February 18th: Lavinia Fisher Dies (1820) Some historical mysteries are so marred by rumor and speculation it becomes difficult to discern fact from fiction. On February 18th 1820 a woman was executed for crimes she committed against men in Charleston. A woman who was either a member of a dangerous group of robbers or, more remarkably, the first female serial killer in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavinia_Fisher, https://ghostcitytours.com/charleston/lavinia-fisher/, https://www.legendsofamerica.com/sc-laviniafisher/, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/user/login?destination=/us/blog/machiavellians-gulling-the-rubes/202312/lavinia-fisher-americas-first-known-female-serial, https://www.postandcourier.com/news/lavinia-fisher-of-charleston-nations-first-female-serial-killer-or-wrongly-accused/article_8cd5c8da-e60f-11e9-abd7-0712bc94dd35.html Learn more about your ad choices. In this week's episode I'd like to share the story of the alleged first female serial killer. Her name was Lavian Fisher and she lived with her husband John in an Inn leading up to Charleston, South Carolina. As travelers made their way to the city they would have to make stops along the way, as it would turn out there were alot of disappearances and robberies associated with the Fishers house. In this episode we cover the legend of Lavinia Fisher and how they used their Inn for evil. Enjoy!
This is audio evidence of why I should never try to do anything past a certain time of night. Today's episode features the story of the Old City Jail in Charleston, South Carolina, as told by a very loopy, sleep-deprived Chelsea. We also dabble into the tale of Lavinia Fisher, America's first female serial killer. I'm so sorry about this one. Today's sources include: Wikipedia, discoversouthcarolina.co, ghostcitytours.com, charlestonterrors.com, Atlas Obscura, and nightlyspirits.com.

If you Google the name Lavinia Fisher, you see stories about America's first female serial killer. But does she actually deserve the honor? Tune into an episode from the Patreon vault, all the way back from summer 2021. We talk old south, hangings, conspiracies and ghosts. Lavinia was known for her charm and good looks, which she allegedly used to lure men into her inn and then drug them with a potent mixture of alcohol and opium. Once the victims were unconscious, Lavinia and her husband would rob them of their belongings and then kill them...or did they? They were eventually caught and Lavinia was tried and convicted of murder. She was hanged in 1820 and is believed to be the first woman in the United States to be executed for a capital crime. Some say Lavinia would lure men to the inn and lull them into a false sense of calm, before robbing and killing them, then dumping their bodies in the cellar under Six-Mile House. Others say Lavina would drug the weary travelers with a special tea, before pulling the lever on a trap door and dropping the men into the basement, where they would be robbed and killed by John Fisher. And still others believed Lavina guilty of much darker practices involving the devil. But stories—especially local legends—have a way of shifting and changing over time, exchanging mundane facts for sensational speculations, and in this case, begging the question, who was the real Lavinia Fisher and just what was she guilty of?Thank you Dave White for research assistance.Special thanks to Suruthi and Hannah from RedHanded for joining us today! Happy Spooky Wednesday and a Happy New Year everyone! It's the first episode of the first month of the year, and you know what that means: TRUE CRIME JANUARY! That's right! Brittany's favorite month has come around again, and we're starting it out right. Lavinia Fisher is considered by many to be the first female serial killer in the United States. In the early 1800s, with the help of her husband John, Lavinia killed many men within the walls of the Six Mile Wayfarer House. When they were eventually caught, she didn't pretend to be sorry... she got mad. So mad that her ghost still hangs out around the land and building of The Old Jail, making sure that people know exactly how she feels. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leftofskeptic/support
Charleston, SC. A city rich in fascinating history, beautiful sandy beaches, and bountiful ghost stories. None more so than one of its oldest structures, the Old Charleston jail. It is said that many experience the feeling of being grabbed and scratches appearing after touring the Old Jail, and even reports of seeing the ghostly apparitions of Lavinia Fisher, America's first female serial killer. You're welcome to find out for yourself though. Also, we'll take a look at some of the most haunted roads in the state. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/support
According to legend, Lavinia Fisher was the first female serial killer in the United States, luring as many as 30 men to their death with the help of her husband. But the true story is very different. The legend of Lavinia Fisher bears little resemblance to the truth. Lavinia and her husband John stood accused lot of murder, but robbery, and as you look at history, even that can be called into question.
