A theater director gathers a troupe of actors to celebrate their small town's 150th anniversary. Listen as we chat about the movies that Warner Bros. dumped on YouTube, how Missourians say the name of their state, and the best actor in Red, White, and Blaine. Then we find out if Waiting for Guffman stands the Test of Time.
After the huge success of the original Gremlins, Warner Bros quickly wanted a sequel. The people who'd actually made Gremlins, not least director Joe Dante? The thought of making another was not in the slightest big appealing. Until, many years later, the studio made Dante an offer: if you make Gremlins 2, you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. This is the story of how the ensuing film became one of the most boldest blockbuster sequels of all time. Later in the same decade, Christopher Guest took a small company of actors down to Texas for a month. On a modest budget, he shot over 50 hours of footage, that'd take over a year to edit into a feature film. Even when the resultant movie, Waiting For Guffman, was finished, it took a long time to earn its reputation as a modern comedy classic... Stories of both films are told in this episode. To quote one of the greatest movies of all time, Waiting For Guffman... "It's the day of the show, y'all!". That's right, Dean's memoir "Prairie Man" is officially launched! And we're so honored to spend this morning (taped on July 25th) talking about how he got here and realizing this is just the beginning of the beginning! We answer many of your fantastic listener questions sent in as a part of the Facebook Live event Pamela hosted with Dean for LittleHouseOnthePrairie.com this past Monday June 24th. (If you'd like to see the entire conversation, the link to the Facebook video is below). Finally, we hear about Alison's French escapades at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival with several fellow cast members including Matthew Labyorteaux and Melissa Sue Anderson. They wined, they dined, they were weirdly color-coordinated. But the real question is, did Alison end up buying some of those Margaritas for Melissa Sue Anderson? Like its obvious predecessor WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, the new THEATER CAMP is an improv-heavy mockumentary about a cash-strapped theatrical operation — but in this case at least there's real talent in the mix, thanks to the many gifted child actors populating the AdirondACTS summer program for aspiring young performers. This leaves THEATER CAMP's adult cast, some of them former child actors themselves, free to lean into self-satirizing buffoonery while maintaining a degree of sincere admiration for theatrical weirdos everywhere. We dig into the ups and downs of that tonal balance in THEATER CAMP before comparing it to GUFFMAN's own blend of affection and condescension toward amateur theater, the people who make it, and the audiences who respond to it, as well as how the mockumentary style has evolved in the years separating the two films. And in Your Next Picture Show, we use the presence of Molly Gordon and Ayo Edebiri in THEATER CAMP as an excuse for a mini bonus episode on a recent season of TV that also features both: THE BEAR. The new Sundance favorite THEATER CAMP, which uses the mockumentary format to lovingly skewer amateurs pursuing their theatrical dreams, is clear in its homage to WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, a comedy whose own skewering of wannabe actor types is somewhat less loving. Our revisitation of Christopher Guest's 1996 film considers GUFFMAN's tricky tonal balance of satire and sincerity, along with the benefits and limitations of both its mockumentary format and improvisation-based filming style, and whether we should read condescension or admiration into Guest's portrayal of Corky St. Clair and the small town that adores him. And in Feedback we tackle a reading of ASTEROID CITY that we hadn't considered, courtesy of an astute listener. Celine Song's new slow-burn drama PAST LIVES is an unrequited-love story in the same way John Carney's slow-burn musical drama ONCE is — that is, just on the surface. But each film's central would-be romance is a delivery device for deeper ideas about the weight of carrying nostalgia for past relationships and always wondering “what if?”. We're joined once again by David Chen of DecodingEverthing.com to talk through PAST LIVES and how it functions as a different kind of immigration narrative, and the way it connects to ONCE in its depiction of sublimated longing, creative pursuits, and the language barriers that both unite and divide. And in Your Next Picture Show we take a brief look back through the many, many unrequited-love stories we've covered on this podcast over the years. It's Season 6 bay-bay! Who knew we'd make it 6 seasons?! Rach kicks off this summer with one of her top 5 faves and cult classic, Waiting for Guffman. Haven't seen it? Never heard of it? Buckle up for Season 6! *Note: We recorded the first few episodes of this season before the passing of our daughter, Ophelia. While we considered editing it out, we were filled with such joy and it felt like we would be erasing that part of our journey. Projects like Summers Off provide us with a connection to our creative spirit and each other. Thank you for listening. This season is extra special.
WAITING FOR GUFFMAN does something The Office and Parks and Recreation could not: It walks a line between mocking life in Blaine, Missouri, and memorializing it without getting all sentimental. In this episode, we cut away for a few talking head segments that dive into the mockumentary's pacing, focus, and empathy for the weirdos whose talent is outweighed by their desire to be somebody. “For The Love of Small-Town Community Theater” by Lucas Vonasek for Perisphere, the Trylon blog: https://www.perisphere.org/2023/06/09/for-the-love-of-small-town-community-theater/ “Sisyphus, Make Way for Corky's New Philosophy of Failure” by Veda Lawrence for Perisphere, the Trylon blog: https://www.perisphere.org/2023/06/09/sisyphus-make-way-for-corkys-new-philosophy-of-failure/ Parker Posey's deleted audition scene from WAITING FOR GUFFMAN: https://youtu.be/7jQ0SbWYdgQ “Waiting for Guffman movie review” by Roger Ebert: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/waiting-for-guffman-1997 Get tickets to ALL HAIL PARKER POSEY (June 2023 at the Trylon): https://www.trylon.org/films/category/all-hail-parker-posey/ Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/trylovepodcast and email us at trylovepodcast@gmail.com to get in touch! Our Mick is a big fan of strength training these days, and so she was delighted to jump on the Zoom with writer Rebecca F John to hear all about real-life Welsh strongwoman Kate Williams, aka Victorian music hall sensation, Vulcana. They talk strength, beauty, heroism, tragedy, Scotland Yard, Wales, and Rebecca's new novel Vulcana, a fictional retelling of Kate's life. Jen catches up with professional organiser Jenn Jordan to talk about the cathartic powers of decluttering, and the unexpected things one finds in a Ryvita box. And in Jenny Off The Blocks we look back at a HUGE weekend in women's sport. This Is Spinal Tap quite rightly holds a special place in Hannah's heart – and Mick's. And the team all loved Christopher Guest's debut mockumentary, 1996's Waiting For Guffman. So what will they make of his 20-year-old foray into folk, A Mighty Wind? And how do you get a potato out of a paddywagon?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Based on Paul's In the Mood for Love (2000), Corey was swept up into the world of Chinese cuisine and figured, "We need a movie with a great scene in a Chinese restaurant." And so... Waiting for Guffman (1996). Directed by Christopher Guest and co-written by Guest and Eugene Levy, Waiting for Guffman is the mockumentary that kinda started it all. With a Murderers' row of improv performances, infinitely quotable dialogue, and catchy showtunes, Guffman is a brilliant comedy that holds up nearly 30 years later. What am I telling you for? If you've ever done theatre, someone has made you watch this.

In this episode, Andy and Stephanie discuss theatre and improv as they review Christopher Guest's WAITING FOR GUFFMAN. Because Stephanie didn't.

Brown and Regina Hall, has hit theaters and Peacock, with a period in its title and a lot more than pearl Prada on its mind.Later, we'll nominate mockumentaries to the Hall of Excellence.What's GoodAlonso - Gratitude for the people in his life that let him rest and recuperate Drea - Justice for Selena Gomez's deadpan on OMITBAngelique - Fall Festival SeasonIfy - A/C scienceITIDICThat Famous Nicole Kidman AMC Ad is Getting a SequelLast Saturday was “National Cinema Day” in the USChris “Ludacris” Bridges and Lil Rel Howery Are Making a Christmas Movie for Disney+Hall of Excellence Nominees - Vote on FacebookWaiting for Guffman (1996)Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)The Other Side of the Wind (2018, technically)Staff PicksSupport the Girls (2018)A Face in the Crowd (1957)The Best Man (1999)The House (2022)Other Honk for Jesus linksEbo's short film versionAngelique's interview with the castEveryPlateGet your first box for just $1.49 per meal by going to EveryPlate.com and entering code maxfilm149. My guest this week is producer, songwriter and keyboardist CJ Vanston. CJ Vanston started doing jingles in Chicago where he soon became a first call player, doing as many as six sessions a day. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked with a wide variety of artist like Toto, Def Leppard, Prince, Joe Cocker, Tears For Fears, Spinal Tap Ringo Starr, Bob Seger BB King, Celine Dion Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton among many others. He's also worked on films like Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, Sweet Home Alabama, A Mighty Wind, Mascots and more. CJ has also written and performed pieces for the Dalai Lama and Muhammad Ali, and most recently y co-wrote, co-produced and performed on Jeff “Skunk” Baxter's 2022 solo release called Speed of Heat. During the interview we talked about how he got the nickname CJ, getting started in the studio scene, learning to engineer and mix, and much more. I spoke with CJ via zoom from his home in the Hollywood Hills. On the intro I'll take a look at the ruling that finally gives songwriters a retroactive raise, and the camera that can see vibrations and record multiple instruments separately. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83459851, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
