This week I chat with award-winning filmmakers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz to discuss their Emmy-nominated, critically acclaimed, and hugely popular MAX and Discovery ID docuseries - "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV," which sheds light on the troubling experiences of child actors in the entertainment industry, particularly those who worked on popular Nickelodeon shows produced by powerful showrunner Dan Schneider. Emma and Mary explain how they brought the project together and the keys to getting this very sensitive information from folks who were hesitant to talk. We also discuss why these types of projects are so important. The groundbreaking series set the internet ablaze with revelations of a toxic environment on set that included a voice coach getting arrested for sexually abusing one of the young stars. Dozens of former child stars have spoken out both during the series and since causing a reckoning in Hollywood and forcing the industry to make changes. Afterwards, I discuss the recent slew of insane announcements in entertainment, including a famous chicken restaurant entering the streaming wars and journalists declaring cable TV dead.
At one time, being “Slimed” on Nickelodeon was seen as the ultimate television rite of passage and a harmless bit of fun. But as “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” — Mary Robertson (“Framing Britney Spears”) and Emma Schwartz' (“Elon Musk's Crash Course”) devastating investigation of the warped culture at Nickelodeon in the 90s and 2000s — reveals, the atmosphere both on and off the set at Nickelodeon could be anything but harmless, fun, or safe. Joining Ken on the pod to discuss their Emmy-nominated, 5-part Investigation Discovery docuseries, Mary and Emma detail the rise and fall of Nickelodeon “Golden Boy” Dan Schneider. His oversight of some of the most successful shows on the network left some staffers, young actors and the actors' parents deeply upset or worse. In the case of Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, who comes forward for the first time to tell his story on camera in the series, he was sexually abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck. “Quiet on Set” pulls back the curtain on what went wrong at Nickelodeon and gives these young actors a chance to finally tell their side of the story. “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program. “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is streaming on Discovery Plus, Hulu and Max Follow: @_rmaryr_ on Instagram and @mkrobertson on twitter/X @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X Hidden Gems: Mary: “To Be and to Have” Emma: “Jacinta” The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Growing up in the 90's, Nickelodeon was DA BOMB. There was nothing more entertaining than seeing kids get slimed, or the relentlessly silly sketches of “All That.” But was there something more disgusting beneath the surface than that shiny green slime? Giovonnie Samuels and Bryan Hearne join us to talk all about the revelations of the recent documentary “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.” They reflect on the toxic work culture, abuse, how they've dealt with their trauma, and what life's been like after the documentary. On March 17th, 2024, the first episode of a five-part docuseries, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV aired on Investigation Discovery and MAX, accusing Dan Schneider of fostering a hostile work environment and overly sexualizing young cast members while he was in charge of several hit kid's shows. The series also insinuates that Dan may be a sexual predator. Is he? Or is the docuseries a hatchet job that unfairly has unfairly demonized someone? EXCLUSIVE REACTIONS: Mayim, Jenna von Oy, and Christy Carlson Romano dive deep into the explosive QUIET ON SET documentary, from the heartbreaking abuse exposed by some of their peers, to their own firsthand accounts of the pressures they faced as child actors. Mayim, Christy, and Jenna reflect on how the model for kids' tv made child actors particularly vulnerable, the dangers of children working in the high pressure entertainment industry, the trauma-bonding nature watching the doc has had for their peer community, whether the system can truly be reformed, and ways to effectively pivot the conversation from sensationalistic gossip to promoting real change in the industry. Christy reveals why she has currently chosen NOT to watch the documentary, breaks down her reservations about the exploitative nature of "trauma tourists," and explains more about the important advocacy work organizations like the Looking Ahead program (@alifeinthearts) are doing to connect child actors and their families with essential resources. THEY ALSO DISCUSS: - The dangers of dangling fame in front of child actors- The role parents have to play, even if a studio tries to remove them- The importance of teaching children to use their voices- The crucial need for female representation and trauma-informed care in the entertainment industry This episode is a must-listen, from revealing the dark side of how the entertainment millions love was actually made, to the exploration of what we can all do to ensure the safety of children everywhere. Nickelodeon was an important part of all of our childhoods. A reliable ‘friend' that was always there for us. The impact that this tv studio had on our lives with the incredible lineup of shows and cartoons can not be denied. Unfortunately, much of it's legacy has been tarnished by the recent documentary called, “Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.” In an effort to go back to the mini-byte days, we start this brunch off with the history of Nickelodeon, followed by some discussion of all of our favorite shows. Then we dive into the disturbing documentary. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Candice Lim is joined by Slate culture writer Nadira Goffe to discuss their takeaways from Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, a documentary series that details the toxic work environment, child abuse and disturbing events that occurred on the set of creator Dan Schneider's shows. Schneider was the mind behind some of Nickelodeon's most-watched programming including All That, The Amanda Show and iCarly. But several dark truths were unearthed following the arrest of two child predators who worked on his sets, along with accusations of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and alleged sexual behavior by Schneider himself. Following the docuseries' release, former child actors have used social media to make statements and speak about their experiences on Nickelodeon sets. But has the internet's reaction from both viewers and former child actors helped or hurt the purpose and aim of the docuseries itself? The new docu-series “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is shedding light on the abuse that early-2000s child stars faced behind the scenes of our favorite Nickelodeon shows. The doc focuses especially on Drake Bell (of “Drake & Josh” fame), but leaves out half the story. Is a program that claims to be raising awareness about abuse ultimately just perpetuating it? We look at the chilling realities of grooming and child sexual abuse as we unpack the disturbing revelations from the Max Nickelodeon documentary, "Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV." It highlights the exploitation and abuse of "Drake & Josh" co-star Drake Bell, and details allegations of toxic behavior behind the scenes on some of the most popular Nickelodeon shows of the time, which were run by a man named Dan Schneider. Drake Bell's story and the 'Quiet on Set' documentary shed light on the systemic issues of child abuse within the entertainment industry and Hollywood. We explore the mechanisms of grooming, the impact on victims, and the often overlooked bystander effect that allows such child abuse to continue unchecked. Drawing on insights from child sexual abuse survivors and experts, we offer strategies for healing and empowerment for those affected by similar traumas. This exploration is not just about uncovering the dark truths but also about providing a beacon of hope and understanding for highly sensitive people and anyone on a journey of self-improvement and seeking to safeguard the innocence and wellbeing of children in a world where their vulnerability is exploited.
