Mosiah 25–28: “They Were Called the People of God”

Saints In the South

From Come Follow Me:      "After nearly three generations of living in separate lands, the Nephites were one people again. Limhi's people, Alma's people, and Mosiah's people—even the people of Zarahemla, who were not descended from Nephi—were now all “numbered with the Nephites” (Mosiah 25:13). Many of them also wanted to become members of the Lord's Church, as Alma's people had. So all those who “were desirous to take upon them the name of Christ” were baptized, “and they were called the people of God” (Mosiah 25:23–24). After years of conflict and captivity, it seemed that the Nephites would finally enjoy a period of peace.      But before long, unbelievers began persecuting the Saints. What made this especially heartbreaking was that many of these unbelievers were the believers' own children—the “rising generation” (Mosiah 26:1), including the sons of Mosiah and one son of Alma. The account tells of a miraculous visit of an angel. But the true miracle of this story is not just about angels appearing to wayward sons. Conversion is a miracle that, in one way or another, needs to happen in all of us."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons  #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the Show.

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [MOSIAH 18-24] Insights“We Have Entered into a Covenant with Him”May 20 - May 26, 2024WEEK 21: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week, we'll study two epic deliverance stories. The people of Alma will find refuge and covenant connection in the Waters of Mormon but stumble into bondage in the land of Helam. Ultimately, they will pray for relief and find it in their day-to-day burdens as well as their miraculous escape. Limhi's people will also suffer through decades of bondage. They'll come to know their need for a deliverer and find it with the help of the Lord. Thanks to ingenuity, faith, and the help of Ammon's band of rescuers, they too will find deliverance in Zarahemla.sage to others and create an epic pivot point in the Book of Mormon.Questions to Consider:Mosiah 19:16-17 | Do you see a link between this type of treatment of women in this week's chapters and the lack of commandment keeping Abinadi spoke about? How does Limhi break this cycle when it comes to the widows?Mosiah 24:8-9 | Why would Amulon delight in the Nephites misery? How do you see the slippery slope of unrighteous dominion impacting Amulon?Mosiah 23:6 & 23:13 | Why does Alma change his perspective when they get to Zarahemla and become King Mosiah's subjects? Does this choice plant seeds for a future reign of judges that Alma and Mosiah 2 will set up together?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:03:54 INSIGHTS CHAPTER SUMMARY00:09:27 SPARK 1: HEART KNITTING 10100:19:28 SPARK 2: BEASTS & BEAUTY00:30:43 SPARK 3: LIMHI'S WHALE00:41:26 QUESTIONS00:46:48 WRAP UPLINKS=====ETSY Printables: https://meckmom.etsy.comWEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. Well now it's been like 80 years and no one has heard from Zeniff's group and Ammon wants to go check on them. When he finds them, they are led by a man name King Limhi and the people are in bondage to the Lamanites. King Limhi found plates in a land of bones. He is happy to learn along Mosiah is a prophet. The children will learn: When I am weak, the Lord can strengthen me. God has given us prophets, seers, and revelators. God helped people in the scriptures, and He can help me. I can face my challenges “in the strength of the Lord.” If you are new here…. Welcome to the Come Follow Me Kids Podcast! This is a scripture study podcast for children. Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [MOSIAH 7-10] Insights“In the Strength of the Lord”May 6 - May 12, 2024WEEK 19: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week's study spans several decades, and we find out what happened to Zeniff's group after they left Zarahemla for the land of Nephi. We'll study the incredible motives of Ammon, a descendant of Zarahemla, as well as the humility of Limhi, who gratefully accepts his help. We'll also go back in time to read Zeniff's record. His words will teach us about the slippery slope to bondage and the risks of being over-zealous. However, the overarching message of the Savior's deliverance runs through each chapter.Questions to Consider:MOSIAH 7:15 | These seem to be counterpoints to Benjamin's description of his rule. Are there other contrasts that Zeniff might appreciate?MOSIAH 7:25 | Why is fallen a good word choice here? It's almost like the “natural man” is susceptible to the cosmic gravity of the world without GodMOSIAH 7:18-19 | How can you genuinely rejoice in the hope of deliverance? What does this combination of assured deliverance and effectual struggle teach us about Heavenly Father's plan? What does verse 33 of chapter 7 add to this idea?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:06:41 SPARK 1: THE OTHER AMMON00:15:16 SPARK 2: THE BEST INTENTIONS00:26:26 SPARK 3: THE OVER ZEALOUS PRODIGAL00:35:55 QUESTIONS00:40:49 WRAP UPLINKS=====ETSY Printables: https://meckmom.etsy.comWEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. I discuss the mechanics of willpower and choice in the face of temptation. Basically, #1, in the face of temptation, should you have gotten yourself out of the situation or otherwise avoided it in the first place, or can you now? When Joseph in Egypt found himself in a bad situation with Potiphar's wife, he "got him out". He has been described (by Niel A. Maxwell) as having had good legs. So first avoid the situation or get out of it in the first place. Does a certain situation present temptations for you and you know it? Then avoid that situation, if you can. You don't have to ever go to the bar. You don't have to go to that party in the first place. You don't have to even touch alcohol, or drugs. You might not need to hang around that person. You might not need to use that app, or that website. You don't have to stay up way late at night with that person or those people. Be smart. Don't be dumb. Keep yourself out of those situations in the first place. #2, if you HAVE made some bad choices, or are otherwise struggling with a bad habit, or a resentment that's not good for you (they're all not good for you), and you can't seem to break free, you might need to do like the alcoholics anonymous people do, and acknowledge that you can't do it without a higher power. There are many traps in life, not just alcoholism or drug addiction or pornography addiction. Maybe we need God's help with even the "little" things, as well as the "big" things. So pray for that help. Your deliverance may not be immediate, like it wasn't for the people of king Limhi, but "That soul who on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I cannot desert to his foes. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no never, no never forsake." God will make a way for your escape, and "though [you] were dead, yet shall [you] live."

** #103 Mosiah 17-19 ** :: Lim-Hi now available in Orange and Grape flavors! :: Brother Benjamin is back, and we're powering through another 3 chapters of A-Grade Christianese Babble. Smitty even advances his story in between all the meaningless religious phrases he endlessly decorates his verses with. In chapter 19 we finally meet Limhi (again). We first met him in chapter 7, but from chapter 9 it's been the implausible backstory of his nation. Or is it a town? Yet it supports a king with an army and guards. Guards who can't spot a dissident, out in the open, baptising people. Guards who need to surround an unarmed docile prisoner, already in custody, in order to place him back in his cell. Coming up this fall is a Leading Saints Women's Retreat at Bear Lake Utah.  I"ll be hosting that retreat and you can learn more about it next week on the podcast. We read the background story of King Limhi and his oppressed people in The Book of Mormon.  King Limhi had been raised by a very wicked father King Noah and his people were now in subjection to the high taxes and the threat of destruction from the Lamanites.  King Limhi had tried to gain freedom through a series of short wars where they lost many men in battle leaving women and children on their own to be provided for by the community.  During this time King Limhi encountered 4 Nephite men outside the city's protective walls and he had them imprisoned for two days.  When he eventually found out who they were and that they would be the key to their deliverance King Limhi was excited and hopeful.  He called his people to gather at the temple to hear about their new found hope.At the temple King Limhi explains to the people that although deliverance is near there "remaineth an effectual struggle to be made".  They had struggle ahead of them.  But it would be a productive or effective struggle so that they could obtain their desires. So even with deliverance at their door it wasn't going to be handed to them.  Has this been your experience too?  You are in an overwhelming situation or in some kind of bondage and you finally have some answers coming your way.  Maybe it's the right eating protocol or you've finally got a diagnosis for your child's mental struggles or the answer is homeschooling.  But this isn't the end of the road.  It's the hope and what comes next is effort towards something that will bring deliverance.  Elder Neil A. Andersen's talk in April 2022 General Conference, "Following Jesus: Being a Peacemaker" referenced here explains the need to act in a way that does not include anger or malice. So no war to wage against the enemy.  But he also explains that Peacemakers are not passive and gives several examples of Jesus being one. What approach did King Limhi take to secure deliverance?  We read in Mosiah 7:29-32 the pattern.  1. Turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart (genuine wholehearted effort), 2. Put trust in the Lord, and 3. Serve the Lord with all diligence of mind (thoughts focused on Christ). And it is God's will and pleasure to grant deliverance to those that follow this pattern. This is our pattern too.  This is how our efforts or struggle can be effectual.   Next week's podcast is on Boundaries.

This week Moroni takes us back in time a bit to begin to cover the plates that Limhi and his people found: The Book of Ether. Daniel and FIli discuss the Brother of Jared and his experiences with interacting with the Lord. They leave the chaotic world of the Tower of Babel behind and are led through the wilderness and across "many waters." They discuss how what each of us can learn about prayer, asking things of the Lord, and how the Lord uses challenges in our lives to help us learn a grow. They also discuss the importance of the Three Witnesses in the latter-days as a testimony of the plates and by extension, their contents.

What can we learn from Jaredites? As Andrew puts it, it's almost a mini Book of Mormon in that the people follow a similar path in their journey, civilization, faith, and final destruction. Moroni abridges the 24 plates that were found hundreds of years earlier by the people of Limhi in the days of Kind Mosiah. Moroni does not include all of the writings due to a lack of room on the gold plates. He does not include the history of the creation of the world and the days of Adam down unto the Tower of Babel. Those records are also had among the Jews as Moroni stated. The brother of Jared, his family, and some friends language is spared at the Tower of Babel. The Lord commands them to journey into the wilderness and travel to the promised land. They take provisions, cross a smaller sea and then prepare to cross the great sea. Before doing so, they become somewhat idle and after 4 years of not calling upon the Lord, He chastises the brother of Jared. He repents and builds 8 barges after the instructions of The Lord. They are faced with 3 problems once they are built. No air, no light, and no way to steer. The brother of Jared discusses this with The Lord in which he receives answers for 2 of the 3 but is required to work out the problem for having no light. The brother of Jared figures out a way to have light using stones. Because of his exceeding faith, he sees the finger of The Lord and much more. He has a miraculous vision in which he sees all things from the beginning to the end. Never did anyone have the faith that the brother of Jared did. Finally, we discuss the name of the brother of Jared and share a story on how his name was revealed. Was his name in The Book of Mormon all along? Let's find out.
