In this episode of the Peace Love Moto podcast, we explore the metaphor of a diverse musical playlist—ranging from Billy Idol to Karen Carpenter—to describe the eclectic community of motorcycle riders. We acknowledge the weight of modern-day stresses, from global economic shifts to the rise of AI, and positions motorcycling as an essential emotional rescue. Ultimately, the episode celebrates how a shared passion for riding can bridge societal divides, creating a "wonderful world" where differences in gear, bikes, and backgrounds disappear once the garage door opens and the engine starts. Keywords:Motorcycle CommunityPeace Love MotoRiding HarmonyDiversity in BikingEmotional Rescue Tags: Mindfulness, Motorcycle riding, mindful motorcycling, motorcycle therapy, nature connection, peace on two wheels, Rocky Mountain tours, rider self-discovery, spiritual journey, motorcycle community, open road philosophy.

This week on The McGuigan Brothers Podcast, we unwrap Christmas Portrait. The Carpenters' 1978 holiday classic that didn't just soundtrack Christmas… it became part of it.Billy, Matthew, and Ryan dig into how this album was built slowly across the 1970s at A&M Studios, with Richard Carpenter's meticulous arrangements and Karen Carpenter's once-in-a-generation voice front and center. From the orchestral craftsmanship to the re-recorded version of “Merry Christmas Darling” that defined a season, this episode breaks down why Christmas Portrait outlasted trends, charts, and cultural shifts. We talk studio details, legacy impact, why Karen's voice remains a technical benchmark, and how this album quietly became one of the most enduring Christmas records of all time. No hype on this record. Just precision, warmth, and a record that keeps showing up every December and never wearing out its welcome.

From a massive American flag mural in a gym to an emotional family portrait of people who'd never all been together at once, her work is both impressive and meaningful. She also brought her hetero lifemate Aubrey, who is quietly hilarious and jumps into the mix as we spiral into conversations about perfectionism (Tony feels very seen), why unfinished art and songs haunt your soul, and why Victor, Colorado suddenly sounds like somewhere we all need to move immediately.Elsewhere in this episode:Mike ties (and wears) his first-ever bow tie thanks to YouTubeWe talk gyms, workouts, and health-tracking devices judging us silentlySports talk hits all the majors: football, basketball, baseballChipotle and Starbucks are both adding protein menus… which raises questionsWe debate whether the 1970s might be the greatest music decade ever (yes, Karen Carpenter enters the chat)And we wrap it all up with our Top Five Christmas Songs, because why not?Art, marketing, music, murals, muscle, and mild chaos — this one's got range.

The UK's medicines watchdog has said criminal gangs in the UK have started making their own weight-loss drugs, with packaging and branding designed to look like legitimate products. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has warned that the new trend poses a significant threat. Presenter Clare McDonnell is joined by Sukhi Basra, vice chair of the National Pharmacy Association who also runs a weight loss practice, to dicuss the risks. 'Buy now, pay later' credit schemes are increasingly being used to pay for everyday items like food, bus passes and school uniforms. Leading debt advisors have told the BBC that more women are juggling these debts as they struggle to cope with the cost of living. BBC Yorkshire investigations reporter, Stephanie Miskin, and Rebecca Routledge from debt advice organisation Money Wellness talk to Clare. Jackie Clune is an actor, writer and performer whose eclectic career has included a Karen Carpenter tribute act, Shakespeare, Mamma Mia! and most recently the narrator in a UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show. On screen, she's familiar to many as Motherland's school secretary Mrs Lamb, but she's also written novels and a memoir about unexpectedly becoming a mum to triplets at 39 and finding herself with four children under 19 months. She's now on stage in The Meat Kings! (Inc.) of Brooklyn Heights at London's Park Theatre, playing a tough, no-nonsense boss fighting to keep the family business afloat. She joins Clare to discuss the play, parenting and grief. A rare 500-year-old English parchment birth scroll is to be shown in the UK for the first time following recent pioneering analysis that confirmed its use during pregnancy and childbirth. Cover songs often aren't what they should be. Many are pale and pointless facsimiles of the original songs, and others even take off into some new direction for no reason whatsoever. Rude. So this week the "How We Heard It" guys let their imaginations run wild, freewheeling through music history (from 60-odd years ago to today), mixing and matching some of the most popular songs of all time to an expansive variety of distinctive artists, old and new. They make inspired choices as they spitball ideas, conjuring some songs you just know would be great, some you'd at least want to check out and some that would doubtless be terrible. There are no rules to the game - artists who are long dead could be called upon to cover new songs just as easily as new artists could be called upon to cover old songs (with AI, anything is possible). As a result, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Karen Carpenter and Prince can be called upon just as easily as Lady Gaga, John Legend, Billie Eilish and Benson Boone. Who would cover the Beatles? Who would the Beatles cover? You'll likely be surprised who the guys pick to cover Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," John Lennon's "Imagine," Bette Midler's 'Wind Beneath My Wings," Blondie's "Call Me" and R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" - just to name a few. Find out what very different songs they have in mind for Lana Del Rey to cover and the unthinkably bizarre (albeit tantalizing) pair they'd pick to remake "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. Free your mind and play along.

This week, "How We Heard It" pivots to men singers, going back in time to crooners like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and country legends like Hank Williams and George Jones. From there, the hosts come forward, breezing through classic singer-songwriters like Jim Croce and James Taylor, R&B pioneers such as Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, and all manner of rock singers, including Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury, while pausing to engage in the inevitable Paul McCartney vs. John Lennon debate. The 1980s and 1990s are represented by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Sting, Robert Palmer, Michael Hutchence, Trent Reznor, Vince Gill and Randy Travis. Singers often make or break a song. The exceptional ones can lift a bland arrangement into the stratosphere and the mundane ones can sink a great arrangement like a torpedo. This week the "How We Heard It" guys take a look at women vocalists (men singers will come next week), from the clear-voiced vocalists with perfect enunciation to soul singers who use a ragged edge to add personality. Some are belters, some practically whisper, some float into the atmosphere, and some are Bjork. But the differences between artists are pronounced, even in the sub-categories. Find out why Karen Carpenter hits differently than Barbra Streisand, how Tina Turner persevered, what sets Debbie Harry apart, where Sheryl Crow lands and how Billie Eilish factors in. And the guys are not on the same page on many of these vocalists, from Janis Joplin to Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush to Whitney Houston to Mariah Carey. Some of these women only seem better the more you explore their work, while others don't hold up to a closer listen. Your hosts dovetail, dissent and then dovetail again as they explore women singers from today, yesterday and long ago.

Originally posted December 2021In this episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I sit down with Dena Tauriello, the drummer for Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre. From her first sparkle kit inspired by Karen Carpenter to a career that's taken her from rock arenas to Broadway pits, Dena shares a powerful story about perseverance, adaptability, and passion.Dena spent nearly two decades with the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, logging more than 260 shows a year, signing with Lava/Atlantic Records, and sharing bills with bands like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and The Bangles. Along the way, she learned the grind of life on the road, the frustration of being pigeonholed as “girl music,” and the discipline that comes from playing night after night. Those experiences became the foundation for her eventual move to Broadway. Her first Broadway chair came in Head Over Heels, the Go-Go's jukebox musical that featured an all-female band. From there, Dena's career expanded into multiple productions, including Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls, The Cher Show (as a sub), Magic Mike the Musical (Broadway Lab), and her current run in Little Shop of Horrors. She also subs on Hamilton, Six, and at the origial run of Beetlejuice. In our conversation, Dena opens up about the realities of the pit:* Why no two shows are ever the same and why you can never “phone it in”* The discipline it takes to stay fully present eight times a week* How playing in Antigone Rising prepared her for the demands of Broadway* What she looks for when hiring subs and why paying it forward matters* The role of Ableton, click tracks, and sound cues in modern Broadway drumming* Her full gear setup: Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Promark sticks, and custom in-ears* Why she always keeps charts in front of her—even after memorizing the showDena also talks about the surreal moment of playing on stage with the Go-Go's, interviewing Gina Schock for Modern Drummer, and what it feels like to see the Head Over Heels Playbill now preserved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a conversation filled with honesty, humor, and hard-won lessons for any drummer dreaming of breaking into Broadway—or simply learning how to thrive in the unpredictable world of live performance. For more about Dena: https://www.denatauriello.comClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Liberty DeVitto Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Sitting down with iconic Billy Joel drummer, Liberty DeVitto, after a too-long three-year hiatus was fantastical! Friends since the 80s, I never get enough of Lib's stories and his spectacular storytelling. Hot off the heels of being a major player in the current HBO/MAX Billy Joel doc, And So It Goes, Lib caught us up and filled in the blanks. Over the course of five interviews spanning the last decade, pieces of the story have been uncovered; today, Liberty put them all together. How did Billy's once fierce loyalty wane, replaced with a detached coldness? The reasons stated in the doc, only part of the story. We got the deets, including turning down George Martin in favor of his band, refusing a ride to McCartney's 911 recording session when there wasn't room for Lib in the car, and to an ill-shared secret spilled by Lib's then wife to Billy's then wife, Christie. Liberty's sobriety sobering, and a joy killer to Billy. How the end came down without a word to their longtime bandmates, Russell Javors and Doug Stegmeyer, perhaps responsible for the latter's demise. And how, sometime later, the same fate awaited Liberty. The truth about his lawsuit and why he fought. Elizabeth Weber, Billy's first wife and manager's support, and why she finally chose to speak up and set the record straight. Lib talked about his and Billy's 15-year silence following their 30-year collaboration, their reconciliation, and their ongoing renewed friendship, as Billy faces serious health issues. We got the scoop on his meeting Beatles, Ringo and Paul, playing with them - full circle from their inspiring his life's path. Karen Carpenter, Carly Simon, The Beach Boys, Phoebe Snow, Ronnie Spector, just a few he's shared a studio and or a stage with. How, with Billy's blessing, the original Billy Joel Band, Liberty, Richie Cannata (gratefully recovered from a life-threatening aortic dissection), and Russell Javors, carry on as The Lords of 52nd Street, and how his Slim Kings are amassing a huge following, dropping a new record, and readying to tour. He's got a gorgeous wife, a happy marriage, four thriving daughters, and two grandchildren; he's sober. Life is good! Mine's better with Liberty in it. Adore the man! What do mugshots, horses, and a surprise ride in a Jeep with two strangers have in common? They all show up in this unpredictable and hilarious episode of The JB and Sandy Show. The crew kicks things off with a deep dive into the guilty pleasure that is the Austin Mugshots Instagram account. JB admits he follows it, Sandy confesses he once recognized someone from it—and then drops a bombshell: he has a mugshot of his own from a wild night in Chicago in the '90s. The story involves a Cubs game, a mystery arrest, and two women in a Jeep who may or may not have been angels. Then it's on to the Story We Love, where Tricia shares a heartwarming update from the Austin Police Mounted Patrol, who took their horses for a lake day at Decker Lake. The horses swam, posed for photos, and even helped their handlers do backflips off their backs. Tricia, a self-proclaimed horse girl, is obsessed—and maybe a little in love with the idea of a motorcycle cop on horseback. The episode also features:A check-in on Phil Collins (he's fine, not in hospice).A debate over famous drummers who became frontmen.A hilarious moment where a guy pets a cop's leg instead of the horse. And a tribute to the unsung heroes of crowd control: horses.

Banned shortly after its release due to music rights issues, this 1987 short film remains a powerful and controversial portrait of fame, control, and self-destruction.We'll unpack the film's bold aesthetic choices, its unflinching depiction of eating disorders, and how it reimagines the biopic format through subversive storytelling and emotional minimalism. We also discuss the legacy of Karen Carpenter's voice, the role of media in shaping celebrity identity, and why this film continues to resonate despite its legal exile.Tune in as we explore what makes Superstar both a daring piece of unauthorized art and an unforgettable elegy to a voice silenced too soon.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. On February 4, 1983, Karen Carpenter — the angelic voice behind The Carpenters and one of the most recognizable vocalists of the 1970s — died at the age of 32. With timeless hits like Close to You and We've Only Just Begun, Karen's warm contralto and vulnerable delivery defined a generation of soft rock and pop, even as she quietly battled a devastating eating disorder behind the scenes. Her death from heart failure due to complications of anorexia nervosa shocked the world, bringing unprecedented attention to the disease—yet her music endures as a poignant reminder of both her extraordinary gift and her silent struggle. Sarah is showing what can happen when you put yourself out there and we're here for it. We debate whether a baseball player who is banned from the sport should still be eligible for the Hall of Fame (aka Pete Rose). Sarah begins on one side of the argument, but Susie persuades her to change her mind. We discuss the Karen Carpenter documentary that shows what led to her death by eating disorder, how her family dynamic played a role, and why disordered eating is a spectrum of severity. We talk about the guy who smoked 800 cigarettes in 6 minutes, and why the Guinness Book of World Records disqualified him, and we hear about other odd record holders who defied death. We celebrate the baseball player who recently played for BOTH teams in the same game, and how that was able to happen. And we learn about the first woman to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, and why sexism cause her to leave the sport.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to http://www.honeylove.com/BRAINCANDY! #honeylovepodHead to https://moshlife.com/BRAINCANDY to save 20% off plus FREE shipping on the Best sellers Trial Pack.
