Asking John Grant to describe the essence of the record he is working on now, elicits a response that fascinates from the get go. “I'm trying to marry the vibe of Blade Runner with - wait a minute - let me go and get this movie [shows me Tetsu The Iron Man]. I want to blend Sonic Youth with Blade Runner, Evil Dead and Halloween 3”. John was struggling to articulate a few things on the day we met, including the one word essence of this new album project, but I'm going to guess the word that he was looking for was cyberpunk. If you don't know it, Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a 1989 Japanese tokusatsu cyberpunk body horror film created (as in written, produced, edited, and directed) by Shinya Tsukamoto. It's insane and unlike any other movie made then or now. It's an auteur's project and that sums up John Grant better than anything else. The man has a singular vision and for that we can be grateful. We do not want John Grant by way of compromise! And then there is Blade Runner, which I'm guessing you are more familiar with. Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic is an anchor point for Grant, who is influenced by those sweeping, cosmic valve-synth Vangelis soundscapes that cropped up so fully formed on his last album Boy From Michigan - a high watermark record that John feels is only just finished, yet is already almost two years old. In today's music biz, two years is an awfully long time. But then, making the follow-up to Boy From Michigan is not a trivial undertaking. Creativity in John Grant's particular zone of avant garde pop is not an environment in which you can simply turn up at the office and turn on the tap. His world is not always a well-oiled machine. “Guy Garvey told me that creativity is like a pipeline that you have to keep flowing, even if it's just to flush the shit out before you can get to the good stuff”.I do love it when artists listen to artists. Thing is, it doesn't happen enough. For the time being however, if you cannot wait too long for more from John - good news. Grant's alternative supergroup Creep Show brings a welcome escape from the weight of the world - for him and for us. New album Yawning Abyss is due for release June 2023. Creep Show is a wonderful collaboration. With a name inspired by George A. Romero and Stephen King's 1982 film and novel, Creep Show brings together John Grant with the dark analogue-electro of Wrangler (Stephen Mallinder / Phil Winter  and Benge, the latter producing Grant's 2018 album Love Is Magic). The Creep Show project deserves every bit the success achieved by Gorillaz, in a parallel universe in which all music is judged on listenability. Who could not listen to this man's voice?Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Recorded Friday January 8th, 2021 Happy Valentine’s Day, fans! That Horror Show Podcast has a special episode lined up for all you romantics there, especially for the ladies. Oh, la la! Your lovable hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig are ready to serenade you with their review of “The Love Witch” (2016), a film that combines both “love” and “witch” together into a wild cocktail of romance and deadly horror! And, would you believe it, out of all the not-so-hot Valentine’s themed horror your hosts have tackled over the years, “The Love Witch” has managed to win their hearts. Doubt us? Listen in for the review. But wait: that is not all! Also included in this special episode is none other than the triumphant return of the ‘What Have We Watched’ segment. Yes, it’s been dormant since last year, but we decided to bring it back for this outing: listen in as Chris Koenig projectile vomits all over “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), while Timothy Kazda gives Kurt Russell a little love by talking about “The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two” (2020).  Finally another holiday added bonus the long awaited return of the 'Kidz Corner' segment with Nate, where he discusses "Ghostbusters II" (1989). Happy Valentine's Day everyone! #TheLoveWitch #ValentinesDay2021 #WitchLove #THSP #sepn

“So after you have relaxed into the beauties of creation around you, and after you have filled your soul with that beauty and connected to the divine intention that you have your ultimate life and want you to think about what is possible for you to create, through love.” - Kellan Fluckiger  Listen to more episodes of Your Ultimate Life: your-ultimate-life-by-kellan-fluckiger.simplecast.com  What you are about to learnIn every child’s eyes, magic is something that is an extraordinary occurrence that is beyond our imagination. But, what is magic? Magic usually is the stuff that we just don't understand. And so it seems like it can't be explained by what we see. Or what we define as normal experience. And so we call it magic. Now sometimes we dismiss old superstition and stuff that people used to call magic because there's all kinds of now rational explanation. Or we say things can't be so because we don't have a rational explanation. But let's just get back to the fundamental question, do you believe in magic?  As mature people, some of us don’t believe in magic. It’s either we believe or we ignore. Magic is things happening that you cannot explain by your normal understanding of how things work like we all have a normal understanding of how stuff should go through the day whether or not things can happen or they make sense with how we understand the world. And when we go past that, it's in the realm of magic or extraordinary or magic potions. One of the things that we do right now is we live so fast. If you want to experience divinity is to slow down,  and take in what is really around you. What is really part of your life, like when was the last time you completely relaxed and watched a sunrise or when was the Last time you sat and watched a sunset, or participated viscerally in a thunderstorm last night was an opportunity to do that? admit to yourself, the divinity of your own creation. You don’t feel the magic around you because you are living so fast. You ignore the goodness of life. You skip the beauty of what life has to offer. Magic for us old people is no longer believing in the extraordinary and unbelievable things. Magic for us is defined as Magic in love.  The word love with the word magic. Because if there is a power that is as close to magic, if there is a power that is as close to the ability to create or do anything, it is pure love. What can you create? By focusing on love? What can you create by thinking about how magical life really is? I tell you and I challenge you at the same time, I can promise you actually, that the more you do this, the happier you'll be, and the more creative you'll be. And the more you do it, the faster you'll move toward creating your ultimate life.Key Takeaways I can promise you every single time if you choose to take a few minutes and slow down and let the wonders and beauty of the world around you. Just sink into your heart and sink into your soul. And enjoy what's there. You will feel the majesty power And intent of the Creator. Connect with Kellan on your favorite platforms:Facebook: www.facebook.com/kellan.fluckiger3YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/ultimatelifeformulaLinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/kellanfluckigerTwitter:  https://twitter.com/kellanfluckigerYou can find out more about Kellan and how he can help you achieve your ultimate life by checking out his website.Subscribe to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts, iHeartRADIO, or anywhere else you listen to your podcasts. If you haven't already, please rate and review the podcast on  Apple Podcasts

Nearly abandoning his musical career following the breakup of his band the Czars, the US singer-songwriter John Grant went on to find solo success by distilling personal adversity into songs that can be unsparing, poignant and witty – quite often all at the same time. We caught up with him in London fresh off a UK tour for his latest album Love Is Magic. In the podcast, John discusses why he nearly crashed out of music, how he found his creative bearings again and how learning several foreign languages has affected his songwriting.
