Your dedication allows us to continue bringing insightful conversations with some of the best in the writing world! For those who missed it, we had an incredible chat with Angela Yuriko Smith—an award-winning poet, author, publisher, and mentor—who shared invaluable insights into her writing journey and the importance of community within the literary world. Angela's career is an inspiring one, and it was a privilege to hear her discuss her path, from discovering her love for writing as a child to becoming a two-time Bram Stoker Awards® winner and a respected mentor in the Horror Writers Association (HWA).Key Takeaways from Angela's Journey:Angela emphasized the importance of authenticity in writing, encouraging writers to be true to themselves and find their unique voice. She reflected on how her passion for writing has always been deeply personal, starting from her childhood and evolving as she found her niche in speculative fiction and horror. Her advice? Find what resonates with you and lean into it—that's how you create stories that feel alive and connect with readers. We also discussed Angela's role as a mentor. Through her work with the HWA, she's dedicated to helping emerging writers overcome the challenges of the industry. For Angela, building a supportive community is crucial to success, as it empowers writers to grow and thrive. She reminded us that writing can be a solitary pursuit, but it doesn't have to be a lonely one when you have a strong network of fellow creatives.A Closer Look at How to Laika Dog:One of the most moving parts of the interview was our conversation about her latest book, How to Laika Dog: One Night Family. Part of her How to Fix This series, this installment tells the emotional story of Laika, the stray dog sent into space on a one-way mission aboard Sputnik 1. Angela beautifully captures Laika's final moments with a family before embarking on her tragic mission, blending historical fact with deep emotional resonance.Angela shared how How to Laika Dog fits into her series of cautionary tales, with each book offering a powerful message wrapped in speculative storytelling. Laika's story, in particular, touches on themes of sacrifice, empathy, and the far-reaching consequences of human decisions. It's a testament to Angela's ability to take real-world events and weave them into compelling, reflective fiction.Looking Ahead: Upcoming Projects and More.Angela also gave us an exciting glimpse into her future projects! She has more cautionary tales in the works, continuing her exploration of human nature, history, and the supernatural. Her involvement with the Horror Writers Association remains a big focus, where she continues to uplift the horror genre and mentor the next generation of writers.A Final Word on the Power of Writing:Throughout the interview, Angela emphasized that writing is not just about telling stories—it's about leveraging your words for a desired outcome. About Lisa Vasquez Lisa Vasquez, (known by her readers and fans as the Unsaintly Queen) creates vivid, twisted horror with the precision of a scalpel, and cuts into the reader's psyche with fleshed out characters. Vasquez is a mentor for the HWA, is head of Stitched Smile Publications, and retired editor-in-chief of the company's quarterly publication, House of Stitched Magazine. Vasquez now focuses on her own stories which range from slow and subtle gothic horror, to the more extreme sub-genres of horror. Her writing style has been compared to the works of Mary Shelley, Baz Luhrman, and the Grand Guignol (John Palisano, Bram Stoker-winning author of NERVES), and is hailed as, "A writer of nightmarish vision and a new, poetic voice in today's horror genre" (Peter Molnar, author of THE CLOCKWORK LAZARUS). A native Chicagoan who spent half her life on the city's south side, she now lives in Houston, Texas, fighting off mosquitos large enough to carry off small children, and avoiding direct sunlight.  It's an all too familiar scenario to foresters…a new pest is introduced into another part of the range and slowly works its way to a forest near you. So it goes with the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) that was introduced into eastern North America over 70 years ago. HWA has not yet arrived in Wisconsin, but can we learn from the research and field experience of our colleagues in the east? Are there silvicultural approaches that can be used to make hemlock trees and stands more resilient, along with other integrated pest management approaches? Join author and host Thersa Matsuura on a fascinating journey into the world of Japanese spirits, monsters, and yokai. This episode delves into how these supernatural beings are deeply embedded in Japanese culture, art, and storytelling. Discover the eerie yet captivating tales that have inspired countless sculptures, paintings, and modern media. Thersa will also explore intriguing similarities and differences between Japanese and Western supernatural traditions. Tune in for an enlightening discussion that bridges cultural divides and brings ancient myths to life. Perfect for enthusiasts of folklore, art, and the mysterious realms of the supernatural. My Special Guest Is Thersa Matsuura After a childhood living all over the U.S. — as far north as Fairbanks, Alaska and as far south as Jacksonville, Florida, Thersa Matsuura settled down in the far, far east. She's now an American expat who has lived over half her life in a fishing town in Japan. Her fluency in Japanese allows her to do research into parts of the culture – legends, folktales, and superstitions – that are little known to western audiences. A lot of what she digs up informs her short stories or becomes fodder for her podcast: Uncanny Japan. Thersa is a graduate of Clarion West (2015), a recipient of HWA's Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship, and the author of two collections, A Robe of Feathers and Other Stories (Counterpoint LLC, 2009) and The Carp-Faced Boy and Other Tales (Independent Regions Publishing, 2017). The latter was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award® (2017). She's had stories published in various magazines, anthologies and serialised in the Asahi English Newspaper. Her most recent book is The Book of Japanese Folklore: An Encyclopedia of the Spirits, Monsters, and Yokai of Japanese Myth (Spring, 2024; Adams Media). In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Explore concepts of Japanese Spirits, Monsters and Yokai. 2. Explore how embedded supernatural belief and spirits exist in Japanese culture, art, ritual and life. 3. Discover examples of Japanese spirits and how these can be similar and different to examples in the West. As an actor, Matthew Ewald's extensive experience and career in the industry began in 2001 when he completed not only his first feature film “Terminal Error,” but in the same year was fortunate enough to have portrayed Nicholas Bluetooth on the highly popular FOX science fiction/adventure television series “Galidor.” The franchise, an international hit, spawned Matthew his own action figure, as well as merchandising rights through Cap'N'Crunch cereal, McDonalds Happy Meal Toys, XBOX and Playstation video game consoles, among many others.  He has wrapped production on over sixty-plus films, including one of the lead roles—as the villainous Mallock—in the pilot “Trancers Paradox,” as well as a guest-starring role in “Humber City.”  He was a part of the highly acclaimed video game web-series “Mario Warfare,” as well as the episode “Lolani” for the equally acclaimed “Star Trek: Continues.” He has also had the great honor to have filmed the serious-minded remake of the 1959 classic Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s magnum opus, “Plan 9 From Outer Space.” Matthew has also won the prestigious Macabre Faire Film Festival's Best Actor in a Feature Film award for his role as Carl in the motion picture “Athena.” As a writer, Matthew is a published author with a number of horror stories already to his credit (three of which he had been asked to adapt into audio productions).  He is a member of the HWA.  Human Nature marked his debut novel.  His follow-up novel, Whispers in the Cries, is his masterpiece of the genre combining frightening ghost story themes before a backdrop of events surrounding the RMS Queen Mary.  The Coffin Clock is his most heartfelt novel, of high adventure, ghost pirates, and family bonding.

Shortly after the founder of the Worldwide Church of God, Herbert W. Armstrong died in 1986, the organization, under the new leadership of Joseph Tkach, Sr., began a remarkable transformation. They slowly jettisoned the cultic and erroneous doctrines of Armstrong and began reexamining the nature of God. By so doing, they began doing away with false doctrine and legalistic restrictions. Eventually they replaced the unique doctrines of "Armstrongism" with traditional Christian beliefs including the Trinity doctrine and salvation by grace through faith alone. Subsequently, under the leadership of Joseph Tkach, Jr. the church joined the National Association of Evangelicals and changed their name to Grace Communion International. On part two of president of Watchman Fellowship James Walker's discussion with former Worldwide Church of God member Mark Tabladillo, you will hear more of the details of Mark's story as he witnessed firsthand some of the unprecedented changes to the organization during his membership.Related Links: Book, Transformed by Truth, by Joseph Tkach, Jr., Pastor General of the Worldwide Church of God (now Grace Communion International): https://uhop.me/Tkach Video, Called to Be Free, a documentary addressing the transformation of the Worldwide Church of God  (YouTube; 74-min.): https://youtu.be/LWAtvE1xiRk Ministry website of Mark Tabladillo: MarkTab.org Related Profiles Watchman Fellowship's Armstrongism Profile by Phillip Arnn: watchman.org/Armstrongism Watchman Fellowship's Philadelphia Church of God Profile by Tim Martin: watchman.org/PCG Watchman Fellowship's Patterns in the Cults Profile by James Walker: watchman.org/Patterns Additional ResourcesFREE: We are also offering a subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/Free.PROFILE NOTEBOOK: Order the complete collection of Watchman Fellowship Profiles (over 600 pages -- from Astrology to Zen Buddhism) in either printed or PDF formats here: watchman.org/notebook. *"Enter freely and of your own will!” Alex and Chris hang out with punk horror author Carol Gyzander, and catch up with her many exciting projects. From writing to editing multiple short horror fiction, to scaring us with podcast readings and more, for the rest of the summer, Carol really has it going on! (See below.) It's how-to-and-why-to fascinating conversation with a fascinating person. 1) Forget Me Not is a cryptid novella, published by Systema Paradoxa as part of their series. Each is a stand alone story about a different, somewhat obscure cryptid. Mine is about Bessie, the Lake Erie monster, Basically the story of teenage twins in 1969 Niagara Falls area and their connection to family in 1939 regarding something in the water... more info in the blurb at the Zon: 2) Even in the Grave is a ghost story anthology that I co-edited with James Chambers. Different locations and time periods, but all are ghost stories! One thing to know -- while many of our friends from HWA NY Chapter are in the anthology, it is in no way an official HWA publication and we should not mention it as such. Basically we just asked our friends to submit stories. 3) NEWEST! Short story "Freshest Catch" in Weird House Magazine Issue 1. Something fishy at the fish market on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. 4) COMING SOON! A Woman Unbecoming - a fast-turnaround charity anthology co-edited with Rachel A Brune of Crone Girls Press to benefit reproductive health services. A horror anthology focusing on the theme of righteous rage, anger, and vengeance. Releases August 23. Have questions or comments for us? Post them in the comments section below or ... Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- My name is Chris Herron, and I narrate audiobooks. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. They say the strongest form of advertisement is word of mouth, so I provide a video to a platform of readers to help get people talking. Help them spread the word.
