This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes tackle "12 Monkeys", this season's Audience Choice episode and a film that, despite its reputation, just doesn't click for either of them.Mike Butler went in hoping his opinion might change this time around. As a big fan of "Brazil", he wanted to connect with Terry Gilliam's mix of sci-fi and absurdism. Unfortunately, his feelings haven't shifted since first seeing it decades ago. Both Mike Field and Butler find the performances from Bruce Willis and especially Brad Pitt pushed too far into manic territory, making it hard to buy into the story. They also struggle with the central relationships and logic of the film. The idea that the doctor would go along with Willis at all, let alone develop romantic feelings for him, feels completely unbelievable. Tonally, the movie seems stuck between wanting to be a serious science fiction story and an absurdist Gilliam nightmare, and it never settles on what it actually wants to be.While they do appreciate the production design, props, and costumes used for the future sequences, the rest of the film falls flat for them. Still, with "12 Monkeys" being so well regarded by many, the Mikes openly acknowledge that this might be one of those "it's me, not you" moments.
It's thirty years since Brad Pitt appeared in two movies that have influenced cinema in immeasurable ways in the three decades since, but how well have Seven and 12 Monkeys stood the test of time? Presented by J.R. Southall, with Jon Arnold and Matt Barber
Happy Tuesday and Happy Holidays, Everyone! If anyone can convince me to join their Dungeons & Dragons campaign, it's Todd Stashwick. If you don't know Todd, he plays Deacon on 12 Monkeys and Captain Liam Shaw on Star Trek: Picard, among many other roles. He is also playing Palladin in the upcoming VisionQuest from creator Terry Matalas. Todd is a brilliant actor and a true nerd and we have so much fun in this conversation. We talk about how he got from doing comedy at Second City to playing killers on TV. We get into what it was like growing up as a nerd and the pinch-me experience of the moment he joined the Star Trek universe in Star Trek: Picard. Plus, we tease VisionQuest and Carrie and talk about our shared love of the great Matthew Lillard. In this special Rewind episode, we journey back to New York Comic Con for an electrifying conversation with 12 Monkeys co-executive producers Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, joined by the unforgettable Emily Hampshire, who brings Jennifer Goines to life with chaotic brilliance. Season One of 12 Monkeys reimagines the cult classic film into a sprawling, time-twisting saga — and this episode dives deep into the creative process, character evolution, and the show's bold narrative risks. From unraveling paradoxes to crafting emotionally grounded sci-fi, Fickett and Matalas share how they built a world where time isn't just a backdrop — it's a weapon. Emily Hampshire reflects on embodying Jennifer's fractured genius and how the role challenged and transformed her as a performer.

Tim and Andrew hop back in time once again with Bruce Willis in 12 Monkeys. Terry Gilliam's riff on La Jetee. Let's just say it hits a little different now than it did in the 90s.
1995 was a launching pad of a year for Brad Pitt, as evidenced by our last two films. First it was the classic "Se7en," and then an Oscar nominated turn in the Uber weird Terry Gilliam directed "12 Monkeys." While we may not have liked the film nearly as much as either of us remembered, 1995 will be remembered as a coming out party for Pitt.Along with some new beers, and trivia, we hope you enjoy this episode more than we enjoyed the film. Strap in, slap on your tinfoil hat, and squint through the splinters of time, because we're unraveling the brain-bending, plague-drenched, chrono-chaotic fever dream that is 12 Monkeys (1995). This ain't your grandma's time travel movie—unless she's into post-apocalyptic underground bunkers and Cassandra complexes. Bruce Willis stumbles through time with a head full of nightmares, Madeleine Stowe plays psychiatrist turned fugitive, and Brad Pitt delivers a twitchy, anarchic tour de force. There's a virus, some very persistent "monkeys," and a whole lot of mental whiplash. So hop in the time chair and join us—because in 12 Monkeys, reality is optional and the future's already infected. Fans of Monty Python may know Terry Gilliam as the animator of their bizarre cartoons featured on the show. Or as the only American born member of the legendary troupe. But as his career progressed, Gilliam took his imaginative talents to the director's chair. His visually stunning and sometimes uncomfortable films thrust you into dream-like worlds and explored important characteristics of society. From the time-hopping child view of Time Bandits, to the award winning exploration of class structure in Brazil, Gilliam takes you on a brain trip with each of his tales. If it weren't for his terrible luck during productions, we may have even more to explore. This is Terry Gilliam. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1995 cyberpunk psychological end-of-world thriller, 12 Monkeys – directed by Terry Gilliam; written by David Webb Peoples & Janet Peoples; inspired by the film “La Jetee” by Chris Marker; starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Jon Seda, David Morse, and Christopher Plummer. In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.12 Monkeys was a film I saw for the first time as a VHS rental in 1996. I did not see it in the movie theater. At that point, I had not seen the French New Wave film that inspired it, La Jetee (that wouldn't happen until 1999). For the 17-year old me who was wired into science-fiction, cyberpunk, and all things end of the world, this hit every freaking box. It is one of the best mindfuck films out there and I love it.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. It's Die Hard in a time travel movie! This week on the show, Phil and Liam wrestle with 12 MONKEYS (though not literally, sadly). For this spirited discussion of Terry Gilliam's challenging 1995 sci-fi mind-bender, the boys are joined by special guest Brad Peyton, director of such blockbuster hits as SAN ANDREAS, RAMPAGE and the forthcoming Netflix sci-fi movie ATLAS starring Jennifer Lopez! In a dystopian future, a deadly artificially-created virus has wiped out the majority of the human population and forced the small number of survivors to live underground. In an attempt to understand what happened and potentially find a cure, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to investigate. However, Cole is mistakenly sent back to the wrong time, and is thus assumed to be insane. With the help of compassionate psychologist Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeline Stowe), the increasingly mentally fragile Cole attempts to complete the mission, find those responsible, and save the future. The guys debate whether this is Bruce Willis' greatest dramatic performance and muse on their favorite Bruce Willis roles. They also talk about their respective relationships with director Terry Gilliam and his work, and Brad even describes a memorable encounter with the man himself! This is a difficult film that require a bankable star to make it commercial viable, and so Brad talks about his personal experiences working with giant movie stars such as Dwayne Johnson and J-Lo, providing a fascinating insight into his creative process, and the delicate dynamic between director and star on a modern movie set. They also talk extensively about 12 MONKEY co-stars Madeline Stowe and Brad Pitt (who was Oscar-nominated for his role as the schizophrenic mental patient/revolutionary Jeffrey Goines) and what Pitt's eclectic filmography has in common with Bruce Willis' own career choices. As always, the show culminates with the Die Hard Oscars, followed by a particularly appropriate edition of the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz! Look out for this week's convoluted corner – it's a doozy!12 MONKEYS trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15s4Y9ffW_oAt the time of release, 12 MONKEYS is streaming on Starz and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu and all the usual platformsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Then we discuss the film's take on the messy narrative contrivance of time-travel, how it attends to its bleak vision of a futureless future, and how some modern time travel narratives help reveal a sliver of hope in the film's tragic determinism. This week George Dehner drops in to talk about 12 Monkeys (1995) and the history of epidemic diseases. We talk not only about the possibilities of a dystopian world caused by global contagion, but about how the fields of both environmental history and disease history evolved in the latter half of the 20th century. George is one of my former professors and it was awesome to sit down and talk to him. This is a cool conversation with one of the most influential scholars in my life. Hope you like it.About our guest:George Dehner is a world environmental historian who examines the intersection of humans and disease in the modern era. His first book Influenza: A Century of Science and Public Health was published in April 2012 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. His second book Global Flu and You: A History of Influenza was published in December 2012 by Reaktion Press. His article “WHO Knows Best? National and International Responses to Pandemic Threats and the ‘Lessons' of 1976” published in the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences received the 2011 Margaret T. For this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched “12 Monkeys,” the 1995 science fiction film from Terry Gilliam starring Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe, Brad Pitt and Christopher Plummer. “12 Monkeys” is an adaptation of sorts of a 1962 French short film “La Jetée,” in which scientists in a post-nuclear apocalypse future send a man back and forward through time in an effort to save their present. The man eventually succeeds in his mission, only to be killed — his death being an image he had seen again and again in his dreams. And in the film “12 Monkeys,” Bruce Willis plays James Cole, a prisoner living in an underground compound beneath Philadelphia, in a future where the human race has been nearly wiped out by viral plague. He is selected to go back in time to find the original virus to help scientists in his present develop a cure. During multiple trips back in time, he encounters people — a patient at a mental health institution played by Pitt, a psychologist played by Stowe — who all seem to have a role in the events that will end the human race. Cole struggles to resolve whether his life and experiences are real or not, but comes to understand that the virus is real, and that the man responsible is in his orbit. He attempts to stop him but is shot and killed, fulfilling the vision he had seen, in his dreams, of his own death. The tagline for “12 Monkeys” is “The Future is history.”“12 Monkeys” is available for rent or purchase on Amazon and iTunes.Connor Lynch produced this episode. When it's Spring Break for Big Rodd, Ben & Adam start exploring the resumes of some favorite Star Trek creatives. But when Terry Matalas' time-travel show turns out to be set in a Red Dawn reboot universe, it raises questions about the SyFy network's gore quotient and who was responsible for casting. How much meat should there be on a post-apocalyptic arm bone? Where is Pennsylvania Memorial Hospital located? Does Jones need to do better w/r/t employee training? It's the episode that was advised not to call Terry Gilliam!Support the production of Greatest Trek Spring Break episodes coming up:Devil's Revenge (2019) - Available to rent on Amazon or free with ads on Roku in the USCheers S4E24-26 Strange Bedfellows - Available on Hulu in the USBar Rescue S4E24 Brokedown Palace - Available on Paramount+ in the USLaw & Order SVU S10E5 Retro - Available on Hulu in the USTales from the Crypt S2E11 Judy, You're Not Yourself Today - Available on YouTube in the USHell On Wheels S1E1 Pilot - Available on AMC+ or free with ads on Roku in the US Music by Adam RaguseaFollow Greatest Trek on Twitter, and discuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek!Greatest Trek on Twitch | Facebook group | Subreddit | Discord | WikiSign up for our mailing list!Get a thing at podshop.biz!
