There's optimism after two wins for the animals. PETA exposed the cruelty at the University of Washington lab of Fritzie Arce-McShane. One monkey was irradiated so frequently that it had to be euthanized. In another development, the director of the Washington National Primate Research Center at UW, Michelle Basso, was ousted by the Board of Regents. Hear why former UW primate scientist, now a PETA scientist, Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, feels shutting down the lab is now a matter of time. “One after another, citizens came up. And they just hammered that council with additional concerns. You know, one of the guys, his place is 500ft from there. He's like, ‘what do you think this is going to do to me, to my family? How dare you expose me and my family and this community! None of you all live around there. How could you have not brought this to a vote?' A woman got up and started talking about the research modernization deal. Another woman got up and started talking about land values. A man got up and started talking about malaria. I mean, it's just one after another. They came up and I just, I don't know… I could have just started levitating because I was so buoyed by what this community was doing. And it has not stopped since then.” – Lisa Jones-Engel There's a small town in Georgia called Bainbridge. It has 15,000 residents, and recently those 15,000 residents were duped by their city and county officials. What happened was that some people came in and proposed a deal to build a $400 million monkey breeding facility, and city and county officials not only agreed to do it, but they gave them almost $60 million in handouts, a 20-year tax abatement, and hundreds of acres of public land. And when the people of Bainbridge found out, they reached out to PETA's Senior Science Advisor, Dr. Lisa Jones Engel. Lisa spent many years working with primates in biomedical laboratories. She knows more about the industry than just about anyone. In 2019, when she couldn't take it anymore, she left the biomedical world and joined forces with PETA with the aim to take the primate testing industry down. And that is exactly what she's doing.

Activists stopped a transfer of 100,000 macaques from Sri Lanka to China. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA primatologist, says had the deal gone through, it would have devastated Sril Lanka's unique toque macaque monkey population and hurt the entire country. By keeping them in Sri Lanka, Jones-Engel says the monkeys were saved from almost surely becoming part of the animal experimentation industry. In conversation with Emil Guillermo. “What I did not expect to see from farmed monkeys being bought and transported into the US, were monkeys who were coming in with things like Ebola like viruses, malaria, tuberculosis, simian retrovirus, herpes viruses, salmonella, Yersinia, Campylobacter, unnamed deadly diarrheal diseases. They were coming in with Tier 1 Select agents. I mean, we're talking pathogens so deadly that the government has identified them as potential bioterrorism threats.” – Lisa Jones-Engel In 2022, 1000 long-tailed macaques were stolen from the wild in Cambodia. They were then illegally imported to Charles River Laboratories in Texas. Illegal because they were wild caught and not born in captivity, which is the law for importing primates into the US for research and experimentation, they are required to be captive bred. These macaques are now caught in the middle of an ongoing federal investigation into primate importers. Charles River wants to send them back to Cambodia, which means that from there they'll go to labs in other countries. PETA is fighting hard to get them sent to Born Free's Primate Sanctuary in Texas. One of the leaders in this battle is Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel. A couple of weeks ago, Lisa came on the show for a live episode to talk about the fate of these monkeys and what could be the beginning of the end of importing primates for experimentation. Because we did this interview as a webinar and Lisa was in a remote part of Alaska, the sound isn't the best, but this is a super important episode. Lisa spent many years working in biomedical laboratories with primates. She knows everything that goes on on the inside of these facilities and knows first-hand that no one in there is looking out for these animals. In 2019, when she couldn't take it anymore, Lisa left the biomedical world and joined forces with PETA. She's PETA's Senior Science Advisor, and not only leading the fight to save these 1000 monkeys, but also to end all imports and then, to end the use of primates in animal research and experimentation period. I think that she can do it. Charles River Labs has a 1,000-monkey problem. It's being investigated for the illegal importation of monkeys from Asia. That fact keeps the company from using the monkeys for research, so it wants to send them back to Asia and start the process over again. Not so fast. PETA advocates the best thing for the monkeys is immediate placement in a sanctuary here. PETA primatologist Lisa Jones-Engel explains how it fits into the big picture of stopping all monkey importation to the U.S. Host Emil Guillermo leads the conversation.
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the bacteria. But it causes a disease called melioidosis. They are the Tier 1 select agents known by the CDC to have been brought into America by the importation of monkeys from Asia. So why isn't the public being warned of the threat? PETA has been working to expose the dangers of the U.S. science community's importation of monkeys. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, a top primate scientist, now a senior science advisor to PETA, explores in this conversation with Emil Guillermo, why the government is enabling the importation of monkeys while downplaying the public threat. PETA has used the public information act to get documents the government would rather the public not know. PETA has shared them in stories on the dangers of monkey importation with major news organizations this month. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, a former Fulbright scholar, and a top primate scientist who once worked at the Washington Primate Research Center, is now a PETA Scientist. She talked to Emil Guillermo about the recent federal indictments of 8 Asian nationals, including two Cambodian government officials, on alleged monkey smuggling charges and the impact that could have on the U.S. research community. If U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Justice Department win their case, it could mean the seizure of thousands of monkeys and force labs to conduct scientific methods that are non-animal, less cruel, and more ethical. Monkey laundering? It's what happens when U.S. labs will pay premiums for monkeys even if they're on the endangered species list. PETA's effort to stop the practice got a boost when the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cracked down on an alleged monkey smuggling ring based in Cambodia this month that was responsible for bringing in thousands of monkeys to labs in the U.S. An arrest in New York resulted in the unsealing of an indictment listing 8 Asian nationals, including top Cambodian government officials, and principals of a major primate supplier. If convicted the indicted could face up to 20 years in prison and be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. PETA began exposing the dark side of monkey importation and laundering in the summer. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA primate expert, talked to podcast host Emil Guillermo in July about how the long-tailed macaque has become endangered by being the prime focus of the monkey smugglers. Jones-Engel describes how they are cruelly treated and how their lives are being wasted in labs in the U.S. See how you can stop the illegal importation of endangered monkeys. When laboratories transport monkeys into the U.S. and throughout the country, every movement must be documented by a veterinary inspection. PETA found it's not being done in dozens of cases involving nearly 2,000 monkeys. These illegal shipments represent a public health risk as monkeys can pass such diseases as tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and Herpes B to humans. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA scientist, talks to Emil Guillermo about how PETA is asking the USDA to suspend and fine research facilities for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Dr. Jones-Engel talks about how awareness was raised after a van carrying monkeys crashed in Danville, Pennsylvania in January this year. And she says how this wouldn't be an issue if researchers simply stopped wasteful, useless and cruel experimentation on animals. Go to PETA.org for more on the illegal shipments of monkeys. It is heartbreaking to hear what is done to these thousands of monkeys brought into the USA. It is also extremely dangerous to us, and we'll find out why in this episode.About Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel: She is a senior science advisor on primate experimentation for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). A Fulbright scholar who has studied the human-primate interface in Africa, Asia, and the primate biomedical facilities of the U.S. for nearly 40 years, she has published 95 peer-reviewed articles spanning the fields of primatology, virology, epidemiology, microbiology, and conservation. Her work includes addressing the neglect and disease risk posed by the University of Washington's Washington National Primate Research Center, where she worked before coming to PETA. DID YOU KNOW: Since the start of the pandemic nearly 70,000 monkeys have been imported into the U.S. These monkeys arrived from more than 300 international shipments and were then trucked to secretive quarantine facilities. Quarantine is designed to protect public health by detecting monkeys arriving with viral hemorrhagic fevers, tuberculosis, pathogens that can cause deadly diarrheal diseases, fatal diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, and Herpes B—a zoonotic macaque virus. Not all the monkeys make it out of quarantine alive and it is not uncommon for dangerous pathogens to be missed, showing up months or years later to threaten public health and further undermine the utility of these monkeys as biomedical models. Primate facilities in Texas and Louisiana acknowledge that the thousands of monkeys whom they are housing outdoors are reservoirs for deadly parasites that can spill over into human populations. PETA has been urging the NIH to move away from experiments on animals, and its campaigns have shut down numerous NIH-funded experiments, including shocking psychological experiments on baby monkeys taken from their mothers shortly after birth.

A former primate researcher turned into an animal activist when she saw how monkeys were dying at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) at the University of Washington, Seattle. It wasn't from the research. The monkeys arrived sick after being bred in the WaNPRC breeding facility in Arizona. Documents obtained by PETA show the site was contaminated with Valley fever, and was 500 meters from another toxic waste site. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel worked at WaNPRC for 14 years and tried to tell her bosses. But they ignored her. Jones-Engel left, and came to work for PETA. Her research was used in an investigative piece by USA Today (Oct. 5, 2021) that showed WaNPRC violated state and federal laws and didn't care about the health and well-being of the monkeys in the breeding colony. Jones-Engel tells Emil Guillermo that the Department of Health and Human Services should shut down both WaNPRC in Seattle and the Arizona breeding facility for providing toxic monkeys to be used in NIH-funded research. The Washington National Primate Research Center in Seattle has been moving sick monkeys around this country for use in labs, according to documents obtained by PETA through an open records law request. Dr.Lisa Jones Engel, a former WaNPRC employee, now PETA's senior scientific advisor for primate experimentation, has reviewed the documents and filed complaints with state and federal authorities. The documents specifically show how the WaNPRC accepted and moved infected monkeys without alerting authorities. This not only causes public health issues but also renders any science from the monkeys unusable. Go to PETA.org for more. Click to see the video. The New York Times reports of a monkey shortage. But there's no monkey shortage at U.S. labs. The Times was used by vivisectors looking to get more monkeys. Dr.Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA Animal consultant and a one-time primatologist with National Primate Research Centers, crunches the numbers and shows that reports of monkey shortages in U.S. labs are exaggerated at best, if not outright lies. Jones-Engel speculates that the centers are taking advantage of a perception that the monkeys have anything major to do with vaccine development. But only 51 monkeys were involved in the development of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. Jones-Engel also talks about the real harm to eco-systems when monkeys are taken from Asia and imported to the U.S. because of the billions of dollars involved in the monkey trade. PETA has released new video showing the horrible conditions monkeys must endure at the multi-million dollar primate facilities at the University of Washington's Washington Primate Research Center. After spending most of her career researching monkeys Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel found she couldn't in good conscience continue her work at the center. Now she works at PETA and advocates the shutting down of the center and the six other primate research centers in the nation. She talks of her ethical journey and the revelations that made her fight for the animals she used to research. She joins Emil Guillermo on the PETA Podcast.
