‘You have an idea and it goes off in another direction and you either pull it back or you go on the journey. I knew I wanted to make some portraits, but I also knew I didn't want to. I wanted to create some tension.' – Barbara Walker   In the second episode of the Frieze Masters Podcast, artists Barbara Walker and Ming Smith, and writer and curator Lou Stoppard discuss the evolution of portraiture and ask how it can better reflect and build community. *Deep Read-ing Lists for each episode are available at public-library.online* My guest today is the writer, curator and broadcaster, Lou Stoppard. Not long after completing a degree at Oxford University and an MA at Central Saint Martin's, Lou was made editor at Nick Knight's pioneering fashion platform SHOWStudio, where became known for her in-depth live interviews with the likes of Kanye West and Wolfgang Tillmans. Since then, Lou has written for The New Yorker, Aperture, and The New York Times, edited books on iconic fashion partnerships and the allure of swimming pools for Rizzoli, and curated exhibitions at London's Somerset House and the Het Nieuwe institute in Rotterdam. I really enjoy Lou's curious, wide-ranging approach to her work, and it was a pleasure to learn more about the ideas and inspirations that have shaped her career.

Harry Styles is home, and he's giving fans a tour of it. On Friday, the former One Direction crooner and now-Grammy winner shared his third studio album, Harry's House, featuring 13 tracks—12 of which are brand new. After already releasing Billboard Hot 100 topper “As It Was” and breaking some streaming records in the process, Styles' latest effort now gives the lead single a home of its own just two years after the release of his sophomore LP, Fine Line. Appropriately, Styles revealed the importance of the album in an April interview withBetter Homes and Gardens, telling writer Lou Stoppard that he's past the point of being concerned if this one is a commercial success anymore. “I just want to make stuff that is right, that is fun, in terms of the process, that I can be proud of for a long time, that my friends can be proud of, that my family can be proud of, that my kids will be proud of one day,” he shared. But, as it looks, Harry's House is poised to once again top the charts, as HITS Daily Double is projecting incredible first-week numbers from Styles, who is expected to crack between 400,000 and 450,000 in week 1 alone. This would beat out Kendrick Lamar's expected first-week numbers for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers to hold the title of best first week of 2022 so far. “I realized that that home feeling isn't something that you get from a house; it's more of an internal thing. You realize that when you stop for a minute,” Styles told BH&G of his album title. Check out Styles' latest LP below and listen to the album's second single, Late Night Talking, up top via YouTube. source: https://www.complex.com/music/harry-styles-harrys-house-release --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

In episode 26, hosts Key (he/they) and Gray (he/him) cover the various Harry Styles happenings from April! They begin by discussing smaller pieces of news, including new tour and festival dates in Australia, NZ, and the UK; Harry's chart positions; the DWD trailer at Cinemacon; and the leaked studio version of Medicine (3:08). Then, they move into the discussion of the newly-released (and extremely yellow) Harry's House tracklist (12:50). Key and Gray in their excitement have claimed a few! Following this, Key and Gray discuss Harry's new profile in Better Homes and Gardens magazine! They first discuss the photos by our old friend Tim Walker (22:20) before moving into a conversation about the content of the interview, written by Lou Stoppard (27:05). (P.S. - there's a little bit of discourse ahead regarding the internet's reaction to the profile which you can avoid by skipping to 56:38). Next, they cover Coachella night one (58:57) and night two (1:19:09). Listen to hear Key flex that he's known the meanings of the rabbits all along. Finally, they round out the discussion with some non-Harry things that have brought them joy over the past week, including Shania Twain's “Come on Over” and the film Everything Everywhere All at Once (1:32:57). In episode 38 of The Great Women Artists Podcast, Katy Hessel interviews the brilliant London-based writer LOU STOPPARD on the ICONIC and TRAILBLAZING street photographer SHIRLEY BAKER (1932–2014) !!!! [This episode is brought to you by Alighieri jewellery: www.alighieri.co.uk | use the code TGWA at checkout for 10% off!] And WOW! This was such an insight into one of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century. A woman who captured 6+ decades of change in post-War Britain: from Manchester in the ‘50s and ‘60s, to the heights of Thatcherism in the ‘80s, and New Labour in the 2000s. A self-proclaimed “idler with a camera”, the fearlessly socially and politically engaged Shirley saw beauty, character and absurdity in the everyday. Documenting those often overlooked or on the outside – much like the artist herself who wasn’t recognised with a major solo exhibition until right at the end of her life at The Photographer’s Gallery – Shirley captured unnamed people who shaped our cultures, as opposed to the places themselves. Highly sensitive to change and the ageing process, Shirley Baker was skilled at observing modernity, whether it be through the rise of industrialism and technology, altering eating habits, or the abandonment of terraced houses in the North between 1955–1973 (after the Housing Repairs and Rents Act), which were abruptly replaced by large looming tower blocks. Always on the frontline of change, she captured moments that felt still amongst a fast-paced world: "I did know that fundamental changes were taking place and nobody seemed to be interested in recording the face of the people or any- thing in their lives. My interest grew into a compulsion even though the notion of someone wandering the unpicturesque streets of Manchester and Salford with a camera seemed quite crazy to most people then." But she also captured the imperfections in people – people who tried to live up to society’s expectations with whom she caught moments when their mask slipped. Wow. So much to unpick here!!! I am in awe of Shirley and Lou's brilliant take on her. An INCREDIBLY aware photographer with a fascinating story which we discuss in depth! ENJOY!!! http://showstudio.com/project/mad_about_the_boy To create a sound installation for the gallery, curator Lou Stoppard asked top fashion DJ Michel Gaubert to lend the soundtrack he created for Raf Simon's Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore S/S 16 show. Cut alongside the track is audio from key male figures within the fashion industry - Charlie Porter, David Sims, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Dylan Jones, Glen Luchford, Nick Knight, Alex Bilmes, Nasir Mazhar and Ben Kirchhoff. The clips focus on the way these men consider youth, their own upbringing and how ideas of the young male are constructed within their work. Some interviews were conducted specially by Stoppard, others were taken from SHOWstudio's rolling In Fashion serie. They were mixed into the track by sound artist Younji Ku.
