Send us a textStep onto the trails with Oakley Olson, the collegiate steeplechase specialist turned mountain running phenom who's rapidly ascending to the top of the trail running world. Fresh from her selection to the 2025 Trail Team Elite, Oakley shares the remarkable journey that took her from soccer fields to mountain summits.Oakley reveals how a two-mile time trial during soccer practice unexpectedly launched her running career, leading eventually to success at Utah Valley University as a steeplechaser. The conversation explores her breathtaking transition to trail running, where she stunned the community with an 8th place finish at the US Mountain Running Championships at Snowbird and set the FKT on Utah's imposing Mount Timpanogos with almost casual determination: "I just looked at Tim and thought, I want to go do that right now."What makes steeplechase athletes like Oakley so dominant on technical trails? She offers fascinating insights into the mental fortitude required for both disciplines: "When you're trail running, you have to look at the mountain and believe you're going to get to the top. In steeplechase, you need to know you're going to clear every single hurdle." This fearless mindset translated perfectly to her mountain racing success alongside professional athletes.Looking ahead to an exciting 2024 season, Oakley discusses balancing her collegiate track commitments with appearances at Soonapy Scramble, Cirque Series races, and potentially Broken Arrow. Her perspective on competition reveals a refreshing blend of fierce determination during races and genuine camaraderie afterward. "The sport is amazing because of the positive culture we create," she reflects, embodying the spirit that makes trail running special.Whether you're fascinated by the crossover between track and trails, curious about breaking into mountain running, or simply inspired by athletic courage, Oakley's story demonstrates how belief in yourself can move mountains—or at least help you run up and down them very, very fast. This episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction ! Send us a textHawk Call might be the son of OCR legend Hobie Call, but he's rapidly making a name for himself as one of America's most promising mountain runners. After finding success on the track at Utah Valley University with a 14:42 5K PR, Hawk initially followed his father's footsteps into obstacle course racing. However, the explosive growth of trail running soon captured his attention, and in 2024 he established himself as a force in the mountain running scene by winning both the Cirque Series Grand Targhee race and the Speedgoat 28K.Now selected for the prestigious Trail Team Elite 2025 squad, Hawk shares his methodical approach to the sport and his plans to tackle the Golden Trail World Series with races in Italy, Broken Arrow Skyrace, and Austria. What sets him apart is his dedication to sub-ultra distances in a country often fixated on ultramarathons. "I like the sub-ultra scene on the trails," he explains. "They're just short enough where you can push yourself so hard the whole time... if you want to compete and win, you have to go fast the whole time."Despite working full-time, Hawk maintains a rigorous training schedule, rising at 4:30 AM for his first workout of the day. This discipline clearly reflects his father's influence - "One thing I definitely learned from him was it's not a 'have to,' it's a 'get to' kind of thing," Hawk shares, describing the positive mindset that drives his pursuit of excellence.Follow Hawk Call's journey as he aims to close the gap with Europe's elite mountain runners and help grow the American sub-ultra trail running scene. BUFFALO, NY - April 15, 2025 – A new #research paper was #published in Oncotarget, Volume 16, on April 4, 2025, titled “Association between two single nucleotide polymorphisms of the Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase 1 and 2 genes and cell proliferative prostatic diseases in Lebanon." The team of researchers led by first author Brock J. Sheehan and corresponding author Ruhul H. Kuddus, from Utah Valley University, discovered that a specific genetic variation in the PTGS2 gene is associated with a higher risk of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in aging men. The study, which focused on Lebanese men, suggests that the C allele of the -765 G>C polymorphism in the PTGS2 gene may increase risk to this non-cancerous but problematic prostate condition. This finding could help identify men at greater risk earlier and lead to better treatment choices. Benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer are two common conditions that involve abnormal cell growth in the prostate gland. While prostate cancer is malignant and potentially life-threatening, BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement that can still significantly affect quality of life. Both conditions are widespread in older men, with BPH affecting over 70% of men above 60. Researchers have long suspected that inflammation-related genes may play a role in their development. In this study, the focus was to study PTGS1 and PTGS2, genes that help produce enzymes involved in inflammation. Using DNA samples from 168 Lebanese men, including 61 with prostate cancer, 51 with BPH, and 56 healthy controls, the researchers analyzed two common gene variants. They found no link between the PTGS1 variant and either condition. However, the PTGS2 variant showed a strong association with BPH. Men carrying the C version of this gene were more than twice as likely to have BPH compared to those without it. While a similar trend was observed in men with prostate cancer, the results were less conclusive. "The C allele of SNP-765G>C of the PTGS2 gene was significantly associated with an increased risk of BPH (OR = 2.30, p-value = 0.01)." This is the first study to report a genetic link between the C allele of the -765 G>C polymorphism in the PTGS2 gene and BPH in Lebanese men. It builds on earlier findings that associated this gene variant with various cancers, including prostate, colon, and stomach cancers. Although based on a relatively small and specific population, the study offers new insight that could help improve genetic screening and guide prevention strategies. The research also points to the potential benefits of COX-2 inhibitors—drugs already used to treat prostate conditions—which may be more effective for men with certain PTGS2 gene types. Further studies in larger and more diverse groups are needed to confirm these results and explore how this gene variant influences prostate disease. In the future, simple genetic tests could help identify men at higher risk before symptoms appear, allowing for earlier and more personalized care. In this episode of the Real Estate Investing School podcast, host Joe Jensen sits down with 23-year-old investor, hard money lender, and entrepreneur Zeke Mangum. Zeke shares his journey into real estate, starting from his early exposure to the concept of passive income while working with an electrician, to his first deal—a build-to-rent property that didn't quite go as planned. Zeke recounts the challenges of dealing with delayed construction timelines and rising interest rates, ultimately selling the property without a loss but gaining invaluable experience. Despite the setbacks, Zeke remained committed to real estate, moving on to a successful house hack near Utah Valley University that significantly outperformed his initial investment. He explains how his early ventures in door-to-door sales helped him fund his first deals and how his strategy evolved to focus more on creative financing methods like subject-to deals and seller financing. As the conversation unfolds, Zeke discusses his transition into private money lending, where he has built a passive income stream by providing capital to businesses. However, he reveals that his long-term goal is to shift more of his investments into real estate, recognizing the multiple benefits it provides, including appreciation, tax advantages, and leverage. He and Joe also explore the importance of taking action, learning from mistakes, and finding the right investment strategies to align with long-term financial goals. Zeke shares his ambition to acquire a cabin retreat for both personal enjoyment and as an investment property, and he encourages others to focus on mastering one area of investing before diversifying. With a combination of persistence, strategic partnerships, and a growing understanding of creative finance, Zeke is rapidly expanding his portfolio and proving that young investors can make significant strides in the real estate world. One of the bills that the Utah legislature is considering would tell the judicial branch of the government in Utah how to do their jobs. One of the bills being discussed on Utah's Capitol hill this session is taking away some of the powers of a law called GRAMA - the Government Records Access Management Act. Her guests today include Dr. Holly Richardson, Utah Policy Editor and Deseret News columnist, Dr. DeLaina Tonks, Executive Director of Mountain Heights Academy, and Cassie Bingham, Director of the Center for Social Impact at Utah Valley University.
We are watching DOGE - the Department of Government Efficiency - shut down huge departments and cut major programs. One is USAID that provides aid around the world and soft power for the United States in doing so. What about the Department of Education? Should that be done away with? How is this affecting Utah? They discuss the challenges couples face when dividing household labor and how to create a fair and equitable partnership. Dr. Hanks introduces the concept of a partnership model of family organization, emphasizing the importance of communication, shared responsibility, and recognizing invisible work. Listeners will learn how to navigate traditional gender roles, reduce resentment, and establish healthy household dynamics to strengthen their relationships. About Julie: Julie de Azevedo Hanks holds a PhD in marriage and family therapy and is a licensed therapist specializing in the intersection of faith, family relationships, and women's mental health for 3 decades. She is the owner of Wasatch Family Therapy, author of The Assertiveness Guide for Women, host of Ask Dr. Julie Hanks podcast, adjunct faculty in the MSW program at Utah Valley University, and an online content creator. Insights: Julie: "Unpaid work is work, and it's just as important as paid work, and so value the work that you do that's unpaid, and value the work that your partner does that's unpaid. I just think that division has created a lot of problems in families. So, recognize and value unpaid work." Liz: "I think you know how to do the division without creating division, right, without creating more division. And so, I love that I hadn't really thought of unpaid labor and paid work, unpaid work. And paid work, I think, is maybe how you say it, and then coming home, and once the paid worker comes home, then how do we divide work from there? I had never thought of it that way. It's beautiful. It's kind of when that second part of the day begins." Dave: "I think that in addition to unpaid work and paid work, you brought up that kind of invisible or that worrying work, right? That, I think that it needs to be. Hey, thanks so much for planning this out. Or, you know, around the holiday season, my wife, she loves, you know, she takes over, but she loves it, then, you know, buying the presents for the kids, and she's just loves that, but there's a lot of actually mental planning and searching and on Amazon for, I mean, hours and deals. And she loves to get a deal, so I need to be more grateful, I think, as her husband." Nathan Jones, the CEO of Xlear, global leader in creating natural, convenient, xylitol-based sinus and oral care products that support a healthy lifestyle. Nathan was born in Kansas City and he spent his formative years in Idaho, in a small town where his father was the town doctor. When he was 16 years old, the family made another move, this time to Utah which is also where Nathan graduated from high school. He attended college for a year, spent a year in active duty, and also went on a two-year mission with his church. Nathan moved back home in 1994 and started attending Utah Valley University. Later, he made a transition to Seattle where he attended school to become a commercial diver – he used skills from this education when he worked as a diver in oilfields in Louisiana between 1995 and 2000. Nathan then returned to Utah and founded Xlear in order to improve lives by spreading the message of Proactive Health. We discuss it all on Inside Sources. Donald Trump invites Chinese President Xi Jingping to inauguration President-elect Donald Trump is waiting to hear back from Chinese President Xi Jingping after he invited him to attend his inauguration next month. With everything turned upside down, the dream of providing for my family became even more urgent. Attending college became a vital goal, but it also highlighted the immense difficulty of supporting a family while pursuing higher education as a single mother. Finding scholarships and resources was a struggle, but my determination drove me forward. I managed to graduate from Utah Valley University in just two and a half years. Inspired by my journey, my family and I established Live Your Dream, a 501(c)(3) public charity. It brings me healing and purpose to turn my own hardships into a source of support for others. I am deeply grateful for my family, board members, donors, and sponsors who contribute their time and resources to help single mothers achieve their educational goals. Our target population is single mothers who are residents of Utah who desire to gain a higher education. These women may attend college, university, bootcamp, or technical school. We believe that by providing scholarships, we are breaking the poverty cycle for single-mother families in our community. According to census bureau reports, approximately 30% of Utah single mothers live below the poverty level. The Utah Department of Workforce Services reports that "Obtaining a quality education increases employment opportunities, increases lifetime earnings, and supports economic stability for parents and their children.” While raising money for our endowment fund, we are awarding scholarships to deserving women during both the fall and winter/spring semesters. We offer tuition ($2,000- $3,000), fees ($1,000), and book ($500) scholarships. Scholarship recipients may receive the scholarship for multiple semesters. We have an online scholarship application located on our website www.liveyourdreamfoundation.org/apply. The scholarship application deadline for Winter/Spring 2025 semester is November 1, 2024. The scholarship application deadline for spring 2025 semester is November 1, 2024. Since its inception in 2010, Live Your Dream has awarded 317 scholarships totaling $508,539.64. Our scholarship recipients become members of our Live Your Dream Family, benefiting from our foundation's commitment to support them in their educational and life pursuits. We partner with local nonprofits to offer year-round family activities. Generous contributions from our amazing donors enable us to undertake diverse service projects, offering valuable opportunities for both the single moms and their children to participate and benefit. We ensure the provision of essential back-to-school supplies for children from single-mother families and extend holiday support through various means, such as Thanksgiving meals, Christmas gift baskets, Sub for Santa, Mother's Day gift bags, and more. Additionally, we offer care boxes to uplift single moms. Each current recipient receives dedicated peer mentoring, fostering personalized support throughout their academic journey. In our commitment to supporting single mothers, we also facilitate connections with local resources whenever they need additional assistance. We measure our impact through various metrics including the number of scholarships awarded (150% increase from 2021 to 2022), the impact of the scholarships on recipients' educational attainment and financial stability, and feedback from recipients regarding the effectiveness of the support provided. Our scholarships have not only increased the chances of higher education for over 650 children but have also bolstered the confidence of the mothers, showcasing the lasting impact of our support. Because of the scholarships we have awarded, over 650 children have a higher probability of gaining a higher education due to their mothers gaining an education, as supported by the research in Honoring Our Mothers by Seeking Higher Education, Madsen, 2022.
