Marth (@marthawells1) has won Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards for her work. We mostly talked about the Murderbot Diaries and the Books of the Raksura. Oh, and the Star Wars tie-in about Leia, Razor's Edge. And The Witch King is coming out next year, a brand new world. Heck, just look at her full catalog. Martha also has a blog and a website. As often happens when book dragons get together, we talked about our hoards. Some books and authors that came up: Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal Ian Halle Ancillary Justice trilogy by Ann Leckie Phyllis Gotlieb (Wikipedia) Andre Norton (Wikipedia) Zenna Henderson (Wikipedia) The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold (we didn't like the new covers as much as the old but the books are great either way) Tor.com is a fantastic site with lots of free fiction. Murderbot started there and has a few short stories that are otherwise hard to find. There is a rare and sold out Subterranean Press edition of the Murderbot Diaries with illustrations from Tommy Arnold. See some of the illustrations. Transcript

Seth's nephew Jacob joins him for a quick conversation about Mirror Dance, winner of the 1995 Hugo Award for Best Novel. No real non-spoiler discussion on this one since it's pretty hard to discuss without spoilers both for this book and for the rest of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Despite the grim nature of a story about a pandemic that destroys civilization, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is full of subtle optimism and deep characters. It jumps between timelines and between characters, and builds mystery about how all these people are going to be connected. It tells a tense story about the dangers posed by other survivors in a post-apocalyptic world, while at the same time its characters try to hold on to art and music. It even manages to explore the narcissism created by celebrity in the 'present' timeline. The book was first published as sci-fi, but after the release of the TV show has been moved to the general fiction section in most book stores, so this also seemed like the right episode go deep on what exactly counts as sci-fi. As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar books if you are looking for more great books to read. This week we recommend Barrayar (or any book in the Vorkosigan Saga) by Lois McMaster Bujold, The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel, any book by Mario Vargas Llosa, and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. If you'd prefer to watch the video version, you can watch it at this link.

This week we were so excited to interview Joe Haldeman and his wife Gay! The Forever War is absolutely one of the best sci fi books of all time, and we were excited to discuss the origins, real-life inspiration, and message of the book, as well as sci-fi and writing more broadly. In addition to writing more than 30 novels, Joe was also a professor at MIT (as was Gay) where he taught science fiction writing for decades. This week, instead of us recommending similar books, we asked Joe and Gay to recommend their favorite sci-fi books. Among Joe's books, they recommended Camouflage, the World's Trilogy, and The Accidental Time Machine. For books by other writers, they recommended anything by Vonnegut, The Murderbot series by Martha Wells, Ted Chiang, N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga (as well as some love for John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway if you want to read some non science fiction).YouTube link if you prefer to watch the episode.NO SPOILERS SUMMARY OF THE FOREVER WAR: William Mandella was a physics student when he was conscripted into the UNEF. Human colony ships had been disappearing, apparently at the hands of a newly discovered alien species called the Taurans, and humanity is conscripting the best and brightest to go out and fight the aliens in deep space.Mandella and the rest of the recruits undergo dangerous and brutal training to learn how fight for control of the collapsars that greatly speed interstellar travel. During training and through the difficult fighting that follows, Mandella falls in love with another member of his unit, a woman named Marygay Potter.Mandella and Marygay do everything they can to survive the war, but even if they survive, they still can't return to the world they left behind. Even with the collapsars to speed their interstellar journeys, travelling through the gaps between the stars still requires accelerating to near lightspeed, and the resulting time dilation means every trip takes them farther and farther into the future, away from their families and the society they knew.

Del has a fish story and he's even correct as it turns out. What's in that can of tuna fish anyway? The Bucks go quasi-intellectual as Del reviews The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. This is sci-fi fantasy series about Miles Vorkosigan, a very smart guy who sometimes does dumb things. A future buck, it seems.Dave reviews Transatlantic by Colum McCann, which weaves together three historical events with real and fictional characters. It covers the 1919 transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown, Frederick Douglass' 1845 lecture tour of Ireland, and Sen. George Mitchell's pivotal role in the 1998 peace accord for the "Troubles" in N. Ireland and beyond.Dave listens to a video about determining the age of a buck and mistakenly thinks they're talking about him. It's an honest mistake and may also be valid. You decide. Finally, the bucks discuss the Best Picture nominees they've seen so far. Dave's fave is The Power of the Dog.Tell us what you think. We're still BUCKSTWOOLD@GMAIL.COM
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Leave a Line of Retreat , published by Eliezer Yudkowsky on the AI Alignment Forum. When you surround the enemy Always allow them an escape route. They must see that there is An alternative to death. Sun Tzu, The Art of War Don't raise the pressure, lower the wall. Lois McMaster Bujold, Komarr I recently happened into a conversation with a nonrationalist who had somehow wandered into a local rationalists' gathering. She had just declared (a) her belief in souls and (b) that she didn't believe in cryonics because she believed the soul wouldn't stay with the frozen body. I asked, “But how do you know that?” From the confusion that flashed on her face, it was pretty clear that this question had never occurred to her. I don't say this in a bad way—she seemed like a nice person without any applied rationality training, just like most of the rest of the human species. Most of the ensuing conversation was on items already covered on Overcoming Bias—if you're really curious about something, you probably can figure out a good way to test it, try to attain accurate beliefs first and then let your emotions flow from that, that sort of thing. But the conversation reminded me of one notion I haven't covered here yet: “Make sure,” I suggested to her, “that you visualize what the world would be like if there are no souls, and what you would do about that. Don't think about all the reasons that it can't be that way; just accept it as a premise and then visualize the consequences. So that you'll think, ‘Well, if there are no souls, I can just sign up for cryonics,' or ‘If there is no God, I can just go on being moral anyway,' rather than it being too horrifying to face. As a matter of self-respect, you should try to believe the truth no matter how uncomfortable it is, like I said before; but as a matter of human nature, it helps to make a belief less uncomfortable, before you try to evaluate the evidence for it.” The principle behind the technique is simple: as Sun Tzu advises you to do with your enemies, you must do with yourself—leave yourself a line of retreat, so that you will have less trouble retreating. The prospect of losing your job, for example, may seem a lot more scary when you can't even bear to think about it than after you have calculated exactly how long your savings will last, and checked the job market in your area, and otherwise planned out exactly what to do next. Only then will you be ready to fairly assess the probability of keeping your job in the planned layoffs next month. Be a true coward, and plan out your retreat in detail—visualize every step—preferably before you first come to the battlefield. The hope is that it takes less courage to visualize an uncomfortable state of affairs as a thought experiment, than to consider how likely it is to be true. But then after you do the former, it becomes easier to do the latter. Remember that Bayesianism is precise—even if a scary proposition really should seem unlikely, it's still important to count up all the evidence, for and against, exactly fairly, to arrive at the rational quantitative probability. Visualizing a scary belief does not mean admitting that you think, deep down, it's probably true. You can visualize a scary belief on general principles of good mental housekeeping. “The thought you cannot think controls you more than thoughts you speak aloud”—this happens even if the unthinkable thought is false! The leave-a-line-of-retreat technique does require a certain minimum of self-honesty to use correctly. For a start: You must at least be able to admit to yourself which ideas scare you, and which ideas you are attached to. But this is a substantially less difficult test than fairly counting the evidence for an idea that scares you. Does it help if I say that I have occasion to use this technique myself? A r...
This series is beloved by its fans, but doesn't get enough recognition in the wider world. These are incredible, character-driven stories that are a breeze to read but beneath the surface have so much to say about what's most important in life and the meaning and definition of personal identity. That makes them the perfect intro to sci fi for anyone new to the genre, and a refreshing read for any longtime sci fi fan. 4.25 / 5 stars. The Vorkosigan Saga is a series of 16 books by Lois McMaster Bujold, three of which won the Hugo award in 1991, 1992, and 1995. The Vor Game, Barrayar, Mirror Dance, and the rest of the saga follow the members of the Vorkosigan family, one of the feudal ruling families on the planet Barrayar. The books are digestible and concise by sci fi standards (350-600 pages, 11-18 hours of audiobook). The series is also loosely episodic, so you don't have to read them in order. These are character-driven stories, and you're sure to remember these characters for years. The most important of them, Miles Vorkosigan, is clearly the inspiration for George R.R. Martin's Tyrion Lannister, and is even more likable than the knock-off Lannister version. He's a dwarf who suffers from several physical disabilities, but he's wildly brilliant, funny, and imperious, and is constantly throwing himself into danger to protect his friends and family (or just get himself out of a jam of his own making). Across the generations, the Vorkosigan family are the main advisers to generations of Barrayaran emperors, and have to use their wits and intellect to get the empire out of trouble and slowly push Barrayaran society out of its backward nature. These are books about people, the stories that make them who they are, and how they create and define their identities in an unfriendly universe.
It's all about science fiction today on The Bookshelf Odyssey Podcast! Sci-Fi takes up a significant portion of my bookshelves, how about yours? Amelinda Bérubé, author or spooky YA novels The Dark beneath the Ice and Here There are Monsters, shares her favourite plot twists, books and characters, her interest in unreliable narrators, and her love of the Canadian landscapes that inspire her stories. 20 minutes. All ages. A full transcript is available at CabinTales.ca. Show Notes [0:00] Intro [1:10] Interview with Amelinda Bérubé CA: Do you have advice to young writers on how to begin? AB: I think my best advice would be just get going…. And when you are looking for that place to come in…you want to get as close as you can to… the point where everything changes… [2:45] CA: Do you have a favorite plot twist, either from your own work or from another work of fiction? AB: My favorite thing that I've come across lately is a book called Rules for Vanishing. … [3:25] CA: And do you have any favorite techniques or something you could recommend to young writers for building tension? AB: One thing that I would recommend is look at a scary movie… what steps does it take to move from everyday life into this really heightened state of suspense? [4:45] CA: Do you have a favorite first line? AB: … the opening paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House is just …] perfection. … [5:00] CA: How do you feel about endings where the good guy loses, or sad endings? AB: … Here There are Monsters does not end happily. …. you can end in defeat, you can end in bittersweet or sad feelings, but you have to end with your character having a way out of the woods. … You can't just grind somebody into the dirt and leave them there. [6:20] CA: Do you find yourself editing yourself while drafting or do you do a full draft and then go back and revise? AB: Mostly it's just a free for all when I first write. … I feel like I'm a much better rewriter than I am a writer. ... And I found owning that kind of liberating. … you don't have to like it; you just have to do it. [8:20] CA: Do you have a favorite point of view to write from? AB: … For YA… I find I fall pretty naturally into a first-person present… especially for something spooky, what it really highlights is how subjective the experience is. … [9:00] CA: Have you ever written an unreliable narrator? … AB: I feel like in a way, all first-person narrators are unreliable.… I don't think anybody clearly knows their own motivations … that's one of the things that I think fiction is all about, is sort of like exploring all the murky false consciousness that is involved in being a person. [10:40] CA: Have you ever written about siblings? AB: … Here There are Monsters is … about sisters who kind of have a toxic relationship… And I have another book that I'm working on that also goes into that territory. … [11:20] CA: And monsters, you've written about monsters. AB: Oh yes. … I find that monsters are a good way to talk about… the things that are really scary about people. They're sort of funhouse mirrors … they reflect back to us the things that we can't really talk about in ourselves. [12:00] CA: Did you tell stories around a campfire as a kid or have another off the cuff storytelling experience? AB: … I've never been an off-the-cuff sort of person. … [12:45] CA: Do you ever write short stories? AB: I've written exactly 1 short story since high school. … [13:25] CA: And do you have a favorite scary story? … AB: … I really do love The Haunting of Hill House. … It's kind of surprising how scary it is, given the scary elements. …But I'd also talk about… Rules for Vanishing. …. And there's a Frances Hardinge book called Cuckoo Song which is really more of a dark fantasy than it is horror, but it's so scary. … [15:00] CA: And do you like scary movies too? AB: I find as I get older, I'm too chicken for them. … [16:25] CA: Do you have a favorite setting from fiction, either your own or another book you like? AB: I'm always most interested in the Canadian landscape. There's Eden Robinson. …Any place where you're in the spooky woods, I'm all about. But I love to recognize those woods. I love to know that this is, I guess, a place close to home. …if I look at like what I want my career to be as an author, and specifically as a Canadian author, like I just want to jet set around the country and find all the spooky places and write about them. [17:30] CA: And characters, do you have a favorite fictional character from your own book or from another book that you love? AB: I think probably I mentioned Lois McMaster Bujold before. She has a series about this fellow named Miles Vorkosigan. .... He's so amazing. … [18:40] CA: Finally, are there setting or character exercises that you might recommend to young writers to help develop those things? AB: … think of settings that you're familiar with, that you know well enough to describe in very concrete terms using all your five senses… first of all just describe the place in as fine detail as you can and try to sort of capture the feeling of the place. And then … make it spooky. … there's different things that you highlight for each mood…. [20:45] Amelinda Bérubé introduces herself AB: I'm Amelinda Bérubé. I have two books out at the moment. The first is The Dark Beneath the Ice and the second is Here there are Monsters. I write about ghosts and monsters and other things that go bump in the night. And I live in Ottawa. And I guess I like to read pretty much anything and everything, but I'm most attached to books that scare me, or books that make me cry or books that make me laugh. I guess basically I'm looking for anything that makes me feel something.
