling everything from media narratives to geopolitics. He claimed that the US, like Beijing, should have prioritized artificial intelligence, machine learning and cyber capabilities over traditional military spending like building new fighter jets. “Whether it takes a war or not is kind of anecdotal,” he told the paper of his prediction of China's route to future world dominance. He attacked Google for not working on AI with the US Defense Department, while Chinese companies are obliged to work with Beijing. The US is also wasting time debating the ethics of AI while China makes “massive investment” and eschews such concerns, he said. Some US government cyber-defense systems are so dated, they are merely at “kindergarten level,” he insisted. “While we wasted time in bureaucracy, our adversaries moved further ahead,” Chaillan wrote in a scathing letter on LinkedIn last month when first announcing his resignation. “At this point, I am just tired of continuously chasing support and money to do my job,” he said of the pioneering Pentagon job that was “probably the most challenging and infuriating of my entire career.” Chaillan told the Financial Times that he plans in the coming weeks to testify to Congress about the Chinese cyber threat to US supremacy, including in classified briefings. [This] comes as a new poll shows that about 9 in 10 Americans are at least somewhat concerned about hacking, while about two-thirds say they are very or extremely concerned. The poll by the Pearson Institute and the Associated Press shows that roughly three-quarters also eye the Chinese and Russian governments as major threats to the cybersecurity of the US government. I mean, if we put this together with what we've already covered on today's newsbrief, there are troubling trends. Maricopa county voting officials have no concerns about deleting (I mean archiving) files before turning them over to an audit. And our Federal Emergency Management Agency cannot even manage the emergency of sexual misconduct in its own ranks. Put that together, and how likely does it seem that some of our governmental tech programs are kindergarten level compared to China? I would say the chances are pretty high. Remember Solomon: when he went in for all the sex, he had to build altars and shrines for all the gods of his wives and concubines. Instead of using his strength to continue to build productive and useful things, his strength was used to destroy his family and nation. Is America strong? Sure. But we are pouring our strength down the tubes. But let's not end on a sour note. Remember God is God, and this is His world. China's so-called strength isn't real strength either. As it happens, pure coercive power will crush LGBT flower power every day of the week, but both are false versions of power. Neither will ultimately work. Both are parasitic on Christian virtues. Both have to assume certain creational realities are real and true. They have to deny Darwin and believe that there is order and goodness in the universe in order to maintain a semblance of coherence. Joe Biden on the Vaccines and more on today's CrossPolitic Daily News Brief This is Toby Sumpter. Today is Tuesday, August 31, 2021. Oregon Law Prohibits Vaccine Mandates https://www.kgw.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/oregon-hospitals-cannot-mandate-vaccines-employees/283-1c73f5fc-ffcf-4f10-af20-7aabeb74d3c5 Hospitals in Oregon cannot require doctors, nurses or any of their employees to be vaccinated for anything from the flu to COVID-19. It's been this way since 1989, when a law was passed stating "an employee shall not be required as a condition of work to be immunized under this section." The Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS) said it's long overdue for a rule change. "We believe that it's important for hospitals to have that tool during a pandemic. Not that they all would, but just to have that option to require staff, to be vaccinated during a pandemic, we just think it's really important to have that local option," said OAHHS spokesman Dave Northfield. "We believe that the state could write a rule that gives individual hospitals local control to institute a mandate that falls short of a statewide mandate," said Northfield. OHA said the change that would allow hospitals to decide would have to come from the legislature. OHA Communication Director Robb Cowie said the only rule they could pass would be a statewide mandate. One group against a law change is the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA). ONA Communication Director Scott Palmer released a statement that said in part: "We are not currently seeking a change in Oregon's statutes regarding workplace immunizations. We believe there is much more work corporations can do to protect workers and increase vaccination rates before they begin firing working Oregonians during a pandemic." KGW Investigates could not find any other state with a law that prohibits hospitals from requiring vaccines for their employees. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/hospitals-vaccine-requirements-oregon-law/283-a734746a-49d4-4c15-9e3f-904d4556f81e — Kaiser Permanente, PeaceHealth and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) will require employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, despite a 1989 Oregon law that prohibits hospitals from doing so as a condition of employment. "I think that law is certainly a barrier. I think we're looking at this as a public health emergency. We're hoping to have some support from our government officials...we are calling this a requirement, there are ways for there to be a medical exemption," said Dr. Koekkoek. The deadline for employees to get vaccinated varies by organization. PeaceHealth is requiring all caregivers to be fully vaccinated by Aug. 31. OHSU is targeting Sept. 1 for its staff and students and Kaiser Permanente hopes to have its workforce fully vaccinated by Sept. 30. It's unclear what action, if any, hospitals will take against employees who are not vaccinated or exempt by the proposed deadlines. High School in Washington State Using Ankle Monitors https://www.iheart.com/content/2021-08-25-high-school-uses-ankle-monitors-to-track-social-distancing-of-athletes/ A high school in Washington state is facing criticism after equipping student-athletes with ankle monitors to track social distancing during practices. The students only have to wear them during practice and leave them in the locker room when they go home. [They are only prisoners when they are playing the game.] The monitors are being used as part of the district's contact tracing program. They record how close students get to each other and for how long. In the event of a positive COVID-19 test among students, health officials can quickly identify who had close contact with the infected individual. Officials with the Eatonville School District have defended using the "proximity monitors" against backlash from parents and other people online. "The monitors are for both staff (coaches) and students on the field, regardless if they are vaccinated or unvaccinated. If a student or coach tests positive, we will have immediate information regarding athletes' and coaches' contacts, so we can more tightly determine who might need to quarantine," the district said in a statement. [This is called Totalitarian grooming, people. Getting you used to be monitored at all times.] One parent said he was reluctant about letting the school put an ankle monitor on his son but didn't want to keep him from playing football. [Reluctant?!!] "I was notified if I didn't sign it, they couldn't play," Jason Ostendorf told the Tacoma News Tribune. "My son has played football since he was in third grade. He's passionate about the sport. ... I signed it reluctantly. It's either that or he doesn't play. ... It's not optional. If you don't sign the waiver, they don't get to play. You have no choice in the matter." "It's just one more thing they're doing to the kids through this whole covid thing," he added. "The vaccine, now be tracked when you're at practice. Where does this end? I feel like this is an experiment on our kids to see how much we can put them through before they start breaking." Another parent said he had no problem with the school using the ankle monitors. "It's a continuation of doing what we have to do to let the boys play a sport that they love," Jason Lewis told KCPQ. "If my son would have told me, "Dad, I don't want to wear it. I'm not going to wear it,' He wouldn't be playing football. That's his choice. I mean, but he wanted to play football. He would have worn three of them if you asked him to." And… there are your gods, America. Doing what we have to do to let the boys play a sport they love…. Ah, but what is a boy anyway? Screw your freedom and more on today's CrossPolitic Daily News Brief This is Toby Sumpter. Today is Friday, August 13, 2021. Government-Funded Researchers Sought Aborted Minorities for Organ Harvesting https://freebeacon.com/policy/taxpayer-fund-aborted-babies-research/ The federal government gave at least $2.7 million in taxpayer money to researchers who sought out minority babies who had been aborted in order to harvest their organs, according to internal documents released Tuesday. The University of Pittsburgh targeted minorities in its request for infant organs—including those taken from full-term babies—to create a "pipeline" for fetal research. Researchers said they needed 50 percent of the donated fetuses to be minorities and specified that 25 percent must come from black women. The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is 85 percent white and 8 percent black. Researchers stressed the importance of maintaining organ blood flow in the request, which watchdogs say could violate federal law by asking doctors to illegally preserve organs during labor-inducing abortions. The National Institutes of Health has overseen experiments on fetal organs at the University of Pittsburgh since 2015 in what the school claimed to be a "tissue hub." Aborted babies used in this research ranged from 6 to 42 weeks of gestation, according to government documents. The grant request from the university to the government agency redacts key information, including how many fetuses were obtained and who provided them. Its language, however, raised troubling questions. David Daleiden, founder and president of the pro-life Center for Medical Progress, called on the federal government to investigate the NIH and Pitt after obtaining more than 300 pages of information related to the program through a public records request. The University of Pittsburgh has been involved in fetal organ research for more than a decade. It conducted an experiment in 2020 that implanted the scalps of aborted fetuses onto lab mice in a study that was funded by Dr. Anthony Fauci's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The grant proposal boasts of the institution's experience handling a variety of fetal organs, including the liver, heart, legs, brain, kidneys, and bladders. The university outlined its goal of becoming a "pipeline" for fetal organ research, which would mean not only conducting this research but providing organs for other institutions to experiment on. The NIH did not respond to a request for comment. On Twitter, Nate Fischer shared this story but also pointed out the fact that Francis Collins ran the NIH during this time. Fischer: “He was widely celebrated as an example of sort of “faithful presence” so many educated and successful Christians have been told to aspire to. I'm sure @NIHDirector is a thoughtful Christian, personally opposed this, wouldn't choose to do it in a perfect world, is wrestling with the challenges of Christian leadership in an elite secular institution, etc. But the fact is the NIH funded a project that actively sought aborted fetuses to perform research on under Collins's leadership. That Collins did not stop this highlights the impotence cultivated by the “faithful presence” approach promoted in so many elite-adjacent evangelical circles. Here, the result was actually grimmer than simple failure to achieve impact: as head of the NIH, Collins played a role in funding this research. Through a career celebrated as a shining example of ‘faithful presence' he became an active participant in a grotesque evil. If Christians aren't going to develop doctrines that actually prepare them to fight against evils in the institutions they help lead, perhaps it's better – for the sake of their souls – that they don't even venture into these institutions.” Francis Collins is the founder of BioLogos – a Christian evolutionary science resource. He has also led the Human Genome Project in addition to the NIH. In 2006, he wrote the best-selling book The Language of God in which he tells his journey from atheism to Christian belief, showing that science is not in conflict with the Bible. But clearly Dr. Collins, despite having converted to Christianity, is still a very confused man. Speaking of Experts, Arnold Says Screw Your Freedom Play Audio: 1:20-2:14 Why would we not believe somebody like Dr. Fauci? I don't know, maybe because he's been funding the dissection and experimentation on murdered babies? Play Audio: 2:30-3:11 Screw your freedom. Hawley's amendment, but everything in me grimaces. It sounds like some kind of funding program for local police departments, but the last thing we need is more Federal funding. Remember federal dollars are federal chains. When you take the King's coin, you become the King's man. The last thing we want are federalized police forces, with the president running our local police. This may not be happening this minute, but the more money you take the more they will have to say. I've generally appreciated Sen. Hawley, but this makes me nervous. Rand Paul and Dr. Fauci from around May 11.  Just so you know what's going on, “gain of function” according to the National Institute of Health is “experimentation that aims or is expected to (and/or, perhaps, actually does) increase the transmissibility and/or virulence of pathogens. Such research, when conducted by responsible scientists, usually aims to improve understanding of disease causing agents, their interaction with human hosts, and/or their potential to cause pandemics. So here's Rand Paul sparring with Dr. Fauci last month: Play Audio: 0:00- 1:18 And now… As part of a FOIA request from BuzzFeed, more than 3,000 emails from Dr. Anthony Fauci's inbox were published online late Tuesday night. These emails bring many interesting revelations to light. For example, zoologist Peter Daszak once thanked Fauci for pushing back on the theory that the coronavirus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). At the time, Daszak was especially interested in killing the story since his non-profit had previously steered U.S. funding to the WIV. “I just wanted to say a personal thank you on behalf of our staff and collaborators, for publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 from a bat-to-human spillover, not a lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Daszak wrote to Fauci on April 19, 2020. “From my perspective, your comments are brave, and coming from your trusted voice, will help dispel the myths being spun around the virus's origins,” Daszak goes on. Daszak was correct in that Fauci's public rejection of the lab-leak theory did dispel the conversation. Once Fauci and like-minded politicians called the theory a conspiracy promulgated by then-president Donald Trump, the story was banned from social media and anyone who dared to bring it up was dismissed as a dangerous conspirator who probably supports QAnon. However, Daszak was also wrong because the idea that the SARS-CoV-2 originated from the WIV is not a myth. Mounting evidence suggests the virus did not originate from a Chinese wet market, the story we were told to believe for over a year. Between 2014 and 2019, EcoHealth Alliance, Daszak's organization, funneled $3.4 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to the WIV to study coronaviruses in bats. The five-year grant was renewed for a total of $3.7 million in 2019, but then canceled in April 2020 when Donald Trump said the research didn't align with the NIH's “program goals and agency priorities.” What was that money actually used for? Fauci says that funding did not go to what is known as “gain of function” research, which takes a virus that could infect humans and makes it more transmissible and/or pathogenic for humans. Last week, the WSJ revealed that three researchers from the WIV were hospitalized in November 2019 with symptoms mirroring COVID-19. Remember: Beijing says the first confirmed case of COVID-19 came less than a month later, on Dec. 8, 2019. Fauci's emails also show NIH scientists stating that the SARS-CoV-2 genome likely did not evolve naturally. These emails are dated February 2020. On April 17, 2020, Fauci told a reporter who asked him to address concerns that the coronavirus could have leaked from a lab: “There was a study recently…where a group of highly qualified evolutionary virologists looked at the sequences there and the sequences in bats as they evolve,” Fauci said. “The mutations that it took to get to the point where it is now is totally consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human.” Here's what was privately said two months before: Clay Travis @ClayTravis Wow, NIH scientists were emailing back in February of 2020, February!, that the covid virus genome didn't look like it could have arisen naturally. Yet Fauci said the opposite publicly. Of course. It's way past time for Fauci to be gone and he needs to be investigated himself. Then last month, Fauci finally admitted he was “not convinced” that the coronavirus developed naturally. That was a major shift from his year-long insistence that it's “highly likely” that the origin was natural… If the lab-leak theory is proven correct — which would be difficult to do without China's cooperation — the probability is high that China knew, covered it up, refused to allow its doctors to notify the rest of the world, and undercounted deaths to save face. Meaning, China would be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people across the world. Within a week after China released the genomic sequencing, the mRNA sequencing for the COVID vaccine was completed. Had China been honest from the start, in November 2019, the vaccine would've been released sooner. One tourism official said the “estimated lost economic impact” from the relocation will have a more than $100 million impact on the state. And the Jobs Creators Network doesn't want to let the organization get away with it.  A small business advocacy organization filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Major League Baseball, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the Major League Baseball Players Association and executive director Tony Clark. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by the Job Creators Network. The suit demands the Major League Baseball All-Star Game return to Atlanta immediately or the "defendants pay $100 million in damages to local and state small businesses." (ABC 6) “MLB robbed the small businesses of Atlanta – many of them minority-owned – of $100 million, we want the game back where it belongs,” said Alfredo Ortiz, president and CEO of the Job Creators Network. “This was a knee-jerk, hypocritical and illegal reaction to misinformation about Georgia's new voting law which includes Voter-ID. Major League Baseball itself requests ID at will-call ticket windows at Yankee Stadium in New York, Busch Stadium in St. Louis and at ballparks all across the country.” As a result of the relocation, JCN gave the following figures: • More than 8000 hotel reservations were canceled. • Revenues from ticket sales, concessions and events at Truist Park – including the Futures Game and Home Run Derby Contest – by the more than 41,000 fans expected, were lost. • According to Cobb County Chief Financial Officer William Volckmann, the county would receive a “robust return” on its roughly $2 million investment to host the events. Previous MLB All-Star events have generated between $37 million and $190 million for their host communities. • Atlanta is 51% African-American, Denver is 9% African-American. U.S. Census data indicates there are roughly 7.5 times more African-American-owned businesses in Georgia than Colorado. “Small businesses in this community had valid contracts relating to the All-Star Game and other events, the result of two years of planning and all that was ripped away by fear and misinformation spewed by political activists," Ortiz said. Many states, including Colorado where the game has been moved to, have similar or more restrictive election laws. This move essentially tells fans of teams in many other cities that they can never again host the All-Star Game; it's hypocritical, illegal and we won't stand for it.” This is a good move for Major League Baseball and the people of Atlanta. 8, 2019. 19Nine Classic Michigan State vs. Indiana January 2001Recorded: 28 December 2020/10:00 PM GUESTS:  Aaron Meyer, Josh Barnett David Wilkinson Set the Scene (Knight talking on Dunn Meadow then Play Audio from Haston talk about Knight) The whole scene was eerily similar to the last time the Spartans played in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers made a quick putback with half a second left to give IU an 81-79 victory Feb. 26. Until Sunday, it was the last time Michigan State had lost. The Spartans reeled off 23 consecutive victories. "This was a lot like last year, but this is better," Fife said. "It's a little more exciting that last year's tip-in because Michigan State is No. 1." On paper, the Spartans (12-1, 1-1 Big Ten) entered the game as the superior team. They lead IU (10-6, 1-1) in nearly every major statistical category during the season including scoring, defense, rebounding, turnovers and shooting percentage . Michigan State arrived at Assembly Hall on Sunday with the No. 1 ranking, an unbeaten record and the nation's longest winning streak.Kirk Haston's buzzer-beating 3-pointer changed all that ."It's a big win for us, that goes without saying," said Haston, who finished with 27 points. "To be the only team to beat this team, and we beat them two times in a row pretty much, and they're one of the best teams in the country if not the best team in the country, it's a big win for all the past players here and all the players on the team." "I didn't want to go to overtime," he said. "If we missed the shot, we missed it."Thousands of fans -- many of them IU students -- stood in the bleachers screaming. Sophomore guard forward Jason Richardson led the Spartans with 15 points. Richardson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 29 seconds left. Sophomore guard Tom Coverdale grabbed the rebound and called a time out. Two missed shots, two fouls and three free throws later, the Hoosiers called a time out. In the huddle, Davis told his team to run the play "23 Special," which would give either Hornsby or Haston a three-point look.  "When I let it go, I couldn't see it because Randolph was in my face," Haston said after the game. "It felt good when it left my hand. When it went through, the first thing I did was look up at the clock, and I saw all zeroes. Then Coverdale tackled me -- along with the student body." 19nine | Celebrating Hardwood History 19nine knows college basketball.
