TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! Although he's based in Iceland, singer/songwriter John Grant is American, and his experience growing up gay in a conservative religious family in Colorado has colored his music since he began releasing solo records in 2010. A former member of the Denver-based alternative rock band The Czars, he's recorded with the Texan folk rock group Midlake, collaborated with countless others, and is also a festival curator, noted polyglot, author, and translator. Grant's own songs range from bangers to ballads, usually shot through with sharp streaks of mordant wit. That's the case with his latest record The Art of the Lie which also features lots of electronics and some processing of the voice. John tells stories and performs unplugged versions of his tunes, in-studio. Set list: 1. Grey Tickles Black Pressure 2. Touch and Go 3. Zeitgeist

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two songwriters whose music bursts with personality, but in oddly different ways: CMAT and John Grant. CMAT is the stage name/alter ego of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, who's already hit it pretty big in her native Ireland with funny, frank, and flamboyant songs about break-ups and time travel and everything in between, I guess you might say. She was recently nominated for a BRIT Award for Best International Artist—she wore a jaw-dropping dress to the ceremony—and her second album, Crazymad, For Me went to number one in her home country as well. Now she's ready to take on the States a bit, to see if her music—queer-friendly, over-the-top pop—can make as big a splash here. Check out “Where are Your Kids Tonight,” which features today's other guest John Grant, and catch CMAT on tour in the US right now. Dates are at cmatbaby.com. John Grant is a tough guy to explain: On the surface, his music can sound like party-friendly electro-pop, but the themes and lyrics run deep and often pretty intense. Grant started out in the Denver band The Czars, but it wasn't until he spread his wings as a solo artist—starting with 2010's Queen of Denmark, which he made with help from members of the band Midlake—that he really found his unique voice. Since then it's been a series of fascinating records with a series of fascinating collaborators, including Cate Le Bon, who produced his 2021 album Boy From Michigan. Grant just announced the release of his sixth album, The Art of The Lie. It comes out in June, and it promises a no-punches-pulled look at America in 2024, yet with some funk to help ease the medicine. Check out the song “It's a Bitch” right here, and you can pre-order the whole record at johngrantmusic.com. In this conversation, Grant and CMAT have pretty dissimilar demeanors—she's brash, he's a more quiet sort of intense—but it works: Clearly these two are fans of each other's work, as you'll see, and they have a great chat about language, the ugliness of social media—especially for queer and/or female artists—and CMAT's ass crack, which was “pixelated by the Daily Mail.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to John Grant and CMAT for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

The Autumns, Beach House, The Dears – fucking love The Dears, Dirty Three, Emmy the Great, Fionn Regan Howling Bells, John Grant, Lanterns on the Lake, Laura Veirs, Lift to Experience, Midlake, The Walkman…For the last 25 years, Bella Union have been responsible for bringing me some of the best music I've ever heard. And before that, the label's owner, Simon Raymonde, in tandem with Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie in the immortal Cocteau Twins, was responsible for bringing me even more. I can't imagine what my listening habits would look like without Simon and without Bella Union, and so I'm delighted to speak to him on this episode about all of the above and more. We talk about the band Simon is currently managing – the brilliant Big Joanie – how Bella Union came to be, his thoughts on the legacy of his old band the Cocteau Twins, his feelings on where the record business finds itself in 2023, his forthcoming memoir, and his posthumous relationship with his father, the late, great Ivor Raymonde. How great? I mean, he wrote the Dusty Springfield song 'I Only Want to Be with You'! Keeping with their folk tale theme, The Cru dive into tales of the false bride. Stories feature the joys of child...birth?; the adventures of the "Blue Bullet" and her actress; a medieval wedding; and a story that melds the themes of the prompt with "Young Bride" by Midlake. (Definitely give this song a listen!) From The Standard Dictionary of Folklore, Mythology, and Legend, 1949 ed. false or substituted bride: A very widespread folktale motif in which a beautiful young bride-to-be is ousted by an ugly or treacherous impostor Who foists herself off on the unsuspecting husband. In some versions the servant girl who accompanies the bride gets rid of her en route to the wedding, throws her in a river or pushes her into a well (where she thrives in the care of an underworld queen until the right moment for vindication and retribution arrives). Sometimes a stepsister, often with the connivance of the stepmother, ousts the bride of a prince or king, gets rid of her in some fashion (such as transforming her into an animal, throwing her into a river, or reducing her to a menial station), and marries the king herself. Stories begin around the 13:30 mark.

We welcome the beautiful and amazing Linda Septien who is truly one of the best voice instructors in the world. She is the CEO and Founder of Septien Entertainment Group in Addison, Tx.She has over 35+ years of experience, whose success is measured by the number of successful pop icons she has prepared, trained and helped launch into thriving careers. Named on the cover of the Dallas Observer as the “Kingpin of Pop Talent, Linda is the forefront authority on all phases of launching an artist's career including vocal technique, vocal disorders, vocal production, stage presence, vocal branding and viral marketing for all ages of artists. With over 17,287 students to her legacy, including branded icons Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Kacey Musgraves, Kidz Bop, Ryan Cabrera, Leon Bridges and Jessica Simpson, among other “cash producing” artists, Linda prides herself on her ability to recognize talent & create an effective development strategy to launch a branded long term career artist.Linda was born and raised in Louisiana by a family of musicians and her now 96 year old mother who still performs Ragtime. She has a nephew who is in a band called Midlake that is signed on the Tupac Label. Both her sons Remington and Huntington are musicians as well. Linda tells us what it means to be an opera singer and that they hire you by your voice. She travelled all throughout Italy and Croatia and became a DIVA! Thinking she was all that in her late 20's she returned to Nashville and decided to record a commercial pop album, only to be told by the producer that she was absolutely terrible. He told her to become a Diesel Sniffer "GROUPIE" to learn what it truly takes. She toured with N'Sync for a while, Rolling Stones and anyone she could find - she started studying all the artists in detail and she wrote books on why the audience looked at these Stars and what caused that phenomenon. While she studied all these people she realized that this was not her at all and decided to teach and give all her knowledge to others instead. She tells us about The "IT" factor and how things change in music and gives us the example of Dance Monkey who put an effect on her voice and it became the Number 1 song worldwide for an entire year. Linda made her home in Dallas because her ex husband Rafael Septien, who she met in college was signed with the Dallas Cowboys. They were together for 15 years. She started teaching out of her home and then opened a small studio. Jessica Simpson was one of her first students whose Dad brought her to Linda because Jessica was the only one that didn't make the Mickey Mouse Club audition. At the time Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Britney Spears had all made it. We learn all about Jessica's start in the Christian Music Industry and why the Christian audience didn't accept her. We hear about a mishap that happened to her during her opening performance for Ricky Martin in Madison Square Garden. Working with Colombia and Sony Records made Linda really well known and she got Beyonce and everyone that Sony was using back then. What really put her on the map was Daniel Coile who wrote the New York Bestseller TALENT CODE, who was at her studio for 6 weeks to study how she creates and teaches these amazing artists. They were on Nightline and PR took over and because her story was the most interesting they got the most PR and attention. Everyone needs to read the book. Linda says that if her students don't have the work ethic there is not much she can do. She can tell them everything she knows but ultimately they still have to do all the work. She tells us about a studentthat was the most talented she has ever had, who refused to do the extra work and she tore up her contract and stopped working with her. Linda talks about Matthew McConaughey book GREEN LIGHTS and that everyone needs to listen to it on audible and it will make you successful. In today's world you have to have personality to go along with your musical talent and that the ones that are most successful are the ones that do not care about what others think. That is what it takes. Linda has sang the National Anthem over 1000 times at Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars games to mention a few. stay tuned to Part 2 where we talk about The other side of Fame, the Metaverse, NFT's, Demi Lavato etc ..................

Eric Pulido, front man for indie rock pioneers Midlake, joins Rhett on this episode to talk about celebrating failure, finding balance while grappling with ambition, and recognizing the moment when you have to take a leap of faith. Eric tells Rhett about the inspiration behind their song Bethel Woods, and shares the advice he would give to his younger self.Indie Folk Rock pioneers Midlake formed in Denton, Texas, in 1999. Currently comprised of Eric Pulido, McKenzie Smith, Eric Nichelson, Jesse Chandler, and Joey McClellan, the band's 5th studio album For the Sake of Bethel Woods was released on March 18th, 2022. Midlake recently released their fifth studio album, For the Sake of Bethel Woods. It's their first album since 2013's Antiphon, and the second to feature guitarist Eric Pulido on vocals after founding frontman Tim Smith left the band in 2012. Having gone on hiatus at the end of the Antiphon touring cycle, the idea of making new music was first floated in 2019. The deal was sealed when keyboardist/flautist Jesse Chandler had a dream in which he was visited by his father, who'd recently passed away. In that dream his dad said it was time to get the band back together. Jesse's dad Dave is on the cover of For the Sake of Bethel Woods, captured at the age of 16 at Woodstock, and we talk about that image in this interview, as well as that dream. We also talk about the themes around the new record, the band's hiatus, Eric's upbringing and path into Midlake and more.

Eric Pulido of Midlake takes a deep dive into his songwriting process on today's episode. Pulido is an avid runner, and we talk a lot about how that four mile loop in the local park is a great way to both get out of a rut and conjure up new ideas. Midlake's latest album is called For the Sake of Bethel Woods (ATO Records).
There was no guarantee we'd ever see another Midlake album. The eight year gap since their last album was more than a simple break before records. Tim Smith's departure in 2012 left the band with a major gap to fill, suddenly staring down life without a princjple songwriter. Eric Pulido stepped into the role, and the band scrapped two years of recordings, in favor of starting from scratch with Antiphon. The band's fourth full length was well-received, but its future remained uncertain. The intervening years have found its members focusing on side projects and other life pursuits. Plans to reunite were temporarily thwarted – along with everything else – by the pandemic, but this month, the group returns with For the Sake of Bethel Woods. It's a deeply personal record and the sound of a rediscovering why they started in the first place.

In 2006 Midlake set the bar for lush, thought-provoking indie rock with their album The Trials of Van Occupanther. On For The Sake Of Bethel Woods, their first album in eight years, the newly invigorated group is acknowledging the power of their earlier work while looking ahead to a limitless future of sonic innovation and pastoral existentialism. Joana nos presentó las siguientes canciones: "How to Make You Love Me". "Easy". "Demons". "You're with Me Everywhere I Go". Con esta canción nos despedimos por hoy. In this episode, we welcome the excellent Nick Coleman into RBP's snug virtual cupboard. Barney, Mark & Jasper quiz Nick about his distinctively personal music writing for the NME, Time Out and the Indie on Sunday, with especial reference to his 1986 interview with jazz-soul siren Anita Baker. This leads seamlessly to discussion of his terrific 2017 tome Voices: How a Great Singer Can Change Your Life, as well as to the harrowing experience of hearing loss that inspired 2012's The Train in the Night. In this episode, it was impossible to ignore the death of monstrous megalomaniac and murderer Phil Spector. After hearing a chilling audio clip of him speaking to Roy Carr in 1975, Nick and his hosts attempt to separate the man from the visionary architect of the "Wall Of Sound". (Now a certified psychotherapist, Nick compares Spector's narcissistic personality disorder to that of Donald Trump, who finally vacated the White House the day before this recording.) We also bid farewell to Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher, whose lyric for 'The Message' made rap superstars of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and played a huge part in the birth of "conscious hip hop".Somewhat less megalomaniacal than Spector is Miles Copeland III, whose rapid-fire voice we hear in audio clips from 1989. The man who seemed fated to follow in his dad's C.I.A. footsteps tells John Tobler how bankruptcy made him switch from Wishbone Ash to Wayne County – and how he launched I.R.S. Records as a home for R.E.M., the Go-Go's and Fine Young Cannibals. Finally, Mark talks us through his highlights among the 100+ new arrivals in the RBP library, including Dan Nooger reviewing our previous podcast guest John Simon live at Max's Kansas City in 1972; Mary Harron explaining U.K. punk to her U.S. readers in 1977; and Deanne Stillman reporting on America's enduring heavy-metal subculture in 1991. Jasper concludes matters with passing remarks on avant-jazz enigma Albert Ayler and the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest, staged in the tiny Irish town of Millstreet…Many thanks to special guest Nick Coleman; The Train in the Night and Voices are published by Penguin. The Rock's Backpages podcast is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.Pieces discussed: Donald Fagen, Anita Baker, How to be Keef, Phil Spector audio, Phil Spector, Phil Spectorer, Phil Spectorest, Miles Copeland audio, Herb Alpert, U.K. punk, Blondie, Heavy Metal Mania, Bob Dylan, John Simon, Al Green, CDs vs LPs, Harold Budd, Midlake, Marc Zermati, Ant & Dec, Albert Ayler and the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest.
