Books entertain us but they also build us into the people we are. This conversation with Geoff and Janet Benge is about the kind of books that can change a family for good. In this warm and deeply encouraging episode, Ginny talks with the husband-and-wife team behind the bestselling Christian Heroes Then and Now and Heroes of History series about how true stories form courage, imagination, resilience, and faith, often in ways we don't even notice until years later. Their own story is remarkable too: two unlikely writers from New Zealand—one dyslexic, one once in remedial reading—who went on to write dozens of biographies that have shaped readers around the world. This episode is a beautiful reminder that shared reading is never just educational; it becomes part of the fabric of a home. When I first heard "Mekana discussing a case of adultery", I really wanted to know more about the background to the recording. My research led me a to 1983 Granada Television Programme from the Disappearing Worlds Series which introduced the idea of "Benge", the poison oracle used by the Azande People of Central Africa to answer questions relating to, amongst others, infidelity. It was also vividly described by Evans-Pritchard as the process of administering poison to a baby chicken and waiting to see if it died or survived to determine guilt or innocence. Everything I watched or read focussed on the process of reaching this verdict, but there was never an exploration of the actual people involved. There must be a story behind these cases of forbidden love, in a culture where such feelings were prohibited and sometimes punishable by death. I wanted "Broken" to tell the story of this forbidden love, the feelings of loss the accused must have felt as they discovered they could never share a life together, but at the same time being indelibly connected throughout the rest of their lives. I try to paint that picture within the lyric whilst also acknowledging the cultural relevance of Benge with references of poison, feathers and confessions. The qualities of the wax recording are a perfect backdrop and can be consistently heard throughout. This helps to contextualise the themes of the song, particularly in terms of history, culture and tradition.Mekana discussing a case of adultery reimagined by Simon Holmes.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. Segment 1 – News and Notes1. The Dodgers made a splash by signing Kyle Tucker to the largest AAV in history – 4 years and $240 million with opt-outs after 2027 and 2028.8.a. A lot of people are upset about the dominance of the Dodgers. “They are ruining baseball!” What say you?b. Were you surprised that Tucker signed a shorter deal but for more money?c. The odd thing is that he's not even the best player on the team, maybe not even the top 3 players on the team.d. I don't see any playing time loss for anyone with the exception of a potential delay in the arrival of Josue DePaula or Zyhir Hope. Do you see anything?2. The Mets were spurned by Tucker and pivoted to Bo Bichette, signing him to a massive three-year, $126 million deal with a unique opt-out clause. He can opt out after each year, and if he does, the Mets have to pay him a $5 million bonus. a. $42 million a year for Bichette? Thoughts on the signing?b. He'll likely play third base. Who sits out of Baty or Vientos?c. Also, I think Jett Williams needs to learn the outfield, plus, with the Mets not getting Tucker, Benge is still safe – for now. Thoughts?3. A small but interesting, three-way trade was pulled off by the Angles, Rays and Reds. The Rays sent Josh Lowe to the Angels and Gavin Lux to the Rays, with the Reds acting as the intermediary. The Angels shipped RHP Chris Clark to Tampa Bay and LHP Brock Burke to Cincinnati.a. Who's value goes up more? Lowe, Lux, or neither?b. Does this open a chance for Jacob Melton in Tampa?c. Will Lux ever be more than an afterthought?Segment 2 – Third Base Rankings for the 2026 Season1. How are you approaching this position for your upcoming drafts?2. We will break down the top 15 to 20 in detail. Then, go through 20 to 30 in less detail. We will end by jumping around the remaining ranked players.3. Which player not in the Top 10 has a chance to emerge there next season?4. Which Top 10 player will not be there next season?5. Give me a couple of sleepers6. Give me one, maybe two guys you are just going to avoid drafting?

BT and Sal discuss Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns' recent press conference, where he acknowledged the team "can't run it back" and was transparent about the Brandon Nimmo trade. While both hosts appreciate Stearns' conviction, the conversation turns fiery over Stearns' statement about using young internal options like Carson Benge and Jett Williams, along with Jeff McNeil, to fill the vacated outfield spots. Sal argues that given the Mets are trying to win now, they "can't take a chance in center field" with unproven prospects, citing the Yankees' struggles with Volpe as a cautionary tale. BT, however, argues that every good team relies on young players and the Mets would be "stupid" to plug two outfield holes and block their kids. They debate the need for a "big outfielder" acquisition like Bellinger while keeping one spot open for the youth movement.
The conversation delves into the critical offseason for the Mets, focusing on the potential return of key players Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, and how their status will influence fan sentiment towards David Stearns. The discussion highlights the divide among fans and the potential for shifting opinions based on player retention. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of English synth-pop band Blancmange (as well as some other general stuff) in (just over) thirty minutes.Formed in Harrow, London, in 1979 by vocalist Neil Arthur and instrumentalists Stephen Luscombe and Laurence Stevens, the group's name derived from the milky pudding of the same name. Stevens left shortly after the band was formed, and Arthur and Luscombe continued as a duo. They released their first EP, Irene and Mavis in 1980, but widespread exposure came via the track 'Sad Day' featuredon the Some Bizzare compilation album released in 1981. This led to them signing with London Records. Luscombe passed away in 2025 and this episode is dedicated to his contribution to the arts and culture. This is also the final episode of Season 4. Season 5 will begin in February 2026 when I hope you will join us again for more cultural rummaging. To make a classic blancmange, you combine milk, sugar, and a thickening agent (typically cornstarch or gelatin), flavour it with vanilla or other essences, cook until thickened, and then chill until set. Literacy begins with embracing the whole child, says Stacy Benge, an expert on early literacy and a proponent of child-led learning. Her mission to help educators approach literacy in a way that builds confident, curious, lifelong learners. In this podcast, Stacy defines child-led learning (and dispels myths about it), including the difference between child-led and adult-led learning. Stacy also explains how child-led learning develops skills essential to literacy, and go through each of them: language, visual perception, phonological awareness and physical development. She recommends 90 minutes of uninterrupted time in which children are completely in control."When I was in the classroom, I found that that's when most of my behavior issues released," she says. Stacy also describes how listeners can create spaces that promote child- led play and connect all types of play to literacy development!"Play is that critical piece for that language to develop. I always say a quiet classroom does not produce language," says Stacy. To learn more about Stacy and her work, visit www.stacybenge.com. Instead, he relied solely on prayer and faith in God to provide the necessary resources, a testament to his unwavering belief that God would supply all his needs. The Benges highlight various instances where Muller's faith was tested, yet he continued to trust in divine provision.Throughout the biography, the authors emphasize Muller's devotion to prayer, his systematic approach to reading the Bible, and his commitment to sharing the Gospel. His story illustrates themes of faith, generosity, and the power of belief in overcoming obstacles. The biography also includes anecdotes of miraculous provisions during times of financial need, illustrating how Muller's faith brought hope to many. The Benge's narrative captures not only the impact of Muller's work but also the profound faith that underpinned his endeavors, making it an encouraging read for those interested in Christian history and the importance of compassionate service.Chapter 3 George Muller AuthorJanet and Geoff Benge are noted authors who specialize in writing biographies of influential historical figures, focusing primarily on Christian missionaries and leaders. Stacy Benge is an ECCN favorite. She is a frequent presenter at our events and we enjoy having her on the podcast from time to time. She's the author of “The Whole Child Alphabet: How Children Actually Develop Literacy” – linked in the show notes. She is passionate about whole-child development and shares her knowledge readily with practical, engaging, and fun content. Stacy has a master of science degree in Human Development, over a decade of experience in the classroom, and another twenty years of consulting, training, and research in early childhood spaces. Our conversation today focuses on physical development as a foundation for literacy development! Stacy is going to share with us just how important it is to allow children to engage in free movement and play to develop the necessary physical skills for literacy. We will touch on topics such as the long-term consequences of restricting physical movement in early childhood and the need for early childhood educators to understand and communicate the value of physical development to parents and administrators. Through the conversation today, we will learn that trusting children's intuitive need for movement is key to supporting their overall development. Stacy's focus on whole child development just makes sense when you think about how God designed little bodies to grow. In our quest to help children reach their full potential, we sometimes skip to the things that we can control, right? Stacy always reminds me that the simple things matter – sometimes they matter the most! Crawling, climbing, spinning, running, leaning, reaching, grasping…all of these simple things that happen when children are playing are actually the foundation of literacy skills. When we curate environments that allow and encourage movement in children, we're actually helping them become better readers and writers in the future. Aron welcomes Ted Benge to the podcast this week. Ted is the new owner of Capitol Peak Outfitters in Colorado. Mike Herne drew a mountain goat tag in that area, and Aron reached out to see about CPO packing them in on horseback. That led to Aron and Ted striking up a great conversation and we decided to get Ted on to talk Capitol Peak and even some of the things going on in Colorado as far as conservation and wildlife management is concerned. Great time having Ted on the show! We are proud to partner with some of the best companies in the industry. Our guest today is Stacy Benge. If you've attended any of our summer conferences over the last few years, you've probably heard from Stacy! She is an early childhood speaker who approaches learning in the early years with practicality and common sense. Standing firm on the truth that children learn best through simple, authentic experiences, Stacy advocates for child-led play to build solid foundations for child development. In addition to a Master of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Stacy spent a decade teaching children ages birth to five and has spent the last two decades sharing her passion for child development with fellow early learning professionals with enlightening and informative presentations, and is the author of "The Whole Child Alphabet." We dive deep into the topic of school readiness versus child development. Stacy and I start the conversation by discussing the importance of prioritizing child development and child-led play over school readiness and academic instruction. Stacy shares an emphasis on the need to focus on the foundations of literacy and other developmental skills before introducing formal instruction. She also shares with us her thoughts on the myth of pre-packaged curriculums and the importance of designing curricula around the interests and needs of individual children. Together, we highlight the significance of respecting and valuing children's play as a crucial aspect of their learning and development. I just love Stacy's passion and advocacy for whole-child-development. She really wants what's best for children to be the top priority in our decision-making and in our daily practice in the classroom. I'm so excited for y'all to meet her in person at our summer state conferences this year. She'll be one of our Thursday keynote speakers! Stacy regularly shares helpful information about child development and best practices for the whole child. What I love about today's conversation with Stacy is the regular reminder that children are learning All. The. Time. Not just when they're being “instructed.” It's wild to think about that – every single experience a child has is forming them into who they will eventually be. Trying to force them to learn to read or write before they are developmentally ready will actually slow down their academic progress later on and could lead to lifelong frustration with literacy. It's mind-blowing to think about all the development that needs to happen before a child can successfully read and write. My challenge to you is that you take a moment and just slow down…what are the children learning in your classroom right now? How does that link to literacy? I BET you can name 10 ways after today's conversation! You can connect with Stacy via her Instagram or her website Stacy also has a course in our Learning Library! As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram and on Facebook

Today I am chatting with Stacy Benge, an early childhood speaker who approaches learning in the early years with practicality and common sense. Stacy is the author of the new book, The Whole Child Alphabet: How Young Children Actually Develop Literacy, published by Exchange Press. Listen as we talk about how young children actually develop literacy skills. Key Takeaways: Understanding the Role of Alphabet in Literacy: Stacy and Kristen emphasize that while the alphabet is important for literacy, it's just one component among many. Shifting Perspective on Alphabet Learning: Stacy suggests instead of viewing alphabet learning as a matter of teaching, to see it as a process of development. Children need to develop foundational skills before they can effectively learn the alphabet, and play-based activities support this development. Encouraging Play-Based Learning Environments: Stacy and Kristen give ideas on how to create environments rich in open-ended materials and opportunities for child-led play. These environments support the development of literacy skills in a natural and meaningful way. Balancing Play-Based Learning with Curriculum Requirements: Stacy and Kristen acknowledge the challenge of balancing play-based learning with curriculum requirements. Stacy suggests finding ways to incorporate play into structured activities and advocating for the importance of play in achieving curriculum goals. Are you feeling the pressure that children need to learn the alphabet in certain ways that doesn't feel developmentally appropriate? Then this episode is for you and the stakeholders in your program.
