On August 4, 1892, the quiet town of Fall River, Massachusetts, was rocked by a gruesome double murder. Andrew Borden and his wife, Abby, were found brutally hacked to death in their own home. But the most shocking twist? The prime suspect was none other than Andrew's own daughter, 32-year-old Lizzie Borden. The crime and trial became one of the most infamous cases in American history, sparking a media frenzy that still captivates true crime fans today. But was Lizzie truly guilty, or was she wrongfully accused? In this episode, we set the stage for our deep dive into the Lizzie Borden case. We'll explore the crime scene, the initial investigation, and the immediate fallout that left a community in shock. Over the next few episodes, we'll uncover who Lizzie Borden really was, what happened inside that house on that fateful day, and whether she got away with murder. Tune in and join us as we unravel one of history's most chilling true crime mysteries.
Women are responsible for only 10 per cent of homicides in Australia, Canada, England, and the US, and because it’s such a small sample size not much research has been done into the motives and behaviours that drive female killers. Dr. Kathryn M. Whiteley, a feminist criminologist, has been researching women who kill for over 20 years. She’s spoken to hundreds of women behind bars, many of whom are serving life sentences with no chance of parole. Dr. Whiteley’s focus is on telling their stories and understanding their experiences and perspectives in their own words. You can listen to Dr Kathryn’s conversations on her podcast Self Identities: Conversations With Convicted Women here. THE END BITS Subscribe to Mamamia CREDITS Guest: Kathryn M. Just in time for Halloween, an episode dedicated to discussing the lives and legacy of Britain's female murderers.Women throughout history have been seen as the weaker sex both physically and emotionally. While women have been blamed for the fall of men since Eve in the Garden of Eden, their crimes usually centered around sexuality. When women murder, this breaks all the expectations of what women are capable of. Rage, violence, cunning, and vengeance are traits often prescribed to men. In the new world of women's history, these women complicate the narrative by providing anything but a role model for future generations. But they still provide an essential part of human history. Continue listening as I am joined by Erin Fetterly, author of the recently published book Women Who Kill, as we discuss some of Britain's most notorious female murderers. To celebrate the most frightening time of the year, the ladies are wining about corporate body delivery methods, slaying dick, and the odd limits of supernatural powers. First, Kelley tells the terrifying tale of Mary Ann Cotton whose loved ones were plagued with intestinal problems and death that may have been less than natural. Then, Emily tells the story of Mary Webster, an impoverished woman who wouldn't take shit, so naturally, she was accused of being a witch with supernatural cow-repelling powers. In 1994, the movie "Heavenly Creatures" was released. It was based on the true story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme. Pauline and Juliet were teenage girls who seemed to be complete opposites to everyone else on the outside of their oddly close friendship and fantasy world, but to each other, they were soulmates. They were so close, that when they didn't get what they wanted, they were driven to murder.SOURCES:1)The Parker-Hulme Murder Case That Inspired ‘Heavenly Creatures' (allthatsinteresting.com)2)The Parker-Hulme murder: Why it still matters to us - NZ Herald3)The Murder of the Century | HuffPost Entertainment4)adamabrams.com/hc/faq2/library/7.9.5.1.html5)Parker and Hulme murder revelations | The Australian Women's Weekly (nowtolove.co.nz)6)Book – The Mammoth Book of Women Who Kill by Richard Glyn JonesThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4736141/advertisement

In June of 2011, a young man fell 17 stories to his death out of his Oklahoma apartment window. Surprisingly, his pregnant wife admitted to pushing him out, but claims it was an accident. After being put on trial and imprisoned, she was found dead in her cell, and although her death was ruled a suicide, her family strongly disagrees, and believes it was a murder. TW: Severe child abuseThere was a time in this country when there really were not any laws against child abuse. It wasn't until 1975 did the State of Minnesota adopt legislation regarding child abuse and in 1971, the Minnesota State Supreme Court first heard a case concerning “battered-child syndrome”. This week's case is about the horrific treatment and death of three-year-old Dennis Jergens, at the hands of his adoptive mother—someone who had no business ever being allowed to adopt—in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In this episode, Em and Caz take a closer look at women who kill, and ask why murderous women inspire so much fascination and fear. They draw on some contemporary cases of women killers to see if these can shed any light on the biblical character of Judith, whose bloody murder of Holofernes marked her out as both a lethal woman and a biblical hero. Diving into the gendered stereotypes that shape contemporary understandings of homicidal women, Caz and Em explore why they find women like Judith both intriguing and terrifying.Show notesFind us on Twitter @BloodyBiblePod, on Facebook @TheBloodyBiblePodcast, and on Instagram @bloodybiblepodcast. The 2010 discovery of a skull in broadcaster David Attenborough's backyard finally closed a 130-year-old case that enraged Victorian London. When a box of boiled and mutilated human remains washed up on the bank of the Thames in southwest London in 1879, no one could have imagined who was responsible for the heinous act. When police finally arrested the Barnes Mystery murderer, Victorian Britain became disgusted and enraged, but mostly terrified. We're back, twisted listeners, and we have a doozy of a topic for you this week! This week we're talking about women (and girls) who snapped - and with good reason. Although a few may be dubious in the justness of their motives, you'll find it hard not to sympathize with many of these women who just decided they had ENOUGH of some bullshit. Featuring an iconic amputation, a burning bed, a murder by sugar water, and a problematic San Diego socialite. Listen in and rage along with us! Hey there Twisted Listeners! This week we're talking about women who 'snapped' before killing - at least, that's how they are portrayed in the media. In all honesty, these are some of the morally murkiest cases we've ever covered, and many have us rethinking the idea of self defense. We have teens to kill their abusers, moms protecting their children, but also a few less murky cases, like a grocery store clerk gone wild! Here we go again with another holiday inspired episode - Murderous In Laws! As the holidays are upon us, we wanted to show love to those who are suffering through extended family time, be it Thanksgiving with your creepy uncle, or another holiday with an overbearing mother in law. While Diva and Cindy both love their families dearly, they understand that's not always the case, and some people hate their families enough that it drives them to murder! We have some wild cases this week, including a family cult campground murder, completely out of the blue shootings, good old life insurance murders, and more! So tune in, and hopefully you'll feel a bit better about your own family drama by comparison. Hey there Twisted Listeners! This week we're doing something outside of the holiday theme, and covering cases of people who murdered their bosses. And boy are there some doozies in here! From women who murder like they're in a scene from Die Hard, to couples whose Black Friday robberies go horribly wrong, to extremely complicated love/hate triangles, we've run the gamut of stupid criminals killing for terrible reasons. So tune in and check out the horrific stories of disgruntled employees who exacted over the top revenge, and the consequences (or lack thereof) they faced as a result. Who's tired of MEN getting all the attention for murdering people? We are! So, in honor of Women's Herstory Month (and, in celebration of our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY), Hannah and Katy explore three of herstory's women who killed. You'll learn about Frankie Silver, who almost got away with axe-murdering her husband and "hiding" the pieces that were left. Also, about Amelia Dyer, one of the most prolific serial killers in all of herstory (and history) who threw her tiny victims into the Thames and assumed they'd never be found. And finally, about Eva Dugan, the badass prostitute of rural Arizona, who may or may not have murdered her John, and stayed a badass bitch until her very dramatic execution. The girls are drinking champagne and red wine, and munching on chocolate cake in between stories, so grab your own celebratory snack, and settle in for this special anniversary episode!Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thetaleswetellpodcastSources: https://blueridgecountry.com/archive/favorites/frankie-and-charlie-silver/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankie_Stewart_Silverhttps://www.ncdcr.gov/blog/2013/03/05/frankie-silver-first-woman-hanged-in-north-carolinahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva_Duganhttps://www.historicalcrimedetective.com/the-execution-of-eva-dugan/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Dyer
