Children in the second plane of development (ages 6-12, but especially ages 6-9!) are navigating the rules of society, and beginning to understand their actions can create change. A huge part of this work includes the tattle tale phase, during which children seem to come to parents and teachers with a never-ending stream of complaints about the words and actions of others around them. It can be extremely hard to find the patience, empathy, and the right words to handle all of the tattling! In this episode, Megan and Laura share their opinions on the reason this phase is so important, and how they have navigated it in their careers as Lower Elementary teachers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/montessorimomsinthewild/support

Intro Aubrey Hargis, M.Ed teacher, writer and Co-founder of Child of the Redwoods with her husband David. Aubrey is a Montessori parent educator she is best known for her empathetic approach and appreciation for the beauty of childhood. As a life-long Montessori advocate, former public school teacher, and AMS certified Lower Elementary guide, her passion has always been to bring Montessori into the mainstream. She has written two child development books, Toddler Discipline for Every Age and Stage and Baby's First Year Milestones and is the lead instructor for all of Child of the Redwoods' current programs. Her Big Dream? To make Montessori affordable and accessible to parents all over the world. Aubrey and David founded Child of the Redwoods in 2017 to provide high quality, developmentally aligned online courses and curriculum to parents. Top three takeaways Most people don't know that children are basically capable of teaching themselves. Our role as teachers/homeschoolers is better thought of as guiding rather than instructing. Montessori is for every child because it is developmentally based and individualized - but it's not necessarily for every parent. How Child of the Redwoods aims to continue this work but outside of the school system. Our goal is to help parents understand their children deeply so that teaching is intuitive. I work for Prairie School of Dupage as not only the lead Forest Preschool teacher, but also I work with our Lower Elementary program for recess and am the tour guide for the school. I would love to talk about how we work with challenging behaviors in our program--particularly since we are a "classroom without walls", what tools do we have access to? Also, discovering that some of these challenge behaviors may stem from sensory overload (wet boots, wet socks, something causing discomfort) or needing some extra sensory stimulation (impulsive behavior) and working with children and parents to support them. https://prairieschoolofdupage.org/ Diona Reese Williams Edited Production: Angel Productions DRW Guest: Kelin Fulkerson-Smith Facebook Page: @dionareesewilliams Instagram DRW Personal Brand: @drw_dionareesewilliams Instagram Out Back Learning LLC: @outbacklearning2019 Facebook Page: @outbacklearning2019 Podcast: https://anchor.fm/diona-williams Children's Book: Sweet Potato & Mud Pies https://a.co/d/hRu3fvP --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/diona-williams/support

Here's episode 24 of the podcast, where we let you peek your head round our classroom doors here at History At Our House! In this class, the High School class is finished with the Greco-Persian wars, and they're now looking at just what the Athenians got up to, now this victorious, relatively prosperous power in the Mediterranean. Like the Lower Elementary class, they've been looking at one of the greatest of these occupations: Philosophy. I think you'll get an idea of the difference between the Lower Elementary and High School classes with this episode. This is is a short section of an hour long lesson (compared to the Lower Elementary half-hour lesson), and goes into more, and more abstract, detail about the significance of philosophy to the Greeks and to us. Here's episode 23 of the podcast, where we let you peek your head round our classroom doors here at History At Our House! In this class, the Lower Elementary students have started the Golden Age of Athens, a period which came in the peace following the Greek triumph over the invading Persian forces. The Lower Elementary class are introduced to one of the main industries of this time - Philosophy - and one of one of the main characters produced in that time, someone to whom we owe a great debt: Socrates. This is a man they class have actually already encountered in their History Through Art classes - in this famous piece by David - but now they get to spiral back, as we're found of doing here, approaching the same material but from a different angle, integrating different pieces of knowledge. As students progress at History At Our House they don't just hear about Socrates. In fact, upon entering the High School level, they actually get the chance to study some of Socrates' writings! Episode 13 of the podcast, where we let you peek your head round one of our classroom doors, here at History At Our House! One of the common threads we find in history is a certain kind of conflict, between the duties and the desires of the ruler. Rather than being able to do whatever they want and be universally loved for it they often find that they are enslaved to what their people want. This our Lower Elementary class grapples with, as they look at an ancient king who wanted to follow his own religion, one different to that of his people.
Episode 8 of our sneak peek inside the History At Our House classroom! This week, we're peeking our heads around the door of the Lower Elementary class, where they're learning that dark ages aren't just for first millenium Europe - any peoples struck by a disruptive force can see their empire torn apart. These particular Mesopotamians learned that the hard way...
