When Natalie was 13, she got the incredible opportunity to sing the national anthem at a Portland Trail Blazers game. She was ready, she had practiced – but when she stepped onto the court and started singing, she completely froze. She forgot the words. The crowd started cheering, trying to encourage her, but then something amazing happened. The team's coach, Mo Cheeks, walked right up beside her, gently reminded her of the words, and sang along with her until she finished. The entire arena erupted in applause. That moment could have ended in embarrassment, but instead, it became a picture of grace – someone stepping in right when she needed it. And isn't that what God does for us? When we fall short, He doesn't leave us there. He steps in, lifts us up, and walks with us to the finish. And here's the best part – years later, she was invited back to sing the anthem again. This time, she nailed it. And watching proudly from the crowd? Coach Mo."My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." –2 Corinthians 12:9

On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Editor-in-Chief Rob Thomas speaks with Monique “Mo” Gesualdi, PGA and LPGA Director of Instruction at St. John's Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla. Coach Mo was recently awarded the 2024 Troon Coach of the Year. She talks about her journey to becoming a golf coach and the health challenges she had to overcome in her 20s. Coach Mo emphasizes the importance of a holistic coaching approach that considers the physical, mental, emotional and nutritional aspects of a player. As a former high-level junior golfer herself, she believes she can relate to her students and guide them through the challenges they face. She also talks about her podcast, The Coach Mo Podcast, which features interviews with people from the golf industry. Coach Mo concludes the interview by expressing her excitement about the future of golf, with more girls and women getting involved in the sport. Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed Phil's just-concluded trip to Cragun's Resort and Cragun's Legacy Courses in Brainerd, Minn. The 84-year-old destination offers two golf courses — the Lehman 18 and the Dutch 27 — and a Par 3 course, as well as opportunities to enjoy fishing, kayaking, boating and other water sports, as well as land pursuits such as tennis, pickleball, beach volleyball, biking and hiking. Phil and a group of golf writers visited Cragun's and accompanied groups that played both courses. Each course was designed by the Lehman Design Group, headed by former World No.1 PGA Tour player Tom Lehman, a Minnesota native. The Dutch 27 has a pair of 9-hole layouts (Blue and White) that can be played today, and a third 9 (Red) that is expected to open for play in May 2025. The resort has a staff of more than 300 employees, offers 300 rooms, suites, cabins and homes to rent, and 62,000 sq. ft. of multi-function conference and exhibit space. On an annual basis, Cragun's records 100,000 guest nights, which equates to 40,000 unique guests. The resort hosts about 200 corporate or association groups and anywhere from 25 to 40 weddings each year. Phil will have a story about Cragun's for the September issue of Club + Resort Business. Phil and Rob also discussed projects happening at resorts in Arizona and California. The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch is nearing the completion of its $115 million renovation and will soon be rebranded as the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort. This project, expected to conclude in the coming weeks, will mark the debut of the first Grand Hyatt hotel in Arizona. The resort will feature six new restaurants, all developed in partnership with celebrity chef Richard Blais. These will include a modern Italian chophouse, a Southwestern grill, and two different poolside concepts. In addition to the new dining options, the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort will unveil its fully renovated meeting space in October. This includes the 14,000-sq.-ft. Vaquero Ballroom and 52,000 sq. ft. of existing indoor and outdoor function space. By January 2025, the resort will open its expanded Arizona Ballroom, nearly tripling its size to 25,000 sq. ft., aiming to become a premier venue for meetings and events in the region. Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif. will once again host the PGA Tour's Napa tournament, now renamed the Procore Championship Sept. 12-15. During the last couple of years, a lot of infrastructure improvement has happened at the site, including the introduction of 130 new golf carts, a $1.5 million investment in turf maintenance equipment, the conversion of 9.8 miles of asphalt cart paths into concrete paths, and the expansion of the driving range by 9,000 sq. ft.

Coach Mo sits down with her alma matter, the Furman Women's Golf Coaching Staff, Coach Jeff Hull, PGA, and Mackenzie Raim, aka Coach Mac to discuss all things about this Division I Program.  Furman, ranked in or slightly outside the Top-50 in Division I Women's Golf is a small liberal arts school with a reputation of a fantastic women's golf program. Incredible Hall-of-Famers and/or LPGA Players of the Year like Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie Pepper are former Furman Women's Golf grads as well as former Nike Golf Ceo, Cindy Davis.  2020 Annika Award Winner and former #1 college player in the USA, Natalie Srinivasian and now two-time Annika Watch-list player, who just earned her seventh career college victory, finds her name amongst the list of legendary women to come out of Furman.  What's even more incredible about Furman, is it's ability to develop really smart, academically strong girls who are average to above average junior golfers into much stronger players throughout the time at Furman.  Furman has one of the best golf facilities in the country, located right outside the back gate of campus. It's facilities include Bent and Bermuda grass greens, bunkers, indoor/outdoor facility, SAM Putt Studio, Trackman, Flightscope, Swing Catalyst, and an area to hit into an actual green from 200 yards and in.Furman's Jeff Hull is a former talented player himself for the University of Georgia, and Coach Mac a former three-time collegiate winner for UNLV, make-up the coaching staff. Coach Jeff is a PGA intructor and has a phenomenal sense of coaching the full-swing, while Coach Mac is referred to as the "short-game guru."  The team often collaborate with former Furman Women's Golf Alum, Dawn Woodard, who is now a mental performance coach and assists the team on their mental performance.  With all of this accessable and right on Furman's beautiful campus, players truly get the whole package as a student-athlete at Furman. Coach Mac and Coach Jeff answer Coach's Mo's questions as well as offer advice to players and parents throughout the recuriting process. Dawn returns to "The Coach Mo Golf Show" to take a deep dive into the Judgment Index and how players can utilize the assessment combined with her coaching to better understand and optimize the human within them. The better you understand the "why" of what you do and who you are, as well as those around you, you can create strategies to improve your preparation, your communication, and your decisions to help you improve both on and off the course.Dawn Woodard, Furman Women's Golf Alum, and expert Performance Consultant of, “Judgment Matters”  utilizes the Judgment Index assessment to help some of the top ACC, SEC, small powerhouse colleges as well as several professional athletes, including the former #1 Junior in the world, Mina Harigae, better understand themselves, their tendencies, and how their thinking ultimately affects their behavior and performance on and off the golf course.  Dawn works with athletes, parents, business professionals to maximize a player's decision-making and performance. Athletes and professionals are able to learn the WHY behind why they make the decision they do, gain perspective on how the athlete views themselves, and the what, who, why influences their decision making, and how they see the world. Once Dawn is able to identify how this help/hinders a player's performance, she can then create an affective and highly personalized performance strategy for the player, coach, and entire family to improve their performance.Dawn is a phenomenal athlete herself, a Furman Women's Golf Alum, 8x SC Women's Am Champion, & 3x Carolinas Player of the Year.  Dawn has competed in 39 USGA events, including 18 consecutive USGA Mid Ams, 3x USGA Mid-Am Medalist, 3x USGA Mid-Am Quarterfinalist.dawnwoodard@me.comwww.judgmentmatters.org@dawnwoodard10 Contact Coach Mo@coachmogolfprowww.coachmogolfpro.commgesualdi@stjohnsgolf.comThe Golf Academy at St. Johns Located at St. Johns Golf & CC in St. Augustine/St. Johns, FL@thegolfacademy_st.johnswww.stjohnsgolf.com

Let us pull you into our lively discussion where we analyze the Longhorns' performance, laud Maalik Murphy's abilities and dissect the synergies between Sark and Murphy. We also weigh in on the team's defensive strategies while candidly sharing our concerns about the red zone offense. The Big 12 Conference is stirring up, and we can't help but dig into that heap of surprises. We also touch upon the delicate subject of sportsmanship and how a single misstep can potentially blotch an athlete's career. Shifting gears, we take a peek into the Oklahoma State Cowboys' camp and their star running back. And for some levity, we share an amusing anecdote about a dog donning a cow costume. Now, let's talk about modern dating - a complex maze that we attempt to decipher through Steve Lee's experiences. Valerie Tyler Proves That Age Is Really Only A Number! The Only Limitations Are The Ones You Set For Yourself

Running is Cheaper Than Therapy

Valerie Tyler is one of my former coaches. She taught me how to swim and how to overcome my fear of the deep end of the pool. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Valerie has been active all her life but she only got to into Marathons at 50 on a dare. Over the next 20 years, Valerie has run 35 marathons qualifying for the Boston Marathon four times. She also got into triathlons, also on a dare, and after she taught herself how to swim, she started with sprints, Olympics, half-marathons and finally the full ironman. Currently, Valerie focuses on coaching other athletes wanting to promote good health to the next generation. Her business partner is Coach Mo, who was a previous guest here. She also helped start the Southside CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association).     Episode Highlights: Valerie the tomboy since childhood. Her motivation to remain active and help others. Valerie becomes a marathoner on a dare and her first marathon. Some memorable marathons, the good and the bad. She becomes involved in CARA Valerie becomes a triathlon athlete, again, on a dare. Some memories and tips from her experience with triathlons. Valerie is challenging herself to go to Big Shoulders. She talks about her coaching journey. Valerie shares some final words of inspiration. Guest Bio Growing up as a tomboy competing with her older brother, Valerie was always active physically. From baseball to climbing trees, to tag races, to monkey bars, to long jumps, and on and on. Then mud biking! Then she transitioned to African dance, ballet, and jazz. In between, tennis, roller skating, skiing, and aerobic classes. Whew!!!! Always active, always competing, and always challenging herself. Fast forward, she was dared to run a marathon at the age of 50. Why did that happen? Valerie really found her groove….so for the next 20 years, she ran 35 marathons all over the world and more ½ marathons than she can count. During that period, she also was approached by Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) to build a south side base leaving from LaRabida Hospital, so under pressure, Valerie founded that running group and built it up to 60 plus marathon members. During those 5 years of being the ‘Site Coordinator' for CARA South Side, she qualified for the Boston Marathon 4 times, and lead the 9:30 and 10-minute Pace Groups. Valerie was dared to race in Triathlons at the age of 52. Why did that happen? Over the years, she has participated in many, many Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and 1 Full Ironman. She learned to swim, earned her Life Savers Certification, and began coaching swim lessons with Chicago Blue Dolphins. Her first Ironman at the age of 67 was in Chattanooga, and she placed 2nd in her age group behind a woman that had done 9 and this was her 10th competition. What a proud moment to be on the Podium and invited to Kona!!!!! However, she was one and done. Ironman training was by far the most difficult, challenging, and mentally draining experience she had ever done. She was exhausted but exhilarated enough for a lifetime. In the past few years, Valerie has retired from Corporate America and earned certifications in Yoga, Personal Training, Fitness Training, and Nutritional Training. (She primarily follows a vegetarian diet with an emphasis on protein). She founded her own company, VTFit, 7 years ago and now teaches 40 minutes of strength training on Zoom 5X a week with a base of approximately 60 students, most of whom have been with her for more than 3 years. She has received numerous first and second-place age group awards and hundreds of medals from racing events of all types. As she moves into her senior years, Valerie feels the desire to extend herself and her energies into motivating and training the next generation. She was blessed to have an amazing racing career, and she wants to see more ‘people of color' pushing the envelope and representing the US in marathons and triathlons around the world. So, she continues to train – coaching swimming and track under the guidance of her stellar coach, Mo Wills, of Infinity Multisport. This game is about ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable' – his favorite saying. Her favorite mantras are;  (1) Keep It Moving and stay active.  (2) If I can set an example for a healthy lifestyle, my work is done!  (3) Be bold and live life to the fullest in love, health, spirit, family, and friends!!!!  (4) You can choose to be healthy and fit…it's a choice!
