Anyone who went to school in the 80s and 90s recognizes the sparkly unicorns, day-glo dolphins and bejeweled kittens that adorned folders and pencil cases. Those memorable designs came from Lisa Frank, Inc., a brand that defined girlhood for a generation of Americans only to seemingly disappear overnight. Now, a new docuseries on Prime Video, Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, goes behind the neon-hued world of Lisa Frank to reveal a much darker reality. The four-part docuseries uncovers a stranger-than-fiction tale that takes viewers into a hidden world lurking at the heart of the company that wasn't all puppies and rainbows. Glitter & Greed features interviews with Lisa Frank, Inc. insiders and journalists who describe a toxic work environment and corporate greed that ultimately destroyed the once-thriving business. Short of “Blackout”, Circus was the song/ album that launched her “comeback”. We delve deep into what it was like working with Britney during that time in her life, what Claude and Chuck think of the “Free Britney” movement and thought of the “Framing Britney Spears” movie. We also talk about working with Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, John Legend, The Backstreet Boys, Whitney Houston, and last but not least, Michael Jackson. The boys bond with David over their love of Madonna, Prince and more.  We figured today the perfect day to share this musical extravangaza blast from the past.  @louisyorkmusic @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope  BROUGHT TO YOU BY: CROCS - crocs.com (20% Off Crocs' New Brooklyn, Miami & Getaway Sandals with Code Sandals20) BADLANDS PETS - SUPERFOOD COMPLETE - badlandsranch.com/Velvet  (50% Off Your Regular-Priced Order w/ a 90-Day Money-Back Guarantee on Dog Food Vital To Your Dog's Health) INDEED - indeed.com/velvet (Seventy Five Dollar $75 Sponsored Job Credit To Get Your Jobs More Visibility)  TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFE (Visit One of Tropical Smoothie Cafe's 1400+ Locations or Order Online or Through Their App Their Summer Mocktail Smoothies) WOOGA (Download June's Journey Now on your iOS or Android Device) THE KARDASHIANS (New Season Streaming Now Only On Hulu) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. For one brief, beautiful moment in history, the social media sleuths were right. When Britney Spears' fans began to decode strange messaging in her quirky Instagram posts, it became clear that the formerly maligned popstar was living under the control of her abusive father by way of a particularly oppressive conservatorship. This resulted in a nation-wide movement to liberate Britney from her family and, by extension, the predatory industry that has exploited her for over two decades. But, well-intentioned as #FreeBritney was, did the movement have unintended consequences? Discussions include: the 2000s as the dark ages for popular culture, Vegas residencies as the death rattle for celebrity music careers, and the ongoing question of “agency” that seems to follows Britney Spears throughout her lifetime. Digressions include: Maia's irrational fear of Babe the pig and a chat about the emojis that define us.  (NOTE: We refer in this episode to Cara Cunningham as Chris Crocker, which is her dead name.) We chronicle Britney's return to the public eye following the release of Blackout and the beginning of her conservatorship, the ‘Toxic 2.0.' energy of first single Womaniser, the concept of the album ‘Circus' being about, you know... a circus, the spelling bee inspired If You Seek Amy and the resurgence of Radar. We even throw some shade to the rat that is James Corden, and we're not just talking about his role in Cinderella. We rebrand Snappt! And Floppt! to Snappt! After pop star Britney Spears' controversial 13-year conservatorship finally came to an end in November 2021, Spears credited the #FreeBritney movement: “I honestly think you guys saved my life.” Filmmakers Samantha Stark and Liz Day also played no small role. When their documentary “Framing Britney Spears” premiered in February of that year, it sparked a flurry of international news coverage and put the spotlight on a conservatorship that seemed less about protecting Spears than it was about controlling and silencing her — and enriching her father and conservator, Jamie Spears. In the months following their film, Samantha and Liz continued to delve into the story and their September 2021 follow-up film, the Emmy®-nominated “Controlling Britney Spears” laid out even more shocking revelations. The two filmmakers joined Mike and Ken for a deep dive exploration of the ins-and-outs of the conservatorship and the mechanisms used to surveil and manipulate Spears. How is it possible that a mega superstar, who kept to a rigorous performance schedule and was raking in millions of dollars, continued to be subjected to a court-ordered conservatorship? What caused some of the key people working for Britney to break their silence and open up to the filmmakers, at their own potential legal peril? And in what ways does the stigma of mental illness play a part in the Britney Spears saga? Tune in to our conversation to hear how these two highly skilled and determined journalists/filmmakers broke this important story, which continues to resonate and reverberate well-beyond Britney herself. “Controlling Britney Spears”, which is nominated for the 2022 Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, is available for streaming on Hulu.   Hidden Gems: Liz: 7 Up Samantha: Special Flight   Follow on Twitter: @starksamantha @LizDDay @topdocspod   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix. That is, if you're reading this on the day the episode was released. If not, then either happy belated birthday, or happy early birthday for next year. You choose. This was the first joke Phil's son was able to pull off: "What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint!" He's still working on our new favorite: "What's the secret to telling a good joke timing." Therapy in the future will be Phil's son going into a VR experience where a Pokemon-branded A.I. therapist goes through his father's social media and podcasts and then administers a virtual medication. Other pop stars discussed include Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Cher and Prince. We also talk about non-Pop musicians like Klaus Nomi, Bruce Springsteen. “Weird Al” Yankovic, Charli XCX, Hank Williams and the Ramones. We get into so many Britney songs: “...Baby One More Time”, “Gimme More”, “Work Bitch”, “Radar”, “Unusual You”, “Until the World Ends” (featuring Nikki Minaj & Ke$ha), “Oops I Did It Again”, “Toxic” and her rendition of Sonny & Cher's “The Beat Goes On”. Jake recommends this Mystery Show podcast episode about Britney (though he incorrectly attributes it to the podcast Invisibilia). Phil mentions the Netflix show This Is Pop. The third episode "Stockholm Syndrome" discusses Max Martin's team in Sweden, and one producer explains the piano-playing finger formation the he dubs “hit claw” (which was used to create "...Baby One More Time"). Here's the “Toxic” remix from the Promising Young Woman soundtrack, and here's the mash-up with the B-52s' “Love Shack”. Phil was familiar with Rolling Stone cover featuring Britney with a Teletubby, but had never noticed the Teletubby. The documentary about Britney's conservatorship (and the #freebritney movement) that we refer to is Framing Britney Spears. Here's Britney being interviewed by Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11. We don't even mention that Dan Aykroyd plays Britney's character's dad in the movie Crossroads! Fear not, the saga of bread & butter pickles controversy does continue in this episode. Here's Britney & Justin Timberlake's denim outfits. Marrisa's right, kefir is very similar to yogurt. Other types of alternative milks discussed include almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk. We talk about a lot of different iconic leather jacket looks, including those of Indiana Jones, Marlon Brando, Danny Zuko, Arthur Fonzerelli, Eddie Murphy, Ford Fairlane, Blade and The Matrix. We couldn't find any evidence of what Jake calls a “snowy river jacket” ever appearing in The Man from Snowy River. Sophie Gilbert, Spencer Kornhaber, and Shirley Li discuss the Hulu series about “the greatest love story ever sold” and ask: Is Pam & Tommy just repeating the exploitation it depicts? Or is its retelling of internet history revealing something new about our current culture? The sex tape at the core of the show is effectively the first instance of revenge porn online. It opened up questions of celebrity and privacy that we're still grappling today. Now, shows like Pam & Tommy (with which Pamela Anderson was not involved) similarly raise questions about where the line is with telling a public person's private story. The series also falls into a familiar category these days of the modern reconsideration of 90s culture: Framing Britney Spears, several American Crime Story iterations, even Girls5Eva and Yellowjackets. What is it about this era that's drawing us to it?  [Note: Spoilers through episode 6 of Pam & Tommy.] Further reading: Sophie Gilbert's review: Pam & Tommy and the Curse of the '90s Bombshell Learn more about your ad choices. February is almost over & we have quite a bit to talk about on this podcast. For some of us 90's babies, the Framing Britney Spears documentary (1:00)caught us by surprise. While Meghan said F Tory Lanez & got her a new boo (5:51). Texas experienced the worst weather ever(6:59),it was almost like Beyoncé's Ivy Park video was filmed there (9:37). Kanye probably won't be jumping on any stages any time soon since Kim filed for divorce(12:02). RiRi just decided that she's never making us music anymore since Savage Fenty is worth a Billi now (14:33). However, everyone is highly upset with B. Simone for telling y'all how to get a man(16:18). Even though for some reason Boosie seems to think he knows better especially when it comes to Lori Harvey (18:19). I finally get into my main topic of the episode which is your Morning Motivations & how to jump start your day. Such as cooking, yoga, music, & more(23:00)! For this episode we talk about two documentaries that deal with similar topics: "Framing Britney Spears" and "This Is Paris." "Framing Britney Spears" follows the Free Britney movement, which is dedicated to releasing the pop star from a conservatorship where her father controls all of her finances and medical decisions. "This Is Paris" focuses on another millennial celebrity: Paris Hilton. The documentary delves into her childhood experiences at boarding schools where she alleges that she was physically and emotionally abused. Our youth film critics got together on Zoom to talk about the movies, including how celebrity culture has changed since the early 2000's, and the ways that society addresses mental health issues among youth in America. Moderated by Sam Bernitz. Hosted by Grady Cutchins. Music by Kendrick Whiteman. Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. Even before the conservatorship, Britney Spears had to figure out how to navigate a stunningly sexist workplace. The kind of workplace where it was considered charming for a fully adult Ed McMahon to compliment your "pretty eyes" and ask if you have a boyfriend...when you're ten years old...and on national television. Jeannie and Eula have a heart-to-heart about the public narrative around Britney Spears, and how we all had a hand in creating her toxic, sexist workplace - one that only got worse once she became a mom. And they talk about how to do better from here on out. The documentary we discuss in this episode is https://www.hulu.com/series/the-new-york-times-presents-f22278d1-ef56-40e8-9227-af3a029ca6f4 (Framing Britney Spears,) available on Hulu. It's a great reminder that these young years are the building blocks for their future together. They close out with their weekly hits and misses – Lauren enjoyed a new series and Sarah had one too many forgetful moments this week!! Yes sports fans, this is an episode for you. Brett, of course, watched the full thing, but Danielle tirelessly devoted herself to watching half of an American Football game for you - the listeners. They spend the first half of the show discussing The Weeknd's half-time show, the commercials and the omnipotence of Paramount Plus. Later in the pod, Brett & Danielle investigate Framing Britney Spears and the very nature of pop-stardom before shaming Gina Carano who has been thankfully airlocked out of the Star Wars universe. Taylor and Alyssa discuss Chris Harrison's disappointing (to say the least) interview with Rachel Lindsey about controversial contestant Rachael Kirkconnell. They recap this week's Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Reunion and react to the ongoing f*ck boy drama in last night's Summer House episode. Lastly, they dive into Framing Britney (S1, E6 of 'The New York Times Presents' on FX/Hulu) and discuss Britney's impact on their lives.   *** This show is a part of the Podglomerate network, a company that produces, distributes, and monetizes podcasts. Fametracker's own Adam Sternbergh (oh, also the New York Times's but whatever)(hee) is back to discuss The Equalizer, the perfectly acceptable re-imagining of the '80s classic. Whom on the panel did the new verzh win over with casting coups, origami tradecraft, and similarities to Leverage and Blindspot? Who called it the three-camera sitcom of cop shows? And is anyone setting their DVR to watch more of it? We went Around The Dial with Framing Britney Spears, Married At First Sight, GBBO, Big Family Cooking Showdown, and Crime Scene: The Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel before finding ways to Defund The Police Shows in an Extra Credit from Francoise.
