Terrible, shocking news this morning. Andrew Lee, of the Justice and Drew morning show on Twin Cities News Talk AM 1130, passed away suddenly over the weekend.I was in studio with him just this past Thursday, as I had been many times before. It was routine. It was normal. He was vibrant, energetic, and enthused, as he had been every time I saw him - quick to laugh, interested in people's stories, eager to offer help and insight. There was nothing to suggest it would be the last time I would see him.In her post, Samantha Sansevere talked about Drew discovering her, believing in her, and being an advocate and encouragement. I had a similar experience.I vividly remember meeting Andrew at a 'Cocktails and Conversations' event put on by the station many years ago. He had just recently moved here and took over as program director for KTLK. Sue Jeffers introduced me to him and, with her trademark conviction, insisted that I should be on the radio. Andrew gave me this look which I would come to recognize as I saw it many times -- thinly veiled skepticism. He had clearly been presented with many such prospects, and found most wanting. I, like everyone in his orbit, would have to prove myself. But once you did, once you showed him that you had something to offer, once he believed in you, there was no stronger advocate.'Closing Argument with Walter Hudson' happened entirely because of Andrew. When a late evening slot opened up in the broadcast schedule, it could have easily been plugged with syndication. Such is the trajectory of the industry. Local radio is a risk. Syndication makes good business sense. But Drew wouldn't have it. He wanted a local voice on the airwaves. And he fought to bring me in as that voice. It's not something I would have pursued and obtained without him taking the initiative to reach out, offer, and encourage me. And that type of thing almost never happens. It's like a made-up story, where the wise seasoned mentor appears to call a reluctant charge. My ship came in - not ladden with riches, but set on adventure. And Drew Lee was its captain. My heart goes out to his family and friends, Sam and Jon Justice in particular. Knowing how I feel, I can't imagine what they're going through. I pray for comfort and eventual peace, for gratitude and celebration of life. Drew Lee was everything this world needs more of. We're less without him.

Two men are basically credited with the beginning of "Top 40" radio. One came up with the format, and the other branded it. Find out who did what, in Episode #13. And we have a great aircheck from 1974 -- KTLK in Denver. Wow, this guy "Big Ron O'Brien" is fantastic. Lots of energy -- typical of top 40 stations.

www.commsolutionsmn.com- We made it to 100 episodes! To celebrate, we’re bringing in local talk radio and podcasting legend and firebrand, Bob Davis. He is the host of the Bob Davis Podcasts, with a history in radio, including hosting a show with Rep Tom Emmer on KTLK. We have Bob on the podcast to discuss the history of broadcasting, why podcasting is killing radio, and what the future of broadcasting looks like. We also discuss what makes a good podcast, and why it is so important to tell your local story. Bob tells how he was challenging one of the top morning shows in the country in market share, and how the network screwed it up. In fact, we go on to lay out pretty much everything that is wrong with modern day broadcasting. This interview is irreverent and full of laughs, but it is what you expect of us… it’s full of truth. We don’t know how to do this any other way, so we’re jumping into this one with both feet. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? At the beginning of each episode Jason quotes some song lyrics that have to do with the subject matter of the podcast. Andrew never knows what they are, but now he can… and so can you! We’ve launched the Spotify playlist: “Community Solutions Music From the Podcast!” You can listen to Roundabout from Yes after listing to Episode 30 on Roundabouts… or kick back and enjoy a rocking playlist just for the thrill of it. We add a new song every week. Subscribe and enjoy! Don’t forget that you can also subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify, or go out to the PodBabble Podcast Network!
Jason joins the KTLK morning show to talk about actually taking a stand on things.

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed on "Howling at the Moon" with Dr. Toni Cook, on June 17, 2000, on KTLK radio in Denver, CO. The host was doctor, a woman, and a pastor of a liberal church. Many excellent questions about the Scriptural proofs of Christian Polygamy were asked and answered, even as the host very clearly self-identified as a liberal version. The standard of "love-not-force" was also given in-depth, explaining the call for husbands to grow up to love wives as truly selflessly as Christ loves the churches. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 102, from August 2012. Jason Hartman interviews returning guest, Devin Foley on the subject of environment versus ecology and the ideology versus reality behind the environmental movement. The term “environmentalism” is a popular word today with a broad meaning. There are many components to environmentalism, such as conservation, ecology, human impact on nature, and maybe lesser known, a philosophical/spiritual component. Devin and Jason talk about the impact large corporations have on the environment, how competition from the little guys cleaning up their waste have pushed corporations to take care of their own pollutants, lack of enforcement of regulations by the government, and the top-down, often selective, bureaucratic management of the EPA. Devin points out that our air is much cleaner today than it would have been in the 1800s and earlier, when nearly every household was burning wood, and later coal, to heat and cook. Advanced technology today has changed things for the better, even though there is still a high level of concern. Jason and Devin also talk about the philosophy of deep ecology and extreme environmentalists that consider humans to be the problem and what these groups are really implying. Devin is co-founder and president of Intellectual Takeout. In his role, he oversees content development and marketing, works with academics and experts to assure quality, and publicly promotes the site. Prior to co-founding Intellectual Takeout, Devin served as the Director of Development at the Center of the American Experiment, a state-based think tank in Minnesota, where he was responsible for meeting a $1 million annual budget. He has roughly eight years of fundraising and policy experience working for candidates and non-profit organizations. Additionally, he has been on 100.3 KTLK as well as Talk of the Nation on NPR and was named a 2011 Young Leader by the American Swiss Foundation. Devin studied history and political science at Hillsdale College in Michigan. There he met his lovely wife; together they have three kids and live in Stillwater, Minnesota. Devin enjoys fast cars, long drives, great books, old planes, and nearly everything life throws his way. Website: www.IntellectualTakeout.org

A lot of people compare today's economy in the U.S. with the Great Depression. High unemployment figures that seem to be unrelenting, deflation and inflation, and various bubbles provide some interesting similarities. Jason Hartman and returning guest, Devin Foley compare the historical events with today's events, including government policies and programs designed to prop up the markets and ideally create jobs. Hear more at: www.JasonHartman.com. As Devin points out, based on historical and present figures, the programs and wars that the government implies will help the economy do not in actuality pull us out of recession or depression. He also talks about other common myths about market corrections and other attempts to right the economy. Devin stresses that economic freedom rather than government interventions, while requiring an adjustment period initially, would ultimately result in recovery, with more realistic prices and a sustainable economy. “When government is taking big steps and big actions and getting very involved in people's lives based on how people are voting,” warns Devin, “that's a dangerous proposition to get into. That's not something that's going to lead to long-term stability.” Devin and Jason also talk about solutions to the U.S.'s current predicament. Devin is co-founder and president of Intellectual Takeout (www.IntellectualTakeout.org ).
