Hollywood couldn't figure out how to sell a historical fiction political comedy about teenagers set twenty-five years in the past, but we're big fans of Andrew Fleming's 1999 film Dick and we're here to talk about it! Join in as we discuss teenage celebrity crushes, child stardom, an odd choice for weed storage, and a deep cast of sketch performers. Plus: Why does Nixon White House Counsel John Dean have a "special thanks" in the credits? Why is the New York Times review so fixated on connecting this movie to Monica Lewinsky? Anyone who went to school in the 80s and 90s recognizes the sparkly unicorns, day-glo dolphins and bejeweled kittens that adorned folders and pencil cases. Those memorable designs came from Lisa Frank, Inc., a brand that defined girlhood for a generation of Americans only to seemingly disappear overnight. Now, a new docuseries on Prime Video, Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, goes behind the neon-hued world of Lisa Frank to reveal a much darker reality. The four-part docuseries uncovers a stranger-than-fiction tale that takes viewers into a hidden world lurking at the heart of the company that wasn't all puppies and rainbows. Glitter & Greed features interviews with Lisa Frank, Inc. insiders and journalists who describe a toxic work environment and corporate greed that ultimately destroyed the once-thriving business.Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story was executive produced by Emmy Award-winning producer and director Mary Robertson who last revealed the dark underbelly of ‘90s kids TV shows with the hit docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. Mary was the showrunner of The New York Times Presents documentaries Framing Britney Spears and Controlling Britney Spears, both critically lauded documentaries that touched off a reckoning on Spears' treatment, misogyny, conservatorships and tabloid culture. (In the wake of both films, Ms. Spears's father was suspended as conservator and the judge terminated the conservatorship entirely.) Mary also helped create and executive produce The Weekly, whose first season garnered nine Emmy nominations and four wins as well as CNN's Tricky Dick, a portrait of Richard Nixon that the Wall Street Journal featured in its year-end best of TV list.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
“I am not a crook,” zei Nixon toen mensen het vertrouwen in hem begonnen te verliezen.
As the microphones go up, the Boys see the story about the English teacher reenacting the George Floyd incident, and wonder why he wasn't teaching English, which is his job. Also: there's a lot of fun stuff coming at the end of the season; taking time off; Liam Payne; Brian's new money guy sounds like a mob stereotype; Brian's big casino hit; for Jeff, overalls are inevitable; they're still pretending Jimmy Carter voted; Japan in WW1; Evil Ron Reagan and Tricky Dick; it's all cannibalism and tarp walls for a Kentucky woman; Gorilla Tape; Buffalo Bill; two-thirds of homeowners believe their house is haunted; Popeyes runs a little slow; pastries; The Simpsons; Adult Swim; football; and finally, Jeff's turn in the barrel.
This week the boys go back to August 1974! It didn't take long for Richard Nixon to earn the nickname "Tricky Dick," but was he really any more tricky than the typical politician? You bet he was! John Farrell, a long-time journalist and author of numerous books on political leaders, including Richard Nixon, The Life, discusses the many campaigns of Richard Nixon, from the red scare tactics that swept him to office, to the southern strategy that changed America's political map forever.Support the show

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil "The Media Giant" Haley and co-host Lefty of Legacy Filmmakers interview Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz. QUIET ON SET features unprecedented access to key cast members, writers, and crew spanning Schneider's popular series at Nickelodeon. Cast and crew of All That, The Amanda Show, iCarly, Victorious, Sam & Cat, Zoey 101 and more reveal inappropriate on-set behavior, chronicling a pattern of gross, abusive, and manipulative activity that unfolded across decades. In addition, former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) speaks publicly, for the first time, about the abuse he suffered at the hands of Brian Peck, his former dialogue coach who was convicted in 2004 for his crimes against Drake and ordered to register as a sex offender. Quiet on Set comes from Emmy Award-winning producer and director Mary Robertson. Mary was the showrunner of The New York Times Presentsdocumentaries Framing Britney Spears and Controlling Britney Spears, both critically lauded documentaries that touched off a reckoning on Spears' treatment, misogyny, conservatorships and tabloid culture. (In the wake of both films, Ms. Spears's father was suspended as conservator and the judge terminated the conservatorship entirely.) Mary also helped create and executive produce The Weekly, whose first season garnered nine Emmy nominations and four wins as well as CNN's Tricky Dick, a portrait of Richard Nixon that the Wall Street Journal featured in its year-end best of TV list. Emma Schwartz is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist. At Maxine, she divides her time between directing and developing documentary projects across the company's slate.

A desire to win at any cost earned him the name "Tricky Dick" and carried him from Whittier, California, to the Presidency of the United States, but it also proved his undoing. Over the past five decades, there have been several docudramas devoted to stories from The Nixon Era including films focusing on his presidency (Nixon), the investigation of the Watergate break-in (All The President's Men, Dick), and even smaller episodes WITHIN his presidency such as Elvis & Nixon which came out just a few years ago starring Michael Shannon as Elvis and Kevin Spacey as Richard Nixon. But about 15 years ago, Ron Howard directed a somewhat unique POV of President Nixon.....the story of an independently filmed interview between Tricky Dick himself (Frank Langella) and a then somewhat well-known media personality David Frost who was played by Michael Sheen. This movie was also adapted by an acclaimed stage play written by Peter Morgan (The Crown) who would himself adapt his play for the big screen. And not only did it receive some awards attention (nominated for Best Picture) but considering its subject matter, it turned out to be quite entertaining! So it's time to revisit this often funny docudrama also co-starring Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Matthew Macfayden, and Rebecca Hall and remember.....if the President does it, it's NOT ILLEGAL! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Streaming through the Tunnel of Love, we go DEEP INSIDE “Deep Throat,” one of the most iconic, profitable & controversial American films ever made… as we welcome “Deep Throat” auteur director Gerard Damiano's son, Gerard Damiano, Jr., & daughter, Christar Damiano, commemorating Deep Throat's 50th anniversary with 4k restoration “Director's Cut” screenings, talkback panels & parties around the world! Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality! Deep Throat helped spark the Sexual Revolution & “Porno Chic,” became a household name & code for the Watergate informant who exposed President Richard Nixon. Yes, Tricky Dick tried to shut down “Deep Throat,” but “Deep Throat” shut down Tricky Dick! It also made a huge star out of Linda Lovelace, who later revealed she was abused by her mother, & then by her husband Chuck Trayner. Though Linda never said she was abused on the set of Deep Throat, anti-porn feminists like Catherine McKinnon blamed porn. According to the Damianos, the opposite was true; Linda was a victim of Chuck, but never abused on set; indeed, she found freedom & self-esteem in being treated like a star. From abused child to battered wife to celebrated porn star to anti-porn Born Again Christian & then back to a form of porn just before her lethal car accident, Linda's story is complex, so many mistakenly think she was abused on the “Deep Throat” set, & some screenings were canceled or picketed, though most have been warmly welcomed. Now it's LA's turn, & I will be Moderator for Talkback panels on Friday 6/2 at Laemmle Royal in West LA (with Nina Hartley & Herschel Savage!) & Saturday 6/3 at 910WeHo in West Hollywood. Actor Barry Miller—who attended Warren Beatty & Jack Nicholson's 1976 fundraiser to help Deep Throat fight “obscenity” charges—will attend, + intimacy coordinator Erin Tillman & fetish model Lux Lives will be on my 910WeHo panel, with a post-panel VIP party featuring AGWA & Absinthe Absente to pour down our deep throats! Speaking of beverages, check out the “Deep Throat” Coca Cola scene to see where US. Supreme Court (In)Justice Clarence Thomas probably picked up his fixation with “pubic hair on my Coke can”… Have a Merry Masturbation Month climax, enjoy this FDR (F*ck Da Rich) while you still can & join Me, Max, the Damianos & More Sex Positive Allies at Deep Throat in LA! "What is best and weakest in America goes out to reciprocating strength and deficiencies in Richard Nixon." It's difficult to think of a more electric meeting of author and subject than Garry Wills and Richard Nixon, a meeting that produced what might be the best book ever written about American politics, Wills's Nixon Agonistes: The Crisis of the Self-Made Man. What begins as reporting from the campaign trail during the 1968 presidential contest—where Wills introduces us to Nixon, George Wallace, Nelson Rockefeller, and more—eventually becomes a profound meditation on the fate of liberalism in the United States. Wills found in Nixon the key to unlocking the reigning—but by then faltering—myths of their country's history and self-understanding, and what they reveal about each other. Along the way he discusses the complex psychological dance between Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower; takes us on a tour of Nixon's hometown, Whittier, California; describes the Republicans' "southern strategy"; examines the roiling anger and protests over the Vietnam War; and offers on-the-ground reportage from the 1968 conventions (the GOP's in Miami, the Democrats', infamously, in Chicago). Matt and Sam try to make sense of it all and ponder what Nixon Agonistes might say about how we got here and where we're going. Meet Richard Nixon in this week's episode. OK, actually meet David Frye -- widely acclaimed as the best Nixon impersonator ever -- who rode his brilliant impression to a series of hit albums in the 1970s. Frye was a struggling impressionist when he hit on lampooning politicians rather than the Hollywood stars favored by most comics. He did a great Bobby Kennedy and LBJ, but his Nixon is transcendent and Frye captured it all -- not just the voice but Tricky Dick's unique mannerisms and facial expressions. And furthermore - Visa and MasterCard are public companies - which are owned by the "PUBLIC" these stocks are in our 401K's IRA's, Mutual Funds etc... Do not let congress fool you that these are evil companies who overcharge people - No in fact if you tune in and listen I explain who is getting all the money and we will be posting a detailed article soon that will go over exactly what went on with the Durbin Amendment and what he is going to do with this piece of trash. And if Senator Durbin would like to come on the podcast - I would happily debate him Have great weekend - and thanks for listening to Fintech Friday's with Allen and Justin Carpe Diem - Peace Out

WELCOME BACK!!Amphetamines were outlawed in 1970. It was a Tricky Dick move. He made amphetamines a very-illegal Schedule Two drug. No more bottles of "mother's little helper" available over the counter.By the late 1970s, some intrepid manufacturers of 'diet pills' were concocting concentrated formulations of caffeine, ephedrine and sometimes taurine. It was an attempt to legally create the amphetamine buzz that was so prized by speed-freaks in the '60s.Hundreds of milligrams of caffeine in a concentrated form will get you buzzing....it might even help you lose weight. It will ALSO keep you awake for finals. Hold on a minute...why are middle-aged ladies wanting to lose weight also taking H.S. finals? They aren't. The whole "trucker speed" craze of the '80s was primarily targeted to teens. You could buy all you wanted! They weren't 'real' amphetamines...so what was the harm? You may be wondering what this has to do with the Mighty 'KRP. Turns out Herb found a new advertiser. He was doing his job! He made a sale! Unfortunately, Herb's new buddy, Dave, is running a "weight loss clinic." He's really slinging legal, but very dangerous, 'pep' pills. They'll help you lose weight. They'll also help you pass out in gym class. Not a lot of laughs in this one, but it's a great message and well presented by the gang. Throw back a couple of Black Beauties and "FocusIn", fellow babies...it's time for "Pills."WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. Nixon's road to the Presidency, as we've already seen in the 1960 election, was at times rocky but always steady. And we've officially reached Craig's "Forrest Gump days," in which he encouraged Nixon to run for President against Ronald Reagan. Plus, in lieu of a cocktail history...hear the history of the time Craig had martinis with Nixon!
Arguably the most talked about and controversial figure in American political history, Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States and the only president to resign. But how did he get to become THE Richard Nixon? We're breaking down his road to politics and the presidency and his relationship to...his mother. Also, we're talking about the history of beef stroganoff! Follow Craig's recipe below to cook yours up and eat with us. "Ok, podcasters, this week's recipe is going to be a little bit of a challenge but well worth it: Beef Stroganoff for four. Remember to check that you have all the ingredients before you begin. Step 1. The day before, take a pound and a half of your favorite steak and cut it into two inch by 1/2 inch strips. Put the strips a bowl and lightly salt and pepper them. Put the strips in the fridge over night. Step 2. On the day of the meal, pull bowl of strips out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature, about twenty minutes. Step 3. In a sauce pan, melt one tablespoon of butter then stir in one tablespoon of olive oil. Then whisk in one tablespoon of flour. (It's called a roux.) Step 4. In a small pot, bring one cup of beef broth to a boil. Then whisk the broth into the butter flour mix. When it is smooth, whisk in one teaspoon of mustard (Dijon is best). Turn off the heat. Step 5. Following directions on the package, in a large pot, boil enough pappardelle pasta to serve four. Step 6. In a frying pan melt another tablespoon butter and another tablespoon of olive oil. Add two minced cloves of garlic, a tablespoon of chopped onion, and then the steak strips. Brown the strips to your preferred doneness and remove them from pan to a large bowl. Step 7. Turn on the heat under the butter/mustard sauce and whisk in three tablespoons of sour cream. (Takes about 4 minutes at most.). Step 8. Drain the pasta and pour it over the steak strips. Then pour the butter/mustard/broth sauce over the pasta and steak. Toss the sauce, pasta and steak together and serve."
This episode I'll tell you about Amil Dinsio and the Dinsio crew, the most prolific bank burglars (not robbers!) during the 1960s through the early 70s. I'll give you all the details of their biggest score, stealing $13 million in Tricky Dick Nixon's dirty campaign contribution money. Most of this information comes straight from a book self-published by Amil Dinsio to tell the real story and not the one his nephew told to that journalist in 2004. GUEST TORIO VAN GROL @toriovangrol

Richard Nixon seemed poised to heal the divisions in the Republican Party after the landslide defeat of Goldwater. He said all the right things to win his party's nomination, but once in office he proved himself to be a snake in more ways than one. He was a paranoid president who wiretapped the White House, kept actual lists of enemies, popped pills, shoved aides, and might've secretly been in love with his best friend. Nixon's always going to be tied to the Watergate scandal, but there's so much more to know about so-called “Tricky Dick.” Very Presidential is presented by audiochuck.Instagram: @audiochuckTwitter: @audiochuckFacebook: /audiochuckllc Very Presidential is hosted by Ashley Flowers.Instagram: @ashleyflowersTikTok: @ashleyflowerscrimejunkieTwitter: @Ash_FlowersFacebook: /AshleyFlowers.AF
