Laura Helgeson, founder of Let's Talk UTI, joins me to shed light on a topic that affects millions of women yet remains widely misunderstood. We're talking all things urinary tract infections—what they are, why they're often misdiagnosed, and how to get the care you deserve.Laura shares her personal journey with chronic UTIs and how it led her to create the first U.S.-based patient advocacy group focused on this issue. We dive into the gaps in traditional care, the emotional toll of feeling dismissed, and how women can better advocate for themselves at the doctor's office. If you've ever struggled with recurrent UTIs—or want to better understand and support someone who has—this conversation is packed with practical insights, validation, and hope.Laura is the founder of Let's Talk UTI, the only US-based, patient advocacy organization shining a light on the issues associated with UTI, while providing valuable insights, supporting research, and furthering education to drive meaningful change. Her life-long experience of having UTIs led to the creation of Let's Talk UTI in 2023. Let's Talk UTI and three of the world's patient-centered organizations (Live UTI Free, Chronic UTI Australia and Chronic UTI Campaign) have formed the Alliance for Patient-centered UTI Research (APUR). Together, we are advancing the understanding and management of UTI through patient-centered research and advocacy.Since the founding of Let's Talk UTI, Laura has presented at a CAIRIBU Connections meeting presenting “UTI Through the Lifespan - a Patient Perspective.” She also spoke at the NIDDK sponsored KUH Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She spoke at UW Madison in June 2024 for the Summer Program for Undergraduate Urology Research and, on behalf of APUR, at the UTI Global Alliance meeting in Columbus, OH in July 2024. In this episode, Lisa and Cindy discuss:Summer programs as a college & career exploration toolEnhancing college applications through summer experiencesThe rise of STEM programs & growing competitionChoosing the right summer program & avoiding misleading claimsKey Takeaways: Deadlines for selective summer programs are often in January or early February, with some as early as November and a few extending into April. Families should plan ahead to secure a spot. Most summer programs on prestigious college campuses do not improve admission chances, and many are run by third-party companies rather than the universities themselves.Students should document their experiences in real-time, either through journaling or voice memos, to capture meaningful reflections that can later strengthen college essays.A handful of colleges indirectly favor applicants who attend their summer programs, but this is rarely advertised publicly. Independent educational consultants (IECs) may have insider knowledge of which programs provide an admissions edge.“If you took the summer off, didn't explore that interest, applied to that major at a college specializing in it—then found out you didn't like it… now you're a year or two in, money spent, and thinking—wait, I want to change my mind. For me, the biggest value is confirming interests or ruling them out.” – Cindy McCormickAbout Cindy McCormick: Cindy McCormick is a dedicated college advisor who helps high school students find their best-fit universities. With degrees from UCLA and certifications from UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego, she brings extensive expertise. Before founding CMCA, she taught in New York and California and later specialized in college applications and essay writing. This blogcast explores “Reflections from One Week in Rome” written and read by Sarah Harrigan. In this blog post, Sarah reflects on her travel experiences while in Rome for a leadership program where she encountered members of the Church from around the world. Each day, we began with morning prayer, and we were encouraged to volunteer to share a prayer exercise with the group. One of my favorites was learning and participating in the Taize prayer. I have always enjoyed prayer through music, but I had never experienced this meditation technique. It was very calming and helped me to put my focus on the Lord. We ended each day with evening prayer followed by dinner, which we ate together as a group. Sharing meals together as a group and telling stories from our own experiences and backgrounds really helped to strengthen our bond as a group. Every meal was filled with inquisitive insight, laughter, and joy (as well as delicious home cooked Italian food!). I had never lived in a community before; I had lived in a dorm for several years in college, but I had never experienced community life like this. It was such a great experience! Everyone was so welcoming, warm, friendly, and always went out of their way to help one another. Whether it was helping me carry my suitcase to the fourth floor, filling up my glass at dinner, or lending me a bus ticket, I was struck by the selflessness of others. In reflection, I experienced so much growth during this one week abroad. I grew in my confidence of solo travel, I grew in my professional life by learning various leadership skills, I grew in my personal life from meeting so many people of different cultural backgrounds, and I grew in my spiritual life through our studies of the saints. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to attend the Summer Leadership Development Program and will continue to grow from the experience for years to come. Author:Sarah Harrigan is the Manager of Communications and Special Programs for the Catholic Apostolate Center where she coordinates the promotions and logistics of various groups and visitors coming to our Green Hill facility.  She also assists with the day-to-day operations of Green Hill and other administrative duties and is responsible for the creation and publication of our Center newsletter.  Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify Fr.
