In this heart-opening episode of the Free Radical Podcast, Swami Padmanabha sits in warm, searching dialogue with renowned Vaishnava musician, author, and sincere seeker Bali Rico. Born in the United States to Colombian parents and raised partly in the sacred atmosphere of Mayapur, Bali's formative years unfolded amidst ashram life, devotional sound, and the living rhythms of ancient India. As co-founder of the kirtan collective Mayapuris, his innovative mridanga playing helped shape what many now recognize as the “Mayapur sound”—dynamic, immersive, and communal at heart. But Bali's artistry does not end in kirtan. A lyricist and multi-instrumentalist, his hip hop expression carries the pulse of a born percussionist—intricate in rhythm, philosophical in depth, and confessional in tone. His music becomes a space where protest and prayer meet… where social critique reveals hidden layers of grief, longing, and sacred vulnerability. In this rich exchange, Swami Padmanabha and Bali explore:✨ Kirtan as a social and spiritual phenomenon✨ The necessity of communion—and the realizations we cannot reach alone✨ Growing up in a religious family while meeting the outer world✨ Fatherhood and the inner shifts it awakens✨ Hip hop as sacred confession and emotional truth-telling✨ The dialogue between science and spirituality✨ Building a mature, relatable, and sustainable spiritual life informed by multiple disciplines What unfolds is more than conversation—it is a meeting of hearts, a weaving of sound, philosophy, culture, and lived experience into a shared inquiry on what it means to be human in devotion. Thank you for being part of this ongoing conversation.

People who are bought and sold in politics, for instance, they may go along with treachery or despotism because they don't want to lose their job. Happens all the time. People just hang on because they think, "Well, anyway. Maybe it will blow over. Nobody will notice," but they just don't want to lose their job. And I mentioned, maybe the other night, that when the demigods were observing the fight between Hiraṇyakaśipu and Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, Narasiṁhadeva had captured Hiraṇyakaśipu, had him in his clutches. Now the devas, whose homes, whose realms, whose jobs, services, everything had been usurped by Hiraṇyakaśipu, were watching the fight. It says from behind the clouds, because they wanted everything back. They wanted all their stuff back. They wanted status quo back. So they were watching. What did Lord Narasiṁhadeva do during the fight? He caught Hiraṇyakaśipu. What happened after that? It appeared as if Hiraṇyakaśipu slipped away. What did the demigods think then? "Now we're really finished, because we were rooting for the enemy." Think of that: the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears and you have some doubt of whether he's going to win or not, and you're also thinking, "I just rooted for the people. The guy who's fighting against him, Hiraṇyakaśipu, is really going to come get me now." Imagine the kind of stricture that he's going to give to us now that we rooted for the enemy. These are very high-minded personalities. They are servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but they are attached. As it turns out, Lord Narasiṁhadeva is half cat, right? What do cats do when they catch a mouse? Have you ever seen it? When we were going door to door, there was a cat in Colorado on somebody's lawn. The cat was just sitting there and a little mouse was hopping around. As soon as the mouse would get a few inches outside a radius, the cat would catch it and pull it back and then wait for it. If anybody knows cats, they like to play with their prey before they crunch them up. In the same way, Lord Narasiṁhadeva let go, Prabhupāda said, because he has that feeling like, "Let him go, pull him back again." Then, of course, he ripped him into shreds. But in that case, we see that Prahlāda didn't mind at all. In fact, he wasn't afraid at all of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. In the whole mess he wasn't afraid because he was completely detached. All he wanted was service to his spiritual master. .------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Lord Caitanya said 'devotee Vaidya.' The Vaishnava, is a doctor. Doctors got a little black bag. Doctors used to make home calls, and Lord Chaitanya says, 'What does he have in that little bag?' That little black bag? The doctor, the Vaishnava doctor, has hymns and instructions—two things to cure the disease of Maya. And it requires this personal touch. Somebody's going to knock on the door. Otherwise, what are they going to do? I'll give you one guess what they're going to do. It starts with an 'S' and ends with two 'L's: Everyone's scrolling! Used to be watching television, but now it's just scrolling. Nobody's doing anything but scrolling. That's why people can't pass a budget. That's why people can't get along. They're too busy scrolling. So, until we knock on the door and say, 'Hare Krishna, and here, please, please be our friend.Radha Krishna bolo, Sange Cholo, ei matra bhikha chai. Our bhikha is only asking people, 'Why don't you just come and chant Hare Krishna with us?' Because you can't have any more fun than we're having in the Krishna conscious movement. It's impossible, because this is the spiritual world. It's just flat-out fun to be with devotees, to chant Hare Krishna, to read Bhagavad Gita. This is the real life. Everything else is a wanna-be life, and it just isn't working. So Krishna again and again gives opportunity, and his touch is very personal. It's one point I'd like to make today: everything's personal. And I'm charmed, frankly charmed, when I read in the Second Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam, 'kare spṛśan,' which means that Krishna shook Brahma's hand and he said, 'Bhadram te -Good luck, Brahma.' "See, that feels good. Everyone wants to do that. If we go in sankirtan, if you're on a road with busy traffic and you see somebody on the other side of the street and you go like this (shows a fist bump), they'll cross traffic, risking life and limb of being run over just to do this, because everyone's missing that. They don't have the personal touch. They want somebody to reach out to them and say, 'Oh, please, touch my soul. Touch my heart.' They can't get it in the material world because everyone's busy with themselves, being frustrated again and again in the love that's professed here. Maybe there's a glimmer, but we can't hold it. People are looking for that deep, loving exchange with Suhrit, their old friend, Krishna. So when Krishna starts the Sampradaya, he puts his good will into it. He speaks to Brahma; he shakes Brahma's hand. He tells him, 'Good luck with making this creation and also passing down the knowledge so that people can take it,' and it's an unbroken line of discipline succession. There are detours, but it's an eternal message that comes down, and Srila Vyasadeva helps to put it into order so that we can take advantage of it and distribute it to others. So we have a lifetime—or many lifetimes—of service, it's an eternal service to enter into that. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------

In this talk, we discuss a very subtle, high-level and easily misunderstood mode of spiritual practice: madhura bhāva, the practice of seeing God as your lover! In Vaishnava literature this is considered the highest mood because it contains all the others and is itself the most refined and passionate of the moods. The whole soul goes to God in fiery yearning! There is actually quite a precedent for this in the Christian tradition. It's called "bridal mysticism." Nuns in the Catholic faith see themselves, in some orders, as "brides of Christ." The whole idea is the transformation of eros! But this mood isn't just for monks and nuns. Householders can practice it too by seeing their spouse/partners as the embodiment of the Divine and serving them as they would God.The idea of ”making love to God" is of course very challenging because of narratives of shame and sin around sexuality so the first step in this kind of practice is to recognize the innate innocence of that energy, which is a form of spiritual energy, Kundalini. Then, through loving acceptance, we attempt to "divinize" that energy by directing it towards God in a gradual process of sublimation.Sri Ramakrishna literally worshipped his wife as the Divine Mother though you might say this came under the category of vātsalya-bhāva since Ramakrishna looked upon all women as his Mother. Note also that they had a completely chaste marriage meaning that's it's possible to practice this mode even without physical intimacy (There are much deeper and more refined versions of intimacy with a partner than the merely physical, after all!) though it certainly can include it in the case of having a partner. The best example is of course Rādha and her passionate, all-consuming love for Sri Krishna. Meerabai felt herself to be “married to Krishna” and actually had a ceremony performed. We also find this mood in Shaiva saints like Mahadevi-Akka. Sri Ramakrishna even told M. in the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna (in the entry on Thursday, August 24th 1882) that through devotion one develops a “love sexual organ” implying that, mystically speaking, it is possible to quite literally make love to God.While this mood is mostly found in the Vaishnava traditions (as love for Sri Krishna) some versions also exist in the Shaiva world. After all, many people often ask me about whether it's okay for them to think of Shiva/Devī as their romantic partner. I hope to address that question tonight! This is of course a natural continuation of our lectures on “Why is Kali Desirous?” and “What Does Kali Really Want?” and perhaps the subtlest of the series! Wish me luck! For more detailed instructions for how to perform Kālī pūjā, watch this playlist: https://www.patreon.com/collection/233799Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

Be swept away by the flow of intermystical spirituality as Swami Padmanabha and Brother Alberto Varona explore the interweaving of their journeys in mystical traditions. Brother Alberto, a devout member of the Community of Francis and Claire, clinical psychologist, and director of campus ministry at Saint Xavier University, shares his profound journey back to his deepened roots in Christianity after practicing Gaudiya Vaishnavism for nearly two decades. In a unique and enriching dialogue, Swami Padmanabha and Brother Alberto delve into an exploration of practical and theological mystical Christianity and Gaudiya Vaishnavism, and discover a richer, more interconnected understanding of these profound spiritual paths. Stepping into the perspective of each other's traditions, they (and we) are able to look back at their own with a more nuanced and richer vision. Some of the threads of this rich conversational tapestry are:•What is the relationship between the certainty of religion and the mystery of God•What would faith look like if it was grounded in belovedness?•How do shame and feelings of unworthiness impact our approach to our practice and our relationship with God?•What is the relationship between mystical spirituality and institutional religion and how do them impact each other•The practice of presence in mystical traditions—God's omnipresence and our own omniabsence•The influx of grace.•What is the ultimate relationship with God for which they each aspire.•How nonduality leads to unified diversity. Is Sanskrit more than just a language? Why are Hindu texts rooted in this language, and what sets it apart from others? What beauty lies within it, and how does it illuminate various aspects of spirituality? Sanskrit is intricately linked to Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). Many sacred texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and various sutras, were composed in Sanskrit. As a result, Sanskrit is deeply intertwined with the spiritual and philosophical traditions of India.About the guest:Sahadevananda met Paramahamsa Vishwananda in 2004 and was initiated as a Brahmacari in 2022. Taking to heart Paramahamsa Vishwananda's personal instruction of studying the bhakti literature, he's taken a deep dive into Sanskrit and Vaishnava scriptures, which has in recent years led him to serve as a member of the Knowledge Department in SPN.Watch Thinking Bhakti on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@SwamiRevatikaantaofficial

Knut A. Hinduism is a global religion with a significant presence in many countries throughout the world. The most important cause of this global expansion is migration. This book presents and analyses the most important of the geographies, migration histories, religious traditions and developments, rituals, places, institutions, and representations of Hinduism in the diasporas, capturing some of the great plurality of Hindu religious traditions.  The first part of the book concentrates on the major regions in the world in which Hindu diasporas are found. The main focus is the modern period, but the book discusses also the possibility of premodern Hindu diasporas in Southeast Asia. The second part focuses on specific central themes such as Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta traditions in diasporas, temples, and traditions of sacred sites and pilgrimage outside of South Asia, Hindutva organizations and the diaspora, as well as relations between Hindu diasporas and new followers of Hindu traditions. The chapters in this book show some of the global presence of the Hindu diasporas and some of the dynamic developments in multiple geographical spaces. Analysing specific spaces and themes, the chapters of the book offer a foundation for understanding the Hindu traditions in its most important global diasporic contexts and the dynamic developments around the world.
