Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture". Wright was the pioneer of what came to be called the Prairie School movement of architecture and also developed the concept of the Usonian home in Broadacre City, his vision for urban planning in the United States. He also designed original and innovative offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, museums, and other commercial projects. Wright-designed interior elements (including leaded glass windows, floors, furniture and even tableware) were integrated into these structures. He wrote several books and numerous articles and was a popular lecturer in the United States and in Europe. Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time". In 2019, a selection of his work became a listed World Heritage Site as The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Raised in rural Wisconsin, Wright studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin and then apprenticed in Chicago, briefly with Joseph Lyman Silsbee, and then with Louis Sullivan at Adler & Sullivan. Wright opened his own successful Chicago practice in 1893 and established a studio in his Oak Park, Illinois home in 1898. His fame increased and his personal life sometimes made headlines: leaving his first wife Catherine Tobin for Mamah Cheney in 1909; the murder of Mamah and her children and others at his Taliesin estate by a staff member in 1914; his tempestuous marriage with second wife Miriam Noel (m. 1923–1927); and his courtship and marriage with Olgivanna Lazović (m. 1928–1959). As revealed in our initial interview, Jim Zielinski, Co-Director of College Counseling at The Prairie School in Racine, Wisconsin, is a professional role model for Teege - and as such, the conversation went on far too long during our recording in August. With decades of experience as a Director of Admission and now many years on the school counseling side of the desk, Jim had a lot to say about how to think differently about middle-class families going through the college search process. Often represented as a "donut hole" in terms of college financing options, this is an area that we can all benefit from ongoing thought. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adlunchcast/message

Guiding middle-income families through the financial aid process is particularly vexing. That's not to imply it's easier with low- and lower-income families, but in that case there are more programs and places to point them to. Middle-income families often exist in the "donut hole" of financial aid - making too much to qualify for state or federal grants, but not enough to afford the cost of their child's education. What can we do to help this group? We are joined by two experts, each uniquely positioned to provide insight. Jim Zielinski, Co-Director of College Counseling at The Prairie School in Racine, Wisconsin brings his experience as a school counselor and his decades of experience as Director of Admissions at a liberal arts college to the discussion. How he advises families through the process and when he poses the question of, 'whose responsibility is it to pay for your child's education?' are two particularly highlights. Ryan Gebler, Director of Financial Aid at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin adds his own level of insight. Having worked at multiple private institutions and counseled hundreds if not thousands of students through financial aid systems, he offers a level of information that we all need right now. Filling the donut hole is not easy, but it's a discussion we should collectively continue. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adlunchcast/message

This week,  Stauney brings us up to speed on Marion Mahony Griffin, one of the first female licensed architects in the whole world, and a major pioneer of the prairie school architectural style. She also carried a lifelong grudge against the famous Frank Lloyd Wright after working with him closely for over 15 years. Not only did he steal some of her drawings without attributing her, but he also disparaged the work of her and her later husband and business partner, and continued to take sole credit for the prairie style despite its many contributors. We discuss her childhood, work with the aforementioned Wright, and her later partnership, marriage and fame with her husband Walter Burley Griffin as they designed the capital and many neighborhoods in Australia.Episodes to check out after this one: Beatrice Ward, Hilma Af Klint Want to check out some of our favorite books? In this county is the Merton S. Goodnow House. It is a 1913 Prairie School house designed by Purcell & Elmslie, an example of the architectural firm's work, which was typified in its early years by modest residences for small lots. To celebrate this county, we suggest you read a book about living in a house. We give you links to each of these books on our show notes page, taking you to Amazon.com. Are you as tired as we are of the phrases, "in these uncertain times" "now more than ever" and "the new normal"??? Blah, Blah, Blah!!! We decided to take back our retirement the best way we could for now with a " micro adventure." What exactly is a "micro adventure" and "how can I sign up" you might ask? It's easy, just draw a circle on a map that encompasses about a 100 mile radius around your home and look for somewhere or something new to discover! This type of adventure can last a day, a weekend, or even a few days during the week with no other crowds (big advantage of retirement), and all you do is get into your car and go! You will be amazed what is close by that you haven't toured or discovered before! We love Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and we were amazed to learn that a small city less than 100 miles from our lake was home to two Frank Lloyd Wright properties built in his "Prairie School" period. The city of Mason City, Iowa, itself is known in the mid-west for some of the most beautiful and unique architecture in the homes that line the streets around the Historical Park Inn.Mason City is also the birthplace of Meredith Wilson, creator of "Music Man." The streets downtown are home to many sculptures honoring this legend. You can also tour his birthplace home and the museum next to it. Mason City is truly a gem of a city hidden among the corn fields! To top if off, just down the road about six miles you can visit and tour two of Iowa's and our country's musical giants in Clear Lake, Iowa...the crash site and memorial for the "Day the Music Died" and the Surf Ballroom where Buddy Holly, JP Richardson "The Big Bopper", and Ritchie Valens played their last concert in 1959.So come along and join us and then go plan your own "micro adventure!" We would love to hear about it!!!

In 1914 the Griffins, minted from the firmament of the Prairie School, were newly arrived in Australia and ready to test their ideas in that rarest of all architectural laboratories, a grand urban design scheme for a new and entirely planned city. But their lofty ideals were to dissipate rapidly: their design for Canberra, which won the 1911 international competition, would meet vicious opposition and never be fully realised. Instead they conjured up Newman College and the Capitol Theatre, estates at Castlecrag and Eaglemont, the towns of Leeton and Griffith, and a construction system known as Knitlock, eventually following their aesthetic and spiritual sensibilities to Lucknow, India. Listen to Sir Jonathan Mills and Philip Goad for this conversation, one that promised to cover the legacy of the Griffins, a name etched in our capital and national consciousness.

What We Can Learn from Teens with Bonnie Benes - Aired 9-12-15

We talk often on the Mind Body Spirit Living show about how we can get to know ourselves better.  This week we begin a series of shows that explore how we can learn more about ourselves…….from others.  We start by speaking with someone who does what many people would find to be nearly impossible, but that she learns and grows from it every day. As the Head of the Middle School at The Prairie School, Bonnie Benes does what many people would find incredibly challenging, spending her days with teenagers in grades 5-8.  Each day she negotiates teen hormones, angst and drama, and all the while finds herself energized and even learning about herself in a way that no other job could.  Join us to hear Bonnie’s thoughts on what we can learn about ourselves….from teenagers. Bonnie Benes was born in the small town of Berlin, Wisconsin and was raised by parents who were educators.  She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received her B.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in athletic training.  After a relocation to Racine, WI, she landed at The Prairie School.  Five years later, she returned to school to receive her M.S. in Educational Administrative Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1998, she became Head of the Middle School at Prairie. While fully immersed in her teaching career, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in 1993.  She completed  her treatment regimen while continuing to work full time.  In the Spring of 2000, her breast cancer returned and Bonnie balanced her treatment schedule and work schedule to insure a smooth continuation of the school year, and returned full time to school for the beginning of the school year in the Fall of 2000. Bonnie is an avid Wisconsin Badger fan and a mentor and inspiration to generations of parents and students. For more about The Prairie School, go to www.prairieschool.com.
