More and more Minnesotans are leveling up their lawn care with an electric mower. But do they live up to the hype and can they tackle the tough stuff? The good news is that for most residential uses, and increasingly more and more commercial uses, electric mowers are actually a superior and more economical choice than gas mowers. Battery technology has advanced dramatically in the past decade and due to this, we're seeing more powerful electric cars and more capable electric lawnmowers.Join us for a webinar we recently recorded with Jukka Kukkonen and guests from Fresh Energy and the Minnesota clean Cities Coalition.View the video version of the webinar here: https://fresh-energy.org/event/webinar-your-guide-to-mowing-electricFresh Energy's mission is to shape and drive bold policy solutions to achieve equitable carbon-neutral economies. Millions of grant dollars towards Minnesota rebate programs, solar projects for schools, and nonprofit initiatives remain frozen, delayed, or rescinded. As the path ahead is unclear for Minnesota's renewable energy efforts, how do communities and governments navigate the ever-changing landscape of federal funding? In collaboration with Fresh Energy, we met with government and community leaders at the forefront of these federal changes. We developed this podcast, incorporating our interviews and research-based commentary, aiming to create an informative experience for all prospective listeners. Our podcast maps the current funding landscape, acknowledges concerns, and identifies the advocacy that persists in the face of uncertainty.View references and the original show details here: https://soundcloud.com/impact-of-uncertainty/the-impact-of-uncertaintyFresh Energy's mission is to shape and drive bold policy solutions to achieve equitable carbon-neutral economies. To slow a warming climate, Minnesota is changing where it gets electricity — shrinking the state's reliance on fossil fuels and expanding the use of renewable energy. Today, more than half of Minnesota's electricity comes from solar, wind and hydropower. But challenges remain. For the state to reach its ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2050, Minnesotans would need to embrace new ways of heating homes, traveling, powering the state's factories and much more. And now there are questions about how President Donald Trump's tariffs and opposition to wind and solar energy might affect an energy transition. MPR News has been exploring a transition to a carbon-free economy in the series Getting to Green. MPR News correspondents Dan Kraker and Kirsti Marohn talk about the progress toward green energy and what the future holds. Guests: Allen Gleckner is the executive lead for policy and programs at Fresh Energy, a St. Paul-based clean energy nonprofit that develops decarbonization strategies to advance the clean energy economy. He focuses on technical innovation and policies that will lead to clean energy in the electric system.  Gabriel Chan is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs where he focuses on science, technology and environmental policy. He co-directs the Center for Science Technology, and Environmental Policy and the Electric Cooperative Innovation Center.

Young Guns of Warbirds: Job Savage and Friends Bring Fresh Energy to Vintage AviationWARBIRD RADIO - If you've spent any time around the warbird community, you know it's built on passion—passion for history, for flight, and for keeping these incredible machines in the air. But keeping that passion alive for the next generation? That's a challenge. Fortunately, a new wave of young aviators and restorers are stepping up, bringing fresh energy to the movement, and leading the charge is none other than Job Savage. On this episode of Warbird Radio, we sit down with Job and his flying buddy Luke Hedin, two young pilots who are making waves in the vintage military aircraft world. Their enthusiasm is undeniable, and their commitment to honoring history through hands-on flying and restoration work is nothing short of inspiring. From stick-and-rudder flying to wrench-turning in the hangar, these guys are all in.Later in the episode, we catch up with Job's father, serial entrepreneur and aviation publisher Tim Savage. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and Tim's lifelong dedication to aviation has clearly influenced Job's passion. But what's most impressive isn't just their personal involvement—it's their generosity in opening doors for others. The Savage's and their friends understand that for this movement to thrive, it has to grow. That means creating opportunities for young pilots, maintenance professionals, and restoration experts to get involved, learn the ropes, and carry the torch forward.Their love of all things warbirds is infectious, and hopefully, their generosity is contagious. Our community needs more young hands on the controls and under the cowling, and seeing what the Savage's are doing is proof that the next generation is ready to take flight.Adding to their efforts, the Savage's are now offering DC-3 flight training and type ratings, further expanding opportunities for aspiring aviators. Aviation accounts for nearly 10% of greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector in the United States. With emissions from aircrafts on the rise, federal and state governments are urgently seeking ways to reduce aviation industry emissions through low-carbon fuel pathways that can benefit communities, mitigate climate impacts, and drive business development. But what is sustainable aviation fuel and the possibilities (and perils) it can present?Minnesota is at an inflection point. The choices made now about our state's approach to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will have an impact for decades to come.Fresh Energy, The Nature Conservancy, and Friends of the Mississippi River partnered to present a webinar for anyone interested in learning more about the possibilities and perils of SAF, especially those working within state agencies, agriculture, economic development, advocacy, and academia.During the discussion, we unpacked what SAF is and how it fits into decarbonizing emissions from aviation, discussed the Minnesota Sustainable Aviation Fuels Guiding Principles created by partner organizations Fresh Energy, Friends of the Mississippi River, and The Nature Conservancy, and explained what could be next for SAF in Minnesota and beyond.View the video recording of the presentation at minnesotasaf.com.Fresh Energy's mission is to shape and drive bold policy solutions to achieve equitable carbon-neutral economies. Minnesota is going green, and fast. Officials have set an ambitious goal — for the state to be carbon neutral by 2050.   The state is making progress. Over half of Minnesota's electricity is now produced by sources that don't emit greenhouse gases.Last year, state lawmakers set aside tens of millions of dollars for a host of climate projects, from putting solar panels on schools to rebates for electric vehicles. And, the federal government recently pledged billions of dollars to spark the clean energy transition. But there are still many challenges Minnesota must overcome to “get to green.” We need more electric transmission capacity, more electric vehicle chargers and more cost-effective ways to decarbonize buildings, farms and factories.   Listen to a recording of the first of three live shows on the energy transition guest hosted by MPR News correspondents Kirsti Marohn and Dan Kraker, expanding on the reporting they've done with MPR News colleagues in our series Getting to Green. Hydrogen is a hot topic in the clean energy space and here in Minnesota. Thanks to the 100% clean electricity law, Minnesota's electricity supply will be 100% carbon-free by 2040. This is a BIG deal. But to address the global climate crisis, we must be carbon neutral across the economy by mid-century or before—and this includes our industry and agriculture sectors. Fortunately, federal action from the Biden Administration in the past few years, including the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act and Inflation Reduction Act, are also opening up new funding and opportunities for Minnesota to leverage when we're talking industry-wide decarbonization. Join Fresh Energy's Craig McDonnell and Jo Olson to get the scoop on hydrogen and its role in industrial decarbonization.Listeners can stay up to date on Fresh Energy's work via our once-monthly email list, blog at www.fresh-energy.org, or by following us on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter.
