Two women, two different worlds — but both hiding lethal secrets. Jane Toppan, the nurse known as “Jolly Jane,” poisoned more than 30 patients in the late 1800s, later admitting she killed simply for pleasure. And Polly Bartlett, dubbed Wyoming's first female serial killer, ran a boarding house with her father where unsuspecting travelers met their end for money and greed. In this episode of Blood Ties, we uncover the chilling parallels between a trusted caregiver and a ruthless innkeeper, and how their crimes challenged the expectations of women in their time while leaving behind a legacy of fear.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram: bloodties_podEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Sir Chucklenugget and the Time Capsule Treasure!
Jolly Jane Toppin, a nurse in late 19th century Lowell, Massachusetts, became one of New England's most prolific serial killers, confessing to 31 murders and claiming responsibility for 100 deaths. Her story reveals how she used her position as a trusted caregiver to poison patients and family members while deriving sexual pleasure from watching them die.The haunting legacy of "Jolly Jane" Toppin still echoes through Massachusetts more than a century after her crimes. Born Honora Kelley to struggling Irish immigrants in 1857, Jane's transformation from abandoned child to one of America's most prolific female serial killers reveals a disturbing journey through the dark corners of New England history. Stripped of her identity at a young age, Jane became an indentured servant to the Toppan family who erased her Irish heritage, renamed her, and created a fictional past for her. This early experience of identity manipulation foreshadowed the deceptions that would later define her murderous career. As she trained to become a nurse, Jane developed not only medical skills but a disturbing fascination with death and suffering that would claim dozens of lives. What makes Jane's story particularly chilling is her methodical approach to murder. Working as a private nurse for wealthy New England families, she poisoned her victims with morphine and atropine, sometimes prolonging their suffering for her own pleasure. She confessed to killing 31 people but claimed the true number might be closer to 100. From her foster sister Elizabeth to the entire Davis family, Jane eliminated anyone who stood in her way or owed her money. The case of Jolly Jane represents a perfect storm of historical circumstances: the vulnerability of patients in early medical care, the limited forensic capabilities of the time, and the trust placed in caregivers. Her victims' deaths were typically attributed to natural causes until suspicions finally arose after the Davis family murders in 1901. Following her arrest and trial, Jane spent the remaining 37 years of her life in Taunton State Hospital, ironically developing a fear that her own food was being poisoned. This episode explores not just the crimes of a serial killer, but the societal conditions that allowed her to operate undetected for so long. Uncover the disturbing psychology behind one of New England's most notorious murderers and examine how her legacy continues to influence our understanding of female serial killers today.Join us Friday, June 20th at Memorial Field in Taunton, Massachusetts for a gathering to remember Debra Melo on the 25th anniversary of her disappearance.Follow @crimeofthetruestkindOnline: CrimeoftheTruestKind.comPatreon: patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkindSupport the show: patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkind Hosted on Acast. The Unexpected Crimes of Nurse ToppanEpisodes 29 and 30Ad-Free Safe House EditionHistory contains many cases of nurses who turned out to be killers, but there may not be one as bizarre as the case of Jane Toppan, one of the first "angels of death" on record.Because she had such a cheerful disposition, people called her “Jolly Jane,” and so were completely surprised when she was arrested for the murder of a family in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Once suspicions were aroused, accusations began to fall like rain. The exact count of her death toll remains a mystery, but estimates put it between 31 and 84 murders, although the longer she remained in the asylum, the larger the number grew.More Serial KillersBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.

The episode where Sarah brings us some true crime about Jolly Jane, who is really not that jolly. Jane Toppan was a nurse who liked to kill…she missed the day of orientation when “Do No Harm” is covered. Jane killed numerous patients in Massachusetts from 1895-1901 and is thought to be one of the most unusual female serial killers due to her motives behind the killings. Look, we have lots of questions here: where were her preceptors? How did she get away with it for so long? And where was Florence?! She would never. www.thetipsyghost.com Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @thetipsyghost Email us your stories at thetipsyghost@gmail.com Show your support when you subscribe, leave a great review, & give us a 5 start rating— it really helps!

Considered among the first (and certainly the most prolific) American female serial killers and so-called angels of mercy, Jane Toppan's killing spree went unnoticed for more than fifteen years, as she transitioned from one hospital to another, leaving an unprecedented trail of carnage in her wake. Jane was finally arrested in 1901, after killing the entire family of a man for whom she'd been hired to provide care. The arrest and trial were a sensation, as murder and cruelty were a direct contradiction of the norms and standards long relied upon to define American womanhood. When Jane Toppan began training to be a nurse at Cambridge Hospital in 1885, she was bright, eager, and well-liked by her peers and seemed to form easy bonds with the oldest and most vulnerable patients. What no one knew at the time was, once Jane managed to get time alone with her patients, she began conducting medical experiments by injecting them with various drugs and even going so far as to get into bed with them to hold them close to her as they died from the overdoses she'd administered.Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBoston Globe. 1902. Jolly Jane Toppan was a bubbly nurse and caregiver who was know in the late 1800's Boston area for her extreme compassion and dedication to her patients. Jane was a natural fit to take care of the sick and elderly, as she was patient and always in a good mood. Her kind eyes, matronly appearance and jovial smile made Jane easy to trust and a breath of fresh air in the cold clinical light of a hospital, it was so nice to have a person as caring as Jane in their corner in what would often be the last moments of there life. Therein lied the problem for Jane, it seemed that more and more of her patients were winding up dead. By the time Jane was apprehended she confessed to over 30 murders though most suspect it could be more. If you're afraid of the doctor's office or hospitals....this episode will validate that fear! Jolly Jane Toppan was known by doctors as the fun, loving nurse, but she had a darker side. Jolly Jane loved to poison elderly patients and acquaintances and watching them die. Yes, she actually would climb into bed or hold her victim and watch their life end. Between 1895 and 1901 in Massachusetts, she murdered 31 patients and probably many, many more. On this episode of The Good,The Bad and The Pure Evil I look at Jane Toppan also known as Jolly Jane and she was a very unusual serial killer. Like most she had an unstable and unhappy upbringing but unlike female serial killers Jane killed for a sexual thrill. She was a nurse and would appear to commit mercy killings of the old and sick but there seems to be always a reason behind them from jealousy to the erotic sensation.

When the hospitals won't take you anymore, why not just start your own practice as a private nurse? Jane Toppan was actually born as Honora Kelley in Boston, 1857. Her parents were Irish immigrants. After her mother, Bridget, died of tuberculosis and her father, Peter, was admitted to an insane asylum and tried to sew his eyelids shut, Honora and her sisters were split up to different families. Honora was adopted by the Toppan family not as a daughter, but a live-in maid. Due to Irish immigrants getting a bad wrap, the Toppans changed her name to Jane. Clearly, Jane had a rough up bringing and a lot of resentment. She channeled this into experimenting on and killing her patients, landlords, and even her own adopted sister. But do to her "sunny disposition" and the compulsive lies of what a great life she had, Jane Toppan was given the name "Jolly Jane". She was a pleasure to be around and told great stories until you, for some reason, didn't feel good and ended up dead.
Jolly Jane, the original Incel. She was a nurse who drugged her patients in order to sexually assault them. Here's to you Bill Cosby. By her own account, she also poisoned and murdered over 100 people.
Join us this week as we take a very brief look at the life of the United State's FIRST serial killer!
Jane Toppan had a love of morphine and no plan to stop administering it as she pleased. Today, we explore the insane story of one of America's most prolific female serial killers; needless to say, Jolly Jane probably did not take the Hippocratic oath. Yes, we're back with our second look into Mrs. Lavinia Fisher, who you may remember from such atrocities as The Six Mile Wayfarer House, and the crimes she committed there. What crimes you're asking? Well! How about highway robbery and potential murder. You may also recall she was touted as the first female serial killer in American history - a title that may come into question in this episode. Nevertheless, Lavinia was hanged after her husband, while she wore her wedding dress. And you know what happens when evil people die under dramatic circumstances? They haunt the joint! Naturally, the site in which she died plays home to her spirit... and maybe not just hers. Turns out that the Old County Jail has quite a terrible history about it. For over a hundred years it wore many faces, from a hospital and a workhouse, to prisons where people were brutally tortured and killed for their crimes. It was also where many men from the Vesey Revolt were imprisoned and hanged. The grounds itself seem to be cursed, haunted, and just downright evil. So why not open a haunted tour?! Of course somebody did, and because of that, many have witnessed what they believe to be ghosts or spirits wandering the building, including the ghost of Lavinia Fisher. I mean, what do you expect in a place with such a history? Lastly, we talk about maybe the first convicted female serial killer in American history? Yeah, let's go with that. While I believe that Lavinia did commit many a murder, she was never convicted. But you know who was? Jolly Jane Toppan, who was actually born Honora Kelley. Her life was less than ideal in her younger years which probably lead to her infamous future. Mom died young, dad was an abusive alcoholic, and she ended up in an orphanage, if that's not a recipe for a serial killer, I don't know what it. Regardless, she went onto kill a lot of people. But just how many? Well, you'll have to listen to find out.
