Matthew Coller is joined by Will Ragatz of Sports Illustrated and Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press to talk about the Vikings' training camp, whether they need help on the defensive line, if Chris Reed's injury has forced the Vikings into starting Garrett Bradbury, whether it matters that Nick Bosa smoked Christian Darrisaw a few times in camp and if Sheldon Richardson or Ndamukong Suh are still an option. Two 5-5 teams meet and the winner will improve their likelihood of making the playoffs. Can the Vikings be that team? Your Minnesota Vikings traveled to to play the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams are coming off of 2 straight wins and see hope. Kyle Shanahan with Jimmy Garoppolo as his game manager will take their run heavy game against Mike Zimmer's defense that has a depleted defensive line. Then there is WR Deebo Samuel that can burn you from just about any alignment. The corners will have their hands full for sure. Can the Vikings grab the victory? They have the talent, so let's hope so. Dave and Darren who both started blogging on the Purple decades ago will go over a way to possibly see how this game will go and if the Vikings can win, so get ready for the Climbing The Pocket and Daily Norseman pregame show! Here are the themes for the show: We'll go over the usual stats to start - strengths and weaknesses of each team. Loss of Dalvin Tomlinson Tomlinson on COVID IR. He's been a key part of the defensive line - playing about 58% of the defensive snaps - third-most on the D-line. More of a run stopper than pass rusher. Kyle Shanahan knows how to run an offense and his running game is always good - no matter who gets the ball. Could be a big loss for the run defense, and we'll see Sheldon Richardson and James Lynch playing a lot inside. they will have to play well. Deebo Samuel effect Forget George Kittle, Deebo Samuel has to be the focus of the Vikings defensive gameplan. He makes this offense go. Dual threat - they use him as a running back and a WR and he's been damn good at both this season. A YAC machine with string hands and very tough to tackle. Vikings don't have an obvious answer for him on defense - too fast for the LBs and safeties and none of the Vikings corners are known for their tackling. Packers had success on Sunday targeting Xavier Woods and forcing him to cover WRs. It didn't go well. I'm sure Samuel and Shanahan noticed. Vikings Deep passing game - a new philosophy or mirage Vikings offense continued to be aggressive against GB. Kirk Cousins made 14 deep throws - four more than any other QB last week. It's been successful, and feeding Justin Jefferson (with help from Adam Thielen) has paid dividends. Vikings offense looks as sharp as it has all season. Will they keep it up? Could down to how the O-line handles the 49ers d-line. And how Christian Darrisaw handles Nick Bosa - who has 10 sacks and is a phenomenal player - great get-off, strong, an array of pass rushing moves and never gives up. In 2019 the Vikings offensive line got manhandled by the 49ers d-line. Both units have some different personnel now. But the Vikings Oline has to win or at least battle the 49ers front to a stalemate for the Vikings to win this one. It's Packers week and fans of the Purple relish opportunity for the Minnesota Vikings to defeat the Green Bay Packers. Will it happen this week? Can Mike Zimmer win the chess match against Matt LeFleur and Aaron Rodgers? Can Klint Kubiak with help out call Joe Barry and his defense? This game promises to be one of the best this season and we all know what it means to us, and that obnoxious fellow employee at work. Can the Vikings grab the victory and silence them all week? They have the talent, so let's hope so. Dave and Darren who both started blogging on the Purple decades ago will go over a way to possibly see how this game will go and if the Vikings can win, so get ready for the Climbing The Pocket and Daily Norseman pregame show! Other themes: The Joe Barry effect & TTFW's defense Need a photo of Barry and maybe a couple of other TTFW defenders - linebacker De'Vondre Campbell and Dean Lowry TTFW defense is a big reason Green Bay is 8-2. Haven't given up more than 22 points in the last seven games - despite no Zadarius Smith, no Jaire Alexander, Whitney Mercilus is done for the season. Kenny Clark might not play Sunday and they keep rolling along. Who are these guys? Coming off a shutout. Barry is doing a great job with this defense. Generating a lot of turnovers - stuffing the run the last three games. A stiff test for a Vikings offense that has struggled offensively at home this year. A.J. Dillon - X Factor Dillon will be the #1 RB for TTFW this game. Aaron Jones is out. Good for the Vikings because he usually kills us. But Dillon is a load - six feet and 250. Breaks a lot of tackles and the Vikings defense doesn't tackle well. TTFW offense hasn't been super explosive this year but if Vikes can't contain Dillon, it's going to make things easy for Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, and the rest of that offense. Vikings defenders need to rally to the ball and get three, four, and maybe more guys on Dillon to take him down. Dalvin Tomlinson, Armon Watts, James Lynch, Sheldon Richardson will need to bring their A-game in the interior. Kirk Cousins - Will he be Checkdown King or Mr. Aggressive? The Vikings and Cousins have been very careful with the ball when throwing it this season. Only two interceptions but not very aggressive in the throws made. Lots of short stuff. Low risk, low reward. Cousins was a bit more aggressive against Los Angeles Chargers and converted on some of the third and longs by making some riskier throws instead of settling for shorter, safer throws that wouldn't get first downs. But will he take chances again against a TTFW offense that has created 17 turnovers this season? Targeting Jefferson early and often worked against LA. It will need to work again Sunday. The Vikings offense has played poorly at home other than the Seattle Seahawks game. Cousins needs to have a big game and show some big balls for the Vikes to win this one. Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes a look at the Vikings' decision to bring back defensive end Everson Griffen from a number of angles -- a couple of them unsurprising and one of them fairly surprising. He's the fourth former member of the defense to return in 2021, joining Mackensie Alexander, Sheldon Richardson and Stephen Weatherly. He's part of an overall defensive upgrade in the offseason that has seen the Vikings dole out more than 200 times as much guaranteed money to that side of the ball than to outside free agents on offense. And Griffen has the potential to be a disruption in the locker room after social media comments critical of Kirk Cousins. 8:00: Columnist Chip Scoggins joins the show to talk about his recent story on the big business of charitable gaming and how it funds a lot of youth sports initiatives in Minnesota. Youth sports organizations in the state generated more than $100 million in net receipts -- no, that's not a misprint -- in 2020, and the number could go up this year. Scoggins discusses how we got to this point, where the money is doing and what the potential problems are with all of this. 28:00: Is there finally good news for people trying to watch the Twins, Wild, Wolves and other teams on Bally Sports North? That's the message from a recent report. Also, a brief Kirill Kaprizov update and an appreciation of the St. Paul Saints.
