In 1938, three years before his death, the legendary Jelly Roll Morton sat down to record a series of Library of Congress interviews with noted folklorist Alan Lomax, who called the results “a virtual history of the birth pangs of jazz as it happened in the New Orleans of the turn of the century.”Along the way, Morton elaborated on his narrative with various songs, including one he called “Winin' Boy Blues,” a tune that contains more anomalies than a Salvador Dali canvas. You can start with the song's authorship. Some credit Morton as its composer, perhaps as a musical tribute to himself. Others believe Jelly Roll heard it in his youth as a folk tune about the sportin' life in his native Crescent City. What About the Title? Then there are the questions about that title. Transcripts of the original Lomax interviews preserve the song as “Winin' Boy Blues.” Subsequent recordings, however, have called it “Whinin' Boy,” based on what later listeners think they hear Morton actually saying in the audio of those interviews. Each opinion has its advocates. The “Winin' Boy” school of thought contends “winin'” is a double contraction of the word winding, the term presumably meant to celebrates the sexual dexterity of the song's protagonist.A smaller — and perhaps less convincing — class of followers in this same group think “winin'” refers instead to the boy's love of wines. Some even go so far as to suggest the song's boy got his name from his habit of collecting all the near-empty wine bottles after a night's debauchery, pouring them together into one glass and drinking it down.Meanwhile, on the other side of the debate, commentators contend the word is “whine” because a whining boy, they say, is old New Orleans slang for a pimp. Or, in a variation, that he was a youngster who sat outside a brothel with his guitar and/or harmonica or just his voice; then when he saw police coming, he would "whine" a specific song/tune as an alert to the people inside the house.Take your pick. Wind, wine or whine.Don't DenyThe music's mysteries don't stop there. Morton's opening lyric is: I'm the W(h)inin' Boy, don't deny my name. How does a name get denied? And why? And by whom? The good folks over at the Internet's fun Mudcat Cafe (mudcat.org) have had wonderful discussions on this bit of verse.A contributor known only as “Amos” noted, “Having your name ‘denied' (denigrated or made nothing of) is part of the general burden of debasement that blues like these are born in.“Similar complaints from other parts of the forest,” he added, include: “Just 'cuz I'm a stranger, everybody wanna dog me around…” (e.g. Howlin' Wolf).Stavin' What?At least one more of the song's curiosities calls for exegesis. Lower in the same opening verse, Jelly Roll growled: Pick it up and shake it like sweet Stavin' Chain.Like, uh, say what?Well, let's start with the fact that there was an actual tool called a “staving chain” used in the old days of barrel-making. It was a length of chain with a loop on one end (like a dog choker collar) used to pull the staves of a barrel together so that the hoops could be driven in. “Stavin' chain” also popped up in prison culture as the name of a similar chain pulled around inmates' ankles to hold chain gangs together. And, as you might imagine, we once again are not far from sex in this search. A much smaller stavin' chain — made of little smooth links — was said to be used as a sexual aid to help a man "stave off" ejaculation during a frolic. (We'll just leave it at that and let you and your vivid, virile imagination take it from there.)Stavin' Who?By the way, in the Lomax interviews, Morton noted that “Stavin' Chain” was not only a what but a who. “Stavin' Chain” was the name of a pimp, he said, who was “supposed to have more women in this district than any other pimp.”As a trickster in African American legend, “Stavin' Chain” figures prominently in later recordings by Lil Johnson and by Big Joe Williams. A 1937 Johnson recording, for example, identified “Stavin' Chain” as the chief engineer on a train, a big, strong man who could make love all night long. In 1939 when John and Ruby Lomax were recording songs by prisoners at Ramsey State Farm in Brazoria County, Texas, they found at least two different inmates claiming to be the original “Stavin' Chain.”Footnote: Oh Mary…Oh, and if you remember our earlier discussion of Kentucky-born musicologist Mary Guthrie Wheeler, who wrote 1944's Steamboatin' Days: Folk Songs of the River Packet Era, you might get a kick out of knowing of her unintentionally hilarious difficulties in trying to collect a version of "Stavin' Chain" for her book. You got to wonder what wizened old stevedores thought when she approached, in all innocence, asking them to sing to her about this “stavin' chain” she had heard so much about. Our Take on the TuneWhatever its mysteries, Jelly Roll Morton's tune has always resonated with us. We love how this century-old song just eases on down and settles into a groove on any sultry summer night. And, hey, here's a shout-out to Floodster Sam St. Clair. We seldom can accompany these weekly podcasts with video, like the one that tops this report. We're grateful that Sam happened to have his camera running when this tune got played at a recent rehearsal. This is a public episode. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
At a pivotal moment in Chapter 17 of Nathanael Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables, two of his protagonists escape from haunted Salem, Massachusetts, and are whirled away from its power by the even greater power of steam: “…Looking from the window, they could see the world racing past them. At one moment, they were rattling through a solitude; the next, a village had grown up around them; a few breaths more, and it had vanished, as if swallowed by an earthquake. The spires of meeting-houses seemed set adrift from their foundations; the broad-based hills glided away. Everything was unfixed from its age-long rest, and moving at whirlwind speed in a direction opposite to their own.” As in Hawthorne, American literature of all kinds abounded with railroad and steam power metaphors. In an incredibly short time, a new technology became a point of reference for a nation. In 1858, when Sallie McNeill of Brazoria County in Texas first saw a train, she noted in her diary that “I could hardly realize that this was my first sight of the ‘iron horse', because I have read and heard of the cars so often, that everything seemed natural.” With me to discuss steamboats, railroads, and steam engines, and their cultural power in the antebellum United States, is Andrew W. Marrs, author of The American Transportation Revolution: A Social and Cultural History. Andrew Marrs is a historian at the Department of State; and I should announce here that his views on steamboats, railroads, and steam engines, and related topics, are his own, and not those of the State Department or the federal government. For Further Investigation In Episode 134, Cynthia Kierner and I touched on steamboat disasters–among many other disasters; and if you're interested in an overview of the history of technology since approximately 1450, listen to Episode 251. Andrew W. Marrs, Railroads in the Old South: Pursuing Progress in a Slave Society–"Far from seeing the Old South as backward and premodern, Marrs finds evidence of urban life, industry, and entrepreneurship throughout the region. But these signs of progress existed alongside efforts to preserve traditional ways of life. Railroads exemplified Southerners' pursuit of progress on their own terms: developing modern transportation while retaining a conservative social order." Authorities have officially charged Don Steven McDougal with capital murder in connection to the tragic death of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham, who had been missing since Thursday, Feb. 15. McDougal, who was already in custody on an unrelated aggravated assault charge, now faces the serious allegations related to the young girl's disappearance and death. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed McDougal's charges, specifying that he is accused of capital murder of a person aged between 10 and 15 years old. This development comes after crews found Audrii's body on Tuesday, prompting officials to declare the search area a crime scene near US-59 and the Trinity River Bridge in Livingston, Texas. During an emotional press conference, Polk County Sheriff Byron Lyons expressed his condolences to the community following the tragic discovery of Audrii's body. Details regarding the condition of her body have not been disclosed, pending an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. "We believe there is enough evidence," Lyons said during Tuesday's press conference. Audrii's disappearance had sparked a widespread search effort, with McDougal initially identified as a person of interest before being labeled as a suspect. Authorities revealed that McDougal had admitted to leaving the house with Audrii on the morning she vanished but refused to disclose further details about their whereabouts. Newly obtained criminal records show McDougal was indicted on attempted indecency with a child nearly 17 years ago in Brazoria County, which, according to legal analyst Anthony Osso Jr., would have required him to register as a sex offender. However, McDougal pleaded down to child enticement in 2008. The charge does not require sex offender registration. According to records, on March 31, 2007, McDougal "attempted to remove (a child's) pants after getting in bed with her." According to online records, McDougal has a criminal history that goes back two decades and includes more than a dozen arrests. Additionally, information from a mechanic shop near Highway 59 in Livingston suggests McDougal acted suspiciously when Audrii disappeared. Workers at the shop said that McDougal was there trying to get a part for his blue Chevy Suburban, adding that he was filthy, covered in dirt, and acting suspiciously. Despite cooperating with investigators and leading them to various locations, including where Audrii's backpack was found, McDougal had not confessed to any involvement in her disappearance at the time of his arrest on the unrelated aggravated assault charge. The community of Livingston gathered for a private prayer vigil to mourn Audrii's passing, emphasizing her loss's impact on the tight-knit town. Elizabeth Kobes, a member of the community, described Audrii as "really important" and lamented the heartbreaking nature of the situation. As McDougal remains in custody at the Polk County Jail, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Audrii's death, determined to bring justice to her and her grieving loved ones. On Thursday's show: Every year, the Episcopal Health Foundation surveys Texans to gauge where different communities throughout the state stand regarding health care. The latest report shows an alarming rise in Texans choosing to skip or delay medical care because they simply can't afford it. Also this hour: In our latest candidate interview, we welcome your questions for attorney Lee Kaplan, who's running for Houston mayor. And Houston writer Kathryn Casey tells us about largely forgotten explorer Ruth Robertson, who in 1949 mounted an expedition into the Venezuelan jungle to measure one of the world's tallest waterfalls. Later in life, Robertson settled in Brazoria County. She's the subject of Casey's new historical fiction novel, Angel Falls.
Between 1933 and 1946, John A. Lomax made some 80 hours of recordings in the state of Texas, his home state. (John was born in Mississippi in 1867, but his family moved to rural Bosque County, Texas, near Waco, just after his second birthday.) It's a massive amount of material, reflecting an extraordinary diversity of vernacular traditions, and featuring the first and last recordings that John made. We've labored for quite a few years to secure the funding to digitize, catalog, and make available the collection in its entirety, but have to date come up short. In 2020 our colleagues at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Center kindly provided us with the transfers they'd done some years earlier of the ten hours of Texas recordings that John and his second wife Ruby Terrill Lomax (“Miss Terrill,” as he always called her) made in the spring of 1939—our idea being that this discrete collection could function as a representative sample of all the Lomax Texas material while we continue our efforts to digitally preserve and make the entirety available. With the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, we digitally cataloged all of the ‘39 recordings and prepared the catalog for inclusion in the Lomax Digital Archive, where they are now available for your exploration and enjoyment (here). 1. Emergency room visits for suspected suicide attempts rose during the pandemic among adolescents. People of all ages are feeling the strain of social isolation and anxiety. For teenagers, these feelings can be compounded by bullying, which can lead to suicide. It is important for adults to be aware of the signs students display when contemplating suicide so they can get help. Some of the most common symptoms of suicidal ideation in teens include: talking about wanting to die or hurting oneself, expressing feelings of hopelessness, talking about being a burden to others, increased alcohol or drug abuse, withdrawing from friends and activities, abnormal mood swings, and giving away prized possessions. If you notice that a teen you know is exhibiting any of these signs, it is important to talk to them and get them help. But where would you turn?Registered nurse Brenda George is the co-founder of S.T.O.P. (Stop.Talk.Overcome.Pain), an initiative she started with her husband BL. They were inspired to create this because a friend's daughter attempted suicide. Brenda came to realize that the suicide rate in Brazoria County, Texas increased by 30%. In Texas, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 24. Brenda and BL also saw this trend occurring throughout the country. The Georges created an educator-approved campaign in collaboration with more than 35 local agencies in Brazoria County, hosting youth rallies and school events that focus on suicide prevention, anti-bullying, cyber-bullying awareness, and intervention. In this episode, we speak to Brenda about suicide prevention in youths, how to identify suicide risk factors, how bullying and cyberbullying contribute to suicide rates, and what her organization is doing to make a difference.Podcast Planner for Teachers and StudentsFlipboard EDU Magazine Flipboard Educators Blog Flipboard EDU Podcast Website 411 Immunitea Our focus is solely on creating natural products that leave you feeling happy and healthy. This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Chuck Clay of Pratt Clay LLC (https://www.prattclay.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Georgia Super Lawyer Chuck Clay of Pratt Clay LLC shares his experience -- from a record-breaking verdict to an overturn on appeal -- representing construction crane operator Tyler Lee after his left leg was crushed on the job, resulting in an above-the-knee amputation. In September 2013, an effort to free a stuck auger on a Houston, Texas construction site caused a lattice-boom crane to collapse. A piece of the collapsing crane struck Tyler and crushed his leg. Trial lawyer Chuck Clay and his team asserted that Berkel & Co. Contractors Inc. violated standard safety practices in an attempt to save time and money and neglected to ensure that the 21-year-old crane operator was qualified. In 2015, a Brazoria County, Texas jury found Berkel & Co. Contractors Inc. as well as the business that owned the crane, Maxim Crane Works L.P., negligent and awarded plaintiff Tyler Lee and his family a record $43,943,006 million verdict, including $8.5 million in punitive damages against Berkel & Co. Contractors Inc. In 2017, the verdict -- the largest single leg amputee verdict in history -- was overturned on appeal due to the Texas Workers Compensation Act. Listen as Chuck Clay shares what this case taught him about hedging his bets, choosing when to settle and much more. Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents Guest Bio: Chuck Clay Chuck Clay represents survivors of catastrophic injuries and the families of victims of fatal disasters and violent crimes. He's built a reputation for taking on cases with a narrow path to victory, overcoming complicated legal challenges, and boxing defendants into optimal settlement resolutions. Always ready for a trial, Chuck has had jury trials across the country. The combination of personality, worth ethic, and fiercely competitive spirit is loved by clients and respected by nearly all. Chuck had record-setting jury awards in Georgia and Texas. As a zealous yet charismatic litigator, he has a knack for connecting with juries and communicating complex issues in plain language that produces extraordinary results. Over the last several years, Chuck has accumulated an impressive string of multi-million dollar recoveries for victims and their spouses. Chuck and his partner Bradley Pratt, enjoy a successful track record for handling complex product liability resolving complicated cases requiring highly specialized knowledge including product defect. Before establishing a plaintiff's firm in 2013, Chuck practiced corporate defense law for 14 years where he defended and mitigated hundreds of disputes on behalf of Fortune 500 companies, product manufacturers, insurers, and countless small firms and individuals. Chuck has litigated cases in more than states, and he's tried numerous multi-million dollar cases. Outside of his practice, Chuck is a frequent lecturer and author on topics such as distracted driving claims, handling catastrophic injury claims, dram shop liability, children's products liability in Georgia and Nevada, jury trial strategy, deposition tactics and strategies, and premises liability claims. TESLA IS BUILDING A MASSIVE BATTERY TO CONNECT TO THE TEXAS POWER GRID "The recent power outages that left millions of Texas residents without power in the middle of a record cold spell has put the focus on the state's mismanaged power grid. As temperatures dropped to below freezing in Texas last month, coal and natural gas power plants, which supply a bulk of the state's electricity, were knocked offline. " ays FutureCAr: "Now the state is getting some help from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk. Bloomberg reports that Tesla subsidiary Gambit Energy Storage LLC is building a giant energy storage battery that will be connected to the state's power grid. The massive battery could power roughly 20,000 homes on a hot summer day. The 100-megawatt energy storage project is being built in Angleton, Texas, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg reported that workers at the construction site discouraged onlookers and attempted to keep the equipment under cover. But a Tesla logo could be seen on a worker's hard hat and public documents confirmed Tesla's role in the project. Bloomberg uncovered property records on file with Brazoria County in Texas show Gambit Energy Storage shares the same address as a Tesla facility near the company's factory in Fremont, California. The airlines and sectors of government are pushing for a biometric "immunity passport" to prove that one is not corona contagious before flying, attending large events, maybe even going to work. LINKS Humus and Clay... http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eAT John Seymour Masanobu Fukuoka Daikon radish Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eB5 Sustainability Through Compost Tea. http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eDW Ten Acres Enough **** This is the World Organic News for the week ending 10th of April 2017. Jon Moore reporting! This week we focus on the soil! From the blog of LaToya M. Crick Soil Food Web Consultant comes a post on humus and clay. Quote: Clay and humus play an important role in soil structure and plant growth, however, too much of one of them is frustrating and too little of the other is a pending death sentence. What is clay? Clay in soil is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material and appears in deposits due to weatherization. ( If you are living in Brazoria County, Texas then you are living on a deposit- ha!) Clay can appear in soil in various colors from white to dull grey or brown to deep orange-red. A clay particle is finer than silt and sand and according to geologist and soil scientist, a clay particle is less than 2 micrometer. And from further in the post: Now, what about Humus? Humus is the end product of decomposed organic matter that was had by soil microbes. It can be seen as the chocolate/black gold of the earth and acts as an anchor for soil nutrients. It appears in color ranging from dark brown to black and smells earthy and is fluffy to the touch. Humus is negatively charged and has a high cation-exchange-capacity (CEC) that helps the soil retain water and positively charged elements that are beneficial to plant health. End Quote The funny thing about clay and all soils for that matter is a thing I learned from John Seymour. It your clay content is too high, add organic matter to your soil. Organic matter, it turns out feeds and creates humus. At the other end of the soil scale: sandy soil the solution is to add (pauses for effect) organic matter which it turns out feeds and creates humus. You can see where this is heading. Clay soils have their own particular needs when it comes to incorporating organic matter. The drill in the olden days, the 1970s, was to dig deeply and bury organic matter. Can you guess what the solution is today? Yep, raised bed no-dig gardens. It turns out the soil is capable of pulling the organic matter down into the clay soils and invigorating them. Clay pans can be a problem. That is hardened clay layers under the level at which the shovel or the plough reached. On acreage sized land units, a ripper can be employed to shatter the pan. This lets water and organic matter into the soil profile. This is especially beneficial when the rips are along the contour lines of the paddock. Masanobu Fukuoka used an alternative method the release these clay pans. He broadcast daikon radish seeds. His compacted clay problem was in an orchard so that ripping was not an option. These radishes grow upto a metre in length and as thick as a man’s forearm. By their very growth habits they loosen compacted soils. Once loosen and with organic matter spread on top, either in no-dog garden beds or spread across paddocks by slashing them or grazing them, the process of humus creation can occur. Clearly this is not a “quick fix” solution but it is one which works with Nature and her rhythms. When that occurs we are moving in the right direction. I might also add here that artificial fertilisers will destroy humic acid in very little time. This means more are needed in the next growing season and so on. The slower Natural way is less expensive too as a rule. Having sorted your soils the next step is to garden. DR. EDDY BETTERMANN MD delivered a post: Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! These are useful and so I’ll repeat them here to pique your interest. Have a read of the article if you need more on this. Link is, of course, in the show notes. Plan your garden before planting your crops, it’ll help you reap the best harvest possible. Less is More It may seem like a good idea to plant every edible plant that you love to eat… but it may be better to start with a small, manageable garden in the beginning. Choose Productive Plants Choose plants that grow well in your climate and geography. Think locally. Share and Barter If you buy a large packet of seeds and have extras, share with your friends and neighbors. Go Organic With Your supplies Organic seeds can be bought locally or by mail order. Do not use chemical pesticides, herbicides, or any other synthetic chemicals. Complement Your Plants Research traditional methods of natural gardening to grow plants that complement one another such as permaculture. Have Fun! Gardening can be an incredibly grounding family affair. Having your garden up and running, the question of feeding or fertilising comes to mind. The blog Permie Flix has a video post this week entitled: ECOSOIL SUSTAINABLE FARMING WITH COMPOST TEA. If that title doesn’t tick all the boxes then I don’t know what will. The video runs for some 30 plus minutes and is well worth your time. Compost teas are a specialised form of liquid fertiliser. The have their adherents and I too am one of them. A particularly interesting book: Ten Acres Enough set in the USA state of New Jersey and written in the 1870s gives a good account of how to make and use liquid fertilisers. I’ve included a link to a pdf copy of this book. Whilst it has financial figures from its time which are basically meaningless now, the how to information is useful. A word of caution, the author advocates for ploughing bare fields between produce crops to increase soil moisture. Apart from that, he makes good sense. Back to the post ECOSOIL SUSTAINABLE FARMING WITH COMPOST TEA. This video is produced with a smallholder, farmer in mind but the principles and techniques can be down scaled to the garden or you could join with fellow gardeners to create larger volumes to use amongst yourselves. I suspect a community garden would also be a good place to centrally produce these teas in bulk. They feed the humus creation process at a good rate of knots. Nudging Nature without pushing her to breaking point. So look after your soil, grow food in it and feed that soil with liquid fertilisers for a blooming good garden! And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! I’d also really appreciate a review on iTunes. This may or may not help others to find us but it gives this podcaster an enormous thrill! Thanks in advance! Any suggestions, feedback or criticisms of the podcast or blog are most welcome. email me at podcast@worldorganicnews.com. Thank you for listening and I'll be back in a week. **** LINKS Humus and Clay... http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eAT John Seymour Masanobu Fukuoka Daikon radish Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eB5 Sustainability Through Compost Tea. http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eDW Ten Acres Enough
