Can you name a movie just by hearing a few seconds of audio—no visuals, no context, just vibes? In this laugh-out-loud episode of The Ben and Skin Show on 97.1 The Eagle, the crew dives into a hilariously relatable late-night game Skin's wife invented on the fly: “Guess That Movie by Sound Alone.” What started as a casual scroll through the cable guide turned into a full-blown cinematic guessing challenge that had Skin shouting, “Is that The Player?!” and nailing it.Ben Rogers and Jeff “Skin” Wade wax nostalgic about the joys of old-school cable TV and the underrated thrill of channel surfing.Kevin “KT” Turner and Krystina Ray defend the modern streaming life, sparking a hilarious generational debate about guides, apps, and whether Hulu Live counts as “real TV.”Skin's uncanny ability to identify Ghostbusters II just from Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver's voices is both impressive and absurd. The team riffs on the absurdity of pay-per-view listings, including a few… very adult titles that sneak into the conversation.

On this episode we dive deep into the making The Invisible Raptor with writer and star Mike Capes and producer Nic Neary. The film is a hilarious, Amblin-inspired horror-comedy that delivers big creature-feature thrills (without ever showing the creature itself).Mike and Nic share how the movie originated as a 3 AM idea, the journey from script to screen, and how they secured funding and distribution in a competitive indie film market. They also get into guerrilla filmmaking tactics, crafting a compelling pitch package, boosting production value with amazing locations and handling on-set crises. Please enjoy this conversation with Nic Neary and Mike Capes.Show NotesMovies Mentioned:Jurassic Park (1993)Ghostbusters (1984)The Goonies (1985)Indiana Jones franchiseE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)Jaws (1975)Airplane! (1980)The Naked Gun (1988)Gremlins (1984)Super Troopers (2001)Speed (1994)Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)Ghostbusters II (1989)Terrifier (2016)It's Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaTeen WolfHere are some key takeaways from this conversation with Mike & Nic.You Have Got to Stand Out.The film industry is oversaturated with scripts, projects, and ideas—pitching something uniquely is essential. The Invisible Raptor team understood that a script alone wouldn't grab attention, so they built a compelling pitch package with costumes, action figures, a movie poster, and a humorous pitch video. These tangible assets made the project feel real to investors, giving it momentum before it was even funded. A script isn't always enough—filmmakers should create visual, physical, or digital materials to showcase their vision, commitment and enthusiasm.Write the Movie You Want—Then Find a Way to Make It HappenConventional wisdom tells indie filmmakers to write “contained, low-budget” scripts—but the Invisible Raptor team ignored that advice. They wrote a film with a dinosaur theme park, elaborate effects, and car chases, then figured out how to make it work through resourcefulness, networking, and persistence. Finding an affordable dinosaur amusement park seemed impossible—until a chance conversation with John Stamos led them to the perfect location. Discovery Cube Science Center in Anaheim, where Stamos' sister worked, had everything they needed—including a giant animatronic dinosaur that pooped, which fit the script perfectly.By piecing together multiple assets through favors the team gave the movie a much bigger scope than its budget should have allowed. Don't let financial limitations stifle your creativity—write the best version of your story, then problem-solve to bring it to life.Hire for EnergyFilmmaking is grueling, especially on an indie production where long hours and tight budgets push everyone to their limits. The Invisible Raptor team knew that keeping morale high was just as important as hitting their shots. A positive, energized set prevented burnout and kept the production moving forward, even when challenges arose. They understood that even one toxic crew member can derail everything. That's why they were selective in hiring—not just bringing on trusted friends, but choosing people who truly supported the vision. Negativity spreads faster than positivity, so keeping the right energy on set meant keeping the right people around.Follow Mike Capes at:IMBd:

Christmas has been and gone, it's roast dinner farts lingering like slush on the street as we pitch towards New Year's Eve, and our extended festive holiday in New York draws to an end with “Ghostbusters II”. A film in which Nancy Spungen predicts the end of days; Bill Murray seeks psychiatric help from his own brother; and, once more, New York is portrayed as a festering hotbed of aggression, with a toxic sludge running beneath its streets. Much like the subject of our previous episode - “Ghostbusters II” came too late to ride the seismic wave of popularity the original generated. Unlike “Gremlins 2”, however, it doesn't particularly offer anything new, with many noting the similar story beats to the first film. Oddly for a tale about negative emotions feeding supernatural events, it's also softer and less cynical in its outlook, presumably part of efforts to aim it more for the kids who had unexpectedly embraced the original. For those of us young enough, it still holds an affectionate place in our hearts as we finally got more “proper” Ghostbusters, but, as far as the studio was concerned, this failed to catch the lightning a second time, and any further talk of sequels were shelved for nearly thirty years. Whist not a patch on the original, but with interesting moments, good gags, exemplary effects and great additions to an already perfect cast, “Ghostbusters II” doesn't deserve the poor reputation it's had over the years. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

5 years after literally saving New York City and by extension the WORLD, the Ghostbusters are all but forgotten. Ray and Winston (Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson) are doing parties for privileged brats, Egon (Harold Ramis) is experimenting on human emotions and Venkman (Bill Murray) is hosting The World of the Psychic, a show Kreskin won't even do. Dana (Sigourney Weaver) who married, had a baby, and divorced is now working for the art museum under Dr. Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol) who has an unhealthy obsession with a painting of maniac, Vigo the Carpathian (William von Homburg), all while negative energy coalesces into pink slime underground that threatens a season of evil. After beating a charge and getting the crew back together, they packed up their group, got a grip, came equippe, grabbed their proton packs on their backs and they split! Try and battle our boys? Erik Jensen grew up in New Jersey. As a young person he loved monster movies. For a time he considered pursuing a career as a veterinarian. But when his friend Chris Walas moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the movie FX business, Erik wasn't too far behind. In Hollywood Erik worked on several low budget horror movies honing his skills and making connections. It was a small community and led to working with Rob Bottin on some projects, including John Carpenter's 1982 remake "The Thing". Erik worked in both production and as an artist. Erik's work landed him a job on Dragonslayer at ILM where he would work on multiple projects for more than 20 years. HIs list of credits are amazing and include; Young Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek IV, Ghostbusters II, Star Wars: Episode 1, Space Cowboys, AI, Peter Pan, Star Wars: Episode III, and Jarhead. He also left ILM to work at Skellington on The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. He later worked at TraumaFX building realistic task trainers for both human and K9 simulators for emergency medical training. Today Erik is retired and lives with his wife being an active grandparent. It was great fun talking with Erik about his life and incredible career (which is obvious as this is a long one).

“Switch me on.”When you think about it, the original Ghostbusters movie captivated a generation in a way that we usually reserve for franchises like Star Wars. Who would have thought that a big budget semi-horror comedy featuring a bunch of Saturday Night Live alums would become the kind of pop culture phenomenon that is still releasing films 40 years later, not to mention a parade of animated series, collectibles, video games, and more? And yet, that's exactly what happened! And perhaps a key part of that appeal was the central piece of equipment that the Ghostbusters outfitted themselves with: the proton pack. Essentially an “unlicensed nuclear accelerator” that they wear on their backs that allows them to “herd” ghosts into the equally fantastic traps (something that will perhaps be the focus of a future episode of Does it Fly?), the proton pack is as striking a visual as Star Wars' lightsaber or Star Trek's transporter. It's far from the only reason Ghostbusters has endured, but the millions of children of the 1980s who turned their school backpacks into ghost-fighting machines can't be wrong! At the heart of Ghostbusters is the fact that our heroes are all scientists, despite their shared interest in the paranormal. In a way, that's not too different from the dynamic of our brilliant hosts, who spend this special, spooky episode of Does it Fly? debating both the science and story logic of this beloved device. You can also watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? on our YouTube page. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! ProtonsYou can't wrap your head around a proton pack without first understanding the proton itself, which is simply a positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. Wait, did we say “simply?” No, these aren't that simple at all (note how Hakeem says in this episode that “the word particle can mean different things in different contexts”). Find out why right here.Particle AcceleratorsAccording to Hakeem, the proton pack is essentially a particle accelerator. Let the International Atomic Energy Agency explain them to you far better than we can. But the key here is the concept of the cyclotron, first developed by Ernest Lawrence, and which even existed in a surprisingly portable form (pending energy use necessity, of course).Beta DecayWe admit, this one is tough to follow on its own. Fortunately, there are visual references that help us follow along.Let's just let Hakeem explain how it all ties together: “The Ghostbusters use positrons to power their cyclotron which accelerates their protons so they can use them to capture ghosts.” (phew)The Real Inspiration for GhostbustersTamara brings up how Dan Aykroyd was inspired to pursue the Ghostbusters concept by an academic article from The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research (which is absolutely real). We are pretty sure that the actual article in question can be read right here!SUGGESTED VIEWING It's almost unthinkable that anyone who has clicked on this episode hasn't seen the original Ghostbusters, which is truly a generational, all-time great movie. There's an entire franchise worth exploring beyond it, though. Here's a quick guide to watching them all in the appropriate order.Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989)The two movies that make up the bedrock of Ghostbusters canon. The first, is, of course, self-explanatory. Its sequel was seen as something of a disappointment upon release, but in the years since it's seen a critical re-evaluation from the general public. The first movie belongs to a unique category of high-concept genre comedies of the 1980s, which even had this not spawned a series of movies, a toy line, an animated series, and countless collectibles would have made it pretty unique. Others that played with the formula established here include Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Beetlejuice (which we did an entire episode on that you can watch right here).Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)Unfairly maligned upon release for reasons we need not get into here, Paul Feig's complete reboot of the franchise  (it's set in a parallel universe from the first films) is better than you've heard. HoweverGhostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)These are essentially the belated Ghostbusters III and IV. As is the case with Ghostbusters sequels, your mileage may vary. For those of you who really want to dig deeper, though, you'd be surprised at just how cool (and even scary!) The Real Ghostbusters cartoon from the 1980s was. In particular, if you're looking for some spooky seasonal viewing, allow us to suggest the first season episode “When Halloween Was Forever” which feels like a genuine Ghostbusters movie condensed down to less than 30 minutes. WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't our first spooky rodeo, as we recently took a look at Beetlejuice to try and scientifically prove that demonic possession is a thing!Have you seen our awesome exclusive interview with the showrunner of Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft yet? We discuss the entire saga; from Ivan Reitman's classic original, the Real Ghostbusters cartoon that refined the series as entertainment for kids, the disappointing 1989 sequel, the 2016 all-female reboot that became a flashpoint for culture warriors online, and the recent legacy sequels guided by Jason Reitman, which have recast this saga as some form of modern American myth about a family legacy instead of just being high-concept comedies about New York schlubs who become entrepreneurs (aka the winning formula for success) We praise the Bobby Brown theme for Ghostbusters II, commend Dan Aykroyd for his fully-committed performance in the latest film (a stark contrast to Bill Murray's clear disinterest in his continuing involvement), and dig into how these new films meant for “the true fans” of the series continually get wrong what the actual legacy of these films is, as Columbia Pictures continues to struggle to make a real cinematic universe out of this IP, forever hoping lightning will strike twice. There's a Ghostbusters theme running through this episode of Film Stories, starting off with a dive into 1989's Ghostbusters II. Dismissed by critics on its release and not matching the commercial performance of the 1984 original, the movie had a very difficult path to the screen. Then, when it finally started moving forward, it found itself in a queue with films such as Twins and Scrooged, to which others had commitments to.We dig into that in this episode - including the crucial meeting in a Los Angeles restaurant that unlocked Ghostbusters II in the first place. Then finally, a very special guest: Ernie Hudson joins us for the second half of the episode. On the one hand, he's talking about the newly-released Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. On the other? Well, how are we supposed to resist talking to him about Congo... Hosted on Acast. Fasten your proton packs and prepared to be slimed as Cory and Nick dissect the underappreciated sequel, "Ghostbusters II." On this minisode, in anticipation(?) of Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom, we peel back the curtain on the fall from grace of our beloved specter-hunters, reflecting the actors' own real-life arcs as Cory states his case to Nick of why this sequel is superior to the 1984 original (which Nick disagrees with). With sharp insights and a few laughs, we reveal how the sequel's narrative cleverly dances with the decade's cultural heartbeat, connecting dots that only a true fan—or a keen new viewer—could spot.End your ghost-hunting expedition with a debate that has echoed through the ages: Can the sequel's soundtrack possibly outshine Ray Parker Jr.'s iconic anthem? As we weigh the cultural clout and chart-topping triumphs of both tunes, we also consider the underappreciated depths of "Ghostbusters II." We salute Bill Murray's enigmatic approach to life that bleeds into every role, from zany paranormal investigator to the reflective characters he portrays in later films. With spirits high and PKE meters off the charts, we close the trap on an episode that's as much about the phenomenon of Ghostbusters as it is a toast to Murray's indelible mark on the silver screen. Thanks for listening; If you feel like supporting us, this is where you do that!BuyMeACoffee Check out or other content/socials here.
