Angela is joined by Kristen Holmes, to discuss the features and benefits of the WHOOP physiological monitoring device. They delve into the concept of recovery and how WHOOP helps individuals understand their body's response to external stress. They also explore metrics such as heart rate variability, strain, and sleep consistency, highlighting their importance in achieving optimal health and performance, looking at the impact of circadian rhythms, light exposure, and sleep-wake times on overall well-being. KEY TAKEAWAYS WHOOP is a 24/7 physiological monitoring device that tracks heart rate, heart rate variability, strain, and sleep. Recovery is a key metric that measures how well your body is adapting to external stressors. Sleep regularity, or consistent sleep-wake times, is crucial for optimal health and functioning. Heart rate variability is a measure of your body's ability to adapt to stress and is associated with improved cardiovascular and metabolic function. Strain is a measure of cardiovascular load and can be influenced by factors such as exercise intensity, sleep, and stress levels. BEST MOMENTS " We want to try to get ourselves into a regular sleep-wake cycle, we want to focus on waking up at a similar time every single day, because what that does is then where our exposure to light is happening at a similar time” "When we started this whole kind of campaign around strain, it was really to understand how hard your heart is working." "I think it's just getting out of this, like, step mindset and thinking about, 'Alright, how hard is my heart working? And how active am I versus sedentary?'" "It's velocity-based training is kind of what we're understanding how quickly you're moving the weights. And there's an algorithm that helps us understand what that load on your musculoskeletal is." The Building America Solution Center grew out of the Department of Energy's Building America Program. A Program that has been a source of innovations in residential building energy efficiency and performance for over 25 years. The Building America Program leverages cutting-edge building science research to develop the solutions and best practices needed to advance energy efficiency in the homes we are building today. The Solution Center is the platform the Department of Energy is using to disseminate and provide access to the expert information on hundreds of high-performance construction topics, including applied building science, air sealing and insulation, HVAC, windows, indoor air quality, and much more. Recently the Solution Center added the Building Science Advisor which is a no-cost, web-based tool that provides expert guidance on the moisture durability and energy efficiency of new and retrofit wall assembly designs. The Building Science Advisor helps teach building science principles and can inform residential building designers, builders, engineers, and students of building science, on how to specify energy-efficient, moisture-durable wall systems, with a simple, intuitive user-interface. The tool leverages expert knowledge and a database of thousands of pre-simulated hygrothermal models to provide rapid feedback and expert guidance on wall assembly design, tailored to your specific climate zone. If you use this simple modeling tool you can fail fast and move forward quickly while limiting risk exposure and increasing cost effective design. It was a pleasure speaking with the national lab team of experts that help bring this tool forward for our collective use and who guided me through their carrier pathway as well as us through the Building Solution Center and specifically the Building Science Advisor tool. Good Day and welcome to IAQ Radio+ episode 715 this week we welcome Dr. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, and Dr. Richard Bruns to discuss the recently developed Model State Indoor Air Quality Act. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, PhD During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the Center's ongoing efforts to track the development and marketing of molecular and antigen tests and serology tests, as well as the development of national strategies for COVID-19 serology (antibody) tests and SARS-CoV-2 serosurveys in the United States. She leads work on improving indoor air quality to reduce pathogen transmission, including guidance for K-12 schools, and is a public health advisor to the Baltimore City Public School system. She also has written about the scientific response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the contested origin of SARS-CoV-2, and the implications for national and international security. Dr. Gronvall is the author of Synthetic Biology: Safety, Security, and Promise. In the book, she describes what can be done to minimize technical and social risks and maximize the benefits of synthetic biology, focusing on biosecurity, biosafety, ethics, and US national competitiveness—important sectors of national security. Dr. Gronvall is also the author of Preparing for Bioterrorism: The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Leadership in Biosecurity. Through her description of major grants that represented the foundation's investments in civilian preparedness, public health law, law enforcement, air filtering in buildings, influenza preparedness, and business preparedness, she constructed, for a nontechnical audience, a chronicle of early gains in US efforts to confront the threat of bioterrorism. Dr. Gronvall is a member of the Department of State's International Security Advisory Board, which provides advice about arms control, disarmament, nonproliferation, and national security aspects of emerging technologies. She is a member of the Novel and Exceptional Technology and Research Advisory Committee (NExTRAC), which provides recommendations to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and is a public forum for the discussion of the scientific, safety, and ethical issues associated with emerging biotechnologies. As of 2023, she is a member of the National Academies' Forum on Microbial Threats. From 2010 to 2020, Dr. Gronvall was a member of the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee, which provided the Secretary of Defense with independent advice and recommendations on reducing the risk to the United States, its military forces, and its allies and partners posed by nuclear, biological, chemical, and conventional threats. During 2014-2015, she led a preparatory group that examined the US government response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa as a case study for the Department of Defense's strategic role in health security and made recommendations for future Department of Defense actions in response to disease outbreaks. She served as the Science Advisor for the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism from April 2009 until the Commission ended in February 2010. She has testified before Congress about the safety and security of high-containment biological laboratories in the United States and served on several task forces related to laboratory and pathogen security. Dr. Gronvall has investigated and presented policy recommendations on the governance of science to the Biological Weapons Convention in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to being a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Dr. Gronvall is an Associate Editor of the journal Health Security (formerly Biosecurity and Bioterrorism). She is a founding member of the Center. Prior to joining the faculty, she worked at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies. She was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, Maryland. Dr. Gronvall received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University for work on T-cell receptor/MHC I interactions and worked as a protein chemist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She received a BS in biology from Indiana University, Bloomington. Richard Bruns, PhD PhD Clemson University 2012 MS Clemson University 2009 BS Western Carolina University 2004 Particular research interests are using cost-benefit analysis to make the world's preparations for pandemics and emerging biological risks as effective as possible; and expanding the use of QALYs to better measure a variety of life states and social conditions, so that cost-benefit analysis can include and properly account for all expected side effects of public policies. Previously, Richard was a Senior Economist at the Food and Drug Administration, doing cost-benefit modeling of many FDA regulations and actions, including the Intentional Adulteration rule designed to harden food production facilities against terrorist attacks, the PHO GRAS determination aka ‘trans fat ban', and a variety of other rules relating to food and medical devices. Richard also did preliminary modeling on FDA's upcoming Nicotine Product Standard, a de facto ban on cigarettes that would cause many significant effects on public health and safety, as well as research to quantify and monetize the marginal per-unit effects of a variety of food contaminants, such as mycological toxins and arsenic in rice.

Sarah Gallo is Vice President of Product Policy at the Consumer Brands Association (CBA). In her role, Sarah holistically oversees Consumer Brands' policy leadership on smart regulation issues, from advocacy through education to marketplace solutions. Prior to joining CBA, she served as Vice President of Agriculture and Environment for the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, where she led the organization's strategy across agriculture, food systems, energy, and bio-based manufacturing. Earlier in Sarah's career, she held roles at CHS Inc. and the National Corn Growers Association and served as Agriculture Counsel with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Small Business. She graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Marine Biology. In this episode of Food Safety Matters, we speak with Sarah [24:28] about: CBA's key recommendations for FDA during its restructuring, and how those suggestions are  informed by looking at FDA modernization through the lens of the consumer Specific changes that CBA believes could help FDA transition from one-size-fits-all inspections to a tailored, risk-based model for inspections CBA's partnership with Stop Foodborne Illness and FDA, which aims to improve recall communication through the use of modernized channels and digital technologies CBA's call to FDA to standardize labeling and “last mile” communication in e-commerce food sales, and the Association's work to support FDA's development of such standards How digital tools that are already being leveraged by industry—like SmartLabel technology—can be better used to modernize labeling, and why nutrition and consumer transparency must go hand-in-hand when thinking about front-of-pack labeling Why FDA action regarding regulation for chemicals of concern in food packaging—such as PFAS and BPA—is urgent to avoid a wave of contradictory, state-by-state legislation The benefits of public-private collaboration in the creation of FDA guidances for industry, as well as guidances that CBA believes are important for FDA to develop. Dr. José Emilio Esteban was sworn in as Under Secretary for Food Safety on January 4, 2023. In this role, Dr. Esteban leads the Office of Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), overseeing the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which has regulatory oversight for ensuring that meat, poultry, and egg products are safe, wholesome, and properly labeled. While other countries sit in fear with "they are going to eat us" Slide 9 attitudes leading to massive secrecy, Canada begins their second UFO disclosure study called "The Sky Canada Project. The public report will be released in spring 2024. In a series of "discreet inquiries" in the United States, in 1950 Canada discovered five critical points about flying saucers based on what the director Wilbert Smith was told about the flying saucer program in the United States. Unfortunately, this material has been ignored in favor of various other stories that got more clicks. 1) The matter of UFOs was the most highly classified subject in the US, a rating higher than the H-bomb 2) Flying saucers exist 3) Their modus operandi is unknown, but concentrated effort is being made by a small group headed by Dr. Vannevar Bush (Of 'MJ-12' fame) 4) The entire matter is considered by US authorities to be of tremendous significance. 5) There were several other things, including "mental phenomena," that were being studied because of their possible link to the saucers. The study will be headed up by the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Mona Nemer. She was the former head of research at the University of Ottawa. There are also a series of parliamentary members who are supporting the effort. I hope to have all their names before the study is released. For information on the Canadian government's earlier work in the area I have a book written on the early Canadian study. https://www.amazon.com/CANADIAN-GOVERNMENT-UFO-STORY-Wilbert/dp/B09NGS7DH1/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=Grant+Cameron&qid=1678331827&s=books&sr=1-17

One vitally important part of that work is a project that I have been working on with Dr. Francis Collins. (Learn more about the "Truth & Trust Project" by  listening to DTH Episodes 119 and 120). Though Francis and I disagree on many aspects of the government's response to the pandemic, we have developed a genuine friendship. As part of our work together, Francis suggested and exercise by asking me, "What makes up your web of beliefs?"What is this "Web of Beliefs?"With Dr. Francis Collins being the former director of the National Institutes of Health, one of the most notable scientists in American history, and the acting Science Advisor to the President of the United States, you might ask, "what could he possibly have in common with a blue collar podcaster from the Midwest"? Combine that with the notion that I have been an outspoken critic of the government's response to the pandemic, and Dr. Collins played a significant role in that response. By today's standards, we should hate each other, or at least do a lot of yelling and name calling. We took a different path. It's all about communication and seeing the humanity and values in who you're speaking with.  Don't miss this incredible conversation where Francis and I discuss how this exercise, "The Web of Beliefs" showed us that we ultimately have more in common than what separates us. While some of our beliefs are very different, the values for which we stand are very much in line. This is what civility despite differences looks like. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us leading a better life. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for everything you've got. What do extraordinarily creative people have in common, and what tools do they use to access breakthrough ideas and insights? What lessons can we draw from the blunders made by some of the pioneering scientists from history to pursue our own professional quests? And can these same lessons be used to reduce polarization and create a more unified world? Listen to some powerful insights on the power of dissolving boundaries from Dr. Mario Livio, in an exclusive conversation with Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa, on Intersections Podcast. National reckons its reboot of boot camps will be different this time around. The revived policy would mean 15 year olds and older, who commit at least two serious crimes could be sentenced to boot camp for a year. There will be wraparound services when they're out. And National says if its works they could include even younger offenders. But a numbers of studies show bootcamps are ineffective when it comes to lowering reoffending rates and a former chief Science Advisor found scared straight progammes have been shown to increase crime. National's police spokesperson Mark Mitchell talks to Lisa Owen. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6315768165112

Dinosaurs. Just the word fires up the imaginations of young and old alike - and nobody knows dinosaurs better than Don Lessem! To say he is one of the most fascinating guests I've had on my Lessons From The Tank podcast would be an understatement! Here are just a few facts about Don: He is a writer of over 50 popular science books specializing in dinosaurs. He was the founder of the Dinosaur Society and the Jurassic Foundation, which have raised millions for dinosaur research. He was Science Advisor to Steven Spielberg on the original Jurassic Park movie. He has a bachelor's degree in art history, a master's in animal behavior, AND an actual dinosaur named after him – an accomplishment that only a handful of people today can claim. Don got a deal with Mark Cuban for his animatronics company, Dino Don, which creates accurate life-sized robotic dinosaurs, dragons, sea creatures, and more for exhibition in zoos and museums worldwide. (In fact, he was so sure of what he wanted that Don wore a shirt on the show that said “We love you Mark Cuban” on the back.) In this episode of Lessons From The Tank, Don shares wisdom from his years of experience as an entrepreneur and world traveler, including business gold like this; Always have three projects going within your scope of business: The first is the one that's working, the second is the one that you're working on, and the third is the one you're brainstorming. Start from the top and work your way down. Go big. Go for the thing (investor, venue, customer, etc.) you want most and if that doesn't work out, move to the next.
