Broadway may be where Nashville turns the volume up, but The Gulch is where the city sharpens its edges. In this episode of Retire Southern, James Lewis sits down with the team behind one of Nashville's most compelling hospitality experiences: Executive Chef Brack May, Beverage Director Todd Johnston, and Executive Pastry Chef Natalie Moorer of The Thompson Nashville. From oysters sliding across the raw bar at Marsh House to espresso martinis climbing toward the rooftop at L.A. Jackson, this conversation explores what actually makes a hotel feel alive. Not just the food. Not just the cocktails. The feeling. Together, the group dives into: The ecosystem philosophy behind modern hospitality Seafood sourcing, raw bar culture, and caviar service at Marsh House Soft-shell crab yaka mein and elevated Southern seafood The rise of espresso martinis and rooftop culture at L.A. Jackson Building a pastry program that feels refined yet approachable Why locals genuinely spend time at The Thompson The team's version of the perfect Nashville weekend What Southern hospitality looks like when it is done correctly Chef Brack brings decades of experience from San Francisco to New Orleans, shaping Marsh House into one of Nashville's defining seafood destinations with an approach rooted in authenticity over performance. Todd has helped build both Marsh House and L.A. Jackson since opening day in 2016, creating spaces that feel elevated without ever becoming pretentious. And Chef Natalie quietly ties the entire experience together through desserts, pastries, brunch, and small details that guests remember long after checkout. What emerges is a conversation about hospitality, energy, rhythm, and the kind of places people return to because of how they feel when they are there. The Thompson Nashville is not trying to compete with Broadway. It is offering a different frequency altogether. A little calmer. A little sharper. A little more intentional. Read. Watch. Listen. Rooted in the South. Driven by Purpose. Built for Living.

Stacy isn't the only one that lives far away, it turns out there's DAMTT listeners all over the country (and world)! But how many of them have experienced Buc-ee's? Stacy and her husband made the pilgrimage and as promised, it's a lot, from “Beaver Chips” to brisket and bathing suits, Buc-ee's delivers. Eric had a less in-your-face time celebrating St. Patrick's Day with tea brack and colcannon. He also has FSA money to spend so let the loophole search on how to spend it best begin. Eric's Cultural Blindspot of the week is on the AFI 100 list, Modern Times with Charlie Chaplin. It was a movie square on the fence between the silent era and “talkies” about finding and keeping a job in the face of modern times. Also starring Paulette Goddard, Eric was surprised to find he enjoyed it so much and saw the seeds of many comedy bits like I Love Lucy's chocolate factory episode. Stacy watched KPop Demon Hunters which she was also surprised to enjoy since she's not into K-pop or manufactured bands. Her takeaway was its good for children AND your inner child. As for nicknames, Ric-y Radio/E/Eric has none while Beans/Stacky/Fire Face/Stacy has plenty to go by and give! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 12, 2026 is: brackish BRACK-ish adjective Brackish, meaning “somewhat salty,” usually describes water or bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, and estuaries. The word can also mean “not appealing to the taste” or “repulsive.” // The river becomes brackish as we approach the tidemark. See the entry > Examples: “The blood-testing organs don't measure water levels but rather the concentration of salt, whose healthy range lies at almost exactly the same concentration as that of the brackish intertidal water in which vertebrates first evolved (which is about one-third as salty as seawater).” — Dan Samorodnitsky, Wired, 28 Sept. 2025 Did you know? When the word brackish first appeared in English in the 1500s, it simply meant “salty,” as did its Dutch parent brac. Then, as now, brackish was used to describe water that was a mixture of saltwater and freshwater, such as one encounters where a river meets the sea. Since that time, however, brackish has developed the additional meanings of “unpalatable” and “repulsive,” presumably because of the oozy, mucky, and sometimes stinky (or stinkyish, if you prefer)—not just salty—qualities of coastal estuaries and swamps.

There is a lot of debate surrounding Matthew 16:15-20 and what Jesus was referring to when he said to Peter "on this rock I will build my church." Jonathan and Brandon dive into the text and do some biblical theological digging to offer an explanation and critique some of the commonly held positions on this text. Our annual Indy 500 retro special episode features special guest Kenny Brack, looking back on his landmark 1999 Indy win, 25 years ago. Brack explains how, after failing to get on the F1 grid, he landed in the newly formed Indy Racing League, first with Galles Racing in 1998, and then with Foyt, for whom he won the IRL title and the Indy 500 the following year. He recalls the 1999 race, what it did for his career generally (and in Sweden especially), and also packs in some other key career events like the 2003 Texas crash he was lucky to walk away from, and how his comeback in 2005 was enough for him to call time on his career. That comeback came with Rahal, a team he has joined again as a consultant in 2024 - and he explains that move, too. Ahead of the interview, host Jack Benyon is joined by The Race's Matt Beer, to provide background on the unusual racing landscape in the US at the time of Brack's victory, when top-level single-seater racing was split between the IRL and CART (and top teams like Ganassi and Penske weren't racing at the 500). Jack also speaks to journalist, podcaster and media ace Mattias Persson, a Swede who explains how important Brack's win was for helping the country fall in love with motorsport again after a tough period, and how Brack helped inspired the current crop of Marcus Ericsson and Felix Rosenqvist. That comeback came with Rahal, a team he has joined again as a consultant in 2024 - and he explains that move, too.Ahead of the interview, host Jack Benyon is joined by The Race's Matt Beer, to provide background on the unusual racing landscape in the US at the time of Brack's victory, when top-level single-seater racing was split between the IRL and CART (and top teams like Ganassi and Penske weren't racing at the 500).Jack also speaks to journalist, podcaster and media ace Mattias Persson, a Swede who explains how important Brack's win was for helping the country fall in love with motorsport again after a tough period, and how Brack helped inspired the current crop of Marcus Ericsson and Felix Rosenqvist.Join The Race Members Club for additional podcast content!
