Show NotesThis week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their deep dive into the Monk - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Monks are spiritual ascetics and practitioners of a mystical energy known as ki, the magical essence which flows through all living things.According to the Player's Handbook: 'Whatever their discipline, monks are united in their ability to magically harness the energy that flows in their bodies. Whether channeled as a striking display of combat prowess or a subtler focus of defensive ability and speed, this energy infuses all that a monk does.Monks make careful study of a magical energy that most monastic traditions call ki. This energy is an element of the magic that suffuses the multiverse—specifically, the element that flows through living bodies. Monks harness this power within themselves to create magical effects and exceed their bodies' physical capabilities, and some of their special attacks can hinder the flow of ki in their opponents. Using this energy, monks channel uncanny speed and strength into their unarmed strikes. As they gain experience, their martial training and their mastery of ki gives them more power over their bodies and the bodies of their foes.'In this episode, we cover the following 8 subclasses:Way of the Long Death (from SCAG)Way of the Drunken Master (from XGtE)Way of the Kensei (from XGtE)Way of the Sun Soul (from XGtE)Way of Mercy (from TCoE)Way of the Astral Self (from TCoE)Way of the Ascendant Dragon (from FToD)Way of the Cobalt Soul (from TCSR)Note - during the episode, we incorrectly label 'the Way of the Cobalt Soul tradition as being found from the Explorer's Guide to Wildmount'. Show notesThis week Fiona and ever-returning guest cohost Rob read through 'Trophy Gold', a roleplaying game about a group of treasure-hunters entering the haunted and forgotten places of the world. The game tells the story of the treasure-hunters' obsessive drive to seek ever greater riches in a desperate bid to stay alive. 'Trophy Gold' takes the collaborative, push-your-luck rules and rolls of its sister game, Trophy Dark, and blends them with the survive-by-your-wits mentality of old school fantasy games. Instead of the ever-increasing power that comes with leveling up found in other games, treasure-hunters in Trophy Gold remain fragile, meaning death is always just one bad roll away.RPG discussed: Trophy Gold published by The Gauntlet, July 2022.Consider using our affiliate link when using DM's Guild!#SupportyourFLGSCredits The DM's Book Club is hosted, recorded, edited, and produced by Fiona Howat (@WAIR_Podcast) and Hamilton (@TheDragonDM). Show NotesThis week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their deep dive into the Bard - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Bards are a versatile group, capable of combat and of magic. They weave magic through words and music to inspire allies, demoralize foes, manipulate minds, create illusions, and even heal wounds.According to the Player's Handbook: 'The bard is a master of song, speech, and the magic they contain. Bards say that the multiverse was spoken into existence, that the words of the gods gave it shape, and that echoes of these primordial Words of Creation still resound throughout the cosmos. The music of bards is an attempt to snatch and harness those echoes, subtly woven into their spells and powers. The greatest strength of bards is their sheer versatility. Many bards prefer to stick to the sidelines in combat, using their magic to inspire their allies and hinder their foes from a distance. But bards are capable of defending themselves in melee if necessary, using their magic to bolster their swords and armor. Their spells lean toward charms and illusions rather than blatantly destructive spells. They have a wide-ranging knowledge of many subjects and a natural aptitude that lets them do almost anything well. Bards become masters of the talents they set their minds to perfecting, from musical performance to esoteric knowledge.'In this episode, we cover the following subclass for the Bard:College of Lore (from PHB)College of Valor (from PHB)College of Glamour (from XGtE)College of Swords (from XGtE) College of Whispers (from XGtE)College of Creation (from TCoE)College of Eloquence (from TCoE)College of Spirits (from VRGtR)College of Tragedy (from Tal'Dorei Reborn)Books: 'Player's Handbook', 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything', 'Tasha's Cauldron of Everything' and 'Van Ritchen's Guide to Ravenloft' published by Wizards of the Coast, August 2014, November 2017, November 2022, and May 2021 respectively.'Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn' by James Haeck, Matthew Mercer and Hannah Rose, published December 2021.Consider using our affiliate link when using DM's Guild!#SupportyourFLGSCredits The DM's Book Club is hosted, recorded, edited, and produced by Fiona Howat (@WAIR_Podcast) and Hamilton (@TheDragonDM). The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Planes! In each episode, we'll explore the Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons! We continue our bonus journey as we explore Sigil; The City of Doors; the centre of the multiverse; or just the confluence of energies that bore a home. Its origins unknown, this city upon the spire is the beating heart of the outer planes; portals lead to everywhere a berk may want (or not want) to go. The “ruler” aka The Lady of Pain silently controls the city with her god-like powers; yet the Factions is where the day-to-day politic exists; pseudo-intellectual ideologies they hold pit them against one-another as they try to prove their theory for life and the multiverse. In this special episode, we go into the area at the center of all the Planes, The Outlands; Also known as the Plane of Concordant Opposition, is the true neutral centre of the multiversal planes. However, this only means that good, evil, chaos & order are constantly in flux as the plane seeks to exert balance in all. This leads to it being one of the most complicated and conflicted realms of Planescape. With its centre it is also the border to all the other planes through their gate towns, all of which bring an essence of their being to the outlands, a sort of taster course, if you will, for adventurers to explore before the main meal of any plane. With all this, The Outlands is deceptively simple & safe, and in fact a perfect introduction for any adventuring party to the true wonder and dangers of the multiverse.Audio originally from 'The Outlands - The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Planes Episode 17' on the Dragon YouTube channel.Book discussed: Planescape Campaign Setting, published by Wizards of the Coast (1994).Consider using our affiliate link when using DM's Guild!#SupportyourFLGSCredits The DM's Book Club is hosted, recorded, edited, and produced by Fiona Howat (@WAIR_Podcast) and Hamilton (@TheDragonDM).
