The Cinematography Podcast Episode 315: Stephen Murphy The FX and Hulu limited series Say Nothing is a historical drama that explores the harrowing period known as The Troubles in Northern Ireland, spanning four decades from the 1970s to the 1990s. The series delves into the complexities of the conflict, focusing on sisters Dolours and Marian Price and their part in the IRA. The sisters' involvement in the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville, a widowed mother of ten, is a devastating narrative in the show. Her disappearance, and her family's decades-long search for answers, provides a heart-wrenching backdrop to the larger conflict. Irish cinematographer Stephen Murphy, BSC, ISC worked on the final two episodes of the series. He's earned a Best Cinematography BAFTA and IFTA nomination for his work on Say Nothing. “Say Nothing is a real story about the very real horrors of what happened in Ireland during The Troubles,” he says. “But I think in a modern context, given what's going on in the rest of the world, it has a lot to say about the idea of romanticizing rebellion and how somebody could be interested or attracted to that, and slowly over time, fully come to realize the consequences of what they're doing.” Stephen has cultivated a reputation for his masterful use of darkness in his work, a key reason he was brought on board for the series' conclusion. “A lot of the work I do is dark and it deals with darkness. I really like darkness more than I like the light probably,” he laughs. In the finale, Dolours Price finally reveals her role in Jean McConville's disappearance. To depict the events of what happened that night, the crew was on a rural stretch of dirt road and dunes alongside the ocean. As a storm approached, Stephen had to change the lighting plan, relying instead on car headlights and flashlights to illuminate the scene. “It actually worked out far better than my original plan was going to. It was more truthful, it was probably darker, but I think it worked better for the story and better for the tone and the atmosphere,” he says. When approaching emotionally resonant scenes, Stephen strives for a visual simplicity that guides the audience without distraction. “I think for me, it's a question of figuring out a way to get out of the way of the camera and not try and impose anything overly stylistic on the scene,” he says. “I love visual simplicity. And I'm trying to present the scene in a way that is helping the audience focus on what's important to the scene and not be distracted by unnecessary showmanship.” Beyond Say Nothing, Stephen Murphy also served as director of photography for two episodes of the second season of The Tourist, the Netflix dark comedy starring Jamie Dornan as an amnesiac. In a conversation moderated by Emmy-nominated editor Michael Ruscio, ACE, three of the pros behind FX's Say Nothing — creator and writer Joshua Zetumer, director Michael Lennox and cinematographer Stephen Murphy — delve into the process of crafting the haunting historical drama. Adapted from the nonfiction book of the same name by Patrick Radden Keefe, the scripted series conveys the complexity of the Troubles in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Lennox, a Northern Ireland native, originally thought the Troubles were a story that he — like anyone from the area — knew in full. But his experience on the series opened his eyes to many of the details and horrors from the traumatic period. “We know what happened in the late '60s to the present day, but I didn't quite know it to this depth,” he says. “I felt that this could be an important piece of television which asked some really profound and tough and interesting questions, and I wanted to be part of that.”
Patrick Radden Keefe is a writer and investigative journalist known for books such as Chatter, Say Nothing, and The Snakehead. His work has been recognized with the National Magazine Award, the National Book Critics' Circle Award, and the Orwell Prize for Political Writing. The New York Times named Say Nothing one of the 20 best books of the 21st Century. His reporting on the Sackler family was the inspiration for the 2023 Netflix limited series PAINKILLER and his book Say Nothing was adapted into a limited series for FX/Hulu of the same name. SAY NOTHING was named as one of the 10 Best Shows of 2024 by Variety, Vulture, and the New York Times. Keefe has also written extensively for many publications, including The New Yorker, Slate, and The New York Times magazine. He is currently a staff writer at The New Yorker.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"We know no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality,” a man once said, When it has come to the pursuit of Kneecap, the ridiculousness has extended far beyond the British public to its media and politicians too. It has reached the Irish political class and media as well.Kneecap have apologised to the families of murdered MPs but still they are pursued by those lost in what Philip Roth called the “ecstasy of sanctimony”.On Free State, Joe and Dion ask what does it tell us about the ability to comment freely in the modern world? At a time when n it seems critical to be able to speak out, it is under constant threat.Dion also recalls a GAA road trip while Joe explains why he considers Jesus Christ a role model. In this episode we interview D. Óg, an Irish Republican and Irish language activist who works with Iskra Books, and their Irish language imprint Bradán Feasa. In this discussion we talk about the Iskra Books publication The Dark: Selected Writings of Brendan Hughes. Hughes, was a former Irish Republican Army volunteer, political prisoner, and Hunger Striker. And while he is a very well known figure within Irish Republican circles and among those who have studied the provisional IRA, some folks may also have become introduced to him through the book and the Fx/Hulu series Say Nothing. In this episode I talk to D a bit about several of The Dark's writings, about the politics of Brendan Hughes, his internationalism, his solidarity with Palestinians, and his lifelong commitment to a 32 county socialist Irish Republic. Along the way we talk about Hughes' response to the so-called Good Friday Agreement, or has Hughes called it “Got F*ck All,” his critiques of the political trajectory of Sinn Féin, and more. We highly recommend you check out this book from the comrades at Iskra Books. As with all their work there is a free pdf version you can download from there website, so do that to check it out, but also I really recommend ordering yourself a physical copy to support their work and to add this beautiful book to your collection. I also just want to mention that if you're interested in conversations about counterinsurgency, Orisanmi Burton and I have released part one of a two part conversation on Frank Kitson and his book Low Intensity Operations, for a brief period Kitson was in charge of the counterrevolutionary campaign against the IRA, as well as counterrevolutionary wars in Kenya against the Mau Mau, and in Malaya. We will link that in the show notes along with some other discussions we've had about Ireland and Irish revolutionary politics over the years. And part two of my conversation with Orisanmi Burton about Kitson's Low Intensity Operations will be this coming Friday at 10 AM Eastern Time (US) on our YouTube channel. A link to that will be in the show notes as well. In addition, we also have a conversation with Mark Neocleous tomorrow Tuesday the 18th at 12:30 PM ET on his new book Pacification: Social War and the Power of Police, and one on Thursday with James Kilgore the new zine he's put together with Vic Liu on Lessons in Global Solidarity. As always if you appreciate the work we do with this podcast, the best way to support our work is to become a patron of the show. It's also the best way to follow all of our work, you'll receive an email with every episode whether it's a YouTube episode or an audio episode and you'll be notified when we're starting up any of our study groups which you always have access to as a patron. On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Josh Zetumer. Originally from San Diego, Josh broke into screenwriting on the back of a script that got on the Black List. This led to working on Quantum of Solace, which led to the 2014 RoboCop reboot and the Peter Berg-directed Patriots Day in 2016. Most recently, Josh adapted and showran the FX show about the Irish Troubles, Say Nothing, which was easily one of the best shows of 2024! Patrick Radden Keefe is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Patrick is an incredible non-fiction writer, he's written a number of books including 2019's amazing Say Nothing, about the troubles in Northern Ireland. The book was the basis for the successful TV series that was on FX last year. He's also behind the Winds of Change podcast, which examined the potential of CIA involvement in the Scorpions hit song. We had a great talk here about falling in love with The New Yorker, counterfeit wine, Celebrity Apprentice, the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum heist, unexamined rock and roll conspiracies, and so much more. It was a great talk, excited to share it. Listen and subscribe!
Summary: We'll make it quick this week, folks! Or not, since Holly and Devin can't resist waxing poetic about how awesome novellas are. Shorter than a novel, longer than a short story, these ~160 page books really pack a punch. Growing in popularity in Holly's wheelhouse lately but still more rare in Devin's, this corner of published works is sometimes overlooked but always worth digging into more deeply, especially if you enjoy watching authors use economy of words to create a world you're sucked into. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:15): Holly discussed We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, a gothic horror novella following Merricat Blackwood, an 18 year old girl who lives on her family's estate with her older sister Constance and their ailing uncle Julian. The Blackwood family used to be larger but was decimated by arsenic poisoning at a family dinner six years before the novel begins, for which Constance was accused and acquitted. Their days pass in happy isolation until cousin Charles appears, seeking to claim the Blackwood fortune. His presence threatens their secluded way of life, and Merricat feels she must act swiftly to keep them all safe from his designs. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel explores themes of societal cruelty, mob mentality, and the persecution of those who are different. Through Merricat and Constance, the reader explores human nature and society's treatment of outsiders. The story can be read as a subversive take on women's roles, with Constance as the domestic caretaker and Merricat as a defiant, untamed force. Jackson creates a chilling atmosphere of dread and paranoia, influencing modern gothic fiction and psychological thrillers we see today. She explores the lines between social ostracization and self-imposed exile, how the Blackwoods' past defines their present and how Constance and Merricat cope differently with their trauma. As a novella, Holly was impacted the most by Jackson's effective writing in so few pages. She felt joy at every single sentence, every weird quirk of the characters, the tone that was partly childlike and partly old fashioned, every detail about their house and their shopping and the claustrophobia of it all. The Heart (16:56): Devin discussed Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood, a collection of three novellas that can stand alone but also work in harmony as a collection. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are three engineers with different specialities, living in different places, united by friendship and their hatred for men thrust into their lives. Whether you're following Mara as she fights for space living with Liam, Sadie as she grapples with rejection while trapped in an elevator with Erik, or Hannah as she struggles for survival (and control of herself) with Ian in the arctic, these novellas are delightfully feminist and steamy. Devin's key takeaways were: As with many of Hazelwood's works, these novellas are grounded first and foremost in feminism and women in STEM; the three protagonists are very different but united in their work in the sciences and the challenges they face as women in a male-dominated field. As a novella, these stories stay tight and build romantic tension by putting the protagonists in closed environments; roommates, trapped in an elevator, in a tiny research facility in frigid conditions. By limiting the scope of locations and characters, Hazelwood could more efficiently create the perfect cocktail of emotion, tension, and chemistry that makes for great Enemies to Lovers reading. A standout component of the novella collection was the men; each in their own way was misunderstood by the female protagonists and for good reason. The flip of the switch from skepticism and assumption that they're just one of those sexist, ladder-climbing men to understanding and attraction was a blast to read. Hot On the Shelf (29:51): Devin: Likeable Badass by Alison Fragle, PhD Holly: Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson What's Making Our Hearts Race (34:52): Devin: Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 on Max Holly: Say Nothing on Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Craig welcomes writer and showrunner Joshua Zetumer, creator of the limited series Say Nothing, to explore the process of dramatizing real events — particularly when the subject matter can be volatile. They discuss how to keep a sprawling historical epic from feeling like a lecture, keeping a consistent tone, humanizing complicated people, and how not to get sued by the people who were really involved. They also answer listener questions on following up with people after the fires, charting the emotional journey of the audience, and whether writers need to cite their sources when writing about real events. Speaking to an historian, Dolours Price discussed her life as a volunteer in the Provisional Irish Republican Army. Beginning in the 1970s, Dolours and her sister, Marian, convinced its operatives, including leader Gerry Adams, to let them fight in their guerilla war against British troops in Belfast. Throughout The Troubles, the sisters were part of a secret IRA unit whose missions included robbing banks, blowing up cars, and making traitors disappear. But decades later, as Adams negotiated an end to the conflict, Dolours became disillusioned about her past actions and the future of Northern Ireland.Based on the book by Patrick Radden Keefe, “Say Nothing” tells Price's four-decade story as a young IRA soldier and her attempts later in life to set the record straight. The series by FX on Hulu also focuses on the search for the mother of ten children, whose 1972 disappearance threatens to take down some of modern day Ireland's most powerful figures.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "SAY NOTHING" BEGIN IN THE FINAL NINE MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.Crime of the Week: rat race. One night in Belfast in 1972, a mother of ten was abducted from her home in front of her children and never seen again. But the new FX series Say Nothing isn't just true crime – it's part of a more complex history. Because this particular woman was kidnapped and killed by members of the Irish Republican Army during the period known as the Troubles. And decades later, one of the women involved in her disappearance still grapples with her memories and whether to tell the truth about what happened.
