Todo el mundo sabe que los dinosaurios desaparecieron de la Tierra hace 66 millones de años porque chocó con nuestro planeta un gran asteroide o cometa, ¿verdad? Bueno, ésa ha sido una afirmación aceptada por muchos, pero también disputada por otros, a lo largo de los últimos 35 años. Es cierto que hubo un gran impacto hace 66 millones de años, y que coincidió con la desaparición de los dinosaurios (excepto las aves), pero también es cierto que ese periodo coincidió con una época de potente vulcanismo que pudo "envenenar a fuego lento" a los dinosaurios. ¿Fue el meteorito la causa principal de la extinción o fue sólo un último acto, uno especialmente espectacular, dentro de una tragedia más larga? Este debate se ha mantenido abierto desde el descubrimiento del cráter de Chicxulub a principios de la década de 1990, pero parece que está zanjándose en los últimos años gracias a una serie de descubrimientos en estratos muy cercanos al momento de la extinción. Hoy os presentamos el último de esos estudios, en el que los paleontólogos logran reconstruir los ecosistemas del sur de los Estados Unidos en los miles de años previos a la extinción. En él descubren que los dinosaurios parecían estar en buen estado de salud, lo cual apoyaría la idea de que el meteorito fue fundamental para su extinción. Hablamos de todo ello con uno de los autores del artículo: Jorge García Girón, que es ecólogo y profesor en la Universidad de León. Para empezar, construir cualquier cosa en el espacio es extremadamente difícil, incluso algo pequeñito; además, la Tierra nos protege de forma natural contra amenazas físicas, como las partículas de alta energía que surcan el espacio exterior, o químicas, como las atmósferas y los polvos tóxicos que encontramos en otros mundos conocidos. Concluimos nuestra serie sobre los premios Nobel de ciencias de este año con el galardón de Química, que ha sido para el japonés Susumu Kitagawa, el británico Richard Robson y el jordano Omar Yaghi, “por el desarrollo de las armazones metal-orgánicas”. Se trata de "redes de pesca" de tamaño molecular que tratan de aprovechar las tremendas capacidades de los metales para interaccionar con otras moléculas. En una pieza de metal al uso los átomos de metal están "demasiado juntos", y se estorban a la hora de hacer química: sólo los átomos de la superficie pueden interaccionar con el exterior, e incluso ésos se van a molestar entre sí. Los premiados de este año ebcontraron la solución ideal: separar los metales entre sí mediante moléculas orgánicas flexibles, dando lugar a una especie de "andamio orgánico" en el que los átomos de metal están colgados. A estas estructuras las llamamos armazones metal-orgánicas o MOFs, por sus siglas en inglés. No habíamos hablado previamente de los MOFs en La Brújula, pero sí hemos hablado de unas estructuras que tienen propiedades similares: las zeolitas. Si los MOFs tienen un andamiaje orgánico, las zeolitas lo tienen de óxido de silicio y de aluminio, pero la idea es similar: construir una estructura tridimensional en la que poder "colgar" moléculas químicamente activas para potenciar su actividad. Buena parte de las lógicas que se aplican a las zeolitas valen también para los MOFs, así que si queréis aprender más sobre el asunto os recomiendo que repaséis los episodios s03e34, s04e23 y s11e11. Hoy analizamos el Nobel de Física 2025, que ha sido para el británico John Clarke, el francés Michel Devoret y el estadounidense John Martinis “por el descubrimiento del efecto túnel macroscópico y la cuantización en un circuito eléctrico”. Este premio tiene dos vertientes: por un lado la básica, que consiste en que los premiados fueron los primeros en demostrar que las propiedades cuánticas no estaban restringidas al mundo microscópico. Gracias a sus experimentos con circuitos superconductores pudimos comprobar que los peculiares comportamientos cuánticos pueden aparecer también en objetos "grandes"; sus circuitos, en efecto, medían alrededor de un centímetro. En este sentido, los circuitos con que trabajaron los premiados son "gatos de Schrödinger": sistemas macroscópicos que manifiestan propiedades cuánticas. Por otro lado está la vertiente tecnológica: estos circuitos superconductores son la base de muchos de los ordenadores cuánticos que están empezando a investigarse industrialmente. Empresas como Google, IBM o Microsoft trabajan ya con prototipos basados en estas piezas de hardware, y con ellos se ha demostrado que la computación cuántica es una realidad. Incipiente, embrionaria, pero realidad. Si os interesan estos asuntos hay mucho material al que os podéis dirigir en la hemeroteca de este pódcast.
