Inicialmente pensado para ser construido en la cima del volcán Mauna Kea, en Hawái, las obras llevan detenidas desde 2015 por la oposición de indígenas hawaianos, grupos ecologistas y nacionalistas de las islas. A esto se ha sumado la llegada de la administración Trump, que pretende hacer severos recortes en su presupuesto de ciencia y anunció hace dos meses que renunciaba a financiar la construcción del Telescopio de Treinta Metros. Ante esta situación es perfectamente factible que el proyecto haya de abandonarse, y el Gobierno de España se ha manifestado públicamente para tratar de ocupar ese vacío. En el programa de hoy os contamos los detalles de esta rocambolesca historia y analizamos qué posibilidades tiene España de llevarse el gato al agua y que uno de los artefactos científicos más importantes del siglo termine en suelo español. Tras el terremoto producido esta madrugada en la costa este de Rusia, el miedo se ha extendido y las alarmas por posible tsunami se han desplegado en varios países. Con olas de 4 metros en la región rusa y una magnitud de 8,8 es el terremoto más grande de los últimos 14 años. Las autoridades japonesas han pedido a la población que esperen en zonas elevadas y ha habido evacuaciones también en Rusia y Hawái. En nuestro país, el Supremo ha confirmado que el fiscal general será juzgado por posible revelación de secretos en el caso del novio de Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

çUn terremoto de gran magnitud con epicentro en la península rusa de Kamchatka ha sacudido el Pacífico, activando la alerta por tsunami en varios países, entre ellos Chile, China, Japón y Estados Unidos. El seísmo, que ya figura entre los diez más potentes de la historia reciente, ha encendido todas las alarmas.A las 8:25 de la mañana (hora local), las primeras olas del tsunami comenzaron a impactar en las costas de Hawái, donde las autoridades ordenaron evacuaciones urgentes. En medio del caos, conocemos la historia de Laura Hostetler, una alicantina casada con un marine estadounidense, que tuvo que huir con lo justo: una lata de ravioli, las joyas de su abuela y sin apenas agua. Tras dos horas y media atrapada en un atasco, logró llegar a la base militar donde se encontraba su marido. El publicista Ferrán Salas nos atiende desde Kioto. Al oeste del país, eina la calma, aunque hay avisos de modificaciones en los horarios de algunos trenes, apunta. Betelgeuse revela su estrella compañera gracias a Gemini North, un hallazgo que cambiará nuestra mirada estelar Por Félix Riaño @LocutorcoBetelgeuse, el punto rojizo que marca el hombro de Orión, está a unos 650 años luz —aproximadamente 6,1 cuatrillones de kilómetros— de la Tierra. Hoy vamos a contar que no brilla sola: el telescopio Gemini North en Hawái captó, mediante imágenes rápidas de «tavelas» o speckle imaging, una diminuta estrella azul-blanca orbitando dentro de la atmósfera hinchada de la supergigante roja. La compañera es seis veces menos luminosa, posee una masa de 1,5 Soles y recorre una órbita de apenas 4 Unidades Astronómicas, unos 600 millones de kilómetros, distancia tan corta que cabría holgadamente dentro de la órbita de Júpiter. Este descubrimiento resuelve un enigma de siglos sobre las variaciones de brillo de Betelgeuse y plantea una nueva duda fascinante: ¿qué sucederá con esa pequeña estrella cuando el gigante rojo explote en una futura supernova visible a plena vista? Pero el pequeño vecino podría desaparecer mucho antes del estallido  La aventura empezó con un misterio de luz. Desde la Antigua Grecia, astrónomos aficionados notaron que Betelgeuse late: se oscurece y se ilumina en ciclos de 400 días y, aparte, en ciclos de casi seis años. Esa segunda cadencia despertó la sospecha de que algo orbitaba al gigante. Intentos anteriores con el Hubble y el observatorio de rayos X Chandra no dieron pistas. Entonces, Steve Howell y su equipo de la NASA decidieron usar Alopeke, un instrumento que toma miles de fotos de un cuarto de milisegundo y las combina para “congelar” las turbulencias del aire. Así apareció un puntito azul, tan tenue que muchos no lo habrían creído real de no ser por la nítida separación angular de apenas 0,05 segundos de arco, similar a distinguir dos fuegos artificiales separados por la anchura de una moneda vista a 40 kilómetros.   Ahora surge un problema apasionante. La compañera, batizada de forma provisional «Siwarha», viaja inmersa en las capas externas de Betelgeuse, hechas de gas caliente y polvo. Esa proximidad genera fricción estelar: el gas de la supergigante frena la órbita del astro menor, igual que el aire frena a un ciclista. Los cálculos indican que la órbita de Siwarha va a decaer y la estrella podría caer en espiral hasta quedar engullida en menos de diez mil años, un suspiro cósmico. Además, cada vuelta de esta bailarina estelar revuelve las capas del gigante, expulsando más polvo al espacio y dándonos falsas alarmas de supernova, como el Gran Atenuamiento de 2019 a 2020. Observar ese proceso es complicado porque el resplandor anaranjado de Betelgeuse satura detectores y tapa el brillo azulado de su vecina; solo técnicas de alta resolución permiten separar ambas luces sin deformar la imagen.   ¿Qué vamos a aprender después? Primero, los astrónomos planean vigilar la pareja hasta noviembre de 2027, cuando la órbita la aleje un poco más y facilite mediciones precisas de masa, temperatura y composición. Con esos datos vamos a refinar modelos de evolución estelar: Betelgeuse, con un radio de unos 487 millones de kilómetros —casi la distancia entre el Sol y el cinturón de asteroides— se encuentra en fase final de vida y terminará reventando en una supernova que iluminará nuestros cielos tanto como la Luna durante varios meses. Siwarha servirá como “termómetro” interno, midiendo la pérdida de masa del gigante y avisando de cambios bruscos. Además, el hallazgo abre la puerta a buscar compañeros en otras supergigantes, lo que podría explicar irregularidades luminosas en estrellas cercanas como Antares. Finalmente, cuando Betelgeuse explote, parte de su material va a caer sobre Siwarha, quizás formando un disco de gas brillante que, por unos años, adornará la constelación de Orión como un brazalete cósmico fácilmente visible con pequeños telescopios.   Betelgeuse es joven para su tamaño: apenas 10 millones de años frente a los 4 600 millones del Sol. Ese ritmo acelerado de vida se debe a su masa: unas 20 veces la solar. Cuando una estrella tan grande agota el hidrógeno central, se expande, enfría la superficie y adopta el tono rojizo característico. En 2019, su brillantez cayó un 40 %, dando pábulo a titulares sobre una “supernova inminente”. Más tarde, estudios con el Very Large Telescope mostraron un penacho de polvo expulsado desde su hemisferio sur, mezcla de cenizas estelares y silicatos. Casos parecidos ocurrieron con la supergigante VY Canis Majoris, lo que sugiere que estos eventos de “tos estelar” son habituales en gigantes en decadencia. La confirmación de Siwarha aclara la oscilación de seis años: cada vez que la compañera se adentra en las zonas más densas de la atmósfera, arrastra gas y lo expulsa como si agitara un velo de nubes. Gracias a este sistema doble, la próxima generación de telescopios —James Webb, ELT y el propio Gemini tras su actualización— va a probar modelos de hidrodinámica estelar en tiempo real, convirtiendo a Betelgeuse en el laboratorio natural más cercano para estudiar las últimas fases de las estrellas masivas.   Betelgeuse ya no es la solitaria del vecindario cósmico: su compañera Siwarha confirma teorías centenarias y nos brinda una oportunidad única para observar cómo un gigante rojo evoluciona con un aliado tan cercano. Eclesiastés 11: 4, NBVBetsy Ross pasó a la historia por haber diseñado la primera bandera de los Estados Unidos, la cual tenía franjas rojas y blancas y un cuadro azul con trece estrellas, representando a las primeras trece colonias. Sin embargo, la bandera diseñada por Ross no es la que actualmente utiliza el país norteamericano. La bandera moderna, con cincuenta estrellas, fue diseñada por un estudiante de secundaria llamado Robert G. Heft.La historia relata que en marzo de 1959, el profesor Stanley Pratt solicitó a sus estudiantes que crearan un proyecto que reflejara su amor por la historia de Estados Unidos. Robert notó que la bandera del país tenía 48 estrellas, a pesar de que Alaska ya había sido aceptado como el estado número 49 y Hawái estaba en proceso de convertirse en el quincuagésimo estado. Por lo tanto, confeccionó una bandera y la presentó como su proyecto.A pesar de sus esfuerzos, el maestro no quedó impresionado y le otorgó una calificación de «B menos». Ante la protesta de Robert, el Sr. Pratt le dijo: «Si el Congreso aprueba tu diseño, cambiaré tu calificación». Sin perder tiempo, Robert contactó al gobernador de su estado, Ohio, y a su representante local en el Congreso, regalándoles la bandera que había diseñado. También se dice que escribió más de veinte cartas a la Casa Blanca hasta que recibió una llamada del presidente Eisenhower, quien confirmó que su diseño había sido aceptado y se estrenaría el 4 de julio de 1960.Robert Heft es un encomiable ejemplo de lo que significa ser proactivo. Él no se sentó a esperar a que el congreso tomara una decisión, sino que tomó la iniciativa y procuró alcanzar su meta. Salomón escribió el versículo de hoy justo para motivarnos a la acción, para que seamos jóvenes proactivos: «El que mira al viento, no siembra, y el que mira a las nubes, no cosecha».Hay personas que constantemente posponen sus proyectos y ambiciones y no asumen riesgos, sufren de parálisis por análisis mientras esperan el «clima perfecto». El Predicador sabía que nunca podremos tenerlo todo bajo control, ya que no podemos prever todas las circunstancias. Por eso, inspirado por Dios, nos impulsa hoy a embarcarnos en nuevas metas sin dejarnos paralizar por el miedo. ¿Estás dispuesto a ser ese tipo de persona? 

Mayo es el mes de la Herencia Asiática-Estadounidense, Nativos de Hawái y de las Islas del Pacífico, el cual está dedicado a celebrar los logros y las contribuciones de los asiáticos, nativos de Hawái y los isleños del Pacífico de los Estados Unidos. Esta conmemoración, que se originó después de la acción del Congreso de EE. UU. en 1997, sirve para resaltar la magnitud de las comunidades asiáticas, nativas hawaianas e isleñas del Pacífico, la cual abarca más de 30 países donde se hablan más de 100 idiomas diferentes y donde las experiencias son igualmente variadas. Durante el mes de mayo e integrado al currículo durante todo el año escolar, celebramos a esta comunidad intencionalmente y honramos sus dones, culturas, historias diversas y contribuciones continuas al Distrito Escolar de Hillsboro y nuestra nación. En nuestras escuelas y salones de clase, dedicamos tiempo a explorar la valiosa historia y cultura de las personas pertenecientes a esta comunidad. Seguimos impartiendo instrucción, aprendiendo y desaprendiendo, reflexionando e incluso condenando la violencia y el odio que se ha dirigido hacia ellos. Trabajamos para reconstruir nuestras comunidades en los salones de clase a medida que elevamos las historias, las contribuciones y las experiencias de estas comunidades con aprecio, empatía e inclusión.Gracias a nuestros estudiantes, personal, familias y miembros de la comunidad asiático-estadounidenses, nativos de Hawái e isleños del Pacífico del Distrito Escolar de Hillsboro que continúan uniéndose a nosotros en los esfuerzos para construir y mantener una cultura de pertenencia. Rocket League es un videojuego de deportes en línea en el que equipos de todo Estados Unidos compiten por puntos y premios. El sábado, 12 de abril, compitieron en el Bruin Rocket League Invitational celebrado en George Fox University. El torneo contó con cuatro equipos importantes: Ridgefield, North Eugene, Wilsonville y nuestros propios Spartans. Con Wilsonville y Hilhi ampliamente considerados como los dos mejores equipos del estado, el escenario estaba listo para un enfrentamiento intenso. La competencia comenzó con una fase de grupos (el mejor de tres), donde los Spartans obtuvieron el segundo puesto clasificatorio de cara a la fase eliminatoria, perdiendo solo un partido con un marcador de 1-2 en un ajustado encuentro ante Wilsonville. En la fase eliminatoria, los Spartans comenzaron con fuerza, superando fácilmente las semifinales para ganar una revancha muy esperada contra Wilsonville en la final. Esta vez, Hilhi llegó preparado. Los Spartans marcaron la pauta desde el inicio, ganando el primer partido y nunca miraron atrás. Con un trabajo en equipo dominante, una comunicación clara y jugadas clave, Hilhi derrotó a Wilsonville 4-0 en una serie del mejor de siete para reclamar el título del campeonato. La celebración del 169 aniversario de la Batalla de Rivas nos recuerda la gesta de nuestros héroes Juan Rafael Mora Porras, al mando del ejército nacional y Juan Santamaría, emblemático representante de nuestros soldados, quienes garantizaron la independencia y estabilidad de Centro América y de nuestra Nación. Es también el marco ideal para poner en perspectiva, con claves de hoy, la doctrina del Destino Manifiesto, muy popular en el siglo XIX, para justificar la expansión territorial de Estados Unidos primero con las adquisiciones territoriales de California y Nuevo México (1846-1848) y luego con el avance de los filibusteros más allá de esas fronteras. Vendría así la compra de Alaska y la conquista de Hawái. Posteriormente, ese expansionismo se transforma en la política de “poder suave”, mediante la cooperación y la globalización: las corporaciones de todo tipo, la cultura Hollywoodense y los acuerdos comerciales, entre otros, usando como bandera la defensa de valores universales; la democracia en primer plano. Situados en el año 2025 la narrativa de Donald Trump nos ubica en el expansionismo puro y duro al pretender anexionar Groenlandia, recuperar el canal de Panamá (en las últimas horas con el anuncio del traslado de tropas) y convertir a Canadá en un estado más de los Estados Unidos. Ampliando el foco, sumamos la competencia geopolítica por su rivalidad con China, la guerra de aranceles para castigar al mundo y la lucha por recursos estratégicos como el agua y los minerales de tierras raras. La reinterpretación de Trump del Destino Manifiesto no es una mera nostalgia, sino una herramienta retórica para legitimar un proyecto político que combina nacionalismo identitario, proteccionismo y expansionismo. Para conversar sobre esta continuidad de la política estadounidense nos acompaña el exministro, exembajador y presidente emérito de la Academia Morista Costarricense, Armando Vargas Araya.

Aida Moreno Blasco y Pablo Mestre Segarra emprendieron una vuelta al mundo en pareja desde el 10 de enero hasta el 22 de diciembre de 2023. Durante esos 348 días, recorrieron 15 países y 4 continentes utilizando principalmente el autobús como medio de transporte. Este viaje, sencillo y austero, fue financiado íntegramente con sus ahorros y sin ingresos durante ese periodo. En la ruta atravesaron Sudamérica de sur a norte, exploraron islas remotas como Hawái, recorrieron Australia y se adentraron en Asia hasta llegar al Himalaya y la India. Al final, este viaje representó un año de superación personal, de enfrentarse a sus miedos y de vivir viajando, una experiencia muy diferente de la idea habitual de simplemente viajar.
