To understand how the Jets got to where they are today, we must understand history. Today MacGregor Wells joins John to discuss the John Idzik Era. When Idzik was hired in 2013, expectations were high that he could turn around a franchise that had lost its way. The GM lasted only two years after a baffling tenure. We talk about the missteps the team and the executive made. Find and follow Locked On Jets on your favorite podcast platforms: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast... Jake Brown and Brian Costello open up the show diving into Joe Douglas' comments to the media on Tuesday. They discuss what he said about the future of Adam Gase, Sam Darnold, not re-signing Robby Anderson and not trading Chris Herndon. The guys then preview Jets-Patriots Monday night and make their predictions. In a new "Brian's Book" segment, Coz looks back to the bizarre John Idzik press conference and the "Fire Idzik" plane flying over practice. In "Stump The Coz," Alex Cammarata fails to stump Coz as he names every Jets quarterback that has started in a game since 1999. Former All-Pro Jets linebacker Marvin Jones then joins the show. Jones discusses the Jets struggles, the 1996 team, the future of Darnold and the six different head coaches he had in his career. Jones also gets into the culture Bill Parcells established, the rules in the game today, what Mike Westhoff said and everyone in the franchise not being on the same page. For close to a decade, it seems like the Jets have had one philosophy at the running back position. They have targeted old, big name running backs. This is not simply a Mike Maccagnan thing. It also happened during the days of Mike Tannenbaum and John Idzik. In 2010, Tannenbaum signed the legendary LaDainian Tomlinson from the Chargers to be what he hoped would be one of the final pieces of a Jets Super Bowl puzzle. Four years later, Idzik brought in former 2,000 yard rusher Chris Johnson to help push the Jets into the Playoffs. Two years later, Maccagnan signed former Bears star Matt Forte for the same reason. None of these moves worked terribly well. (Tomlinson was nowhere near as productive as you might remember.) Beyond that, these signings had implications that hurt the team. Younger, better running backs were either discarded or had their playing time limited. On today's podcast we talk about the need for the Jets to change their approach at the position. Instead of seeking out the biggest name, it is time to look for younger and cheaper options with more upside. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
