Colonies are managed for bee health with active selection for vigor, genetic diversity and disease resistance, but without chemical treatments for over a decade. In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Jeff Johnson, co-founder of Premier Bee Products, for a fascinating discussion on the innovations shaping modern beekeeping. Jeff Johnson shares how a quest for better foundation led to the creation of Puracell, a plastic foundation that mimics natural honeycomb with precise cell sizes and thinner cell walls, designed to promote healthier colonies. Listeners will hear about the years of research and meticulous measurements that went into developing this foundation, giving bees the most natural environment possible within the hive. The episode also dives into Premier Bee's latest development: the Propola Hive. Designed to mimic the rough, natural surfaces inside a tree, the Propola Hive encourages bees to build a propolis envelope around their living space. Jeff explains how propolis acts as a natural immune system for bees, helping colonies fight off pathogens. Inspired by the groundbreaking research of Dr. Marla Spivak, this hive design is already seeing enthusiastic adoption among both commercial and hobbyist beekeepers. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in how science and passion come together to support bee health. Jeff Johnson's dedication to improving beekeeping equipment with a beekeeper-first approach is inspiring and offers listeners valuable insights into the benefits of propolis and hive innovation. Insects — or the lack thereof — are the focus of this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. On Friday, host Kerri Miller will talk with environmental journalist Oliver Milman about how the silent collapse in global insect populations is disrupting many of our most important ecosystems. Here in Minnesota, bees are the insects whose absence is most keenly felt. Back in 2013, University of Minnesota entomologist Marla Spivak talked with Miller about what she was seeing. But she also gave advice about how to help the bees: Plant flowers. “We really have a flowerless landscape out there, and bees need flowers for good nutrition,” Spivak said. “If bees have good nutrition, and a lot of pollen and protein coming in and nectar coming in, they're better able to fight off these diseases. And it helps them detoxify some of the pesticides. We really need bee-friendly flowers out there, everywhere.” Guest: Marla Spivak is an entomologist and Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota specializing in apiculture and social insects. She is the author of “Attracting Native Pollinators” published in 2011. To listen to the full conversation you can use the audio player above. Imagine a completely automated beekeeping operation. Well, BeeWise has created the Bee Home, housing 24 colonies that is a solar powered, insulated, and completely automated for every beekeeping management task. Saar Safar, our guest today, was approached by a beekeeper that had a rough idea of what he wanted, and Saar put his own skills at mechanical and digital automation to work and BeeWise came to be. The Bee Home is totally self-contained and requires almost no beekeeper assistance. There are 24 colonies in each unit, 12 colonies on each side of the bee home that open to the outside. Inside the bee home box there is a space between the two sides that a robot occupies. It can move from front to back, and it can inspect each of the hives from inside. It removes a frame, examines its condition relative to brood, disease, food and more, and sends the data to the cloud where a beekeeper can make appropriate management decisions. Annual losses in the Beewise bee homes are less than 10%, which is a real plus. Labor costs to manage and supply food for the robot to feed colonies, or remove the extracted honey are minute when compared to traveling to remote beeyards, having to examine each hive and then managing it for survival. The costs are evolving, but at this time there is no initial upfront purchase cost. Then $400/month for each unit containing 24 colonies. That's $200/year for each colony with essentially no labor costs and less than 10% annual loss. Almond pollination will pay the rent, and the honey made is only a plus, along with the many extra bees available to split and sell. They've been at this for several years, improving and adding features and testing these units, and thousands of colonies have been managed in them, and it seems they have it down. In today's episode, we talk with Bridget Mendel and Becky Masterman of the University of Minnesota Bee Lab's “Bee Squad”.  Dr. Marla Spivak created Bee Squad as an outreach group 10 years ago in the Twin Cities area to help local beekeepers and other people just wanting bees in the backyard, with just a couple of volunteers. It has blossomed into a dynamic, nationally known UMN Extension Program that is helping hundreds, even thousands of people – beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike. The Bee Squad was originally headed by Becky who recently 'passed the hive tool' of leadership to Bridget. Together, they have paired up with a host of other programs including the BIP Sentinel Program, the American Honey Producers Association and their habitat program, the University of Michigan's Veteran's programs, and thousands of beekeepers across the US. The Bee Squad's list of programs is extensive – and they are not just for Minnesotan's. Funded by sales from their store, payment for managing other's bees, grants and donations and community partners, they have nearly a dozen talented people managing all of these programs. The Importance of Propolis and More with Dr. Marla Spivak (S3, E33)

Marla Spivak is a honey bee researcher at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her work has covered a variety of subjects over the years including queen breeding and disease prevention and lately she has been working on the relationship of honey bees and propolis. Propolis is simply a mixture of resins honey bees collect from a variety of plants. These resins protect these plants from diseases and pests that would otherwise harm them. She first became interested when she read that some properties of propolis had a positive effect on human HIV disease. Then she attended a meeting where she learned how ants collect these resins to use in their nests and she was hooked or should we say, propolis stuck with her… to her… to, everything. Propolis has a definite antimicrobial effect on dangerous microbes in the hive and at the same time, manages to help maintain, even increase the positive microbiome in a honey bee's gut and even their mouth parts. It doesn't cure AFB or EFB, but is does help keep it in check in an infected colony. Propolis in a beehive moves the needle, researchers feel. It is the foundation for honey bee health. Dr. Kirsten Traynor joins Beekeeping Today Podcast in this episode to talk about her new quarterly publication, 2 Million Blossoms. 2 Million Blossoms is dedicated to "protecting our pollinators - both wild and managed, before they disappear." 2 Million Blossoms (first issue in January 2020) will offer short and long form articles exploring how bees, birds, butterflies and bats enhance the world they all pollinate! The inaugural issue includes articles by Dr. Marla Spivak, Craig Childs, Dr. Dave Goulson, and Dr. Mark Winston. The publication is designed to look great on any coffee table, with beautiful photographs and illustrations. It is also offered in a digital format. Why the title? It takes honey bees to visit 2 million blossoms to create 1 pound of honey!
