Last week, Oregon State Police, joined by multiple state and local agencies, completed a search of a roadside zoo in Bandon on the Southern Oregon Coast. More than 300 animals were seized and relocated to animal sanctuaries or rescue facilities. Three animals, including a camel, were euthanized because they were determined to be in such poor health they could not be transported or treated, according to OSP. The Oregon Humane Society, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife assisted OSP with the four-day search and criminal investigation, which is ongoing. The now-closed West Coast Game Park Safari opened in 1972 and lured visitors with a chance to encounter exotic animals like tigers, lions, chimpanzees and emus. Over the years, it had garnered numerous complaints from community members and organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals over suspected animal neglect and possible violations of state wildlife regulations. Inspectors at the Department of Agriculture cited the roadside zoo 78 times in the past year alone for animals that had gone missing, appeared underfed or were denied adequate veterinary care, among other violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Jefferson Public Radio reporter Justin Higginbottom has been following this story and joins us with more details.
New research has found Australia's horticulture industry is booming, generating a record $17 billion dollars worth of product last financial year, a tuna boat fishing trip from Port Lincoln is still proving popular with both locals and visitors and major reforms to the state's Animal Welfare Act has now come into force - but do not include a provision to allow the use of virtual fencing.

In this episode of *The Animal Control Report*, hosted by Daniel Ettinger and Ashley Bishop, we dive into a recent lawsuit filed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over its alleged failure to properly regulate a notorious Iowa puppy mill. The lawsuit targets breeder Steve Kruse, whose facility has been the subject of countless violations of the Animal Welfare Act, yet continues to operate under USDA licensure. We'll explore the shocking details of the USDA's inspection reports, including the appalling conditions at Kruse's large-scale kennel and the repeated renewal of his license despite well-documented evidence of animal abuse and neglect. Our hosts will also discuss the broader implications of this case for the animal welfare community and the disturbing pattern of federal oversight failures that allow commercial breeders like Kruse to continue profiting at the expense of the animals' well-being. Join us for an eye-opening conversation about the ongoing fight to protect animals from cruelty and the accountability gap in the USDA's enforcement of animal welfare laws. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/animalcontrolreport/support
Two years ago, police and federal agents raided a dog-breeding facility west of Richmond, confiscating more than 4,400 animals – many in urgent need of veterinary care. Sandy Hausman reports that Envigo pleaded guilty Monday to a violation of the Animal Welfare Act and will pay the largest fine in history for that offense.
What does justice mean for animals? Is justice for animals the same as justice for human beings? Why should we care more about the rights of animals when the rights of humans are so often neglected? Martha Nussbaum teaches philosophy, ethics, and law at the University of Chicago, and is one of the most influential and cited philosophers of our time. She's written dozens of books on Greek philosophy, the importance of emotions in politics, justice, feminism, and many other topics. She joins the podcast to discuss her new book, Justice for Animals: Our Collective Responsibility. Shadi begins the conversation by inquiring about the moral motivations behind Professor Nussbaum's advocacy for animal rights. He also wonders how human beings can, given their finite resources and time, focus on animal rights over other issues, like war or poverty. Nussbaum pushes back, arguing that animal rights is only one part of a web of issues, like overpopulation and climate change, that have to be addressed holistically. Sam provides some philosophical background, placing Nussbaum's thought within the context of her work as a whole, which is focused on justice, freedom, and human flourishing. It's an energetic episode, where three sharp minds constantly challenge each other to clarify their thoughts. Ultimately, the question of the meaning of life—both for animals and humans—emerges, as Nussbaum asks whether death should be perceived as something negative, and Shadi considers the significance of belief in the afterlife. Bowhunting and Bowfishing to be banned by the end of 2024 Lisien Loan, Director of Conservation and Wildlife, updates on South Australia's commitment to ban bows and crossbows for hunting animals. The decision stemmed from community feedback and the Animal Welfare Act 1985 review. Originally proposed through amendments to the National Parks and Wildlife (Hunting) Regulations 2011, the ban now takes a comprehensive approach. The ban, expected to take effect in 2024, prohibits the use of bows and crossbows for hunting any animal in South Australia, with fines of up to $1,000 for violations. Despite the ban, recreational use of bows and crossbows, like target archery, remains unaffected. For further details and FAQs, visit the Department for Environment and Water's website. The ban affects various groups, including holders of Basic Hunting Permits, Aboriginal hunters, landholders dealing with crop or property damage, and bow fishers.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Extending Existing Animal Protection Laws, published by Moritz Stumpe on December 4, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This report was conducted within the pilot for Charity Entrepreneurship's Research Training Program in the fall of 2023 and took around eighty hours to complete (roughly translating into two weeks of work). Please interpret the confidence of the conclusions of this report with those points in mind. For questions about the structure of the report, please reach out to leonie@charityentrepreneurship.com. For questions about the content of this research, please contact Moritz Stumpe at moritz@animaladvocacyafrica.org. The full report can also be accessed as PDF here. Thank you to Karolina Sarek and Aashish Khimasia for their review and feedback. Executive summary This research report was conducted as part of Charity Entrepreneurship's Research Training Program. The aim of this report was to explore the potential of extending current animal protection laws, conventions, and directives to adjacent areas, which might be more feasible than proposing entirely new laws. This research focused on identifying and evaluating laws in various geographic regions and prioritising ideas based on their potential impact. The key findings of the report are as follows: The Shandong guidelines on chicken handling, transport, and slaughter, passed in 2016, could provide a highly promising area for extending legislation. Several extension ideas are proposed. These issues should be investigated in more depth by consulting with existing animal advocacy groups and experts in China to determine next steps. The UK's Animal Welfare Act 2006 may also be a promising law to extend. Potential extensions to fishing and/or invertebrates should be investigated further. The Ohio Administrative Code, Section 901:12, currently only bans caging practices in production. This ban could be extended to sales, thus also affecting state imports. This intervention idea should be passed on to existing animal advocacy groups in the U.S., which they may pursue or investigate further. EU Regulation 1/2005 and Directive 98/58 could be extended to (farmed) fish. This intervention idea should be passed on to existing animal advocacy groups at the EU level, which they may pursue or investigate further. Other laws yield less promising ideas for extension. Overall, these ideas have only been investigated in a relatively shallow manner. This report should act as inspiration for further work and research to determine the real merits of the proposed ideas. 1 Aim The topic for this report is a scoping exercise, with the goal of looking at existing animal protection laws, conventions, directives, and other regulatory frameworks (called only 'laws' from here on) and see how they could be extended to adjacent areas. This was chosen as a research area because extending existing laws might be more tractable than proposing completely new ones. The idea was to investigate relevant laws and geographic regions, find potential ideas in this context, and then prioritise those ideas in terms of their promisingness. The most promising ideas were selected to undergo a quick review, based on which recommendations for further research were made. 2 Research process The basis for this report is this spreadsheet, which I set up to structure my research. The most relevant, but not all, findings from the spreadsheet are included in this report. Additionally, the report includes findings that were not included in the spreadsheet. Interested readers may thus consult the spreadsheet for further information and details regarding the entire research process. However, this report acts as a standalone resource and is more relevant than the spreadsheet, summarising the most crucial and action-relevant information from my research. In thi...
As an important midweek announcement, tune into our mid-week bulletin We're joined by Amber Ellis @theofficialbullycoalition and Felix Robinson @PetTrustUk talking about the urgent fundraising appeal initiated by Sophie Coulthard @dontbanmelicensemeThe funds raised so far have allowed for Barrister John Cooper to be appointed and serve Thérèse Coffey, EFRA and DEFRA, with a Pre Action Protocol Letter in Judicial Review. The capital is to fund the Judicial Review on the XL Bully ban as the case proceeds. With a tight deadline, groups are campaigning to raise the remaining funds to ensure the suit goes forward. As part of the banning so many owners face the fact that the ban is based on measurements. Or as it stands there is only one measurement which is 19 inches or more in height. A chunky build, some wrinkles, and muscular shoulder blade are the definitions.Felix explains why she on realising this, and that her Boxer, Sammy, fits this ‘type' measurement (as do millions of other breeds and mixes). Understanding the fear of going out with your dog Pet Trust UK has created a digital dog tag containing proof of insurance, exemption, vets, and a raft of other valuable information be in one place - making supplying proof of paperwork is simple in the event its needed. As a landmark situation years after the Dangerous Dogs Act has clearly not worked, the Judicial review will challenge its restrictions as breaking the Animal Welfare Act, and the Five Freedoms. It will also present the science behind why banning a breed is NOT the way forward, rather licensing, education, support at all levels in line with a nation of animal lovers. This week we're joined by Phil Green, animal advocate, dog lover and proud pet parent to Scarlett the Beagle. Rescued by The Beagle Freedom Project in 2016 from a toxicology laboratory in Hungary, she had been bred by Marshall Bio Resources at the huge HQ in New York for the purpose of vivisection. Scarlett is one of the very few lucky ones enabled freedom, aged only two years. Both Phil and Janie Green had their names down for a rescued Beagle, understanding the long socialisation journey ahead. Scarlett adapted very well to her rural life in Essex, and enjoys the sights, sounds and smells of woodlands, and outdoors that she was deprived of. Scarlett has helped raise awareness of the atrocities that these Beagles endure in their very short terribly sad lives. In the hands of ‘white coats' that justify their salaries from private ‘Big Pharma' firms making everything from cleaning products to headache pills. The practice of vivisection is morally and financially bankrupt in an age when we have advanced technology that can do testing more economically, accurately, and without causing huge suffering to animals - in this Beagle. Scarlett has become the face of many campaigns , not least The Camp Beagle, to raise awareness and urge the public to support her in getting vivisection - the dark secret - raised in Parliament, get legislation amended in line with the Animal Welfare Act.Sign the Petition hereScarlet on TwitterScarlet on InstagramCamp Beagle on InstagramBeagle Freedom Project on InstagramFor more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsTo advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com
This week we're joined by animal lover and animal advocate, John O'Callaghan, who has launched Dog Advocacy Ireland, a not for profit organisation aiming to make change! Known as the puppy farm capital of Europe, hundreds of puppy farms are permitted to operate without fear of detection or prosecution, to ‘breed for greed' in an illegal industry which yields at least €200 million annually. He discusses why change is needed where a Government misappropriates tax-payers money in funding hare coursing and Greyhound Racing, despite public opposition, and must be held accountable for condoning dog/animal mistreatment. John explains why Ireland has a poor reputation when it comes to animal welfare despite legislation including The Animal Welfare Act and the Control of Dogs Act, Parliament is divided. "Dog Advocacy Ireland is openly inviting ALL right-minded dog/animal lovers to join our non-profit organisation in forging meaningful change of mindset and policy on dog/animal welfare protection in our country. We want Government to uphold current legislation, under the Animal welfare Act 2013 which includes the duty of care under the Five Freedoms. Similarly, Dog Advocacy Ireland wants to ensure that local authorities work proactively in line with the ‘Control of Dogs Act' to encourage and support responsible dog ownership. Bringing dog welfare centre stage in public consciousness, together with cooperative engagement with the political system, is paramount in effecting meaningful change. John discusses why government's abdication of statutory responsibilities on dog/animal welfare protection legislation has reached intolerable levels. This week Anna is joined by Trainer and Behaviour consultant, Hannah Molloy. With a BSc in Animal Behaviour, she has written “What's Your Dog Thinking?', starred on Channel 4's Puppy School and most recently organised sessions at APDAWG on ‘Dog Bites'. We discuss how Hannah decided make dogs her main focus rather than working with horses or cats. She started her career working in the Birmingham area and over seven years trained over 10,000 dogs in group sessions and one to ones. We chat about why dog bite incidents are on the rise and whether it's directly related to the the pandemic, and the sudden surge in dog ownership, or whether it's a problem that's been brewing for sometime. Hannah believes since about 2003. Her aim is to guide people towards dogs that suit our modern lifestyles, ones that can adapt to apartment living, bred for temperament and health. She champions that greater responsibility needs to be taken, and an awareness of our Duty of Care as defined in the Animal Welfare Act, and refined as the Five Domains. We discuss over exaggerated features in breeds, which arguably has spear headed certain breeds huge popularity leading to dogs being sold online, which continues to boom, despite campaigning to stop puppy shopping on the internet.Follow on Instagram and TwitterIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. “It's almost like the Animal Welfare Act is like a safety, a security blanket, because it's like, ‘Oh, we have the Animal Welfare Act to protect the animals, they're okay.' And they don't realize that it's actually not very strong and that it's not being very aggressively enforced.” – Rachel Fobar In February, Eric Kleinman from the Animal Welfare Institute was on the podcast. He came on to talk about the Envigo Dogs - the 4000 beagles that were rescued last summer from a breeding facility for lab animals, and trafficked monkeys, and the many many failures of the USDA to enforce the Animal Welfare Act. Before Eric and I met, he sent me a ton of articles on much of the above, and many of them were National Geographic stories written by Rachel Fobar. Rachel is a National Geographic reporter who covers wildlife crime and exploitation, everything from the USDA's failures to roadside zoos to monkeys being forced to work in Thailand's coconut trade. I asked Rachel to come on the show because I want to better understand why it is that we are allowing the USDA, who almost never does their job, to be in charge of the Animal Welfare Act. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 60 million American households have pets. That is a ton of good boys and girls out there. But have you ever stopped and wondered about the laws that define pet ownership? Are there specific pets that you can't own where you live? How regulated is the pet trade? And what about exotic animals, where the sale and trade of such creatures is a state-by-state issue? In this episode, we break down the wild and wooly world of pet law — from the protections granted (or not so much) in the Animal Welfare Act to the effect that Netflix's breakout pandemic hit "Tiger King" may have had on getting the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed and what's next for regulating primate ownership in the U.S.And it's not just big mammals that need to be regulated to stop wreaking havoc on communities, but also pythons and feral cats. In Florida, the Burmese python population has exploded so much that the state has declared open season on them allowing them to be hunted year-round without a license or permit. And nationwide, the songbird population has declined by drastic numbers due to the skilled hunting of cats.Special guests:Kate Dylewsky, assistant director of government affairs at the Animal Welfare InstituteJohn Goodwin, senior director of the Stop Puppy Mills campaign at the Humane Society of the United StatesTim Pylate, executive director at Armand Bayou Nature CenterZandra Anderson, animal law attorneyThis episode was produced by Kirk McDaniel. A British man was in court last week after he was arrested for “allegedly” causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The crime: Putting his ding dong inside the mouth of a seagull. The man entered a plea of “Not Guilty” and was granted unconditional bail until his trial at a later date. My name is Austin Adams, and what I got for you today is going to be a little bit of a mix of, uh, Zelensky the Ukrainian president, uh, apparently winning time person of the year, which I think is interesting. Uh, then we're also going to discuss how he allegedly has ties to one of the top Valencia designers coming on the backs of the controversy surrounding children and the pictures that, you know, we touched on that for a little bit last time. So we will talk about that correlation here. Then we are going to jump into how a judge dismissed the lawsuit over Jamal Khashoggi murder. After specifically the Biden administration backed his immunity, uh, for the Saudi Crown Prince. Uh, then we will go into all things Twitter gait. Now, if you have not heard, and you may not have at this point, uh, Twitter gate is the release of files from Elon Musk outlining kind of what happened during the election cycle with Hunter Biden's laptop. If you recall, there was tons of censorship, tons of warnings, a whole bunch of shenanigans going on during the elections, uh, between Donald Trump and President Biden. Uh, so we will jump into all that, see what they had to say, see what the implications of that are. Uh, we will also talk a bit about, uh, what Elon Musk has talked about recently. Uh, he's currently being investigated over some stuff, uh, as a result of this Twitter gate. Some people. As a kind of pushback from the federal government for doing so. And he also said that he wanted to rightfully punch Kanye West in the mouth, , which we will talk about also. And, and I don't disagree with him because he's just been, okay, we'll, we'll, we'll talk about that first. Alright, but , but . But before I forget, go ahead and hit that subscribe button. Yeah, that's what it would do. I'd do a lot of other things too, like help us in the ratings and all that stuff. Get us pushed out to more people. Get this message in front of. But I digress. Thank you for listening and let's jump into it. Welcome to Red Pill Revolution. My name is Austin Adams. Red Pill Revolution started out with me realizing everything that I knew, everything that I believed, everything I interpret about my life is through the lens of the information I was spoonfed as a child. Religion, politics, history, conspiracies, Hollywood medicine, money, food, all of it. Everything we know was tactfully written to influence your decisions and your view on reality by those in power. I'm on a mission, a mission to retrain and reeducate myself to find the true reality of what is behind that curtain. And I'm taking your ass with me. Welcome to the Revolution, Ry. Let's jump into it. And I did say that we would talk about this first. So , I will do it and I should probably get it out of the way. Uh, if you recall, I have put out some videos. I have talked in depth about what was going on with Kanye West. So let's address this situation. Kanye West has since gone off the rails. I have not listened to the full Alex Jones interview, but there was about 15 minutes of highlights that I will save you from. Uh, but I will go listen to the full thing to see and get my real thoughts on this. But from the clips that I listen to and the context, which again, I don't have the full context of the things that he said, but it sounds a lot like. What people were accusing Kanye West of is true. Now, originally, originally, what Kanye West did was if you were not up to date on this situation, Kanye West was calling out industry elites. He was calling out specifically the owners of entertainment companies that own all of the athletes contracts, all of the musicians contracts, all of the, uh, famous people that you know, models all of them. And, and he was calling them out for giving unfair business practices and doing shady business deals. Now he was also calling them out for making him look crazy and, and all of this stuff too. Now, if you have any background on this, you know that there's definitely some truth to these things, right? You understand that there are elite individuals and, and some people hate the word elite, but it's the word that we got, sorry guys. Elite individuals, billionaires, trillionaires around the world who are owners of these large companies and, and they pedal influence socially and make people look terrible. They, you know, potentially Epstein people, all of that type of crazy stuff. So Kanye West came out and, and made a, a big huge podcast interview rounds with all of the larger podcasts that are out there, and he just stopped with info war. With Alex Jones. Now, I, I don't know why he thought Infowars was the place to do this, but he went wild on Infowars. He literally, word for word, said that he loves Hitler. And you, you saw Alex Jones try to like, backpedal him and say like, well, you don't love Hitler. You love the, because I guess they were talking about, you know, the, uh, if you didn't know that the Nazi uniforms were created by Hugo Boss. Interesting. Right? Uh, They were talking about that and Alex Jones go, well, you didn't love that. You loved their fashion. Right? You don't love Adolph Hitler. You love, you know, what, what their fashion was. And he goes, no, there's a lot of things about Nazis that I like. . He, he, I think even at one point he said, I love Nazis. Like all of the wrong things that you say in his position when people were already calling you antisemitic for, specifically pointing to the Jewish Cerian mafia out there that is allegedly controlling news media, controlling entertainment industries and, and calling people to at least pointing it out and trying to raise awareness surrounding what's happening here. And you know, in the same way that you talk about the Italian mafia, and you're not talking about Italian people, there's something to be said that you can speak about a group as an organiz. Due to their ties to one another, and have it not be specifically in a negative connotation about whatever it is that ties to them together. Right? You can have an organization like the Italian Mafia and say, I hate the Italian Mafia. I don't like what they stand for. They kill people. They're terrible people. The Italian Mafia is just a horrible, horrible organization. And then people come in and start going, oh, you're racist against Italians. It's like, no, I'm talking about the ones who kill people. And they just so happen to have. Ties personally to each other. That is the result of Lineage. And in this case it's lineage slash religion as Judaism is, uh, so, and Jewish individuals. So, so that's kind of the differentiation that I find myself in when we're talking about these things. There are absolutely an overwhelming majority of people who own entertainment industries and, and are a part of that elitist class who, who just so happen to be Jewish now. That's nothing against the Jewish race or Jewish class or religion or, uh, lineage. Nothing at all against that. They're just so happens to be that tie and when you call on that tie, not on the things that are actually related to that religion or lineage. Right? That that should not be an issue. So if you talk about the Italian mafia, the Italian mafia is bad. You talk about Jewish, uh, the, the, the Jewish Cerian Mafia, whatever, that some people coin the term, right? All of the people who have, you know, passed down the, the, uh, conspiracy bloodline type things, the George Soros is the Rockefellers, the, you know, go, the list goes on and on. But they all have some sort of ties and the portion of them just so happened to be Jewish, and that was what it seemed to be that what Kanye West was alluding to originally. Now, he went off the rails and just started spewing what is actually antisemitism to say that you support Nazis to say that you like Adolph Hitler in, in any way, shape or form. And like I said in the original one, there's nothing you can do to defend that, right? There's absolutely nothing right now. You can, I, I, I feel like in the same way that you can call it the Italian mafia, Not because they're Italian, but because they're a mafia . It's like where it really comes into play. But that's my 2 cents now. We'll jump into that more when we talk about Elon Musk wanting to punch Kanye in the face. But I did just wanna get outta that. The way I don't support Kanye West in this sense, I don't agree with him on that at all. I think what he said was obviously horrible and terrible and shouldn't be repeated. And in a world where we're only what one and a half generations removed from World War ii, barely one generation removed from World War ii, this is not what we want to spread right now. We should absolutely call out people who are disproportionately negatively affecting culture in society and, you know, social engineering in the, in the worst ways, which is obviously a very real thing in these elitist individual trillion, billion. But once you start calling an entire group based on their religion, ethnicity, lineage, that's obviously not a good thing. Don't do that. Right. So not on the Kanye, Kanye Western, uh, I, I jumped off. Um, but I do still agree with some of the things that he was calling out as far as the, uh, you know, entertainment industry preying on, you know, and then specifically, you know, was what he was saying was black individuals and, and people who are minorities and putting them into terrible contractual relationships, controlling the media, calling people crazy and making it real because they own every outlet that you could do it on. Right. Anyways, I digress. Let's move on to the next topic here, which is going to be that the president of Ukraine, president Zelensky, was named Times person of the year. You heard that right? President Zelensky was named Person's Time. Person's time of the Year, times person of the year. And this is just, I mean, I don't even know what to say. So this article comes from Forbes, . There's probably a couple other people who maybe deserve it. Now, obviously, he's dealing with a tremendous amount of pressure, a tremendous amount of stress, and in the public eye has handled it fairly well. Now, there's been tons of propaganda surrounding zelensky and the things that he said like, I don't need a ride. I need ammo. It's like, you know that maybe that didn't happen. This according to some sources, but let's read on this right here. Ukrainian President Voir Zelensky, was named Times person of the year for 2022 on Wednesday in recognition of his time as Ukrainians leader during Russia's invasion, as Ukrainian forces doubt their deepest attack on Russian soil this week. It talks about the key facts are the magazine emphasizes Zelensky decision to stay in Kiev at the start of Russia's invasion in February, noting how the former comedian became an immediate rallying cry for his country, at least. They call him what he is. A comedian, uh, Zelensky has held nightly speeches through social media and has continued to speak with the media, including his involvement during a recent New York Time summit, Aaron Judge who broke the single season American League record for home runs while winning the League's MVP award for the New York Yankees was named Athlete of the Year and timed named Black Pink, the Entertainer of the Year. Not even sure who that person is. Hmm. Right. Here's a quote that they call out here, which is that already the next generation of Ukrainians, like Zelensky own son, were learning about the tools of war. Instead of planning for prosperity, the magazine wrote about Zelensky wartime leadership. That is the pattern the president aims to disrupt, and his plans rely more than, relies more on weapons, relies on more than weapons, sorry. All right. Now, uh, this says key background talking about Adolph Hitler. Uh, the time person of the year categorically has historically been associated with people who have been most influential during this year, ranging from previous title holders like Greta Thornberg and Pope Francis, two, Vladimir Putin and Adolph Hitler. Thank you Forbes for calling it as it is. Just because you get Times person of the year does not mean that you are an incredible individual. As a reminder, a Dolf, Hitler and Vladimir Putin himself have both been called persons. F times person of the year. So both Putin and Hitler have been Times person of the year. So take this with a grain of salt is he Times person of the year. Again, he's dealt with tremendous amounts of stress and, and in the public eye he's dealt with it well. There is such a reminder that should be made as he's an actor comedian to begin with, who loves to dance in leather pants. But again, I can't, I can't imagine the amount of stress on these people. So, you know, take my commentary for what it is, but I just find it comical that a literal comedian and actor turned president turned puppet for NATO is Times person of the year. Like the, I really am not immediately coming up with answers as to who this should have been, , um, but maybe, maybe Elon Musk, if he's never been it, I, I would say he's probably had a tremendous impact, um, maybe even more so than Zelensky being a puppet for nato. And, uh, You know, coming up with comedic gold dancing videos in leather pants. Anyways, all right, so the next thing is going to be that we're gonna discuss here is going to be that Zelensky tapped top Valencia designer to oversee charity for Ukrainian refugees. So the same guy who got called Times person of the year was calling on a top Valencia designer to oversee the charity for Ukrainian refugees. You know, the Valencia that was actively engaging in endorsing pedophilia was the one that the president of Ukraine called on to head charities for Ukrainian refugees. You literally cannot make that up. That is a crazy correlation. Causation, who knows? But correlation nonetheless, that Zelensky is working with a top Balenciaga designer. Especially when we're talking about the recent news and all of the things that just came out about Valencia with their satanic pedophilia based ad campaigns all over. Right. And we're finding it that I'm, one thing I'm really happy about with the Valencia thing, and I guess happy isn't the right word, but it, but it, it's relieving to know that these things are still in the public conversation. They're still being, uh, pushed towards good. Right? Because the more people that wake up to this stuff, the more that it becomes a conspiracy theorist that, that these things are going on, uh, or a conspiracy theory that these things are going on, the more that it gets a negative light shut on it. But what the negative light should be shut on is Valencia not the people calling them out for doing, for endorsing pedophilia. The, the, the light should be shed on Zelensky for paying a topia designer to oversee a charity, which is very likely for children, refugees in Ukraine. Probably not the person that you would want to do that with. Uh, so let's read this real quick and see what it has to say. It says, UK Ukraine. Ukrainian President, Zelensky over the summer had recruited top fashion brand, Valencia's creative director to oversee a charity supporting Ukrainian refugees, United 24, which builds itself as a charity, aimed at rebuilding Ukraine and helping refugees claimed in July that Valencia's artistic director, DEMA, who only goes by his first name, would become the organization's ambassador, Demna artistic director for Valencia, selected as ambassador for United 24. He will be exclusively dedicated to rebuild Ukraine, direction for helping refugees. The charity tweeted, which included a link to its website. Now, if I call re, if I recall correctly, Demna was in a big piece of this all, a big piece of it. Now it goes on to say that the humanitarian rebuild Ukrainian direction focuses exclusively on the renovation of critical infrastructure facilities such as roads, bridges, hospitals, and schools to enable refugees to come back to their homes and restart their lives. This came before Valencia was recently embroiled in a scandal over its disturbing ad campaigns, overseen by Denmark, specifically featuring children holding teddy bears in BDSM outfits in a hidden Supreme Court document over to turning a child pornography law. So Zelensky literally hired the person who is the head of directing the Valencia campaigns or surrounding pedophilia to run a refugee program out of Ukraine. There's no way that that's not in some way, shape, or form tied the fact that that comes up and immediately this becomes a conversation. There's no way these things don't have at least a, a, a thin string of yarn connecting them. Says Valencia has since scrubbed its social media presence before issuing numerous apologies after weeks of silence. Demos last, uh, week issued an apology for incorporating a child in BDSM and a cult themed Valencia, a campaign that erupted into a full fledged scandal that culminated with former fans burning Valencia merchandise in protests of its pedophilia. Themes. Themes. This was his response. I want to personally apologize for the wrong artistic choice of concept for the gifting campaign with the kids. And I take my responsibility. It was inappropriate to have kids promote objects that had nothing to do with them. The 41 year old wrote on Instagram, I apologize to anyone offended by the visuals in Balenciaga has guaranteed that adequate measures will be taken not only to avoid similar mistakes in the future. Geez, I hope so. But also to take accountability in protecting child welfare in every way we. Including likely abducting Ukrainian refugees? Oh, allegedly. Speaking of a cultism, in some bizarre new iteration of asymmetric warfare, Ukrainian's Ministry of Defense announced Monday I had recruited actual witches to cast hexes and curses on Russian soldiers. What, what , okay, let's read that one. That's interesting. It says, notably, Ukraine has also been leveraging the openly neo-Nazi as of battalion who's been captured on video conducting pagan blood and soil rituals. What's with Ukraine's ties to the ult? The creation of the charity is curious given, uh, Ukraine's already received tens of billions of dollars from US taxpayers to prop up its war against Russia and launder money Back to Democratic campaigns. Where did all that money go? Uh, and here's the Instagram post that's posted by the defense of Ukraine, which is defense you at on Twitter. It says, render unto God that which belongs to God, and unto the enemy that witches of the enemy beware enemy, you'll get what the witch wants. Volunteers dressed as witches, sending love to our soldiers in the opposite of our enemy, the opposite to our enemy. Wow. What a interesting choice to post on your website. Okay. That's pretty wild. Now, there is like all of the occultism that's going on, all of the, the, the subtweeting of Satanic rituals and, and all of the elitist propaganda that's coming out, trying to portray people who call this out conspiracy theorists and all of this stuff. It's so unbelievable because of how many times it's been rubbed in our face and how many times it's been proven correct. Right. You look at Epstein, you look at Valencia, you look at all of these situations, all of the, the, the Harvey Weinsteins, the, the Bill Clinton, uh, logs to the White House with Epstein there, all of the ties, all of them. And, and it's literally just shoved in your face. And if you deny that there's a, a theme amongst ultra billionaire, rich, elite social groups and sat. Rituals and pedophilia at this point. You are just so naive. It's unbelievable, and you should likely do a lot of research into it because this is something that, while it's easier not to pay attention to, it's easier to not have to formulate an opinion and talk about consistently. It's not helpful to ignore because what if that was your child, right? What? What if that was your child? Even just talk about the Balenciaga campaign. Even if that was just your child in that photograph, your child now for the rest of their life, the rest of their life is now going to at least personally identify with that being that person that was in that, or other people are gonna notice who they are, right? And I hope those parents of the children in the Balenciaga campaigns sue the absolute. Hell outta Valencia and get as much money as possible for positioning their children in the way that they're taken advantage of for these sexualized Satanic ad campaigns. So who would've thought that Zelensky would've hired the same person that was in charge of the Valencia ad campaigns to run a refugee charity, which involved children? That just seems like the literal, worst idea in the world. And, and again, it just talks about the strings that are tied between everything that is going on and these very high up societal, political things that are going on, and it should terrify you. So the next thing, now this, what we're about to discuss is about, uh, Jamal Khashoggi. Now, if you do not know about the situation, it is a atrocity. The man was a journalist. Um, Jamal Khashoggi was a journalist from, uh, I believe Saudi Arabia. Let me go ahead and read it through it here. Um, but I, but I watched this whole documentary on what happened here and what actually occurred. And the reality of it is, is, again, just, just horrifying. So let's, let's actually listen to this. Let's, there's a, a little trailer from the actual movie that I have up here that should explain some of this for you here. So here we. My name is Ha Genius. I am addressing you as a victim. A title forced on me After the brutal murder of my Jamal Jamal Khai, prominent Saudi journalist in Washington Post columnist, has gone missing. After visiting his country's consulate in Istan, he was last entering Saudi Arabia's consulate, taking paperwork to marry his fiance. His fiance saw him go in at 1:00 PM and was still waiting for him at 1:00 AM. Moha, tell me what happened to Mr. Khashoggi Saudi Arabia. Now suddenly there's admitting that Haggi did die. Die Inside that building, Jamal K he's saying that he was killed and, and greeted me. As if I shut the king. We knew that they would try to sweep the whole thing under direct. Is it true that Turkish intelligence obtained audio recordings to show he's murder? I know why Jamal was killed. It's because of me. And here, just so I can read it to you, it says someone may have easily watched everything that went on. So they're talking about there being cameras inside of the building in which he was the consulate in which he was murdered. We've been given orders. He saved some, particularly down in peace of the puzzle, like Saudi body. Double Jamal filled the whole country was against him of this another truth. I said, the best solution is create our own priority. The king firmly denied any knowledge of it. It could have been rogue killers. Who knows? I just received this. Be careful. Move from city to another one and there's a team is going to kill you soon. It's anonymous. He has to be killed in a way that will send message to everyone else because if you kill Jamal is Pepper. Who else you cannot kill? You can't kill everyone. All right, so there's the trailer coming from that movie I highly recommend. You should see it. It's called The Dissident, and I believe I watched it on one of the mainstreaming platforms. So it's called The Dissident, and you should absolutely watch it. It it gives you some really crazy insight to this situation. He was basically went into this consulate and he, he was a high, um, called out the government a lot, fairly consistently for what was going on. I believe I even did a bit of a podcast episode on it. Uh, so I would definitely recommend going back and seeing him when that it was, but The Dissident was a tremendous documentary that outlined this very well, and he went into the consulate and was basically from the evidence that they gathered in this documentary, was beheaded and murdered in front of some type of like webcam where the crown princes. Was allegedly giving orders on what to do and how to kill him. And so this is just to preempt what happened here, because what ended up happening this week, yesterday, I believe, yeah, yesterday, was that the Biden administration backed immunity for Muhammad bin Solomon, who's the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. So the president of the United States called on this man the Crown Prince of Mohamed bin Solomon to gain immunity for doing this. And it came true. A judge dismissed a suit against in connection to Jamal Khashoggi death. The suit was filed by Khashoggi fiance who accused MBS of ordering his death to silence him. Khashoggi was murdered after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October of 2018. The US federal judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit against, uh, Saudi Crown Prince, uh, Mohammad bin Solomon over the brutal murder of Washington Post journalist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. The decision came just weeks after the Biden administration contended with the Saudi ruler, often referred to as MBS should be granted immunity. Judge John Bates, in opinion, said that despite the court's uneasiness and the credible allegations of his involvement in Khashoggi, killing the US has informed the court that he is immune. So MBS is therefore entitled to head of state immunity. Wow. So you can literally get immunity from murdering somebody on outside consulate territory for being a part of a political party in a different country. Ever heard of Crimes against You, man? I mean, this is just ho like what kind of precedence does this set for? And this was a New York, what was it? A New York, um, what was, where was he affiliation? I just said it. New York Times or, or, uh, New York Post. The New York Post journalist. So a, a very well known Washington Post journalist. Um, sorry. And he was murdered horrifically in a consulate and we're just gonna do nothing and even throw out the case based on the, a Biden administration saying that he should not be charged with this. Khashoggi disappeared after visiting the Saudi Consulate in this damn bull in 2018 to obtain documents related to his upcoming marriage. It was later revealed that a group of Saudi Abs agents ambushed him inside the consulate, strangling him before dismembering and disposing of his body. The following month, the CIA concluded that MBS ordered Khashoggi killing. So the CIA literally came out and said that he did this. And then the Biden administration came out and said, nah, we don't care. He's immune. You can literally be head and murder people in any consulate you want, as long as you have enough money in the bank or enough power. Says that a declassified intelligence report released that by the Biden administration last year explicitly implicated MBS and Khashoggi killing. We assessed that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Solomon approved in operation in Istanbul Turkey to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi MBS has denied that he ordered the, uh, Khashoggi killing. The lawsuit was filed two years after Khashoggi death by his fiance, Hadis Singes, and accused MBS of ordering the Saudi journalist's death in order to silence him. So imagine being her, you literally have a husband who speaks up and speaks out against these horrific acts by the Saudi princes, by, by the Saudi government. He goes into a consulate and is literally murdered, beheaded, horrifically, strangled to death. And then the CIA comes out and says that he, the mbs, the crown or the Saudi crown Prince was at fault for this. The CIA said that. And then Biden then grants him immunity. Imagine being that woman and imagine feeling like the whole world is against you. Cause what stops them from just murdering her? Now why would they not do that if they're immune from everything that can go on and every, uh, uh, outcome that, that can be? Why would you not just, you know, murder all of your, your political opponents? What, what type of precedent does this set? Cuz that, that's, that's a terrifying thought. Let's see if there's anything else in here. Um, she tweeted, we thought maybe there would be a light to justice from the usa. Jamal died again today. She said, wow. So, uh, president Biden has faced widespread backlash over his approach to US Saudi relations on the campaign trail. Biden pledged to make the oil rich kingdom a pariah over Khashoggi murder. When he came into office, Biden vowed to recalibrate the relationship between Washington and rta, including by ending US support for the Saudi Lake Coalition. The devastating Yemen war MBS is considered the architect of the war, which has for fostered what's been described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Hmm, interesting. Wow. It literally got away with murder in this case, and it was because of Biden's immunity. So now there's what we got on that front. Now we're going to move into the Twitter files, but before I do that, what I'm gonna do first is ask that you please. Hit that subscribe button. And I would appreciate it so much. All right. Put a lot of work into this and I appreciate your support more than, you know. It really helps to keep me going, so, alright, let's move on. The next thing that we're going to be discussing here is going to be the Twitter files. So this is being, uh, being, this has been called Twitter gate and it is essentially, uh, Elon Musk has come out and released the files, all of the internal documents and communications surrounding Hunter Biden's laptop. Again, if you recall the Washington Post, speaking about the Washington Post released information and released all of the files surrounding Hunter Biden's laptop, calling on the corruption, calling on the weird sexual escapades drug conversations, the, uh, business dealings happening in Ukraine of all places. Who would've thought, uh, in all of these other things that were going on, and China and all of them. So they released that information. Twitter went ahead, and as soon as this started to spread like wildfire, Twitter, shut it down. They made sure that nobody was going to be able to see these, these types of, uh, conversations. They tried to, they literally, like, I'm pretty sure they, they suspended the Washington Post for posting it. It was all under the guise of hacked materials. Even though the laptop was legally obtained, nobody's ever been arrested. Nobody hacked it at all. It was owned by the computer repair shop that Hunter Biden dropped his laptop off that. And so there was all this internal dialogue, all of these internal, you know, emails and things that were going across, uh, different departments within Twitter and Elon released it all, released it all. And there were some really, really interesting things that happened within these conversations. Some things that we will go over and we'll go basically step by step, line by line on every single tweet, um, and just kind of see if there's anything that we see. So this was a released by Matt Taibi, which is at M T A I B B I on Twitter. And Matt Taibi is one of the favorite journalists of many, many people today. He's an independent journalist who has a sub stack, uh, that has a lot of good UpToDate materials, is one of the places where I like to get a lot of my news from. He's a tremendous journalist and was trusted by Elon Musk to release these in a way that was, uh, and he is probably one of the most trusted known journalists today, so it was very smart of them to do that. So it starts by saying thread. Number one, the Twitter files. And I'm going to go ahead and sip this. What is it? Um, French Toast, I forget. It's by founders, uh, French Toast Bastard by Founders. It's a vanilla cinnamon maple beer, which tastes like cinnamon Toast Crunch. It's delicious. So if you see it around you, it's pretty good. Try it out and, oh, I didn't even take a sip. Here we go. Cheers to you. All right, so number one, the thread says the Twitter files, and it just goes line by line. And he goes kind of like sentence by sentence on this. So he says, what you're about to read is the first installment in a series based upon thousands of internal documents obtained by sources at Twitter, the Twitter files tell an incredible story from inside one of the world's largest and most influential social media platforms. It is a Frankenstein tale of a human built mechanism grown out of the control of its designer. Twitter and its conception was a brilliant tool for enabling instant mass communication, making a true, real time global conversation possible for the first time. In an early conception, Twitter was more Twitter, more than lived up to its mission statement, giving people the power to create and share ideas and information instantly without barriers. As time progressed, however, the company was slowly forced to add these barriers. Some of the first tools for controlling speech were designed to combat the likes of spam and financial fraudsters. Slowly over time, Twitter staff and executives began to find more and more uses for these tools. Outsiders began petitioning the company to manipulate speech as well, first a little then more often than constantly. By 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine. One executive would write to another. More to review from the Biden team. The reply would come back handled. So what this is showing here is an email coming from the Biden administration calling on spec, specific tweets, specific tweets for them to be taken down and not handled, not, we've looked into this, not we're gonna check it out and see if it violates our guidelines handled. Now, that's an important distinction in the way that we're looking at this, because handled means I did your bidding, not, I did what was under our guidelines. And I think that's an important call out to make here, is that it's not about them following their own guidelines. Now, I think that in almost every situation, besides maybe the one where Kanye is gonna get punched in the face by Elon. Elon, metaphorically for posting a swastika, which we'll talk about next. Almost all free speech should be allowed in almost all settings, right? And, and even at swastika, you just show that you're a piece of shit by posting it. So maybe people should know that you're a piece of shit, not that, you know, maybe we shouldn't hide your stupidity from everyone. Maybe we should show everybody how dumb you are by allowing it to be up there. But that's a separate conversation. So, um, handled is an important term, not we're gonna look into this, not we're gonna check it out, no handled. We did it, we did it for you because you sent it to us. Now it goes on to say the celebrities and unknowns alike could be removed or reviewed at the behest of a political party. Now this email is, uh, starts off by saying, I grabbed the first one under si deferred to safety on the high profile. Second one, the high profile, second one being real. James Woods, the first one being Stephan Luan. Um, but what that's saying is it wasn't just regular everyday people, it was celebrities too. It goes on to say that both parties had access to these tools. For instance, in 2020 requests from both the Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored. However, the system wasn't balanced. It was based on contacts. Because Twitter was and is overwhelmingly staffed by people of one political orientation. There were more channels, more ways to complain open to the left than the right, and it shows that 99.7% of all contributions to political parties within this company went to the Democratic Party, which is no surprise with it being in Silicon Valley. Then it goes on to say the resulting slant in content moderation decisions is visible through the documents that you were about to read. However, it's also the assessment of multiple current and former high level executives. Now he goes on to say that the Twitter file is part one. How and why Twitter blocked the Hunter Biden laptop story. It says On October 14th, 2020, the New York Post published, gosh, I got it mixed up again. It was the, I thought it was the was. It was the New York Post, not the Washington Post that did it published Biden Secret emails and the expose based on the contents of Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop. Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be unsafe. They then even blocked its transmission via direct message. A tool here to reserved for extreme cases such as child pornography, white House spokesperson, Kayley Mc McNay. Was locked out of her account for tweeting about the story. Prompting a furious letter from Trump campaign staffer Mike Hahn, who see it to at least pretend to care for the next 20. So this email is from one of the heads of the Trump campaign and says Kaylee McNaney has been locked out from her account for simply talking about the New York Post story. All she did was cite the story on firsthand reporting that has been reported by other outlets and not disputed by the Biden campaign. I didn't answer immediately on when and how she will be unblocked. I also don't appreciate how anybody on this team called me regarding the news, how nobody on the team called me regarding this news that you'll be censoring news articles. Like I said, at least pretend to care for the next 20 days. This led to public policy executive Carolyn Strom to send out a polite WTF query. Several employees noted that there was tension between the comms and policy teams who had little less control over moderation and the safety and trust teams. And the email there said, hi team. Are you able to take a look closer here? Thank you. STRs note returned the answer that the laptop story had been removed for violations of the company's hack materials policy. And that's kind of the thing that you see even in these. Emails that they, they knew it was bullshit. They knew the hacked material stuff was bullshit. They didn't, they knew it wasn't gonna stick. They even talked about it. And we'll look at that here in just a second. But they talked about how is this even something that we can legally stand by when? And if it comes to that, because they knew that it was bs. And so they said, oh, it's about the hack materials policy, even though they had no reason to believe that it was hacked materials at all. And here's the next one, says, although several sources recalling hearing about a general warning from federal law enforcement that summer about possible foreign hacks, there's no evidence that I've seen of any government involvement in the laptop story. In fact, that might have been the problem. Now, what is a, what a they're kind of, Matt is discussing here is the fact that CEO of mea, mark Zuckerberg went on Joe Rogan and said that the FBI specifically called on him to. Keep an eye out for Russian disinformation specifically about the Hunter Biden laptop story, if I'm recalling correctly. And so there was a lot of backlash surrounding that. Probably not nearly enough as there should be about the FBI weaponizing its political ties and corporate ties to help sway the election. But nonetheless, they did it. And so this goes on to say, although several sources were called hearing about a general warning, right? Then we just read that the decision was made by the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, but with former legal head of or former head of Legal Policy and trust, Vijaya Gad playing a key role. Now also, if you recall, Vijaya went onto Joe Rogan with. Or I'm with Jack Dorsey. Jack Dorsey went on Joe Rogan, but brought a, the head of legal of his team to discuss this all because she was the one that made these decisions. Right. And everybody's kind of pointed the finger at Jack Dorsey, but a lot of people have come to Jack Dorsey's defense. Apparently a lot of this Jack Dorsey didn't know anything about, which becomes a bigger issue when you're, you know, a large corporation controlling the flow of information and conversation surrounding the whole world, but specifically from the standpoint of one political ideology in one country. Right? That seems to be a big issue here, especially when it comes to the tech world. The tech world is overwhelmed by liberal ideology and not just like your buddy who is a supporter of, uh, democratic belief systems. Uh, the healthcare system and abortion, not just like your but but far left individuals in one of the most liberal places in the world. A an extremist ideology in many senses. Just as much as there is an extremist ideology on the very far. Right. Right. So it's like, I wouldn't want either of those sides to control the political conversations that are happening or even the regular conversations because they're going to want to skew it in the way that benefits their ideology. And that's not a good thing for humanity. There should always be checks and balances, right? There's literally nothing good about the two party system. But if I had to say something good about it is that it balances each other right there. There, there's a checks and balances in the way that half of the country agrees with this, and half of the country agrees with that. And so maybe decisions aren't made as hastily and as once it comes to extreme ideology, you're gonna have a lot of pushback from at least half of the. Right. So anyways, it goes on to say that, uh, quote, they just freelanced it is how one former employee characterized the decision hacking was this excuse. But within a few hours, pretty much everyone realized that that wasn't going to hold, but no one had the guts to reverse it. You can see the confusion in the following length, the exchange, which ends up including GAD and former Trust and Safety Chief UL Roth Comms Official. Trent Kennedy writes, I'm struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe. So he goes into and is a little irritated by this. So let's read the whole thing and it says Trent and Kennedy. I'm struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this unsafe. And I think the best explainability argument for this externally would be that we're waiting to understand if the story is the result of hack materials. We'll face hard questions on this if we don't have some kind of solid reasoning for marking the link Unsafe. Yeah, as you should, right? So, Next, the one says, by this point, everyone knew that this was fucked, says one former employee, quote . But the response was essentially to air on the side of continuing to air. Um, so here it says, this is the email from UL Roth, the policy basis attack materials. Though as discussed, this is an emerging situation where the facts remained unclear. Given the severe risks here in lessons of 2016, we're airing on the side of including a warning in preventing this content from being amplified. Uh, VJA, what is the warning that will come up? You? Well, when you click the link, you'll see the generic unsafe URL message. Not ideal, but it's the one thing that we have. And then Ian said, whatever we do in the coms, this will become a bias claim for Jack pre-hearing immediately. Let's make it clear we're proactively be cautiously interpret, interpreting this through the lens of our hacked materials policy, and allowing the link with the warning and significant reduction of spread. Uh, then this is where the really big question comes up and it comes from the VP of Global Comms and he says to Ian's point, can we truthfully claim that this is a part of the policy as a part of our approach to addressing potentially hacked materials? We are limiting visibility of related stories on Twitter while our investigation is ongoing. Can we actually do this? Like, are we gonna get, is this legal grounds that we don't wanna find ourselves in? Right. And it goes on to say to which former Deputy general counsel, Jim Bak, again, seems to advise staying the, uh, non course because caution is warranted. If fundamental problem with the tech community in content moderation. Many people in charge of speech know care little about speech and have been told, or have been, have to be told the basics by outsiders. And that was coming from Matt Tay. Uh, yeah. It goes on to talk about the Bill of Rights. Somebody calls out, um, that they were worried about, that kind tries to reroute the conversation to the First Amendment mentioned, which is generally hard to find in the files. Uh, and they were concerned about Section two 30, right? Section two 30 was the, um, legislation that was to be passed that would make the companies liable for news that they're spreading or not spreading. Uh, so that starts to frame the conversation a little bit more from their concern. They're not actually concerned with doing something wrong. They're concerned about it coming back on them politically. So within a day, the head of policy lowering Culbertson receives a gly letter from Carl sbo, which had already pulled 12 members of Congress, nine and three, nine Republicans, and three Democrats from the House of Judiciary Committees. And basically none of them were happy about the fact that they curtailed this story. Uh, not choice. Lets Twitter know a blood bath awaits an upcoming hill hearings. Em, uh, with members saying it's a tipping point, complaining tech has grown so big that they can't even regulate themselves. So government may need to intervene. Yeah. You think, uh, it says that when asked just how bad the situation is, one staffer said it's text access Hollywood moment and it has no Hillary to hide behind. Others. Were more blunt tech is screwed and rightfully so. Yeah. So it's like interesting to see that there was actually some conversations going on by employees saying that this isn't right. Right. Um, and then they even literally said that the First Amendment isn't absolutely like Yes. Yes it is. That's how the constitution works. Uh, and this is from SAS's letter containing chilling messages, relaying democratic lawmaker's attitudes. They want more moderation. And as for the Bill of Rights, it's not absolute with said, Uh, so there are multiple instances in the files of Dorsey intervening to question suspensions and other moderation act actions for accounts across the political spectrum. So some people have called this whole thing like, kind of like a nothing situation that it's not gonna have any big, huge public crowd cries. But I think this, if this does nothing but instill trust in Elon Musk's Twitter, that's a good thing, right? If, if he's willing to open up their books and, and open source all of the conversations that were be being had within this company, I think that's a positive thing for Twitter overall. I think that's a powerful thing for, you know, free speech overall. Um, I truly do believe that he did the right thing here and, and, and he didn't have to do this honestly. He, like was the one that called on this to happen. Um, Matt Taibi goes on to say it's been a whirlwind of a 96 hours for me too. There's so much more to come, including answers to questions about issues like shadow banning, boosting follower accounts, the fate of various individual accounts and more. These issues are not limited to the political right, and he says goodnight. Um, so there is a part two to this, which came up yesterday, and this is supplemental Twitter files. It says on Friday the first installment of Twitter files was published. Here we expect to publish more over the weekend. Many wondered why there was a delay. We can now tell you part of the reason why on Tuesday, Twitter, deputy General Counsel and former FBI General counsel, Jim Baker, was fired. Wow. Among the reasons, fighting the first batch of Twitter files without knowledge of new. The process for producing the Twitter files involve delivery to two journalists, Barry Weiss and me, via a lawyer close to new management. However, after the initial batch, things came, became complicated over the way. Over the weekend while we both dealt with obstacles to new searches, it was Barry Weiss who discovered that the person in charge of releasing the files was someone named Jim. When she called to ask Jim's last name, the answer came back. Jim Baker, my jaw. Hit the floor. It says Weiss. The first batch of files both, uh, both, both reporters received was Mark Spectra Baker emails. Uh, and then it goes on to say that, let's see if we can go back. Bakker is a controversial figure. He was spend something of a zeek of FBI controversies dating back to 2006 from the Steele dossier to the Alpha Server mess. He resigned in 2018 after an investigation into the. To the press the news that B was reviewing the Twitter files surprised everyone involved to say the least. New Twitter Chief Elon Musk acted quickly to exit Baker Tuesday. Reporters assumed searches through the Twitter files material. Oh, reporters resumed searches through the Twitter file materials. A lot of it today, the next installment will appear, uh uh, through Barry Weiss. Stay tuned. Now let's see if Barry Weiss has posted it, but it does not seem to be, so, yeah. All right. So yeah, and then that's the, that's the thing with this is like some people are like, oh, why are we still care? Like, right. The rights obsession with Hunter Biden was an article that I saw in Weis, right, is like the weird obsession with Hunter Biden. You know, the son of the current president of the United States who did shady business deals, peddling his father's influence to foreign countries and adversaries for profit. Along with what seemed to be sexual or exploitation of prostitutes, an ungodly amount of crack cocaine being consumed through a meth pipe. , uh, what else? Um, underage girls in, in foreign countries allegedly, uh, tear, terrible, disgusting pictures of him naked. Uh, all of these things, like why wouldn't people, the fact that people still aren't talking about that is more wild than the fact that people are, and the fact that it was like completely shut down, like they. Achieved what they wanted to. They, they, they exceeded all expectations on this by going ahead and making sure that nobody got to really see this. It didn't become a public conversation that changed much of anything. Everybody knows about this, but nobody's talking about it. I've done multiple, multiple deep dives into the Hunger Biden laptop. Uh, one episode specifically was a deep, deep dive into it. The emails, the pictures, the, uh, drugs, the prostitution, his dad, all of this stuff, even the Diary of Ashley, all of that stuff. I've done a whole podcast on it. So go back and listen to that. It's so wild. If you need to refresh your memory on how fucking crazy that whole thing was, go back and listen to that podcast because it, it is just mind boggling that this is not a more consistent conversation and that people aren't still freaking out about it. And I'm glad, again, I'm glad this is a consistent, now bringing this back up, but. It's still concerning, right? That it, that it has not changed anything. Hunter Biden's still out there walking. He, he hasn't been charged with, with Ping his father's influence Hunter. But Joe Biden's still the president of the United States, even though he was doing shady business deals with Ukrainian energy companies, two years before they were inverted by Russia. Shady business deals with China, right? You remember the China Joe, China Joe, like, I need to work on my Donald Trump. But, uh, but you remember all that, right? But if you don't, and if you need a refresher, go back and listen to that podcast, uh, because it is, it, it, it's truly should be a far bigger conversation than it actually has been. All right. Um, let's see if there's anything else that are here for us. Okay. Let's move on to. Um, and this is going to be the, that Elon Musk. Since this happened, since releasing these articles and releasing all of the communications through Twitter, Elon Musk says that he is at risk of being assassinated, assassinated as a result of everything that's been going on. So, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has declared his risk of assassination is quite significant in a ranging, uh, new chat. So let's see if we can maybe get some audio on this and give you guys a little bit of this, this story here. And here we come on. It's loading. Go. The risk of something bad happening to me of even literally being shot is quite, uh, sign. I'm definitely not gonna be, you know, doing any open air car parades, any open air car parades. What is he alluding there to? Hmm. Right. Maybe the, the, the JFK assassination. Right. Uh, wow, that's, that's a cool, a good little, uh, sub sub conversation subtweet, if I may, surrounding that , uh, Elon Musk has claimed that his risk of assassination is quite significant and the ranging, uh, two hour q and a audio chat on Twitter spaces, the social media platform CEO told listeners he definitely would not be doing any open air car parades. Let me put it that way. Frankly, the risk of something bad happen to me, or even leg or even literally being shot is quite significant. It's not that hard to kill somebody if you wanted to. So hopefully they don't. And fate smiles upon the situation with me, and it does not happen. There's definitely some risk there. The Tesla CEO in world's richest man, they self-proclaimed free speech, absolute added that at the end of the day, we just want to have a future where we're not oppressed. Yeah, that's a good future. Um, our speech is not suppressed, and we can say that what we want to say without fear of appraisal, he declared, as long as you're not really causing harm to somebody, Then you should be able to say what you want. This attitude has been clear since Must take over of Twitter last month. He has reinstated previously suspended accounts, including former President Donald Trump, and announced he would grant a general amnesty that everyone who has been booted off that had not been broken a law or engaged in spam must also ended Twitter's policy against Covid 19 misinformation and dismantled the company's trust and safety teams amid mass layoffs. Much of must conversation on Twitter spaces, which took place on Saturday night. Local time was devoted to the so-called Twitter files, a selection of internal documents released by journalist Matt Taibbi on Friday. Taibbi threat included files that showed Joe Biden's team instructing Twitter employees to remove specific Twitter political content in October, 2020, just weeks before he was elected president. Wow. Goes on to say that if Twitter was doing one team's bidding before an election, shutting down dissenting voices on a pivotal election, that is the definition of election interference. Musk, who has been highly critical of the platforms prior management, said, frankly, Twitter was acting like an arm of the Democratic National Committee. It was absurd. Musk had give, uh, said he had given Taibi as well as journalist Barry Weiss, unfettered access to old internal documents. Teasing more would be released and dubbing them the Twitter files, episode two. Wow. So that's interesting and that, that's something to be sad about, that like, there's always this talk about like assassination and in rightfully so, right, you have situations like, you know, the whole Epstein thing being an actual term used for the government wanting to, I don't know, kill you. Uh, And, and, you know, being in the space that I'm in, I've had some funny little messages before surrounding this type of thing for speaking about the things I speak about even. And I'm just a little guy here, not doing anything wrong, just giving my opinion on stuff, , but don't kill me. Um, but, uh, it is interesting and I like the way that he puts it, right? It, it is fairly easy to have somebody killed, he says. But I hope fate smiles upon me. . I love, I like that quote a lot. I almost should make a t-shirt out of that one. Uh, so the next part of the Elon Musk files is that after, uh, after this whole release of the Twitter files, Musk's neural link is under investigation. Over potential animal welfare violations, and this happened immediately after the Twitter files. Twitter files were released. Who would've thought the probe comes amid staff complaints about the company's animal testing being rushed. Elon Musk medical device company, Neurolink, is facing a federal probe in employee backlash and make claims of rushed animal testing causing needless suffering in deaths. Neurolink Corp is working on developing a brain implant. Hopes will curate range of neurological conditions including paralysis and Alzheimer's. According to the document seen by Reuters and interviews with staff, Neurolink employees have complained that pressure from CEO to speed up research has led to botch tests in unnecessary animal deaths. The recently launched federal investigation is focused on violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which governs how people or how animals are treated in research facilities. Now, what is the likelihood that two days after Elon Musk releases all of the files showing that Twitter was literally an extension of the Democratic National Party? To stifle dissenting voices. What are the odds that immediately following that Neurolink, all of the sudden has a federal probe into it? Right? And you even have the, uh, the White House Press Secretary calling, you know, people asking her if what their thoughts are on the Twitter, uh, gate Pro, uh, Twitter gate files and everything like that. And, uh, she kind of just stops the conversation. Doesn't say anything, circles back to it, right? As you would expect in the whole situation. So not much to be talked about there. And then Elon Musk also said that he personally wanted to punch Kanye West after the rapper posted a swastika on Twitter. I've already talked about that. I've already touched on it, so I'm not gonna do it much further. But yeah, maybe don't promote Nazis. That's not a good thing. Uh, and Kanye West got suspended again after doing all of that, right? After getting a good portion of society. Like there was a decent size rally cry around Kanye West, calling out the Jewish entertainment elites and the owners of multimedia companies in Disney and all of these, you know, large entertainment organizations and news media companies. There was a decent rally around it briefly until he went off the rails. Now, now again, I would like to go listen to the interview with Alex Jones. I will at some point and I'll update you guys on it cuz I want the context, right? Everything can be taken out of context. I really don't see how saying you love Hitler can be taken out of context. I, I, I don't exactly see how that one can be cured. Um, so again, off the Kanye train, not, uh, not something I support. So on that note, thank you guys for listening. I appreciate you so much. And. This week Anna is joined by PDSA Vet Sean Wensley chatting about his book Through A Vet's Eyes. As a candid exploration of how we live with animals in the modern world, Sean explains why we mustn't lose touch with nature and all animals in the natural world. They offer stark contrast to our farm animals and pets being kept in captivity. We discuss the importance to understand the Five Domains: Nutrition, Behaviour, Physical health, the Environment, and the Mental Health of all animals. In the wild animals these domains are provided naturally through survival, but Sean argues we can all do better to ensure the well-being of all animals in our care. He chats openly about his experiences as a bird watcher noticing how captive birds display behaviours that indicate stress, unhappiness and boredom. We talk about why play with dogs and cats is better than food as a way of engaging them and tapping into their natural instincts. We talk a lot about farming and how our perceptions of food, and meat have changed in the past few decades. How consumers can drive change creating a demand for ethical rearing and practices; about understanding the natural collaboration between animals and humans, and why we could all do better especially under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, itself a radical step change, the details of which are often misinterpreted, overlooked, or ignored. We also chat about Government and the new Sentience and Kept Animals Bill that still awaits its airing date. Going after a beloved and well financed figure, like Jack Hanna means we will have to prove our beliefs beyond a shadow of a doubt, not only to avoid a slander lawsuit, but also in order to not turn ignorant animal lovers against us when we reveal that their childhood hero was one of the most influential characters in the war against protecting wildcats from being used as pets, props and parts. I think this film will have the Blackfish effect on the cub petting industry and no one will be able to justify ripping cubs from their moms to use this way any more. I searched my hard drive for an image of Jack and found this 2000 photo of him and Diana McCourt. Here is the story I wrote after we rescued 4 tigers and 2 lions from her in 2007: It took the combined efforts of USDA, undercover agents and concerned citizens seven years to shut down Diana McCourt (aka Cziraky) and her Siberian Tiger Foundation. It wasn't until her landlords, Donnalynn and Christian Laver were able to evict her from the property that Knox County was able to seize the six cats who had been used for years as props in Diana McCourt's “tiger training” scheme. By the end of the ordeal eye witnesses said that the cats were starving and they still have inadequate shelter from the elements. Even though McCourt lost her USDA license to operate the tiger-tamer camp in 2000, and permanently in 2006, she still continued to charge people to come into her back yard in Gambier, OH and pet the adult lions and tigers. The cats would often be chained down so that people could touch them or have their photos made with the cats. To make the cats more pliable McCourt had their teeth and claws removed. (Joseph still has his canine teeth) Despite the abusive violations to their bodies and mobility, the USDA investigation included eight allegations of attacks on visitors in an 8 month period. Most cases that 6 years or more to prosecute so animals suffer most or all of their lives waiting for help to arrive. The only way to put an end to the suffering is to end the private possession of big cats and eliminate the USDA loophole that allows people to keep big cats if they have a $40 USDA license. It is too easy to get and too hard to lose to provide any sort of enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. Content Warning: Animal abuseThis week on Get Out Alive, we cover a tragic day in October of 2011 that led to the death of over 40 exotic animals in Zanesville, Ohio, that had been kept in terrible conditions. This case led to Ohio changing its laws around exotic animal ownership, and sparked a countrywide debate about owning exotic animals, that was of course later blown up by Netflix's Tiger King in 2020. If you'd like to know more about how USDA APHIS Animal Care inspects and regulates these facilities, you can check out their Inspection Guide or Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations. You can also file an animal welfare complaint here. Shaquille O'Neil Supporting Cub Abuse? We asked XX to look into how we can best approach Shaq to convince him it will destroy his brand to be part of Jeff Lowe's new version of the GW Zoo. The last thing big cats need is for someone as prominent as Shaq, with his 13-million plus online followers, to be openly endorsing cub-petting, roadside zoos, or "pet" tigers. And even worse is that Shaq has deep ties with many major celebrities, corporations, and media companies, and he seems to be leveraging that into promoting Lowe's scheme. Since Shaq was brought onboard, Lowe appears to be getting much more business and publicity, with Shaq being filmed at the zoo for an upcoming episode of a "very popular TV show", news outlets running stories about his visits, and rumors that "one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country" has booked his tiger cubs for photo shoots (Lowe is being very cryptic about that last one to avoid protests). I believe Shaq was involved in the ‘90s with David McMillan of Tiger's Eye Productions in Oviedo, FL. (I'm pretty sure west coast tiger exploiter Brian McMillan is David's brother. Brian trained under Gunther Geble-Williams at Ringling and has many Gunther stories, including that he was a horse training genius. Brian, now retired, also owned and ran an animal film rental business which he has since passed on to an East Coast guy he trained.) One of Shaq's shoes was displayed on the mantle in David's home and he said Shaq was a friend and frequent visitor to his tiger training camp. The only legal trouble I ever had with USDA was when I went on camera as a rebuttal witness to USDA's position that beating a lion, in a transport wagon, with a baseball bat was "standard training procedures" and thus not a violation of the Animal Welfare Act. That landed me in court facing a bunch of bogus allegations, which were all thrown out and the case dismissed. Even though he has a long history of bad judgment when it comes to captive big cats, I think we can apply enough pressure to put an end to it. In this video Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar provides his takes on one of the most prominent initiatives towards transhumanism is Neuralink co-founded by Elon Musk. Neuralink is a neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain–machine interfaces. In the initial years, it aimed at making devices that could treat serious brain diseases in the short-term. In 2021, monkey was shown to be playing the game & Pong& using the Neuralink implant. Even as it builds momentum, there are glaring questions that still remain to be addressed. Earlier this year, nine violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act that ensures the wellbeing of animals in animal experiments were reported. Musk's words on how we coexist with advanced AI, achieving some AI symbiosis, are vague at best. This week I sat down with Professor Delcianna J. Winders, Professor and Animal Law and Policy Institute Director at the Vermont Law School. Professor Winders is a total rock star in the exploding area of animal law. Prior to joining the Vermont Law School faculty and founding the Animal Law and Policy Institute, Professor Winders was on the faculty of Lewis & Clark Law School. She previously served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation, was the first Academic Fellow of the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program, and a visiting scholar at the Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University. We touch on just a few of the many fascinating issues included under the broad umbrella of animal law, including Professor Winders' judicial successes involving the Animal Welfare Act, her thoughts on alternatives to animal testing, how the concept of one health intersects with animal law, the role of restorative justice in animal and chemical law, and much more. Kate Briquelet 12.26.17 12:00 AM ET One day in October, Randy Stearns walked out to a Florida campfire, dressed in a fringed leather top like a modern-day Davy Crockett. “Hello, friends, Randy the Tiger Man,” the animal trainer greeted the camera, which was set between a teepee and totem pole out in the woods near his family's Dade City zoo. “You can't believe a damn thing you see on the news,” the 34-year-old declared in the filmed fireside chat posted on Facebook. “Just look at me. I'm the newest Charlie Sheen. Every time you go on, there's something on about us, the park…” Then Stearns took aim at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—a constant topic in The Tiger Man's online videos. “Kind of like Rambo, they drew first blood,” Stearns said. “We had to go out there, defend ourselves.” Just two months before, the wannabe Jack Hanna stood guard at the zoo's gates with a holstered weapon, joining supporters flaunting neon “PETA Kills” T-shirts. They were protesting, and allegedly delaying, a court-ordered inspection of the private, unaccredited zoo's collection of adult and baby tigers. Stearns and his parents run Dade City's Wild Things (DCWT), a 22-acre zoo about 44 miles northeast of Tampa. The attraction has more than 300 animals: jaguars, lions, bears, lemurs, macaques, porcupines, bearded dragons, and other reptiles. But it's known for baby tigers, deployed for photo-ops and swim sessions in the zoo's chlorinated pool. In years past, the cubs appeared on Good Morning America and Fox & Friends for the seemingly adorable gimmick. Yet behind the footage, there's allegedly a darker side to the tiger business, according to animal-welfare advocates—one that prematurely rips cubs away from their mothers and forces them into stressful encounters with humans for profit. According to PETA, Dade City's Wild Things is contributing to a captive tiger overpopulation crisis by continually breeding them for photo-ops and ticket sales. Once cubs grow too large for customer interactions, they're left to languish for the rest of their days in cages, or sold off to other roadside attractions and collectors of exotic animals, PETA says. The big cats are at the center of separate lawsuits brought by PETA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which respectively allege the zoo violated the Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act over its handling of the tigers. The zoo also faces a state lawsuit for allegedly accepting donations while not registered as a nonprofit. Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services claims the zoo used hundreds of thousands in charity funds to foot the bills for Randy Stearns' nuptials and the bankruptcy payments of his mother, Kathy. The fate of 3,000 beagles bred for experimentation is in doubt as this podcast reaches the public. Envigo, a multi-million dollar supplier of dogs for lab experimentation worldwide, is accused of violations under the Animal Welfare Act after a PETA undercover investigation exposed horrible conditions at Envigo's Virginia facility. The Department of Justice has sought to close down the facility. But Envigo wants to sell off its remaining 3,000 dogs to labs for experimentation first. Daphna Nachminovich, PETA Sr. VP for Animal Cruelty explains why that's unacceptable. She wants animal lovers to join PETA in forcing Envigo to give up all the dogs to safe and caring homes. They've petitioned state courts for a writ of Habeas Corpus; a legal maneuver that, if granted, would declare Happy a legal person who deserves to be freed. Tony the Truckstop Tiger still being fought for. Big Cat Rescue was the first organization ever to hire a lawyer to represent a tiger. We were not successful, but ALDF took up the fight and won't give up. A Truck Stop is No Place for a Tiger! Why We Won't Stop Fighting for Tony At this moment a 16-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger named Tony is caged at a gas station truck stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana, 20 miles outside of Baton Rouge. Confined to a cramped metal cage, Tony breathes in diesel fumes daily while passersby tease and harass him. Tony has lived this way for nearly his entire life, and his circumstances are often a shock to the average person, who feels innately that this is not the right place for a tiger, especially an aging one with neglected veterinary needs. People ask, “how can this be legal?” and the Animal Legal Defense Fund believes firmly that it's not. In fact, we've been fighting for over six years to have Tony relocated to a sanctuary that can meet his complex needs and give him the veterinary care he is entitled to. Our campaign to save Tony is now even more dire after reports raising concerns about Tony's health. Let Tony Live the Rest of His Days in Comfort All across the world, people follow Tony's story. Recently, we've received many reports from worried citizens stating that Tony appears lethargic and is experiencing diarrhea and a decreased appetite. The Animal Legal Defense Fund obtained photo and video evidence and enlisted the help of a veterinarian with experience treating exotic animals to review it. In the vet's expert opinion, Tony is likely suffering from kyphosis of the spine and an injury or other condition that is causing him to limp. This isn't run-of-the-mill aging; Tony needs help. Living at a truck stop is, at the least, exacerbating Tony's poor health. While no animal is suited to living at a truck stop, tigers are particularly ill-equipped because of their sharp sense of smell and sensitive hearing. Independent of all our pending legal work to free Tony, the Animal Legal Defense Fund just submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which licenses the Truck Stop under the federal Animal Welfare Act, urging that Tony be inspected by a licensed specialist and given any necessary veterinary care. The Legal Battle for Tony's Safety We believe that Tony, and all big cats held in captivity, deserve to live in environments that meet their psychological and physical needs. Our campaign to remove Tony from his particularly grim captivity at Tiger Truck Stop has been lengthy and determined. Michael Sandlin, the owner of the truck stop, however, has pulled out all the stops to keep Tony in captivity. He has spent over $750,000 fighting our efforts and has also manipulated the legislative system by successfully lobbying the Louisiana legislature to pass a special exemption designed solely to benefit Sandlin and allow him to keep Tony. It's no surprise that Sandlin puts up such a fight; he's been exploiting tigers like Tony for decades, using them as a gimmick to lure customers to his gas station. The USDA has cited Sandlin numerous times for violations ranging from failure to provide veterinary care to lack of clean drinking water. In 2003, Sandlin relinquished three tigers amid public outrage over his treatment of the big cats. Only Tony remains. We're Not Giving Up The Animal Legal Defense Fund recently combined its challenges to both of Sandlin's legal tactics into the same action, filing an amended petition in intervention in Sandlin's lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of the big cat ban. This will allow the Animal Legal Defense Fund — in one motion — to raise arguments both challenging the constitutionality of Act 697's exemption for Tony and explain why Sandlin's challenges to the big cat ban itself should fail. A ruling in favor of the Animal Legal Defense Fund on such a motion should finally put an end to Sandlin's legal tactics and provide a final resolution allowing Tony to be relocated to sanctuary. As the world watches the ups and downs of the fight to save Tony, the tiger's life remains essentially the same. He doesn't know his story inspired a former Representative to come out of retirement to fight for him, or that the big cat ban will help others of his kind. All he knows is life in a cramped cage off the highway. Tony deserves the veterinary care he needs and to live out the rest of his life in peace. He doesn't just deserve it, we believe he's guaranteed it under the law. We won't stop until Tony is safe. Washington Post: Many countries ban circuses with wild animals. These lawmakers want the U.S. to follow suit. Mexico, Peru and several other Latin American countries have banned or restricted the use of animals in traveling circuses in recent years. Performing animals are even rarer in Europe, where many nations prohibit them. There is no such federal law in the United States. But dozens of local bans, as well as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's recent decision to fold its tent, have some lawmakers hoping the American political terrain might now be fertile enough to send all circus elephants, tigers and bears to retirement. U.S. Reps. Ryan Costello (R-Penn.) and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) appeared on Capitol Hill this week to introduce a bill that would prohibit wild or exotic animal performances in traveling circuses. Flanked by television actors Jorja Fox and Eric Szmanda, the representatives argued that the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act — known by the unwieldy acronym TEAPSPA — would end the suffering of creatures that profit-motivated humans force to perform unnatural behaviors and live in cramped conditions. “I don't think that those practices have any place in the fabric of our society,” said Costello, who added that his constituents are keenly interested in animal welfare issues. [One problem with shutting down the circus: Where will the animals go?] The question is whether they and lots of other Americans are interested enough to push for a nationwide ban on circus animals. The bill is only the latest iteration of a proposal that's been introduced in Congress several times before but has never gotten far. Also at the Hill event was former U.S. representative Jim Moran of Virginia, who noted that he was “sorry” it had never passed before but said the idea “did make some inroads.” There's little question that public sentiment about performing and captive animals, particularly those considered highly intelligent, is changing. The Ringling Bros. announcement in January, which cited a decline in ticket sales, came after local laws and pressure from animal protection groups prompted the show to retire its elephants. Last year, SeaWorld decided to stop breeding orcas, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore is planning to move its dolphins to a sanctuary. And animal welfare issues, as Costello suggested, have far more bipartisan support than many topics under consideration in Washington. [Ringling's elephants are retiring. Will their lives be better?] What's more, backers of the bill say, the Trump administration's zeal for cost-cutting could work in their favor. Circuses with animals are subject to federal inspection under the Animal Welfare Act. Retiring the animals would therefore reduce spending on inspections, making it a “win-win” for the government and for the creatures, said Jan Creamer, president of Animal Defenders International, whose campaigns helped drive the Latin America bans. “There's an immediate budget cut,” Creamer said. She said a ban would affect 19 traveling circuses with about 300 animals. A trainer moves a dromedary during a show at the Cedeno Hermanos Circus in Mexico City in 2015, before a ban in that nation took effect. (Henry Romero/Reuters) But there's also an anti-regulatory zeal these days in Washington, and many lawmakers are loathe to dole out sweeping new restrictions to industries — and that includes circuses. One opponent of TEAPSPA is the Cavalry Group, an advocacy group for “animal enterprise,” which last year said the idea “would deprive countless Americans the ability to experience endangered animals up close, such as elephants and tigers.” The company that runs Ringling Bros., of course, has also lobbied against the bill in the past. Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Feld Entertainment, indicated it would no longer be a priority now that the circus is closing. But, he said, it remains a bad idea premised on inaccurate information about how circus animals are trained and cared for. “This is clearly driven by animal rights groups, rather than being based in any factual information or talking to people who work with exotic animals,” Payne said. “There are exceptions for film, television, advertising and rodeos. This is clearly driven by these organizations who are targeting circuses.” Moran and Creamer, for their part, seemed to acknowledge that the idea is not very likely to sail through Congress, though Moran said a lot of “grass-roots activity” would help. In other words: Public pressure — plus a plethora of competing entertainment options — helped bring an end to the 146-year-old Ringling circus, and it would probably take a whole lot of public pressure on lawmakers to lead to a national ban. Creamer seemed unfazed. Bills her organization has pushed in other countries have gone through “three, four or more evolutions,” she said. The political landscape, she added, “does need to evolve.” Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. When laboratories transport monkeys into the U.S. and throughout the country, every movement must be documented by a veterinary inspection. PETA found it's not being done in dozens of cases involving nearly 2,000 monkeys. These illegal shipments represent a public health risk as monkeys can pass such diseases as tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and Herpes B to humans. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA scientist, talks to Emil Guillermo about how PETA is asking the USDA to suspend and fine research facilities for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Dr. Jones-Engel talks about how awareness was raised after a van carrying monkeys crashed in Danville, Pennsylvania in January this year. And she says how this wouldn't be an issue if researchers simply stopped wasteful, useless and cruel experimentation on animals. Go to PETA.org for more on the illegal shipments of monkeys. PETA sues Dade City's Wild Things I am very happy to get this email today: Subject: DCWT ESA suit is filed Attached please find the file stamped copy of the ESA lawsuit against DCWT (filed today). Thanks, everyone, for your efforts on this. PETA Foundation The basis of the complaint is that using tiger cubs for handling is a violation of the Animal Welfare Act and Endangered Species Act that prohibits “take” and “harassment”. If they win, this will be groundbreaking and will put an end to the use of the endangered species that are currently mis handled this way. If only we had been successful at CITES in getting the lions uplifted to protect them too. Live recordings made at a protest outside the Houses of Parliament on the 7th of February 2022. The protest took place (to a background of thunderous and emotionally-charged chants from the tireless Sol and Helen of Camp Beagle) before a debate in the Commons, triggered by a petition asking for laboratory animals to be included in the Animal Welfare Act which gathered over 100k signatures before it closed in January. Vivisection, animal testing, confining animals to laboratories and experimenting on them is nothing new of course. Protests have been going on for decades. Perhaps the most visible protest at the moment though is the campaign targeting Marshall Bio Resources which supply beagle puppies for experimentation from the awful MBR Acres puppy mill near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. The #FreetheMBR Beagles campaign and Camp Beagle which is set up outside the gates of MBR Acres have put the spotlight on breeding a sweet-natured, curious, and trusting breed of dog for use in a laboratory.Charlie visited the Camp and recorded activists there in November last year, and that explains why for this recording he gravitated towards - in particular - Polly, one of the founders of Camp Beagle and Sammi, one of the Camp Beagle stalwarts he spoke with on that previous visit. I'm thankful that government agencies do anything, although it isn't much. I sent the following to USDA and the FWC on 6/25/16 along with screen shots of the conversation Gloria had on her Facebook wall to back it up: According to Gloria Johnson's Facebook page, she appears to have imported a 5 week old bobcat kitten from Lynn Culver across state lines. https://www.facebook.com/gloria.johnson.167527?fref=nf Does she have a license and proper facilities to house a bobcat? Did she obtain a proper import permit? How can a bobcat kitten, who is too young for their shots, be transported into Florida? It was my understanding that she lost her tigers due to being unable to provide proper care and housing. A bobcat is smaller, but needs far more than the confines of her home. They never seem to take any action on complaints, so I didn't expect a call back, but I got one from xxx last week. He said Gloria did not have a license to possess bobcats, that she did not obtain a legal import permit to bring the bobcat into the state and that the fact that the kitten has not gotten his shots yet wasn't their problem but that USDA was looking into that. “So, what are you going to do?” I asked. “Gloria has the proper facilities, so she can apply for a Class II license to keep the bobcat.” “Where will the bobcat go until that is done?” I pressed. “It's staying with her,” he said sheepishly and then tried to say it was the inspector's discretion to do so. I don't want the bobcat, as that is another 20 year commitment for us, but I'm sure the kitten won't live long with someone I believe to be a drug addict. The USDA hasn't, and won't respond to me about the bobcat, but at least they are finally taking some action on a 70 page briefing we gave them in 2012 on why it is already a violation of the Animal Welfare Act to pull cubs and use them as pay to play props. Slow progress, but progress nonetheless. I'm thankful that my parents are as sharp as they are and that they take so much of the day to day burdens off me so I can focus on ending the trade in exotic cats. Sometimes, my mother's flakiness worries me, but for the most part she's sharp and both are extremely hard working. I keep thinking that my father's immobility will make it impossible for him to work, which would kill him, but every day I see him filling in different rolls that I would not expect. He's adaptive, like a cat. I'm glad my brother was so well loved as a police officer. In that role he met a highway planner named Gareth Klotz, who was tasked with lighting an intersection in Florida Panther territory at SR 29 @ I-75. The Feds mandated that all intersections be lit, but the “state” was pushing back and saying that you can't light the roads in FL panther habitat or it will kill the cats. Klotz asked Chuck for a meeting with me, but this is really Jamie's domain so I brought her. Jamie was prepared for the meeting and brought a list of Florida panther deaths in 2016, along with where they happened. As we were looking at the maps Jamie said, “It would be interesting to know if the locations where Florida panthers were killed by cars were lit or not.” She and Garrett mused over whether or not the information, from the accident reports, and the access to google earth, would yield that information. Garrett needed our final report by tomorrow, but Jamie got right on it last week and on Thursday we sent him our letter. He tweaked it and submitted it as follows: Cumber and Fair has added “Big Cat Rescue” CEO Carole Baskin and President Jamie Murdock to provide specific evaluation on the proposed lighting effects on the panthers and preserve area. Carole and Jamie bring to our team 38 years and 24 years' experience, respectively, with the behavioral nature of exotic cat species, as well as the rehabilitation and release of native Florida bobcats as licensed wildlife rehabbers. Jamie and Carole own and operate the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, in which they rehab and maintain 80+ lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars and other species and are the main call center for wild cat rescue and rehab within the Florida Region. Jamie has spent the last 11 years studying wild bobcat populations and species habits via non-invasive camera traps. In review the project limits, as they are familiar with this preserve area, both Carole and Jamie support the installation of lighting at the referenced intersection and believe that the lights will do no harm to the neighboring Florida panther population; but rather will help protect this imperiled species. Jamie has conducted preliminary in depth research which identified a staggering number of Florida panther deaths have occurred not only on roadways, but more specifically, “primarily on unlit roadways”. 48 Florida panthers, of the estimated population of 100-180, have perished between 7/5/15-7/7/16 . Of these 48 deaths, 38 were as a result of collision with a vehicle. 32 of these vehicular deaths occurred on roadways that had no lighting at all. 6 of these vehicular deaths occurred on roadways with various lighting, however, 2 of these 6 reports did not list an exact location; only a general area, so both could have quite possibly occurred on parts of the roadways that did not have lighting. As mentioned above, Carole and Jamie agree that the proposed lighting should have no negative impacts on the Florida panther, but rather might very well protect the species from future loss of life in this prime panther territory surrounding the SR 29 @ Alligator Alley Interchange. One reason is that drivers will have better visibility and may avoid collisions. The other is that the Florida panthers will have a better opportunity to see approaching vehicles, rather than just headlights that may not signify the size of the threat. Regards, Gareth M. Snow Leopard Letter to the Editor kvalnews, Cat In this story: bandon-animal-park-welcomes-endangered-snow-leopard-as-its-newest-addition your reporter Jessica Waite, did a fluff piece that promotes cub petting which is currently under USDA review for a rule change due to the fact that the only way these backyard breeders and roadside zoos can use cubs is to pull them from their mothers when they are only hours or days old. More about all of the abuse that entails at bigcatrescue.org/cubs But the bigger story might be how West Coast Game Park Safari got their hands on a $10,000 snow leopard cub? If you contact Oregon's Dept. of Natural Resources, or Fish and Game Dept. to ask to see the USDA import permit for such a rare and thus expensive cat, I'm pretty sure you will see the cat originated in California, Florida or Nevada as there are no known snow leopard breeders in Oregon. It's my understanding that an endangered species, like a snow leopard must have approval by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to be transported across state lines. The requirement for issuance of a Captive Bred Wildlife Permit and transfer is supposed to be predicated on that activity enhancing the species in the wild. Using a cub for pay to play sessions is NOT conservation. Given the young age of the cub, it is apparent that the breeder had to have broken this new USDA mandate of leaving the cub with their mother for at least the first four weeks. Any cub left with their mother that long would not allow humans to chain them and pass them around as if they were toys. 4/3/2016 USDA cracks down on abuse of cubs under the age of four weeks. In response to a 2012 legal petition filed by The Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund, Detroit Zoological Society, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Born Free USA, Big Cat Rescue, Fund for Animals and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued guidance making clear that exhibitors violate the Animal Welfare Act by allowing members of the public to handle or feed infant exotic cats like tigers, lions, cheetahs, jaguars or leopards. Read more http://bigcatrescue.org/usda-announces-partial-cub-petting-ban/ Every year they have plenty of cubs to pimp out, but then they disappear. Cubs are only valuable until they are about 12 weeks old and too old, by USDA guidelines, for public petting. Where do all of those cubs go? Legitimate sanctuaries don't take cubs off the hands of abusers, just to allow them to continue the abuse. Please follow up this fluff piece with a real story about how this sort of thing is happening, despite laws and rules to the contrary. My guess is that you will see Donation checked on the USDA form and no one gives away snow leopards. Love letter to Jamie I've never had a clue how to express it to you, but I love you beyond what words can say. I just wrote the following on Little Feather's tribute page: Regrets. I knew I would have them. I've known for 23 years, but now that is mostly what I feel. When Little Feather first arrived and was so sick, I had to carry her in a pouch in my shirt because I still had to work. I had to run a real estate business, care for a husband suffering from Alzheimers, and care for more than 60 other exotic cats who had been rescued from fur farms and taxidermists. Jamie was only 13 and was the most help I had. It would be three more years before my family would join us in this endeavor. I adored Little Feather and wanted so much just to enjoy her kittenhood, to spend time with her, and others, like Windsong, Raindance, Hercules and Catera, but was always being pulled in so many directions that I never had that luxury. I always knew I would regret it. I knew I'd wake up one day and that opportunity would be lost forever. I tried to spend time with each of them, and all of the others that I loved in each and individual ways, but it was never enough. The phone would ring, a text would arrive, some other cat would need assistance and the time was always cut short. Today as I saw Jamie struggling to deal with the loss of a sister, a child to her, a constant in her life for all of her teens and adulthood, I took it to heart that I need to make more time for those I love because I don't want to regret a minute of my life that wasn't spent showing that I love them. Today I wrote up my speech for tomorrow's USDA call What animals should APHIS consider including under the definition of dangerous animals? I believe it is easier to exclude animals from the definition of dangerous animals, when it comes to felids. Because there is no known vaccine against rabies in exotic cats, ALL cat species, other than Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus, should be classified as dangerous animals. Failure to classify them as dangerous, implies that they are not dangerous. The very meaning of the word “dangerous” is: Being able or likely to do harm. Virtually every state requires that exotic cats, of all species, other than domestic cats, be kept caged. That is because they are dangerous, both to humans they may bite, scratch or kill and to the environment. Many states require that domestic cats be vaccinated against rabies and even more require that domestic cats coming into their state be vaccinated first, but there is no known, effective vaccine against rabies in non domestic cats. Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain. Symptoms include: violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms appear, the result is nearly always death. That's a pretty awful death and is easily preventable by classifying all non domestic cats as dangerous, and thus not suitable as pets or pay to play props. As for environmental issues, there isn't a week that goes by, that we don't get a call from someone reporting a cougar in their yard. Usually it is a bobcat, or a HUGE domestic cat that is likely the cast off from the hybrid cat trade. 1st generation hybrids, between domestic cats and wild cats, are often bigger than either parent and never work out as pets. These cats often escape or are released into the environment and then breed with feral cats, causing danger to the public and to the local eco systems who are not designed for these super predators. Back in the 60s and 70s, when the Animal Welfare Act was passed, no one would have dreamed that people would try to make pets out of wild cats, so the antiquated rules have not kept up with protecting wild animals from the abuses they suffer today. I am glad that you are considering rule changes and hope that you will drastically improve the protections afforded wild cats in captivity. The changes you make now will probably have to survive another half century of human evolution, so they should be far more restrictive than you may think necessary for now. Other News Around the Sanctuary Today Last night I got a call from a woman in OR who's been working for Bonnie Ringo for 4 years off and on, and full time since April 1. She relayed a long tale of law breaking and abuse toward her and her family, but I don't have time to write that up now. Suffice it to say that I'm glad the bad guys use my name all the time because when they alienated their staff, they always know to come to me. I'm thankful that my mother is lucid enough to still handle as much as she does. Today she and I set aside time to call my credit card company to find out why my card is frozen. I'd asked my mother to send a $5000 payment, when I learned a month ago that we had not gotten the April bill in the mail. When my card froze again, I thought maybe she hadn't paid a bill, or had lost a bill, but today the credit card company said that I was over paid, but that they had blocked my card because the post office told them they couldn't forward my mail any longer. I've been at this address for more than 20 years. There is no mail forwarding going on. Our postal service has just become completely unreliable.
I am grateful for the opportunity to live in paradise I walked through what used to be a wall, into our living room this morning and looked out over Rocky Creek. I had a moment of Deja Vu where it was the first time I walked through that opening, when I remodeled this house back in the 90s. The house has changed, but the view is still spectacularly unspoiled. I am grateful for Salsa's content management system. Yesterday I needed to write 70 letters, all different, to our 6407 of our supporters to ask them individually to contact their member of congress. Our lobbyist, Jason Osborne, had met with their member and now we were asking them to go in and show their support for our bill to ban the private possession of big cats. That would take me weeks, but I did it in hours. I thought of a way to make it better this morning and can still edit the letters before they go out in the morning. I am thankful for the volunteers who are caring for the cats this morning so that I can go sit beside my mother, on the back row at church and then take her to lunch. My Dad is suffering from a cold and won't be there today. These Sundays with her are precious and I couldn't do it if not for the huge support base that makes it possible. My 2016 written comment on the Federal Register sci·en·tif·ic meth·od noun 1. a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses. My experience with hand raised felids vs mother raised felids spans back to 1978, and includes hundreds of domestic, purebred, and 20 exotic species. This scientific method of observation, measurement and experimentation has led to the testing and formulation of best practices for the raising of captive felids. My hypotheses; that kittens who are raised by their mothers, until they are weaned, are healthier and live longer, than those raised by human hands has been proven. (Jamie circa 1985 or so holding Lamborghini the tortoiseshell Himalayan) 1978-1984 MiCarCo Cattery. Before I knew how deleterious it is to breed to a human contrived standard, I bred and showed Persians and Himalayans in the Cat Fancier's Association. I had an entire wall of my home covered in ribbons that were won by my cats and produced many grand champions. I have since learned that there is no reason to be breeding cats, while so many die in shelters, but the experience gained during that time proved, scientifically, that: 1. Purebred kittens who were raised by their dams were healthier and had a better survival rate than those who were bottle raised. The only time a breeder would bottle raise a purebred cat was if the dam rejected the kitten, or if the dam could not provide sufficient milk. Show cats have to be the most docile of their kind in order to tolerate the noise and chaos of a show hall. They have to be tolerant of being handled by judges without striking out. Mother raised kittens did fine in those situations and consistently scored higher as they were in better overall condition than bottle raised kittens. 1978-2016 Wild Bobcat Rehab and Release. Due to the amount of time spent at vet's offices, for the issues that go along with breeding to an extreme standard for flat faced cats, I was often asked to take home a bobcat who had been hit by a car or otherwise injured or orphaned. The vet can fix them up in a matter of hours, but then it would be months of rehab before they could be released. I've documented 48 wild bobcat situations and 29 of those were yearling, or orphaned juvenile or infant kittens at various stages of weaning. When rehabbing wildcats for the purpose of releasing them back into the wild, the primary objective is to make sure they are as healthy and wild as possible. Yearling and juvenile bobcats, who were weaned by their wild mothers, have always been the healthiest and easiest to get back on their way to a natural life. Their vigor has been proven by the fact that most of them had been hit by cars and lived to hunt another day. The younger a bobcat kitten has been at the time of rescue, the more difficult to raise them up into healthy adults. Three bobcat kittens, who arrived with umbilical cords still attached, died very young because they were unable, despite vaccinations, to mount an appropriate immunity to typical domestic pet disease. After more than 30 years of testing the best alternative milks and the best disease prevention protocols, we still can't begin to replace their mothers. Others survived, and eventually, after up to 18 months of work to get them fit for life in the wild, were set free. Camera traps show that these cats have survived more than a year after release, so we quit documenting the area, but there is no doubt that they would live longer, healthier lives, had they been mother raised. 1992-2016 Big Cat Rescue. Over the past 24 years I've cared for more than 200 exotic cats of 20 species, including the big cats involved in this bill: lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cougars, snow leopards, clouded leopards, and hybrids such as ligers. The sanctuary started with the rescue of over 100 bobcats, Canada lynx and Siberian lynx from fur farms from 1993-1997. The vast majority of these were kittens, at varying stages of being weaned, but who were separated from their mothers during the rescue to prevent maternal infanticide. We didn't know any better then and took advice from the very people who are opposing measures to end their abuse of wild cats. The kittens who spent the most time with their mothers were the healthiest. The kittens who were separated from their mothers earlier were the most difficult to keep alive, and suffered the most health issues later in life, such as nutritional cataracts, frail bones, rotten teeth and less resistance to parasites and other stressors. The emotional issues we see in bottle raised exotic cats include sucking on paws and tails until they bleed, because they didn't get sufficient suckling over months, or years, with their real mothers. They often do not know how to deal with others of their own kind and are fearful and aggressive toward them. They will often over groom, which starts as a self soothing process, like the paw and tail sucking, but results in open wounds and massive hair balls. Exotic cats who have been handled by people are more dangerous because they have no natural aversion and will reach out and try to pull people into the cage. Even in play, they are far too powerful and often maim and kill, without even trying. A recent example was a bobcat, The Great Pretender, who died this week at the age of 24. He had been mother raised and weaned. His previous owner had tried declawing him, to make him more tractable but when that didn't work they dumped him at an exotic animal auction in 1992 where taxidermists were bidding on him. He was rescued and sired a kitten before being neutered in the 1990s. She only lived to be 14. We stopped breeding in 1997 once the Internet arrived and we discovered that none of the exotic cats in captivity would ever serve any conservation purpose. 2013-2016 Foster Kittens. In 2013 Big Cat Rescue partnered with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to foster orphaned and abandoned kittens. We have taken in more than 375 kittens, and mothers with kittens during this time. This has given us the most hands on experience and proof that mother cats are uniquely equipped to raise their own kittens far more successfully than our best efforts. Sometimes mother cats are dumped at county shelters along with their kittens. When we can assist a mother by giving her a quiet and sanitary environment she will raise kittens that are far healthier and better adjusted than those who arrive as orphans that are bottle raised. The mother raised kittens are fatter, have glossier coats, stronger teeth and bones, and learn how to deal with others of their own kind in an appropriate way. The bottle raised kittens are far less thrifty and succumb to illness much more often. Once they are old enough for vaccinations that start at 6 weeks and end at 16 weeks for rabies, they are better protected, but often lack social skills with their own kind and are fearful, aggressive and more likely to bite humans. Kittens who bite their mothers get bitten back and quickly learn that you don't make friends by biting them. Breeders and dealers in cubs emulate that by kicking and punching cubs in the face, but it's not the same, and thus the lessons learned by the cubs are not the same. To conclude, I'd like to point out that you are asking for scientific evidence that cubs should not be hand reared and used as pay to play props, but where was the science that would have supported such an unnatural and unkind activity in the first place? The people who breed cubs for use as photo props or to get people to donate or volunteer in their backyard menageries say they have to hand raise the cubs because the mothers will kill them, or so they will be comfortable in captivity, or so that people will see them and protect habitat for them in the wild. These are all lies and have NO science to back them up. 1. Mother cats will kill cubs if they feel that the situation is so dire that their expenditure of time and effort on raising a litter would be better at a later time. If mothers are killing or rejecting cubs in captivity, it isn't that there is a problem with the mother. It is the environment that is not conducive to breeding and survival. 2. Hand reared cats, whether domestic or exotic, lack the social skills to know how to deal with people. They are more likely to harm someone when they are big enough to do so because they lack the natural aversion to humans that would keep them from reaching out for a keeper. 3. All of the science on the subject shows that when people see endangered species in close proximity to humans they believe that the animals must not be endangered, or that close proximity would not be allowed. The very notion that we should captive breed endangered animals for future generations essentially states that we don't have to protect the wild, because we have them in cages. That is the antitheiss of conservation. The only people who would oppose a complete ban on public contact with cubs of all ages and all species of exotic cat, are those who profit from prolific breeding in order to pull the cubs as quickly as possible to use for the longest period of time in their money making schemes. There is no amount of money and resources USDA can spend to make these kinds of people adhere to any rules about what age, size, etc. The only way to end the abuse (and the violations of the Animal Welfare Act that this sort of abuse already violates) is to ban ALL public contact with all exotic cat species. I am grateful for my son in law, Dr. Justin Boorstein He works all day at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, where they are low cost, high volume. His pay is minimal for a vet, because if he can survive on reduced pay, for 10 years, working for a non profit then his student loans, which are in the hundreds of thousands, are reduced. He comes to the sanctuary after work and on his days off to care for our cats. Two days ago he saw The Great Pretender. The bobcat was 24 years old and had stopped eating. We figured it was just the end for him, but Justin found 9 bad teeth. It was a long shot but he had to try removing that source of bacteria and discomfort to see if there was any more life left to go. He came back out to check on him last night, as he wasn't recovering from anesthesia, and it was clear that Justin was upset; thinking that maybe he could have worked faster…There really was nothing he could have done, but it plagues him any way. This morning Gale woke, Jamie, Justin and me to let us know that Pretender had died in his sleep. Precious and The Great Pretender were the next cats to arrive, after our founder, Windsong the Bobcat. For a time they lived in a cage in our home, and Pretender would jump and spit at me every time I walked by to get to my desk. When we did the huge fur farm rescue in 1993, and had bobcats and lynx kittens running wild through the house, we had to cage my desk, so I could work without them peeing all over everything. Precious and Pretender first moved to a porch and then to a concrete slab with a 12 x 24 foot dog kennel on it and then finally to Easy Street where my Dad built them their own spacious 1200 sf enclosures. I always loved and admired The Great Pretender for never even trying to pretend that he was OK with the idea of being caged. I vow to him, and every other wild cat who was bred for life in a cage that I won't stop until that barbaric practice ends. I am grateful for Gale and the fact that she shows up, almost every morning, at 7:00 am to get ready for the onslaught of volunteers who will begin filing in at 7:30. I am grateful for “Bernadette Juarez, the Deputy Administrator, Animal Care (AC) Program at USDA/APHIS. She seeks to improve regulatory practices and develop training and educational resources. Prior to being named Deputy Administrator in February 2016, Ms. Juarez served with APHIS' Investigative and Enforcement Services (IES), first as Deputy Director for nearly 5 years and then as Director beginning in 2013. As Director, Ms. Juarez was responsible for leading investigations of alleged AWA and HPA violations, as well as all other APHIS-administered statutes and regulations, and pursuing enforcement actions where warranted. Ms. Juarez's experience enforcing the AWA and HPA began prior to her joining APHIS as a trial attorney in USDA's Office of the General Counsel from 2002 to 2009. In over 6 years, she represented APHIS in numerous AWA and HPA administrative enforcement proceedings.” This is why and what I posted yesterday on our front page: USDA Reopening Comment Period on Legal Petition Submitted by Big Cat Rescue and Coalition to Prohibit the Public Contact with Big Cats and Cubs The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced it is reopening the comment period on a legal petition submitted by Big Cat Rescue, the Humane Society of the United States and a coalition of organizations (HSUS, World Wildlife Fund, Detroit Zoological Society, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Born Free USA, Fund for Animals and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries) to completely prohibit exhibition facilities from allowing members of the public to come into direct contact with dangerous wild animals. https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAAPHIS/bulletins/1512904 https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2016-14976.pdf Big Cat Rescue and the coalition applaud USDA for taking this action to solicit information that would support a regulation prohibiting these inhumane and unsafe interactive experiences with big cats, bears and nonhuman primates. “We are very pleased that USDA is requesting further input from the public and see it as a positive sign that USDA is considering taking the action requested in our petition”, said Carole Baskin, founder and CEO of Big Cat Rescue. The action follows a determination by USDA in April 2016 that public contact with infant exotic cats violates the Animal Welfare Act, making clear that it is illegal for cubs to be immediately pulled from their mothers after birth to be hand-reared and bottle-fed by members of the public before their immune systems have even developed. [http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2016/04/usda-tiger-cub-abuse-roadside-zoos-040416.html?credit=web_id93480558]](http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2016/04/usda-tiger-cub-abuse-roadside-zoos-040416.html?credit=web_id93480558%5D) Comprehensive action to eliminate this dangerous practice is essential – for example, Dade City's Wild Things in Dade City, Florida is currently under USDA investigation for numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including stress on infant and young tiger cubs handled and forced to swim with the public. In addition, PETA yesterday filed an intent to sue Dade City's Wild Things under the Endangered Species Act. PETA contends that prematurely separating infant tigers from their mothers, forcing them to interact with members of the public, and confining them to nearly barren concrete pens all constitute unlawful “takes,” defined by the Endangered Species Act as harming, harassing, and/or wounding an animal. http://www.peta.org/blog/nightmarish-tiger-sweatshop-gets-notice-petas-intent-sue/ Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. I finished a book on tape called the Happiness Advantage I was so enthralled with it that I bought a dozen copies for our staff, and need to buy more, as it turned out not to be enough for all who were interested in it. Part of the exercise is to write down three things that I'm grateful for each day. I do it mentally, because I'm so busy, but I'm going to try and make a habit of daily posts here for things that I am grateful for. I am grateful to Nest.com for creating Internet based camera feeds. We have used them for a couple of years, back when they were called DropCam.com for keeping an eye on our cats in the recovery hospital, etc. Last night I put one on The Great Pretender, a 24 year old bobcat who had to have 8 rotten molars removed. I was able to go home, eat dinner and watch him on my iPhone 6 + which has a huge screen. Pulling up the camera on my computer will be the very next thing I do. The company is donating a bunch of cameras. They think we are interesting and want to use us as an example of ways to use their products. I am grateful for mapping technology. I'm trying to install a 3000 square foot 48 x 72 modular building adjacent to our current gift shop to expand the shopping space. I will be able to save tens of thousands of dollars, thanks to google maps, Kinko's Printers and my ability to draw and measure a straight line. Before, I'd have to hire a surveyor to meet the county's demands. I am grateful for being surrounded by the best and brightest. I've said this before, in my head and in Facebook posts, but it's such an over arching part of what makes me happy. Of our 14 staff, 80 volunteers and 26 interns, only two of them give me any real pause, and yesterday both of them brought something good into my life by sharing their experiences about health and the benefits of a healthy vegan diet. One is a new vegan and the healthiest she's ever been and the other is about the most unhealthy meat eater, who thinks she's dying. Here is the good news, I guess, from today. We petitioned USDA in 2012 to stop cub petting schemes. They got about 15,000 letters in support of our position, but seemed to think that AZA zoos didn't have enough time to object, so they opened the comment period back up again in 2013. Now, 4 years later, they still haven't taken action, but rather seem to want to get more of the bad guys to object, so they are opening up the comment period again through August of this year. We will continue to rally animal lovers to let USDA know that cub handling is cruel, dangerous and downright evil. Here is USDA's letter: This document is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on 06/24/2016 and available online at http://federalregister.gov/a/2016-14976, and on FDsys.gov BILLING CODE: 3410-34-P DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service 9 CFR Parts 2 and 3 [Docket No. APHIS-2012-0107] Petition to Amend Animal Welfare Act Regulations to Prohibit Public Contact with Big Cats, Bears, and Nonhuman Primates AGENCY: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA. ACTION: Notice; reopening of comment period. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: On August 5, 2013, we published in the Federal Register (78 FR 47215-47217, Docket No. APHIS-2012-0107) a notice making available for comment a petition requesting amendments to the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations and standards, including amendments to prohibit licensees from allowing individuals, with certain exceptions, from coming into direct or physical contact with big cats, bears, or nonhuman primates of any age, to define the term “sufficient distance,” and to prohibit the public handling of young or immature big cats, bears, and nonhuman primates. Comments were required to be received on or before October 4, 2013. In a subsequent notice published October 24, 2013 (78 FR 63408), we reopened the comment period for an additional 45 days to November 18, 2013. We received 15,379 comments. We are again reopening the comment period and will accept all comments we receive on or before August 31, 2016. We are especially interested in receiving public comments on the questions presented below. Responses to these questions will help further inform our thinking on the handling of dangerous animals: 1. What factors and characteristics should determine if a type of animal is suitable for public contact? When the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) describes an animal as dangerous, there are certain characteristics we use to classify the animals, such as the size, strength, and instinctual behavior of an animal, risk of disease transmission between animals and humans (i.e., zoonoses such as Herpes B), and ability to safely and humanely handle (or control) the animal in all situations. 2. What animals should APHIS consider including under the definition of dangerous animals? For example, are all nonhuman primates dangerous? We currently identify some animals as dangerous, including, but not limited to, nondomestic felids (such as lions, tigers, jaguars, mountain lions, cheetahs, and any hybrids thereof), wolves, bears, certain nonhuman primates (such as gorillas, chimps, and macaques), elephants, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, moose, bison, camels, and common animals known to carry rabies. 3. What animals may pose a public health risk and why? What risks does public contact with dangerous animals present to the individual animal and the species and why? 4. What are the best methods of permanent, usable animal identification for dangerous animals? 5. What are the most humane training techniques to use with dangerous animals? 6. What scientific information (peer-reviewed journals preferred) is available that identifies the appropriate weaning ages for nondomestic felids, bears, elephants, wolves, nonhuman primates, and other dangerous animals? 7. What industry, organizational, or governmental standards have been published for the handling and care of dangerous animals? 8. What constitutes sufficient barriers for enclosures around dangerous animals to keep members of the public away from the animals? What methods (structures, distance, attendants, etc.) are needed to prevent entry of the public into an enclosure and keep the animal safe while still allowing for meaningful viewing? In addition to inviting the public to comment on these questions, we are making available for the public a Web site containing background information on the topics explained in this notice. We also plan to convene three virtual listening sessions during the summer, allowing stakeholders to participate regardless of their location before the close of the public comment period. The dates of each virtual listening session are as follows: June 29, 2016, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. eastern time (ET); July 6, 2016, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET; and August 4, 2016, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET. Persons wishing to participate in the virtual listening sessions are required to register prior to the session. Links for registering to participate in each listening session are included in the Web site in footnote 2. Upon registration, participants will be provided with a call-in number and access code. The virtual listening sessions will provide the public with opportunities to share their views on the handling of dangerous animals and provide us with additional material to inform our thinking on this topic. Authority: 7 U.S.C. 2131-2159; 7 CFR 2.22, 2.80, and 371.7. Done in Washington, DC, this 21st day of June 2016. William H. Clay, Acting Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. ‘Nightmarish Tiger Sweatshop' Gets Notice of PETA's Intent to Sue I love you PETA and especially Brittany Peet who has been working with us to file this lawsuit against one of the local tiger pimps. ‘Nightmarish Tiger Sweatshop' Gets Notice of PETA's Intent to Sue Written by Michelle Kretzer | June 22, 2016 This morning, the owners and operators of Dade City's Wild Things woke up to find PETA's legally required notice of its intent to sue under the Endangered Species Act in their inbox. The notorious Florida roadside zoo subjects young tigers to swimming events and other forced encounters with the paying public. PETA contends that prematurely separating infant tigers from their mothers, forcing them to interact with members of the public, and confining them to nearly barren concrete pens all constitute unlawful “takes,” defined by the Endangered Species Act as harming, harassing, and/or wounding an animal. If successful, the lawsuit could have a major impact on the captive tiger overpopulation crisis in the U.S., which is fueled by the huge demand for tiger cubs for use in photo ops and public encounters. While wild populations dwindle, there are untold thousands of captive tigers being held in shoddy roadside zoos and in the backyards and basements of private owners in the U.S., many of which are completely unregulated. None of these tigers will ever be able to be released into the wild. “Dade City's Wild Things is like a nightmarish tiger sweatshop, where terrified cubs are torn away from their mothers, bullied into performing, and then, when they're no longer deemed profitable, relegated to tiny, virtually barren cages,” says PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet. “PETA urges families to shun this hellhole and any other business that imprisons and exploits wild animals.” PETA's allegations are supported by a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against Dade City's Wild Things for its numerous violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, including improper handling of tiger cubs. There are 2 Reasons Why Zoo Keepers Are Killed by Tigers 1 There has been a failure in the safety measures to keep tigers and zoo keepers apart, or 2 The zoo keeper doesn't understand their relationship with tigers or any other big cat. There is a lot that can go wrong, from failing latches, to not having a clear line of sight between the cat and keeper to the mishaps that are caused by a keeper purposely entering the cats' space. Even if the cats are not killed, for doing what comes naturally, they are doomed to life in prison. Night Houses seem to often be part of the human / big cat mauling or killing scenario and maybe it is because it is such a cruel practice. Cats are most active at night, but for liability reasons are shut in prison-like, windowless, cells by zoos when they are closed. The cats hate it, so they have to withhold food to force them in at night. Big Cat Rescue does not lock cats up at night and thanks to our mild climate in Florida, does not utilize any sort of indoor housing for the big cats. Because there are no solid walls or doors, the keepers at Big Cat Rescue can always see where the cat is before approaching the enclosure. Caregivers at the sanctuary do not enter the enclosures of any big cat, unless that cat is safely locked into another portion of the cage by the CEO or President and the Operations Manager. Exotic cats are spectacularly intelligent creatures and have years to plot their escape or revenge. The second reason keepers are killed by big cats is that they think they are “tiger whisperers” or they think they have some super natural bond with apex predators that makes them special. Anyone who espouses such nonsense shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a captive big cat, because they clearly do not understand exotic cats. It is just a matter of time before it ends in tragedy. Cats in cages may be solicitous of their owners or keepers, but that's because they have to beg for everything. It's sad to see it, when you think about how majestic these animals are meant to be. Humans mistake their temporary power, ensured by the strength of the cage, for having a bond or relationship with the big cat. Tigers have their own agenda and it doesn't include pleasing people. Some may not be overtly nasty about it, but given a choice will escape and never look back. At Big Cat Rescue our caregivers are trained to feed and clean small cats, like bobcats, servals, caracals and lynx for 6 months before they can graduate to cougars. We are a NO TOUCH facility; no, not even their fingertips, may touch the cats! If they prove themselves trustworthy around the smaller cats, they can graduate to cougar keeping. They are with us about two years before they are even allowed to be in the sections where lions, tigers and leopards are housed. That two year process allows us ample time to weed out the delusional people who think they could get away with touching a big cat and live to tell about it. More Resources on the Captive Big Cat Issues Just like the better zoos are accredited by AZA, the better sanctuaries are accredited by GFAS. http://SanctuaryFederation.org These are the big cat standards for GFAS: http://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/gfas/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/FelidStandardsJuly2013HA.pdf The state of Florida does not allow contact with big cats over 40 lbs., but may have some exemption for employees. http://myfwc.com/license/captive-wildlife/ Never Pay To Pet Cubs USDA has enforced actions against facilities that allowed public contact with big cat cubs over the age of 12 weeks, as they can take off a finger at that age and just recently announced they will cite facilities for pimping out cubs under the age of 4 weeks. AZA zoos don't do that, but there are plenty of backyard breeders that do. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/downloads/big_cat/big_cat_q&a.pdf April 3, 2016 USDA cracks down on abuse of cubs under the age of four weeks. In response to a 2012 legal petition filed by The Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund, Detroit Zoological Society, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Born Free USA, Big Cat Rescue, Fund for Animals and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, theU.S. Department of Agriculture issued guidance making clear that exhibitors violate the Animal Welfare Act by allowing members of the public to handle or feed infant exotic cats like tigers, lions, cheetahs, jaguars or leopards. April 5, 2016 USFWS announced that they are rescinding the generic tiger loophole. Big Cat Rescue has been pressuring the USFWS since at least 2007 to rescind this loophole and on 8/22/11 after a meeting with the USFWS the Generic Tiger issue was published to the Federal Register for public comment and got over 15,000 comments in support of our request to ban the breeding of non purebred tigers. According to their Q&A it sounds like the USFWS may still rubber stamp activities that really don't help tiger conservation, but it's a step. USDA only banned the contact with cubs under four weeks, but that is a step too. So What Can You Do to Stop the Abuse and the Killings and Maulings? As long as big cats are privately owned and used as photo and ego props, the fantasy that they can be handled safely will prevail and accidents will continue to happen. Regulations can't work, because USDA and USFWS don't have the resources nor apparently the will to enforce the weak rules they have, so that is why we need an all out ban on the private possession of big cats. You can help get that done at http://BigCatAct.com Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. Meet the minds behind Good Dog, their motivations, goals and dreams. Co-Founder and CEO Josh Wais, Judi Stella, Head of Standards and Research, and Cat Matloub, Head of Partnerships and Legal Affairs join the host Laura Reeves for a convo on the origin story of Good Dog. Here at the Good Dog Pod, we are all about supporting dog breeders and responsible dog ownership. Good Dog is on a mission to build a better world for our dogs and the people who love them through education and advocacy. The Good Dog Pod provides dog lovers with the latest updates in canine health and veterinary care, animal legislation and legal advocacy, canine training and behavior science, and dog breeding practices. Subscribe and join our mission to help give our dogs the world they deserve. In this episode, Josh shares his vision for creating Good Dog. It all started with a question. Josh Wais, Good Dog Co-Founder/CEO: “How can we use technology in the right way to help empower those who are working so hard to make sure that we have dogs that are sound of body and mind? And empower prospective dog owners who just want to do what's right, but maybe have had a bit of a challenge figuring out what that is.” “That's what this podcast is all about. It's about putting things out there that we've learned. It's about educating. But it's also our way of listening and our way of having a conversation with the community at large.” Judi shares her background in the veterinary field and working in collaboration with Purdue University at the USDA overseeing the Animal Welfare Act. Judi Stella, Head of Research and Standards: “I love Good Dog's mission. I saw this as an opportunity to really work with dog breeders and dog owners to interject some more science and some more evidence-based recommendations into what we are doing. I see my role as the scientist that can translate the science to regular people. With the technology we can communicate it on a large scale. We have interviews with experts about behavior and genetics and reproduction. We make these available to anybody. We want every person that we come in contact with to be able to succeed. We want to give them the information they need to succeed. All of our webinars and educational materials are on our site and they're free to everyone.” Cat Matloub, Head of Partnerships and Legal Affairs “I saw a lot of people very close to me -- my roommates, my best friends, my colleagues, my law school classmates, and then my parents -- go through just horrifying experiences of trying to get a dog. Wanting to get a dog. Wanting to bring that joy and love into their lives. And just being faced with huge anxiety about how to do that. Is it wrong to get one from a breeder? What does that mean? How do you know what you should do? How do you know you're not gonna get your money stolen online like so many people do? It's heartbreaking. [After] I connected with Josh and Lauren, who had similarly gone through that experience, I had this kind of life changing moment. I unlearned everything that I thought I knew about the dog world. I learned that we've been hugely successful in decreasing the number of dogs in shelters and rescues. Because we love dogs so very much the demand is huge. Actually, we don't have an overpopulation problem, as https://www.naiaonline.org/ (Patti Strand) likes to say, it's a distribution problem. The truth is we're going to run out of dogs in the future if we don't support dog breeders. Then I started learning more and I started realizing that dog breeders are actually the ones doing everything in their power to produce healthy dogs, to produce well-adjusted dogs. They stand behind their dogs. It was just kind of so eye opening.” Laura Reeves, Host Good Dog Pod and https://puredogtalk.com/ (Pure Dog Talk) podcast “I am a dog breeder. I have been involved in breeding purebred dogs for 40 years. I was a professional show dog handler. I am an American Kennel
Between 25 and 100 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories after suffering through cruel and unnecessary experiments. But why did we give you such a huge range? Why couldn't we give you a more precise figure? It's because 95% of the animals used in research and testing are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act and the government is not required to report the number of these animals. This means that we have no idea how many birds, mice, rats, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates suffer in labs. And yet, we do know, for example, how many hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits are used. What kind of sense does this make? None. The public has a right to know how many animals—the TRUE number—are suffering and dying in laboratories.
