Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio! This is Ypsilanti's college football show and the official podcast of Ypsi11.com.Here's something to look forward to this offseason: Saturday conversations between myself and Justin Coffin — formerly of Hustle Belt and MAC Football Pod fame. It won't be every single week, but the two of us will get together for regular conversations about the MAC's biggest topics. This week, we're focusing on Maurice Linguist's exit at Buffalo for Alabama. No, he's not going to be a head coach, he's leaving for a high-end assistant position. Is this the start of a new trend in the (arguably) wrong direction for MAC-level head coaches? Or is this the start of a very breakable cycle?Hopefully, MAC coaches can get more luck than what they've seen lately. Either way, Buffalo should feel pretty grateful for how Linguist was able to come into a difficult situation when Lance Leipold left for Kansas in late April 2021. Linguist wasn't the Bulls' coach until May, and right before he took the Buffalo job he was a recent hire to be Michigan's co-defensive coordinator. Happy Friday folks! We have actual football games this week! (Not MAC games, but still...) Next week at this time, we'll have MAC games to preview, and boy are we excited about it. Before we get there, we have two final season previews to bring you this week. Ball State and Buffalo won their respective divisions last year and met at Ford Field, with the Cardinals walking away with a 38-28 victory and their first MAC title since 1996. To start off the show this week, Zach and Steve jump right into their preview of the Bulls. Lance Leipold left for Kansas in March, leaving Buffalo with a shortened time span to find a new coach. Maurice Linguist was hired shortly thereafter, after having spent 2020 as the defensive backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys. He spent much of the decade before that bouncing around the college football universe, and was actually the DB coach at Buffalo from 2012-2013. Along with the transition in the coaching staff, the Bulls experienced a ton of turnover on their roster as well. Jaret Patterson is gone to the NFL, three offensive lineman are gone, as are a number of big contributors on the defense. QB Kyle Vantrease and RB Kevin Marks lead the way on offense, as does James Patterson on the defensive side of the ball. There is still talent here. The question is, how will the new staff plug the holes left by graduation and the transfer portal? The answer to that question could determine the success of the Bulls season. In the west, Ball State returns 20 of 22 starters and have their sights set on another MAC championship. Drew Plitt, Justin Hall, and a veteran offensive line lead a high powered offense, and the linebacking corps leads what could be one of the best defenses in the conference. Can the offensive line improve in pass protection? Can the pass defense improve? If the Cardinals can answer those two questions, they have all of the other tools they need to repeat as conference champions. Thanks for stopping by this week, folks. We look forward to talking about some actual games next week! We'll get the episode out a day early so that you have it prior to the three MAC games Thursday night. Have a great weekend, and we'll see you back here next week! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
EPISODE 31 In our final MAC Previews episode of the offseason, we finish with three teams that have varying degrees of experience in the MAC Championship game: Northern Illinois, Buffalo, and Western Michigan. NIU (1:52) has 88 freshmen on its football roster right now. Yes, 88. Sure there are a good number of third-year, redshirt-freshmen lumped in there, but they're going to be going up against sixth-year seniors and fifth-year juniors. Can we expect things to materialize into W's? Buffalo (19:00) had to replace its best head coach of all time during the spring — not even the winter; Kansas hired Lance Leipold in late April. Maurice Linguist seems like a good hire for the Bulls' program, but it's just not going to be easy to install a new playbook and be competent about it in just a short handful of months. At least there's still some starting talent that's been leftover. WMU (30:30) has the potential to have the best offense in the MAC this year. WMU also has the potential to have an incredibly talented defense not hold up its end of the bargain. Also, Kaleb Eleby is the man. JOIN MY MACTION-SIDED DISCORD! Another week is in the books, folks. Congrats, you made it! We're happy to ring in the weekend with you with episode 47 of the podcast. There was a lot to discuss this week! In the news this week, there have been a few transfer stories coming out of Buffalo. On the gridiron, safety Tyrone Hill entered the portal after totaling 31 tackles and 6 pass break-up's last year for the Bulls. New head coach Maurice Linguist will certainly have his work cut out for him this fall, as Hill is now the 14th Bull to enter the portal. On the hardwood, sophomore guard Malik Zachery announced his transfer out of upstate New York, though he never actually played a game for the Bulls due to some legal troubles. On the soccer pitch, the MAC announced Georgia Southern and Georgia State as new affiliate members for men's soccer. Both programs will join the conference for the 2021-2022 season, and will increase the number of schools to eight. Best of luck to the Eagles and Panthers as they begin their MAC journey. Lastly in the news, Toledo became the first MAC school to announce that they would have full capacity for football games in the fall, as well as the first school in Ohio to do so. We can only hope that this is the first sign that we'll have a “normal” football season this year. It will be interesting to see if other MAC teams will follow suit. We know Rockets fans are excited to return to the Glass Bowl in September! In this weeks' spring sports recap, the boys touch on the end of the road for Kent State's women's golf team, who finished the season with a 17th place finish at last weeks' NCAA Championships. Though they fell short of their ultimate goal of a title, the Flashes still had an incredible season, capturing their 22nd straight MAC title. In softball, Miami also saw their season come to a close, as the Redhawks went 0-2 in their NCAA sub-regional. The Redhawks fought hard, but ultimately fell 3-2 to Notre Dame on Friday and 7-1 to Northwestern on Saturday. Miami still had a great year, setting a program record for wins and finishing with a final record of 46-11. In baseball, we're heading into the final week of the season. Two games separate first place Central Michigan and second place Ball State, and they are the only two teams who still have a shot to capture the conference title. Central takes on Toledo this week, while the Cardinals will take on Miami. Ball State has little room for error if they want to catch the Chippewas, and will likely need to sweep the Redhawks if they want to have a chance. We will see how this weekend plays out! To close out the show this week, the boys take a look at the newly released 2021 college football win total predictions (courtesy of DraftKings). Zach and Sam run down the projected total for each team, and give their thoughts on which teams are too high and too low. We're just about three months away from the start of the season, and the boys agree that it can't get here soon enough! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Happy Friday folks! We hope you've all had a wonderful week, and we're excited to help you kick off your weekend. Zach has found his way back to the show this week, and he and Sam are ready to break down the week that was in the MAC. Kicking off the news segment this week, Ball State announced a 2025 non-conference football game against Auburn, while Bowling Green announced that their season opener this year at Tennessee will be played on Thursday, September 2nd. Exciting news for both programs! Will either be able to pull out a victory in SEC country? Only time will tell. Elsewhere in football, the boys give an update on the situation at Buffalo, where 13 Bulls remain in the transfer portal after the hiring of new head coach Maurice Linguist. His ability to keep some of that talent around may have a significant impact on the Bulls moving forward. In some exciting football news, former Ohio QB and MAC legend Nathan Rourke signed a three year deal with his hometown BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. With the league set to begin their season on August 5th, we know a lot of MAC fans will be paying attention to how Rourke's initial season north of the border plays out. To close out the news, new NIU men's basketball Rashon Burno coach officially announced his first recruiting class. It's an interesting class, both in terms of it's large size (seven players) and the mix of transfers and incoming freshman. It will certainly be an interesting year in DeKalb. Moving onto this weeks' spring sports segment, Zach and Sam first run down the post season awards in women's tennis, with Ball State's Max Norris winning coach of the year and Miami's Laura Rico winning player of the year. Congrats to both, as well as to the women that made first and second team all-MAC! Moving on to golf, both the men's and women's squads from Kent State represented the MAC in the NCAA tournament this past week. While the men started off strong, they unfortunately faded down the stretch and were not able to advance. The women, however, continued their incredible season by placing fifth in their regional, thus qualifying them for the NCAA Championships this weekend. We're all rooting for the Golden Flashes to bring home a title on Sunday! In baseball, Ball State and Central Michigan have really separated themselves over the past few weeks, and they currently sit tied atop the conference. Central Michigan did themselves no favors this weekend, dropping three of four from Western, while Ball State split four games with Kent State. With only two weeks left in the regular season, and no conference tournament this year, it will be interesting to see who finishes at the top of the mountain. In softball, the season has concluded. Miami enters the NCAA tournament this weekend as the MAC champion, and they take on Notre Dame this Friday in Lexington, Kentucky. After setting a program record with 46 wins this year, the Redhawks would love to advance. We'll see if Karli Spaid and company have the firepower to pull it off! As always, thanks for stopping by this week folks. If you're not already, follow us on Twitter at @MAC_Bandwagon for all of the latest MAC updates. Have a great weekend everyone! May is the most boring month on the college football calendar. Why is it so quiet, and what's happening during this period of relative calm? Steven Godfrey joins the program to explain. Additionally, Alex and Godfrey talk about Presbyterian's hire of famed "never punt/always onside kick" high school coach Kevin Kelley, what it suggests about where the sport is moving, and whether the industry will overreact if non-philosophical factors lead Kelley to struggle in that job. Then a discussion of the two similar yet very different programs in the FCS Championship, plus answers to questions on NIL and Congress, what Mike Gundy's eventual exit might look like, Pat Fitzgerald, public vs. private football programs, and Buffalo's hire of Maurice Linguist.
Sam Webb, Steve Lorenz, and Brice Marich discuss Maurice Linguist's departure and explain why it wasn't a sign of ill for the program. The crew then highlights the attributes Harbaugh prioritized in searching for a replacement. The podcast ends with an interview with the father of five-star offensive line target Josh Conerly about his son's recruitment and why Michigan suddenly has a more prominent place in it. EPISODE 13 Buffalo's search for a new head coach following Lance Leipold's departure has come to a quick, and fairly impressive, end after just a week of the job opening up. Maurice Linguist is Buffalo's new head coach and will be formally introduced Monday. While there's still a lot of work left for him to still do between now and the start of the upcoming football season, this doesn't seem like it's the kind of hire Buffalo scrambled around aimlessly for at the last minute. Linguist is a guy that has a year of NFL coaching experience under his belt, and is more than proven himself as a recruiter. Doesn't hurt that he actually knows the area, too.
