Early Modern Britain was awash with pamphlets, ballads, woodcuts broadcasting bloodthirsty tales of traitorous wives, greedy mistresses, cunning female poisoning lacing the supper with deadly substances; of child killers and spiteful witches, stories of women wholly and unnaturally wicked. These were printed or sung, tacked the walls of alehouses, sold in the streets for pennies and read voraciously to thrill all. But why? When the vast majority of murders then (and now) are committed by men. In this bold, page-turning new history Thou Savage Woman: Female Killers in Early Modern Britain (HarperCollins, 2025), former police officer and historian Dr. Blessin Adams tells stories of women whose violent crimes shattered the narrow confines of their gender – and whose notoriety revealed a society that was at once repulsed by and attracted to murderous female rebellion. Based on detailed research in court archives, each chapter explores murders that thrilled and terrified the British public; the crimes that caused the most concern and provoked the most debate. Women in this period killed rarely, and when they did it was usually within the context of extreme provocation or domestic violence. Adams has the ability of the best crime novelists in recreating the setting in which each case occurred as well as the motivations of each perpetrator. Thou Savage Woman reminds us that women in the past had voices, that they sought to control their bodies and their environments and that they also had the capacity for committing acts of unspeakable violence. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Women are responsible for only 10 per cent of homicides in Australia, Canada, England, and the US, and because it’s such a small sample size not much research has been done into the motives and behaviours that drive female killers. Dr. Kathryn M. Whiteley, a feminist criminologist, has been researching women who kill for over 20 years. She’s spoken to hundreds of women behind bars, many of whom are serving life sentences with no chance of parole. Dr. Whiteley’s focus is on telling their stories and understanding their experiences and perspectives in their own words. You can listen to Dr Kathryn’s conversations on her podcast Self Identities: Conversations With Convicted Women here. THE END BITS Subscribe to Mamamia CREDITS Guest: Kathryn M. Send Kris and Rob a Text Message! The Deadly Obsession of Christa Pike: The Devil in the DetailsBorn on March 10, 1976, Christa Pike grew up with a difficult family life. Her troubled upbringing involved abuse, neglect, and struggles with mental health—factors that, while tragic, would never justify the choices she made as a young woman. By her late teens, Christa found herself at Job Corps, a program designed to help troubled young adults get back on track by providing them with education and training. Here, she met and quickly fell for 17-year-old Tadaryl Shipp, a charismatic young man who would become more than just a boyfriend. Together, they would ignite a deadly obsession. The Backstory: Love, Obsession, and Dark BeliefsChrista Pike and Tadaryl Shipp's relationship was intense and volatile. They were both drawn to the occult, dabbling in devil worship and dark rituals, something that set them apart and fed their shared intensity. Pike's obsession with Shipp was fierce, almost possessive, and she was jealous of anyone she thought might interfere. | One person, in particular, fueled Christa's jealousy: Colleen Slemmer. Colleen, a fellow Job Corps student, had reportedly irritated Christa with minor slights. Pike became convinced that Colleen was trying to seduce Tadaryl, a suspicion that spiraled quickly in her mind. The Crime: A Night of HorrorOn January 12, 1995, Christa Pike, Tadaryl Shipp, and a mutual friend named Shadolla Peterson lured Colleen Slemmer into a secluded, wooded area on the University of Tennessee's agricultural campus in Knoxville. Colleen thought they were going for a walk, perhaps to resolve whatever tension had built up between them. But what awaited her was no peace talk—it was a nightmare. | For the next thirty minutes, Colleen endured torture at the hands of Christa and Tadaryl. Christa Pike smashed Colleen's skull with a large chunk of asphalt, ultimately killing her. But Pike wasn't finished. As a final, chilling souvenir, she kept a piece of Colleen's skull, carrying it with her as if it were a trophy of her conquest. The Aftermath: An Unraveled CrimeChrista Pike's arrogance proved to be her undoing. Bragging about the murder to friends, she showed off the fragment of Colleen's skull as though it were a badge of honor. News of her boasting quickly spread through the Job Corps community and reached the ears of authorities. Within 36 hours, Christa Pike and Tadaryl Shipp were arrested. | During questioning, Pike showed no remorse, relaying the horrific details of the murder with chilling indifference. The physical evidence against her was overwhelming, including Colleen's blood on her clothes and the skull fragment she had so brazenly kept as a memento. | In 1996, Christa Pike was found guilty of first-degree murder. The court, clearly appalled by the brutality of the crime, sentenced her to death. She was just 20 years old, making her the youngest woman on death row in the United States at the time.sources used for this podcastSupport the showJOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussion of graphic sex, murder, dismemberment, necrophilia, and sexual assault. On the night of May 18th, 1936 in Tokyo, Japan, a man named Kichizo Ishida was strangled to death. His body left behind a grotesque (and NSFW) scene, as well as a pretty obvious clue as to who the perpetrator was. In this episode, Madigan tells the story of Sada Abe-a geisha, necrophile who is handy with a knife- and her life before and after meeting and killing Kichizo Ishida. On Monday, August 26th, 1893, 20-year-old Anna Wiese was brutally murdered on her way home from a friend's house. Coined ‘Atrocious Murder in Iowa,' this crime is incredibly hard to get to the bottom of due to multiple factors: the time period, the environment, and lack of criminal analysis. We at Tea Time Crimes have a hunch on who did it, but we want to hear from you, too! Tea of the Day: Twining's Blackcurrant BreezeTheme Music by Brad FrankFor a full list of sources, go to https://tea-time-crimes.simplecast.com/episodes.Sources:Iowa Unsolved Murders: Historic Cases, ““None But a Frenzied Woman”: Murder of Anna Wiese 1893.” By Nancy Bowers, December 2010, https://iowaunsolvedmurders.com/the-murders/murder-of-anna-wiese-1893/“Atrocious Murder in Iowa.” Kansas City Journal, Mon, Aug 28, 1893, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/1023501547/“The Murder of Anna Wiese.” The Sioux City Journal, Tue, Aug 29, 1893, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/416343636/“Isenhart Proves An Alibi.” The Sioux City Journal, Wed, Aug 30, 1893, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/416343776/“Still in the Dark.” The Gazette, Thu, Aug 31, 1893, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/550898120/Audubon Republican, Thu, Oct 26, 1893, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/897356835/“An Iowa Murder Mystery.” The Indianapolis News, Thu, Nov 16, 1893, Page 5, https://www.newspapers.com/image/34515994/“Traced By Her Hair.” Chicago Tribune, Fri, Nov 10, 1893 Page 11, https://www.newspapers.com/image/349828607/“The Gladbrook Mystery.” The Sioux City Journal, Sun, Sep 17, 1893, Page 2, https://www.newspapers.com/image/416347967/“The Bennett-Weise Tragedy.” St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Tue, Nov 14, 1893, Page 2, https://www.newspapers.com/image/571304010/“The Body of Anna Wiese Disturbed for the Third Time.” The Morning Democrat, Wed, Jan 17, 1894, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/299119378/Algona Courier, Fri, Feb 02, 1894 Page 2, https://www.newspapers.com/image/2319179/“The Weise Murder.” The Courier, Tue, Mar 20, 1894 Page 4, https://www.newspapers.com/image/356711136/“Wiese Trial.” The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Thu, Apr 05, 1894 Page 2, https://www.newspapers.com/image/550909705/“Trying to Prove an Alibi.” The Morning Democrat, Sun, Apr 15, 1894, Page 4, https://www.newspapers.com/image/299134797/“A Stricken Juror.” St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Sun, Apr 22, 1894, Page 3, https://www.newspapers.com/image/571297084/“The Second Trial.” The Gazette, Thu, Jul 12, 1894, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/550922456/“Ready To Hear Testimony.” Quad-City Times, Sat, Sep 08, 1894, Page 4, https://www.newspapers.com/image/298970244/“Mrs. Bennett Talks.” The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, Wed, Sep 19, 1894, Page 3, https://www.newspapers.com/image/550811261/“Mrs. Bennett Goes Free.” The Sioux City Journal, Sun, Sep 23, 1894, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/416362325/“Clew to Anna Wiese's Slayer.” The Sioux City Journal, Thu, Oct 04, 1894, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/416365141/The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, Thu, Oct 04, 1894, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/550814070/

In the 1930s, Ohio resident Anna Marie Hahn took the gateway crime of insurance fraud down a dark path of murder. She could not help charming people, convincing them to give her money in their will (think tens of thousands– and this is Great Depression money!), and then making sure that will was in play. We also visit another Ohioan on death row, Dovie Dean, who shared Anna's method of murder but not her motivation. Hear the story of both women and decide for yourself what really happened. Tea of the Day: Howl's Moving Tea House Earl Grey Theme Music by Brad FrankFor a full list of sources, go to https://tea-time-crimes.simplecast.com/episodes.Sources:Anna Marie Hahn: Serial Killer, “The Beautiful Blonde Killer.” By True Crime: Bus Stop Reads, Bus Stop Reads Copyright 2015Huffpost, “Anna Marie Hahn: The First Woman to Die in Ohio's Electric Chair.” By The Lineup, Contributor, Mar 7, 2016 - Updated Dec 6, 2017, https://www.huffpost.com/entry/anna-marie-hahn-the-first_b_9400002“The Lost History of Hester Foster.” By Bucky Cutright, June 21st, 2021, Columbus Underground, https://columbusunderground.com/the-lost-history-of-hester-foster-bc1/“Dovie Dean Dies in Electric Chair.” (Ap) The Cincinnati Enquirer, Sat, Jan 16, 1954, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/100638905/“Three Held in Death of Farmer.” The Cincinnati Post, Thu, Sep 04, 1952, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/762752375/Wife Confesses Poisoning Mate.” The Morning News, Sat, Sep 13, 1952, Page 2, https://www.newspapers.com/image/154516979/“Mrs. Dean in Hospital As 1st Trial Date Arrives.” The Cincinnati Post, Mon, Oct 20, 1952, Page 21, https://www.newspapers.com/image/762732137/“Accused Poison Slayer's Counsel Denies Guilt.” The Cincinnati Post, Tue, Dec 09, 1952, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/762757290/“State Demands Death Penalty As Poison Murder Trial Opens.” The Times Recorder, Wed, Dec 10, 1952 Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/294194274/“Report on Poison.” The Cincinnati Enquirer, Thu, Dec 11, 1952, Page 28, https://www.newspapers.com/image/102840399/“Jury Weighs Mrs. Dean's Fate.” By Arthur Keller, The Cincinnati Post, Sat, Dec 13, 1952, Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/762761070/“Dovie Dean Dies In Electric Chair.” (AP) The Cincinnati Enquirer, Sat, Jan 16, 1954 Page 1, https://www.newspapers.com/image/100638905/“Not Exactly a Blushing Bride, or Weeping Widow.” By Mara Bovsun, Daily News, Sun, Jun 11, 2023, Page 22, https://www.newspapers.com/image/977791681/“Mrs. Hahn In Collapse, Dies in Chair.” By Ralph Donaldson, The Plain Dealer, Thu, Dec 08, 1938, Page 4, https://www.newspapers.com/image/1059664358/

The 3 women had a lot of drama between them. They all hated that they were constantly being compared to one another. Sure, they all ran in the same circles - knew all the same people, but was that really a reason to keep them in competition with one another? Each one felt like they were above the other 2. But Kanae hated Miyuki for a reason that ran a lot deeper than just competition. She hated that her love interest spent a lot of time with Miyuki. What did she have that Kanae didn't? Kanae stated she had never felt jealousy in her entire life - till this moment. She couldn't help but wonder… if her love interest was going to write a book on female serial killers - why couldn't he just have wrote the book about her? Today's case dives into the lives of Japan's 3 most notorious female serial killers and their ongoing hatred for each other in prison. It all starts with a man and ends with a bizarre death in prison. Separated from her husband, Marcus Rogers, Mary had become pregnant and needed to escape one marriage in order to enter another. Murder was her solution. Despite her guilt, thousands rallied for Mary's sentence to be commuted to life in prison and revolted at the court's final decision. Jump into this fascinating case of death penalty history and find out why Mary's trial was one of the cases responsible for Vermont abolishing the death penalty. Tea of the Day: The Child Green TeaTheme Music by Brad FrankSources:You can find the Audiobook by Vance Savage (Mary Mabel Rogers' Great Nephew) here:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFQQGw60Ecoaq7c-cHGZUIAhttps://www.timesargus.com/news/local/the-hanging-of-mary-rogers/article_f126f464-484b-56ab-90ae-77399208692a.htmlhttps://www.suecoletta.com/killing-mary-mabel-rogers/https://newenglandhistoricalsociety.com/mary-rogers-brings-the-capital-punishment-wars-to-vermont/https://murderpedia.org/female.R/r/rogers-mary-mabel.htmhttps://www.rutlandherald.com/news/present-at-the-execution/article_027e35c4-463e-5346-90dc-5cdbd0971a7e.htmlhttps://hls.harvard.edu/today/cases-in-brief-furman-v-georgia-with-carol-steiker/https://crimescribe.com/2020/12/08/on-this-day-in-1908-and-1954-mary-rogers-and-donald-demag-vermonts-first-and-last-20th-century-executions/The Barre Daily Times - 31 Oct 1905, Tue · Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/786621499/St. Albans Weekly Messenger - 07 Dec 1905, Thu · Page 7 https://www.newspapers.com/image/443765286/?terms=mary%20rogers&match=1Bennington Banner - 07 Dec 1968, Sat · Page 5 https://www.newspapers.com/image/546791267/?terms=mary%20rogers&match=1Bennington Banner - 04 Dec 1884, Thu · Page 3 https://www.newspapers.com/image/490846627/Bennington Banner - 08 Dec 1953, Tue · Page 23 https://www.newspapers.com/image/604159322/The Burlington Free Press - 29 Apr 1905, Sat · Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/197254760/The Burlington Free Press - 20 May 1905, Sat · Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/197225484/Show: Deadly Woman: Season 9, Episode 11 - “Murder For Me”

In 1906, a trunk was found on the platform of the Southern Pacific Depot in Stockton, California. The smell led employees to wonder what, or who, might be inside. Within hours, the police were on the hunt for Emma LeDoux, a woman with a trail of (mostly living) men behind her. Though she was the last person to see the unfortunate victim, Albert McVicar, she will cling to innocence. Tony speaks with True Crime Writer and Professor Harold Schechter about his book Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Gunness, Butcher of Men. In the pantheon of serial killers, Belle Gunness stands alone. She was the rarest of female psychopaths, a woman who engaged in wholesale slaughter, partly out of greed but mostly for the sheer joy of it. Between 1902 and 1908, she lured a succession of unsuspecting victims to her Indiana “murder farm". Some were hired hands. Others were well-to-do bachelors. All of them vanished without a trace. When their bodies were dug up, they hadn't merely been poisoned, like victims of other female killers. They'd been butchered.Hell's Princess is a riveting account of one of the most sensational killing sprees in the annals of American crime: the shocking series of murders committed by the woman who came to be known as Lady Bluebeard. The only definitive book on this notorious case and the first to reveal previously unknown information about its subject, Harold Schechter's gripping, suspenseful narrative has all the elements of a classic mystery - and all the gruesome twists of a nightmare.Be sure to like and share this episode!
