Climate change is demanding an extraordinarily rapid transformation of human society, and we don't have a manual. The people who have done the least to cause the problem are the people who will be feeling it most, and that pattern of inequality exists both within and between nations. Mapping a course to an adapted planet is an incredibly complex task that requires the cooperation of millions. Atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe is one of those pitching in, and she has co-authored the past four U.S. National Climate Assessment reports. She's also the chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy and a professor in the Texas Tech University Political Science department. Her multiple insider roles give her a unique perspective on what it will take to solve and adapt to the climate crisis, and her practice of finding hope keeps her engaged. NBC “Today” show weather and feature anchor Al Roker interviews Hayhoe at the 2024 Aspen Ideas: Climate event in Miami Beach, Florida. aspenideas.org

Atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe realised she was the only climate researcher in West Texas when she joined Texas Tech University in Lubbock, 15 years ago.Within a few months she was being asked to address community groups about climate change, but also a growing number of posts from social media trolls who disagreed with her, many of them misogynistic in tone. The situation has worsened since October 2022, she says. This follows amendments to Twitter's free speech policies after the platform changed ownership.“It used to be that I would receive that hate via letters or emails, or phone calls, or official complaints to my university. And those certainly still arrive. But now the deluge of hundreds of hateful comments in a single day that the internet facilitates, whether it is on Twitter, or LinkedIn, or Facebook, or even Instagram, the volume is just 100 times more than it would be without the Internet.”Hayhoe and Chris Jackson, a geoscientist who was extensively trolled after becoming the first Black researcher to deliver a Royal Institution Christmas lecture, describe how employers can protect scientists facing both online and in-person harassment, alongside they personal strategies they have adopted to protect themselves. In the fifth episode of this seven-part podcast series about freedom and safety in science, they are joined by Alfredo Carpineti, a science journalist who chairs Pride in STEM, a UK charity that supports LGBTQIA+ scientists and engineers, and Lauren Kurtz, executive director of the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit to help environmental scientists in the United States who find themselves under fire. The first six episodes in this series conclude with a follow-up sponsored slot from the International Science Council about how it is exploring freedom, responsibility and safety in science. Whether you are interested in learning more about the facts, data, or projections regarding climate change, or if you are seeking guidance on how best to approach challenging conversations about climate, I highly recommend "Saving Us." It's an optimistic, solutions-oriented guidebook for finding common ground and having productive conversations. - Katharine was born and raised in Canada and has been obsessed with science, the natural world, and the universe for as long as she can remember. Her undergraduate studies focused on physics and astronomy, but as she was finishing up her degree, she happened to take a climate science course, which captured her imagination and changed the focus of her education and career. Today, Katharine is a distinguished professor at Texas Tech, a highly respected researcher, and a sought-after speaker with a TED Talk that's been viewed more than 4 million times. And to top it all off, in 2021, she joined The Nature Conservancy as its Chief Scientist. - Katharine and I met up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where she was the keynote speaker at a community event focused on climate and climate change in the Yampa Valley and beyond. Katharine and I chatted for an hour before her event, and we managed to cover a lot of ground. We discussed her book "Saving Us," her TED talk, and a concept known as "The Six Americas of Global Warming." We discuss how and why her Christian faith plays such an important role in her work to solve climate change, and she offers some common-sense, optimistic approaches to having challenging conversations with smart people who do not think that climate change is a threat. She also talks about her role at The Nature Conservancy, specific climate opportunities and challenges facing the American West, and she offers a ton of excellent book recommendations. - Thank you to Dr. Hayhoe for taking the time out of her busy schedule to chat with me, and thank you for listening. Beyond the Visual, a symposium reflecting on what blindness brings to the experience of art within cultural organisations and beyond was held at Wellcome Collection on Friday and Saturday 21 and 22 October 2022.   Visually impaired and sighted Speakers at the symposium included artists, creative practitioners, disability activists, historians, researchers and scientists together to not only to talk about inclusion and access to the arts for blind and partially sighted people but also to talk about what blind and partially sighted people can bring to cultural experiences for all. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was there for both days of the symposium catching up with some of the key people behind Beyond the Visual and some of the key speakers too. In the second of Toby's interviews from the symposium he chats with Simon Hayhoe about his opening keynote speech, Experiencing Visual Art Having Never Experienced Vision. Katharine Hayhoe is a climate scientist, an evangelical Christian and a Texan. Those three parts of her identity do not always play well together. That's why she is determined to find effective ways to communicate with people who do not agree with her.Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist who studies climate change. She is a distinguished professor at Texas Tech University and chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy. Her latest book is “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World.” She writes regularly for the Washington Post and other publications. Her TED talk, “The Most Important Thing You Can Do About Climate Change: Talk About It,” has received more than 4 million views. Originally from Canada, she is visiting Vermont this month to deliver the keynote address for the 50th anniversary of Vermont Public Interest Research Group.Hayhoe insists that only about 8% of people completely deny the reality of climate change. She calls them “dismissives” — and she does not waste time trying to change their minds. “A key hallmark of someone who's dismissive is they literally will not and cannot listen,” she said. “I don't think it's possible barring a miracle to have a positive, constructive conversation with somebody who won't listen.“With everybody else, there is a secret to a positive conversation. And that secret is to begin with something you agree on, rather than something you disagree on.”Hayhoe suggests shifting the conversation to asking what people are worried about. “That's often where we can find sometimes surprising amounts of agreement, or at least empathy. … What would a solution look like that would actually address that without requiring the misinformation or the denial?” she asked. What most worries a climate scientist today? “It's the way that climate change is loading the weather dice against us,” she replied. “As the world gets warmer, it's like wherever we live, we have a pair of dice and we always have a chance of naturally rolling doubles.” Now, she said, “we're rolling double sixes” all the time.“The headlines around the world this summer have just been off the charts,” Hayhoe said. “Record-breaking heat waves and droughts in Europe and the U.K. followed by record breaking heavy rainfall and floods, record-breaking drought in China, record-breaking floods in Pakistan with over 30 million people affected, the wildfires, and record-breaking heat waves that we're seeing all across the western United States. There's been five 1000-year flood events in the U.S. in five weeks, and we're still getting more of them.”“Why do they matter?” Hayhoe asked. Because extreme climate events “affect us, they affect our homes, our infrastructure, our transportation, our crops, our water supply, the city of Jackson (Mississippi) not having water to support its population. Things that we took for granted — that you turn on the tap and water would come out — you can't take those things for granted anymore. And the costs in terms of human suffering, the cost in terms of the economic impacts, the long-term costs, in terms of the supply chain disruptions and the need to rebuild all of our infrastructure and the burden on our insurance, and just the personal burden of having two people having to rebuild their homes that they've lost to wildfire, flood or even sell their land that because of drought they can't grow their crops anymore. That is very concerning because it is leading to suffering today. And we know that if we don't tackle this problem at scale, it is only getting worse.”

Abstract: Walking through an environment generates retinal motion, which humans rely on to perform a variety of visual tasks. Retinal motion patterns are determined by an interconnected set of factors, including gaze location, gaze stabilization, the structure of the environment, and the walker's goals. The characteristics of these motion signals have important consequences for neural organization and behavior. However, to date, there are no empirical in situ measurements of how combined eye and body movements interact with real 3D environments to shape the statistics of retinal motion signals. Here, we collect measurements of the eyes, the body, and the 3D environment during locomotion. We describe properties of the resulting retinal motion patterns. We explain how these patterns are shaped by gaze location in the world, as well as by behavior, and how they may provide a template for the way motion sensitivity and receptive field properties vary across the visual field. While other books in this space offer doomsday scenarios, Hayhoe ‘s approach is optimistic and inclusive. She argues that climate action isn't about being a certain type of person or voting a certain way. It's about connecting with our communities based on the values we already have, to inspire collective action. Dr. Hayhoe is a leading voice in the ongoing climate change science and her new book “Saving Us” talks about both the science of climate change the politicalization of it. Her book attempts to bridge the gap between those who are skeptical of climate change and those who are leading the charge on the importance of changing societal norms to help save the planet. We talk about the data showing why climate change is being caused by humans, the skepticism around it and how we move forward. Follow Dr. Hayhoe on Twitter // @khayhoeFollow Tim on Instagram // @thenewevangelicals Help Fund Finding Our VoicesBuy Saving Us Check out the new merchJoin Our Facebook Community Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

"Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it is a threat multiplier. It takes everything we care about including the most devastating humanitarian crises, and makes them worse. It's like a hole in the bucket." —Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, atmospheric scientist According to Katharine Hayhoe, we're stuck in a system that must change. As a scientist, professor, director of the Climate Center, founder and CEO of ATMOS Research, and a principal investigator for the Department of Interior, Katharine's work has resulted in over 125 peer-reviewed papers, abstracts and other publications. She has led climate impact assessments for numerous American cities, the findings for which have been presented before Congress and used across the country. But here's what Dr. Hayhoe really wants you to know: you don't have to be a certain kind of person to care about, or act on, climate change. All you have to do is to care about it, as a person living on planet Earth. Dr. Hayhoe's TED Talk: “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: Talk about it.” (November, 2018) “The Bible doesn't talk about climate change, right?” video from Global Weirding with Katharine Hayhoe "On Being a Good Neighbor", sermon draft by the Rev. Dr. Hayhoe is the principal author of the Nation's Fourth Climate Assessment.  She stood her ground against the anti-science forces of the past Trump Administration. She was named one of Time Magazine's 100 "Most Influential People."   She is an expert on science and climate change communication.  Much of how she thinks about climate change is based in her Christian faith.  Her care and concern for the planet is not only science based, but informed by scripture: to care for God's creation as a steward and to car for "the least of them," who will suffer more from climate change than wealthier people and places.  We hope you find Dr. Hayhoe as illuminating as we did hosting her.

How do you talk to someone who doesn't believe in climate change? Not by rehashing the same data and facts we've been discussing for years, says climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. In this inspiring, pragmatic talk, Hayhoe shows how the key to having a real discussion is to connect over shared values like family, community and religion -- and to prompt people to realize that they already care about a changing climate. "We can't give in to despair," she says. "We have to go out and look for the hope we need to inspire us to act -- and that hope begins with a conversation, today." Hosted on Acast. Debate starts at 08:37. Filmmaker Tremain Hayhoe (https://youtu.be/tLvbqLZJRT4) joins the debate this week: Should you delete Facebook? Arguments for: it's crap, objectively depressing, bullshit image-crafting. Arguments against: it's the only way to connect with most people you care about, especially if you've moved away from home. Thankfully I only care about myself, so I'm set. I also talked about the time I hit on a clown, got into a heated debate about cottage cheese, "fiesta" scrambles and I talk mad shit about miners from the 1800s. Junior Journalist Taylor Nikolai (https://www.instagram.com/taylornikolai/) brings the news, plus makes the mistake of suggesting I don't know what an algorithm is. Please, I invented algorithms. Should sexual predators be eligible for awards? Debate starts at 22:54. Director, writer and producer, Tremain Hayhoe (https://twitter.com/TremainHayhoe) joins us this week. He's responsible for casting both me and Rucka in a movie together! Can the silver screen handle so much sex-appeal? Being that the same amount of sex-appeal was seen in my first movie, Ooga Booga, the answer is yes. Speaking of sex-appeal, know who has none? Harvey Weinstein. We debate whether or not pieces of shit like him should be eligible for awards.
