Hooked on Hoop! Coming up, I talk music with the amazing Jesca Hoop! California-born but now based in Manchester, UK, Jesca Hoop is what you'd call a musician's musician. Discovered by Tom Waits and brought on tour by Peter Gabriel to sing in his band, it was a phone call from Elbow's Guy Garvey that saw her move to the UK. Her recent album “Order of Romance”, produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, This is the Kit), received huge acclaim from fans and critics alike, and it's easy to see why: her beautiful songs, rooted in the folk tradition are intricately detailed, acoustic-led pieces that teem with ideas.” Hope you are looking forward to this conversation as much as me! #Conversations #MusicInterviews #MyMusic #Podcast #Elbow #JescaHoop

As such, we start off by discussing his new album and the recently released single, "Darling Boy", which features vocals from Guy Garvey and lyrics that Garvey used to sing as a lullaby to his then-newborn son. We then dig into Nitin's fascinating hybrid score for What's Love Got to Do with It?, which mixes traditional modern romantic elements, fairy tale motifs, and Indian classical music; it's a combo I've certainly never heard. In relation to the score, Nitin discusses the relatively identical nature of Indian and Pakistani classical music, the line between culture appropriation and appreciation in music, and collaborating with Naughty Boy, and legendary Qawwali singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. You can find out more about Nitin on his website. What's Love Got to Do with It? is in theaters in the UK, Nitin's score, as well as many of his other works, is available digitally on all major platforms and his new album "Identity" is forthcoming (though you can listen to the single, "Darling Boy", here).
Asking John Grant to describe the essence of the record he is working on now, elicits a response that fascinates from the get go. “I'm trying to marry the vibe of Blade Runner with - wait a minute - let me go and get this movie [shows me Tetsu The Iron Man]. I want to blend Sonic Youth with Blade Runner, Evil Dead and Halloween 3”. John was struggling to articulate a few things on the day we met, including the one word essence of this new album project, but I'm going to guess the word that he was looking for was cyberpunk. If you don't know it, Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a 1989 Japanese tokusatsu cyberpunk body horror film created (as in written, produced, edited, and directed) by Shinya Tsukamoto. It's insane and unlike any other movie made then or now. It's an auteur's project and that sums up John Grant better than anything else. The man has a singular vision and for that we can be grateful. We do not want John Grant by way of compromise! And then there is Blade Runner, which I'm guessing you are more familiar with. Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic is an anchor point for Grant, who is influenced by those sweeping, cosmic valve-synth Vangelis soundscapes that cropped up so fully formed on his last album Boy From Michigan - a high watermark record that John feels is only just finished, yet is already almost two years old. In today's music biz, two years is an awfully long time. But then, making the follow-up to Boy From Michigan is not a trivial undertaking. Creativity in John Grant's particular zone of avant garde pop is not an environment in which you can simply turn up at the office and turn on the tap. His world is not always a well-oiled machine. “Guy Garvey told me that creativity is like a pipeline that you have to keep flowing, even if it's just to flush the shit out before you can get to the good stuff”.I do love it when artists listen to artists. Thing is, it doesn't happen enough. For the time being however, if you cannot wait too long for more from John - good news. Grant's alternative supergroup Creep Show brings a welcome escape from the weight of the world - for him and for us. New album Yawning Abyss is due for release June 2023. Creep Show is a wonderful collaboration. With a name inspired by George A. Romero and Stephen King's 1982 film and novel, Creep Show brings together John Grant with the dark analogue-electro of Wrangler (Stephen Mallinder / Phil Winter and Benge, the latter producing Grant's 2018 album Love Is Magic). The Creep Show project deserves every bit the success achieved by Gorillaz, in a parallel universe in which all music is judged on listenability. Katherine Priddy's 2021 debut album, The Eternal Rocks Beneath, was a revelation to me when I discovered it a few years back. Folk music it might have been, but it wasn't so inaccessible that it was too much for those who merely enjoy their rock acoustic and restrained. I'm not alone in being a fan of the singer-songwriter from Birmingham. Praise came from Cerys Matthews, Tom Robinson, Radcliffe & Maconie, Janice Long and Guy Garvey, while the great Richard Thompson was so enthused by what he heard, he told MOJO magazine the record was the “best thing he'd heard all year” and took Katherine out on tour with him. And so I thought it might be fun to get Katherine on the blower to tell me about this record, the next record, and a lot more besides. But let me warn you, if you listen to this episode, you will never, ever feel the same way about otters again. Award-winning musician and lead singer of Elbow, Guy Garvey has toured the world, but his destination of choice is New York City. The undeniably impressive Manhattan Island certainly has the architecture, culture and people to inspire a songwriter - but can Shaun get over the lack of a decent curry or a cup of tea? Your Place Or Mine is the travel podcast that isn't going anywhere - not until guests can convince Shaun Keaveny it's worth getting off the sofa for. Each week a familiar face will try to persuade Shaun and resident geographer, historian and comedian Iszi Lawrence that jetting off to their favourite destination is worth the hassle. Across the series listeners will be able to figuratively globe-trot to a new destination, as guests share a personal guide to their favourite place on the planet. Iszi will be on hand to check out the facts during the podcast's metaphorical tour of its visitors' much-loved locations. With all the missed travel these past two years, Your Place Or Mine will explore whether getting back on a plane is too much for our wallets and limited carbon budgets, or if seeing the world and experiencing global cultures is something we can't afford to miss. Your Place or Mine is a BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. Producers: Proinsias O'Coinn and Jen Whyntie
The rock band elbow (small "e") hails from greater Manchester and makes subtle, sensitive, anthemic, joyful music, sometimes augmented with the strings of the Hallé Orchestra, (which they did not bring with them.) Guy Garvey's vocals and wordplay are perched atop a well-orchestrated but never overwrought blend of melodic bass, guitar and piano riffs, and pulsing percussion, all the while squeezing out a wide range of bottled emotions onto expansive life paintings. They've referred to themselves as "prog without the solos" (AllMusic). elbow plays music from their 2017 album, "Little Fictions" in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.)
Singer, songwriter and radio presenter Guy Garvey is the guest in this episode of Chris Difford's podcast. In this wonderfully warm conversation, the Elbow frontman recounts many stories from his career, including his early dabbling with rap, how the band was almost over before it even began, the time he met Beyonce and Jay Z (but didn't know it) and the fortuitous backstory behind the Elbow's biggest hit "One Day Like This".

If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink and waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, he scratches away at his reworking of the comic medieval poem The Owl and the Nightingale. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, music, art, sheds, sherry, owls, nightingales and to throw light on some of the poem's internal themes. The first person to drop by is Guy Garvey, lead singer of Elbow, fellow birdwatcher and 6 Music presenter. Once the door of the shed is shut the conversation goes wherever it likes - from the business of writing songs in a band to singing in the church choir, from old harmoniums to village pantomimes and from fathers to children.
Poet Laureate Simon Armitage is a former probation officer, DJ and a poet celebrated for his witty and profound take on modern life. In this podcast, he invites guests to join him in the writing shed in his garden to talk about life, language and the human voice. Over 12 episodes, guests include acclaimed spoken word performer Kate Tempest, Turner Prize recipient Antony Gormley, model and actress Lily Cole, DJ and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, actress Maxine Peake, poet Jackie Kay and World Record beatboxing champion Testament.
Elbow are one of those bands who hold a place in your heart. Maybe it's the timbre of Guy Garvey's voice or the stomping emotion they bring to their music. They've long been visitors to Australia and in 2011 made the trek to play Splendour in the Grass. When Guy Garvey and Pete Turner from the band did the Take 5 they'd just been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for the third time and had a solid history behind them already. They shared their songs of nostalgia. Japan - ‘Ghosts' Public Enemy - ‘Fight the Power' Blondie - ‘Rapture' The Mamas and the Papas - ‘Monday, Monday' Primal Scream - ‘Come Together'
