Listeners of Horror Shots Podcast that love the show mention: casey,Balor was the leader of the Fomorians in Irish Myth. He was a tyrant and warrior in Irish Folklore. Disclaimer: I'm bird sitting, and the little bugger literally never stops chirping or screaming. I understand if you want to skip this one as he's very present throughout. This week I'm talking about end times, and the most obvious sign that tends to herald it in: The Four Horsemen. Yup, those cheery chaps who ride in carrying war, famine, disease, and of course, death. This is, of course, the Biblical rendition of what occurs when Jesus has had enough of us, but it's still interesting nonetheless. New Zealand, 2010 is our setting for today's episode, for that is where the poor soul known as Scott Guy was unceremoniously gunned down in the driveway of the farm he partly owned. While there were some persons of interest, the police really only ever focused on one suspect: Scott's brother-in-law, Ewen Macdonald. Between behavioral issues on Macdonald's side, and family drama basically everywhere, Ewen was arrested and went to trial for the murder of Scott Guy, but was he found guilty, or is the true culprit still at large to this day? So, let's pretend the last five months didn't happen (god, how I wish that were true...), and that this episode went up directly after the last :). Anyway, I'm back with an episode that is sort of a shout out to the origins of this podcast: Ancient Myths! Specifically Mesopotamia. I really do love this era, and it's sort of like the origins of all modern cultural lore. Today we're talking about the Wonder Woman of ancient history: Ishtar. She was the goddess of love, but also war! How cool is that. She's both a lover and a fighter, which is super badass. Anyway, listen to the episode for all the goodies! The case that inspired a few different movies and shows, the case of Anneliese Michel is one of the most important exorcism cases in history. When a body washed ashore near San Diego, it was a mystery as to what happened. Missing limbs and pieces of flesh torn from the body, many assumed it was a vicious shark attack. But upon closer inspection, that may not have been the case. Many Autopsies, and a few reexaminations later. shark attack was ruled out. So what happened to Michelle Von Emster that fateful day in April of '94? I got nothing for a witty title here. Operation Midnight Climax was an off-shoot of sorts of MKUltra, so you know it's got some terrible stuff associated with it. While maybe not as known as say Ted Bundy, Richard Speck was still a notorious criminal who slipped through the cracks of the justice system one too many times. Yes, my apartment went up in a blaze. Thankfully the fire department was quick and nobody was injured, but much of the complex got damaged. The unit that caught was below me, and I had my windows open at the time (wasn't home when it started), so sadly my microphone got damaged by a mixture of smoke and heat. Sorry for the lateness of this, but you should expect that by now... The Shark Arm Murders refer to a notorious criminal case that took place in Sydney, Australia, in 1935. The case gained significant media attention due to its bizarre and macabre nature. In April 1935, a large tiger shark was caught in the waters near Coogee Beach. When the shark was displayed at the Coogee Aquarium Baths, it vomited out a human arm with a rope tied around its wrist. The arm was promptly identified as belonging to James Smith, a missing ex-boxer and small-time criminal. So, I'm back after a bit of a surprise break again. My bad! Anyway, we're back with another true crime case this week, and it's the mystery surrounding the Jamison Family and their strange disappearance. It happened back in 2009 when the family, Bobby, Sherilynn, and daughter Madyson, packed everything up and went in search of some land to build a home upon. Only they never found the land, and they never returned. It wasn't overly surprising to friends that they vanished as the parents, Bobby and Sherilynn, had issues with substance abuse and drugs. They were also into the occult, which, of course is the actual reason for their vanishing. I hope you picked up the sarcasm there... Anywhoo, the theories about their disappearance are vast and varied. And I'll go over all that in the episode! So I tested out Chat GPT to see if it could lend any more insight on the topic. It... It did not. But it did write me a nice summery of events that was condensed down to a nice ten minutes. Let's take a break from the dreary true crime stuff for a sec and look at some fun ancient history and mythology for a change! Today we're talking about Theia, who is sort of a forgotten God now-a-days, but in ancient Greece, she was super important. She is responsible for basically all the light around us, and out ability to see... period. She's the Goddess of the sun, light, sight, and wisdom, among other things. Her role became a little less important as time went on, but through her kids, Helios, Eos, and Selene, her legacy lived on. Back in '05 a man did the unthinkable. After what can only be assumed to be a pretty bad family squabble, George Arsoniadis decided he needed to kill his sister in the very condo they had just moved into together. It wasn't even a week after they moved that neighbors complained about a foul smell coming from the unit. Police got involved, and not long after, George was arrested and sat in jail. The police found something out of a horror movie in the dwelling - body parts stashed in freezers and all sorts of gruesome pieces of evidence. George faced trial, and the outcome might just cause your blood to boil. Back in the early 60's, a guy wanted to take his family on a private cruise. That's all. He chartered a ketch out of Florida and spent a week at sea with his family, the ship's captain, the captain's wife. What they didn't expect was to never be heard from again, except for one touch as nails little girl. She was known as the Sea Orphan, but her real name was Terry-Job Duperrault. Upon hearing of her survival, the other survivor, who was thought the be the lone one, Julian Harvey asked to be excused from talking to the police. He then went to a motel and slashed various parts of his body, killing himself. In what was believed to be an insurance fraud situation gone awry, Harvey killed his wife, then what he thought was the entirety of the Duperrault family, before escaping a sinking ship. It's a fascinating tale with a lot of crazy details, so you'll just have to listen! Back in 1981, an incredibly talented actress supposedly fell overboard and drown by complete accident. That is if you believe the original reports on Natalie Wood. However, if you believe the updates from around 2011 and beyond, the actress's death was no mere accident. Married to Robert Wagner, and on a boat with Christopher Walken, Wood apparently got into an argument with her husband before everything went silent. This is according to the boat captain. He went to check on the couple when he discovered that Natalie was nowhere to be seen, and only a calm Wagner in his cabin saying that Natalie took the dingy and fled the boat. Other reports from a nearby boat say they heard a woman calling for help for about half an hour before the cries ceased. Death is a weird thing. It's really one of the few things in the universe we know about, but know almost nothing about. What really happens when we die? Do we go in the clouds, does everything turn black, or do we maybe come back as another person; almost like a respawn in a video game. Well, if you believe what happened to the Pollocks, then its certainly the latter. The Pollocks were a young family in the mid 1950's, they had two daughters and lived a small, peaceful town in England. Everything was great until it wasn't. Thanks to a distraught woman who downed a few too many pills, the two Pollock girls were run down at ages 11 and 6. The tragedy was brutal, and took it's toll on the parents - that is until they unexpectedly gave birth two identical twins a year later. Twins who had shockingly similar characteristics to their late sisters, even down to birthmarks and scars. It's a bizarre story, and one you'll have to listen to all the way through. Yes, you read that wordy title right. in late 2010 a man by the name of Matthew Hoffman entered the home of the Herrmann's, killed Tina (Mom), Kody (Son), and Stephanie (mom's friend), dismembered them and stashed them away. On top of that, he kidnapped 13-year-old Sarah and kept her captive for four long days. He did unspeakable things to poor Sarah who, when found, was just worried about her school attendance. Hoffman was dubbed the leaf killer not just because he was profession tree trimmer, but more so due to the fact his home was filled floor to ceiling with leaves. A region I have neglected for far too long has been Asian, and Japan more specifically. The culture in the east is so rich and depthy that I feel bad for not covering more of it. So today I bring you the Oni! The Oni is a monster of sorts that has a varied origin story. Some say it's a demon, others a spirit of some kind. To some, they are protectors, others; tormentors. Yes, today we're looking at the conclusion of the Dardeen Family Murders. Sadly there isn't much of a conclusion to the case, but we had to close it out by looking at the main suspect, and how he may or may not have been involved. Tommy Lynn Sells was sitting on death row in Texas for another murder when he confessed to killing the Dardeens. While he knew some of the details of the case, he had a hard time keeping his story straight, and he didn't really reveal many details outside of what was publicly known, and when he did, they were vague guesses, or so some thought. Also, I meant to get this up yesterday, on the big ol' V-Day. So excuse the references to that in there. Let's just pretend I have my crap together and it went up when it was supposed to. Back in '87 a man was thought to have murdered his entire family. However, that didn't last too long as his body was found roughly a day later. That man was Keith Dardeen, and he was originally thought to have been the perpetrator of a truly heinous crime. Unfortunately, his body too was found some ways away from the scene. This left police stumped. Nothing was taken from the house, and his wife, Elaine, had not been sexually assaulted in any way. There didn't appear to be a motive, though the area of Illinois that this took place in had become a bit of a hotbed for criminal activity. The family had even planned on moving back to Keith's hometown due to the increase in crime. The details of the murder are pretty brutal, and certainly aren't for the faint of heart, so consider this your warning. So yeah, sometimes people burn from the inside out and ultimately die. Even odder still is that this seems to happen for no reason whatsoever, they just melt away, leaving nothing behind by a greasy stain and their feet. Now, even odder-er is that usually in these cases, everything around them is near spotless. If the person goes up while sitting in a rocking chair, the chair unmarred by the flame. Just the person seems to catch ablaze, and then, poof, just as quickly as it happened, it stops. Of course there are some science type people out there who don't really believe that somebody could just burst into flame without an ignition source, but those same people always just say that a cigarette ember travelled through the air from Chicago to Toronto and lit poor Sheila on fire. Anyway, it's a pretty interesting topic with a few notable cases throughout history. Check it out, why don't ya. I'm back to finish up the Cindy James story, and sadly, it doesn't have a happy ending. Poor Cindy spent the better part of a decade being harassed and tormented by an unknown assailant. She was left terrifying messages, her home was broken into, and her place set on fire on multiple occasions. The RCMP investigated and spent more than a million dollars on looking into these events for Cindy, until eventually they sort of gave up. The said she was likely doing this to herself and that was that. Well, that was that until she died. She was found in the backyard of an abandoned house, hogtied, with a cocktail of drugs in her system. Around the scene was graffiti, and everything pointed to murder. Her stalker had finally got her... Right? Well, the RCMP concluded that this was a suicide, if you can believe that. During an inquiry into the case, a knot expert said she could have tied herself up before the effects of all the narcotics in her system kicked in. I don't know if I believe that. Regardless, her case was eventually closed citing the entire thing as an unknown event. Yes, I know, it's been a hot minute, and I'm deeply sorry for that. But we're back talking some true crime, Canadian true crime nonetheless. Cindy James went through quite the ordeal in the 80's as she was stalked, intimidated, assaulted, and all around harassed for years. Many suspected it was her ex-husband, but the number of accounts and witnesses suggest maybe it wasn't. What Cindy endured was, frankly, ridiculous. I won't go into all the details here, but she did end up in the hospital multiple times. Despite the best efforts of a P.I. and a boyfriend who was a cop, the harassment continued. She moved, she changed her number, and even changed her car colour to hide her identity, but it was to no avail. The perpetrator seemed to know her every move, leaving a letter for her the day she arrived home from a lengthy trip. But what happened in the end? Yes, it's Halloween, so what better time to drop an episode about witches? Well, one witch anyway, and she went by the name Alice Kyteler. Back in April of '81 a terrible act took place in the cabins of Keddie, California. It's like something out of a movie, really. A young girl returned to her cabin after a night at her friend's place, however not all was well when she walked on a brutal scene. Before her lay her mother, brother, and her brother's friend, all dead. But not just dead, but rather killed in such a vicious manner that it'd be almost uncouth to talk about. What she didn't see was her other siblings. Thankfully two boys sleeping in a room not more than 10 feet from where the murders took place were unharmed. However, the youngest sister was nowhere to be found. The investigation was rife with corruption and just terrible police work - like every crime scene on this podcast, really. Aliens seem to love the south, I mean, why wouldn't they? It's warm, there's that infamous southern hospitality, there's Mexican food, man, if I were an alien, I'd go there. But that's beside the point, today we're looking at aliens, and a case that took place in Lubbock, Texas. This is an interesting one for the sole reason that the most prominent witnesses were actual real life doctors. Not Medical Doctors, but just regular old doctors of other things. Nevertheless, the credibility for the sightings couldn't have been held in higher regard. There was, of course, an investigation into the sighting, which a lot of people saw, not just a handful of doctors. The conclusion of said investigation... well, that lead to a bit of disappointment and none answers. But it's still a fun look into some aliens, so if that's your jam, then you're in for a treat! Before we begin, I just want to say happy International Podcast Day! Every day is a great day to celebrate your favorite podcasts, but if you want an excuse to leave a review, or share it on social media, today's the day to do it! Now onto the episode rundown! Back in 2010 a young boy from Oregon simply vanished sometime before school started on a regular June day. Now, this may not sound too strange; sadly people and kids go missing all the time, however what makes this one unique is that for roughly an hour before the 9am role call, Kyron Horman's Stepmom, Terri was helping him set up for a science fair later in the day. She waved goodbye to him as he stood in his school's hallway. However when the 3pm school bus came and went with no sign of him, Terri and his biological father, Kaine, went to the school where it was discovered that Kyron had been marked absent all day. From there the largest search in Oregon history kicked off. There weren't many suspects, in fact, really just one: Terri. She was the last to see him, and it was later discovered she had an intense hatred for the boy. However, nothing could ever be proven, despite her failing not one, but two polygraphs. It's been over a decade, and there has never been another trace of the young boy. It's a sad story, like all these true crime cases. Yeah, yeah, terrible joke aside, this is a topic that's been on my radar for a while, and now I can say I've covered the Mongolian Death Worm, even though it's a bit of a misnomer. The MDW is not quite a worm... well, it's not quite anything, really. It's a sausage like, blood filled intestine looking creature with a toothy maw on either end, and it grows to about five feet long, which doesn't exactly scream terrifying, BUT, I guess if it's a worm that big, it's a little off-putting. I mean, five feet is sort of in that range where it's not scary, but not cute, but I digress. Many have tried to capture some evidence of this elusive beast, but so far none have succeeded, even if one of those intrepid adventurers dedicated decades to the hunt. He determined that it must be little more than a myth. But what do you think? Some cryptids seem, plausible, and some seem out of left field: where do you think the Mongolian Death Worm falls? Sadly, back in 1974 a woman's body was found in the dunes of Provincetown, Massachusetts, which by some accounts is a sleepy little town. On of top of the body being found, it was found by a 12 year old girl who chased a neighborhood dog off the trail. Even sadder still is that the woman is called The Lady of The Dunes to this day. Why? Well, not only was her killer never found - she was never truly found. Handless and nearly decapitated, the poor girl was never identified, and it's terribly difficult to catch a killer when you don't even know who it was that had been killed. The details of her death are fairly brutal, and the fact that she'd never been identified is truly disturbing and heartbreaking. A soul snuffed out, and a body buried with no name. I can't think of much sadder. There had been theories a plenty about what happen and who she was. Author Joe Hill even tossed a theory around that included the movie Jaws. Other's believed she was taken out by Whitey Bulger. However, none of these theories could be substantiated in anyway. But podcast topic requests are freeeee! Today we're talking about the Queen Mary, a ship that made the Titanic look like a little wuss. She's a biggin that made over 1000 North Atlantic trips, and any good sailor will tell you that's a terrible route. I know because a sailor on a TV show said that once. So, total expert here. Anyway, in the 60's she retired and became a hotel and museum. Oh, and she's haunted, naturally. Housing over 150 ghosts and/or spirits, its regarded as one of the most haunted locations in the world. But is it really all it's cracked up to be? I don't know, you be the judge! Hey all! My lack of uploads lately can be attributed to one thing. A little demon of pure evil! Merlin, the Cockapoo. Yeah, a puppy. Anybody who's ever had one knows exactly what I'm talking about. He's a terror, but I'm determined to make him the best little guy in the world. But until then, he's taking all of my waking, non-working hours. So the podcast will be on a bit of a hiatus. But thank you for sticking with me!
Ah yes, one of the weirdest things to happen to the human body since puberty, the dream. For as long as humans have been around, dreams have been right there baffling them to an unheard of degree. Hell, it's 2022, and dreams still confuse the crap out of me. But with that said, people as far back as ancient Greece (and probably before that) had their own thoughts on what dreams meant. From prophecies to omens, dreams meant a few different things, depending on who was studying them. As far as technology and science has come, dreams are still a bit of a mystery. Sure, we know why we have them, and what causes them in a scientific sense, but is there a meaning behind them? Can one really predict future events just by dreaming about it? Who knows! That's half the fun, having that little mystery linger over us when we dream about a humanoid cat chef, in an apron cooking a meal made of pillows. On this podcast we don't discriminate based on anything: race, religion, sexual orientation, or cryptid. That's right, all cryptids are treated as equals here, including the lesser known Owlman of Mawnan. Now, given my affinity for owls, I'm surprised, and frankly disappointed in myself that I'd not heard of this interesting little fella before. But, as my wife says a little too often: Better late than never. Bad jokes aside, the Owlman of Mawnan is spotted in a very specific part of the English countryside in the Cornwall region. Even more specifically it's spotted around a couple of churched, St. Mawnan and St. Stephen's. So, what is it? By all accounts, it's roughly a four foot tall humanoid creature with very owl life features. It's never attacked or harmed a person, and generally just watches before flying off. Sure, it's spooky, but ultimately harmless. Could it be related to the Mothman? Well, that's one theory. Aliens could also play a part in this mystery, but like most cryptids, we don't have a whole lot of evidence, other than a handful of sightings in a 20 year span. It's an age old question that I just thought of. Carmilla was a novel written by Sheridan Le Fanu in 1871-ish, while Dracula had its run in 1897. So, I guess that answers that. Carmilla was indeed first, but in the grand scheme of things, does that make a huge difference? Both of these novels had their own influence and helped usher the vampire into the horror world. Both Stoker and Le Fanu were pioneers in the field of supernatural horror, and I'd rather not compare them, but rather celebrate both! How diplomatic of me, eh? Okay, Okay, that title is a bit misleading. The drums didn't actually belong to a poltergeist... or did they? That's the question that plagued John Mompesson and his family back in 1661. The story goes that Mompesson was a magistrate and was quite disliked by people of lower stature in the time - the homeless, the nomadic peoples, etc... Well, one day he confiscated the drums of a vagrant by the name of William Drury. Wouldn't you know it, when John got home, the drums were at his home, waiting for him. He paid no mind to it at first, but then weird stuff started to happen. You guessed it, the sound of drums began to play in the house, which were heard throughout the neighborhood as well. It all came to a head when John's kids became the target for the haunting. Beds, and well, people started to levitate, noised and moving objects plagued the family as well. It wasn't until Drury was shipped off to the colonies in North America that the activity stopped. Coincidence? Who knows. What happened to the Mompesson family? Was Drury really responsible? You'll just have to listen to find out! No, he didn't. He still died in Kansas city, however once his identity was discovered, his family received all sorts of calls and letters from people claiming to either be Artemus, or people who claimed to have known him. One of those calls cam from a man who said Ogletree saved him in a fight, where he lost his thumb. He was unable to write due to that, oh, and he also jumped on a ship, sailed to Egypt, and married a wealthy woman. Yeah, none of that actually happened. It was either some kind of weird joke, or somebody trying to cover their tracks, a theme that pops up once or twice. Beyond those phone calls and letters, an anonymous party called the funeral home that housed Ogletree's body and paid for a proper funeral - this was before his identity was truly known. The woman on the phone claimed he was essentially killed because he was cheating on his fiancée; again this is unsubstantiated, but they did come through and pay for a proper funeral. In the end, this is one weird ass case with quite a bit of intrigue to it. Mr. Ogletree checked into the Hotel President under the name Roland T. Owen; he later checked out dead. Yeah, sorry, that was probably a really lame segue into this episode, but I did it, it's written in stone, so be it. So, how did he die, who killed him, why did he go by another name? Most of those are indeed mysteries, except part of the cause of death. What's really weird about this case is that he used a false name to check into the hotel, was simply hitchhiking across the country to start a new life - not like he was running from anything, just wanted to move out west - and ultimately ended up dead. It appeared he was very much tortured prior to his death, and hotel employees had some interesting things to say about the man, from the room he requested, to the way he kept it, to some unusual characters that paid him a visit. He died in Kansas City, Missouri on his way to California. Why there? What was so important about him that he needed to die? Well, all that will be answered, well to the best of my ability, next week. But for now, here's the set up to the events that lead to Ogletree's death. It's been a long week, but I wanted to get something up for you. So here's the short story of Blodeuwedd, the Flower-faced creation of a Celtic wizard! Over the past few months, I've really began to feel something stirring inside me. Usually that means a trip to the doctor, but this time it was different. I don't get a lot of feelings towards things, and I don't think I've ever had a "connection" with anything either, then seemingly out of nowhere, I had the sudden urge to look up owls, and everything associated with them, and I believe a connection was made. Perhaps it started nearly a decade ago when I left work and perched upon a telephone pole in the parking lot near my car was a big ol' snowy owl. It was the middle of a snow storm, but there he was, clear as day. So that's where this week's episode comes into play. I wanted to look at any sort of myths, legends, and folklore associated with owls. From Europe and Africa, to the indigenous peoples of North America, the owl has played a roll in their legends and culture. From representing wisdom, to death and despair, back to wisdom again, the symbolism of owls has gone through quite the evolution. Back in Ontario in the 1940's a young couple eloped, they went on their honeymoon at a lovely cottage on a stunning lake, and lived happily ever after... Well, they did for about 8 days anyway until the bride, Christina Kettlewell was found dead in just 9 inches of water. And because we're looking at it, there's gotta be some crazy twist, right? Naturally. Honeymoon's are meant for just the newlyweds, so most people found it strange when the couples friend, Ronald Barrie joined them. In fact, it seemed the three were inseparable. Perhaps it was some kind of love triangle, or an insurance scheme, or even suicide. But whatever it was that happened at that cottage will forever be lost to the annals of time. One last note on it: the cottage also burned down the same day Christina was found, sooooooooo...... I'm sure we've all had the sense of De Ja Vu, where we swear we've experienced whatever's going on in the moment before. But have you ever had that feeling with yourself? That's a weird question, but to put it bluntly: have you ever seen yourself? Maybe it was in passing, maybe you were taking a stroll down the street and you spotted something a little too familiar across the road. You snap your head over and swear you saw yourself going the other way. The Doppelganger is a very weird phenomenon that basically describes what I just said. Usually it's associated with bad omens, or even death, but not always. The few reports throughout history that I could find did have many people dying after seeing themselves, though one prominent figure didn't survive long after the encounter. Social media is also rife with stories of glitches in the matrix where somebody has seen a bus full of what looks like clones, or people running into another on a plane who looks, dresses, acts, sounds just like them. Well, what's going on with these instances? Are they you from another dimension, is it pure happenstance, is it the genetic code recycling itself? Well, the true answer is, we have no idea. But if you want to hear more about it, you'll just have to listen to the full episode. Here we are with the conclusion of the mysterious death of Marilyn Sheppard. When we last left off Sam had been tried and convicted of the murder. However, in 1966, roughly ten years into his sentence, he was released on appeal with judges all over the world basically saying he didn't get a fair trial because of the media circus involved with the case. So, with Sam released and a free man, there was naturally a retrial, which found him not guilty, and in 1997, DNA evidence completely exonerated him. So happy ending, right? Well, not so fast. Presumably due to the stress of... well, his life, Sam became an alcoholic, which eventually did him in. He died in 1970. But not before transitioning from Doctor to... Professional wrestler, where he went by, and I shit you not, Killer Sam Sheppard. Yeah, little on the head that one. Nevertheless, he proved to be popular enough, and used his medical knowledge to create one of the most famous submission moves in modern wrestling, the Mandible Claw. The answer to the rhetorical title is... Maybe? Shockingly, this case has nothing to do with his doctoring abilities and everything to do with the murder of his wife, whom he may or may not have killed. But, I'm getting ahead of myself here. Samuel Sheppard and his wife Marilyn were a married couple back in the 1950's, that is until one night after a having some friends over to their lakehouse, Samuel awoke to the cries of his wife. By the time he reached the bedroom, Marilyn had been beaten to death, along with their unborn child. Sam was promptly knocked unconscious before he could intervene, and when he snapped to, his wife was dead. He chased what he described as a white form down onto the beach where he was once again rendered unconscious. That's all the details I really have on the murder, but the most fascinating thing about this case is what comes afterwards. In a messy trial by media, which was described as a carnival at times, Dr. Samuel Sheppard was arrested, tried, and convicted of killing his wife. Yup, mystery solved, end of discussion, right? Well, wait a minute here. There are some important details I've left out on purpose so you'll just have to listen to the entire episode to find out all the nitty gritty details!
