Considered among the first (and certainly the most prolific) American female serial killers and so-called angels of mercy, Jane Toppan's killing spree went unnoticed for more than fifteen years, as she transitioned from one hospital to another, leaving an unprecedented trail of carnage in her wake. Jane was finally arrested in 1901, after killing the entire family of a man for whom she'd been hired to provide care. The arrest and trial were a sensation, as murder and cruelty were a direct contradiction of the norms and standards long relied upon to define American womanhood. When Jane Toppan began training to be a nurse at Cambridge Hospital in 1885, she was bright, eager, and well-liked by her peers and seemed to form easy bonds with the oldest and most vulnerable patients. What no one knew at the time was, once Jane managed to get time alone with her patients, she began conducting medical experiments by injecting them with various drugs and even going so far as to get into bed with them to hold them close to her as they died from the overdoses she'd administered.Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBoston Globe. 1902. Jolly Jane Toppan was a bubbly nurse and caregiver who was know in the late 1800's Boston area for her extreme compassion and dedication to her patients. Jane was a natural fit to take care of the sick and elderly, as she was patient and always in a good mood. Her kind eyes, matronly appearance and jovial smile made Jane easy to trust and a breath of fresh air in the cold clinical light of a hospital, it was so nice to have a person as caring as Jane in their corner in what would often be the last moments of there life. Therein lied the problem for Jane, it seemed that more and more of her patients were winding up dead. By the time Jane was apprehended she confessed to over 30 murders though most suspect it could be more. If you're afraid of the doctor's office or hospitals....this episode will validate that fear! Jolly Jane Toppan was known by doctors as the fun, loving nurse, but she had a darker side. Jolly Jane loved to poison elderly patients and acquaintances and watching them die. Yes, she actually would climb into bed or hold her victim and watch their life end. Between 1895 and 1901 in Massachusetts, she murdered 31 patients and probably many, many more. When it comes to serial killers in the early 1900s a few names always seem to come to mind. People such as H.H. Holmes and “Jolly Jane” Toppan are a few of these iconic figures we think of when we picture “early American mass murderers”. One killer that seems to fly under the radar at this time in America was a killer that clouded New Orleans in terror from May 1918-October 1919. This killer claimed to be a demon from hell that reigned fear all across the city of New Orleans. He killed many and left more horribly disfigured inside their own homes. He was a hulking figure that wore a trench coat, slouched hat, and his weapon of choice…an axe.
When the hospitals won't take you anymore, why not just start your own practice as a private nurse? Jane Toppan was actually born as Honora Kelley in Boston, 1857. Her parents were Irish immigrants. After her mother, Bridget, died of tuberculosis and her father, Peter, was admitted to an insane asylum and tried to sew his eyelids shut, Honora and her sisters were split up to different families. Honora was adopted by the Toppan family not as a daughter, but a live-in maid. Due to Irish immigrants getting a bad wrap, the Toppans changed her name to Jane. Clearly, Jane had a rough up bringing and a lot of resentment. She channeled this into experimenting on and killing her patients, landlords, and even her own adopted sister. But do to her "sunny disposition" and the compulsive lies of what a great life she had, Jane Toppan was given the name "Jolly Jane". She was a pleasure to be around and told great stories until you, for some reason, didn't feel good and ended up dead.

On June 23rd, 1902, Jane Toppan was finally convicted of killing at least 11 people while working as a nurse in Eastern Massachusetts. She was declared guilty by reason of insanity for her crimes, getting pleasure toying with her victims by poisoning them before finally allowing them to die. She spent years discretely killing people and there's a chance she actually murdered nearly 100 people though it was never confirmed. Did the trauma of her earlier years turn her into a killer? Jane Toppan, born Honora Kelley, was one of America's first female serial killers. Really you could say she was one of the first serial killers, period. An angel of death who openly admitted she killed for the sexual thrill, Toppan has baffled analysts with a personality that checks too many boxes. @BloodyPodcast on all social media. www.patreon.com/bloodypodcast PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!
As a young, Irish immigrant in the late 1800's "Jolly" Jane Toppan faced many hardships. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, Jane went on to become a respected and well paid nurse, which is where her lust for death bloomed. What could have been an inspirational story of perseverance in the face of xenophobia took a dark turn. To this day it is unknown how many people she murdered, but it could be in the hundreds.
Welcome back to another episode! Firstly, Danielle will introduce you to Jolly Jane Toppan a killer nurse from Boston. Don't let her friendly and upbeat nature deceive you. She will quickly turn on her patients by whipping up one of her famous and deadly drug cocktails. Jane believed she was simply helping her elderly and ailing patients reach death faster than they would have already. Later Sandra talks about time slips, a popular science fiction, and fantasy plot device. From the paranormal perspective, a time slip is described as “ a paranormal phenomenon in which a person, or group of people, travel through time via unknown means. Think of all the time travel stories told from novels and movies, but happening to real people. Sandra tells two stories about people who encountered time slips. Megan covers one of the most prolific female serial killers active at the turn of the 20th Century in Massachusetts, Jolly Jane Toppan, the “Angel of Death”.
Yes, we're back with our second look into Mrs. Lavinia Fisher, who you may remember from such atrocities as The Six Mile Wayfarer House, and the crimes she committed there. What crimes you're asking? Well! How about highway robbery and potential murder. You may also recall she was touted as the first female serial killer in American history - a title that may come into question in this episode. Nevertheless, Lavinia was hanged after her husband, while she wore her wedding dress. And you know what happens when evil people die under dramatic circumstances? They haunt the joint! Naturally, the site in which she died plays home to her spirit... and maybe not just hers. Turns out that the Old County Jail has quite a terrible history about it. For over a hundred years it wore many faces, from a hospital and a workhouse, to prisons where people were brutally tortured and killed for their crimes. It was also where many men from the Vesey Revolt were imprisoned and hanged. The grounds itself seem to be cursed, haunted, and just downright evil. So why not open a haunted tour?! Of course somebody did, and because of that, many have witnessed what they believe to be ghosts or spirits wandering the building, including the ghost of Lavinia Fisher. I mean, what do you expect in a place with such a history? Lastly, we talk about maybe the first convicted female serial killer in American history? Yeah, let's go with that. While I believe that Lavinia did commit many a murder, she was never convicted. But you know who was? Jolly Jane Toppan, who was actually born Honora Kelley. Her life was less than ideal in her younger years which probably lead to her infamous future. Mom died young, dad was an abusive alcoholic, and she ended up in an orphanage, if that's not a recipe for a serial killer, I don't know what it. Regardless, she went onto kill a lot of people. But just how many? Well, you'll have to listen to find out. In Part Two, the gals get into the cases of a couple of real-life Angels of Death: nurse "Jolly Jane" Toppan and Nazi monster Josef Mengele, plus a few "doc-tators," including one former ophthalmologist who turned out to be a big fan of chemical weapons. This episode is paired with Whispering Angel Rosé, so grab a bottle and try not to drink the entire liter in one sitting. (Or do, we don't judge.)
