Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio! This is Ypsilanti's college football show and the official podcast of Ypsi11.com.Eastern Michigan is off to a 2-1 start on the season, and it's not all roses. The Washington trip stung for not having scored any touchdowns. The Jacksonville State home opener definitely helped in that regard, but only for one half. By available yardage, EMU's clearly taken a big step up offensively and unnoticeably up from last year, albeit through three games played this year. The issues EMU has right now is affecting both sides of the ball: that damned injury bug. We'll follow suit here with the second of four MAC team(s) preview episodes.Miami, the defending champions, get to have two rivalries in this new pod structure. Paired with Ohio (Battle for the Bricks) and Ball State (Redbird Rivalry, sure), the RedHawks are favorites by many to make a repeat run for the MAC championship. Sure the team loses some important parts, but it's not right betting against a team that returns maybe the toughest quarterback in college football.Ohio and Ball State both have had some recent success — getting to (in Ohio's case in 2022) or even winning (like Ball State in 2020) the MAC championship game in recent years. And rightfully so. These are the players that highlight the program-defining moments (hello, wins at Illinois and Purdue) and help define very overlooked aspects of the game. Offense scores and defense makes stops, but special teams determine everybody's field position before those units hit the field. This year's going to be more of the same in that regard, but who expected EMU to get a 6-foot-4 corner through the HS ranks?Plenty of transfers can help supplement this team's depth, and maybe even start right away, but this defense should definitely see improvement with Joshua Scott back in action at cornerback. Daiquan White, who led EMU in pass breakups as a true freshman, also returns with big expectations. Also, if you need reasons to be blindly optimistic for former Division-III corners trying to make it at MAC level, I've got two words for you: Joe Burrow. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio; and welcome to Previews Weeks! Let's preview everything that EMU and the Mid-American Conference have to offer this season in the three weeks leading up to 2024's season kickoff. We are moving onto the defensive side of the ball in the second week of Previews Weeks, and we'll begin talking about guys who get dirty in the trenches.A lot of returning faces & starters with Justin Jefferson, Joseph Zelinsky, and Peyton Price all back with big hopes in 2024, but DL depth and ability might be what can take this defense to the next level. Last year it felt like EMU was off to a rough start with guys either getting hurt, staying hurt, or re-injuring themselves. If the freshmen in waiting are worth the wait and the new transfers on the edges are as good as advertised, then EMU could see an improved pass rushing grade this year.I've already circled Price's name, but I'll do it again here. He's an interior defensive lineman that has shined ever since he was a true freshman, but it's now or never for him if he's going to hit the ceiling that this coaching staff has been hoping to see from him. If he has a good season, then EMU's capable of having a very strong defense in 2024.Y11 Audio is available via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and basically wherever else podcasts are found.Reach out to the showSubstack newsletter: Ypsi11.comTwitter: @ARAlvarado13 | @YpsiElevenEmail: ypsieleven@gmail.com. Let's preview everything that EMU and the Mid-American Conference have to offer this season in the three weeks leading up to 2024's season kickoff.I'll say it now. Cole Snyder just might not be an automatic upgrade over Austin Smith.Sure, I trust he'll end up playing better football on the whole, but I can't promise you he'll be a much improved passer right away. I can't promise you, just by reading through some of the Pro Football Focus data, that he'll be a better option as a running QB either. Also, the NFL's preseason is actually underway now after two games played yesterday (and the Hall of Fame game last week). Chase Kline, who recently tried his shot at making an NFL team, is going to pursue a different opportunity via WWE Summerslam tryouts. Samson Evans and Jaylon Jackson, two uber-reliable players that could help move the football in more ways than one, are big losses for this program. Lots of new faces could help define how EMU moves past those struggles, but the main key objective, in my eye is pretty clear: don't get caught trying to chase ghosts. After the RBs, we focus the rest of our talk around the team's tight ends. Not every tight end develops into being the same product on the field because not every tight end comes into the program the same way. There are converted wide receivers, converted quarterbacks, and the standard sixth offensive lineman can always go out and try to catch a pass when defenses least expect it. Jere Getzinger's a quality senior to help make this offense work, but will the pass-catching tight ends end up being bigger factors in games this season? To help preview Previews Weeks, we'll go through each of the positions Monday through Thursday this and next week, and then have conference-wide previews in the the third week. Mitchell. The junior college product was able to be a difference maker in his cameo season with EMU as he built a working relationship with grad transfer QB Taylor Powell. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio; and welcome to Previews Weeks! Let's preview everything that EMU and the Mid-American Conference have to offer this season in the three weeks leading up to 2024's season kickoff.Yesterday we began this series by talking about the quarterbacks. But who's going to block for them?Last year's TFL allowed percentage of 11.07% was tenth-worst in the nation. Some of that had to do with poor performance from the QBs, but the O-line wasn't without its issues.Mickey Rewolinski returns as the most experienced lineman, but after that there isn't a lot of experience back. Broderick Roman's been with the team the longest out of this group, but his injury history doesn't provide a ton of confidence in how long he'll be able to hold up in 2024. Could this be a transfer-heavy line? Chris Mayo (West Virginia) and Carson Lee (Colorado) are returning former transfers that should see a lot of time this year, and Owen Snively (Colorado State) returns as well. Plus, four transfers joined the team this offseason to compete with some of the younger underclassmen that are still on roster. To help preview Previews Weeks, we'll go through each of the positions Monday through Thursday this and next week, and then have conference-wide previews in the the third week. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio! This is Ypsilanti's college football show and the official podcast of Ypsi11.com. It's another Saturdays w/ Coffin episode, here's the rundown:(0:17) Introduction; QB Jeremiah Salem was placed on scholarship after being a walk-on with the team for two years. Let's talk about the QB room again!(9:36) Missouri State is making the FCS-to-FBS jump, joining Conference USA in 2025. There aren't a lot of schools that I, Alex, would want to make the FCS-to-MACtion jump, but Missouri State was one of those schools on my personal shortlist. (21:11) EMU and Michigan have agreed to a pair of games played at the Big House in 2027 and 2030. Let's stick with the quarterback angle for a second. Is there anybody worth mentioning for these games that we haven't discussed already? (28:26) Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier expresses his opinion on how to fix the MAC level of college football. It's not a very original idea. He wants a separate “NIT-style” bracket for Group of 5 schools in addition to the ultimate prize that other teams will be playing for with tons and tons of more viewership. I'm just continually not sold that any of this will really fix anything, and any G5 team competing in these kinds of meaningful games will very likely just end up seeing their best players transfer out and their best coaches take new jobs anyway. That's just one man's opinion though. The goal wasn't to directly compete with ESPN's returning production percentage numbers, but it's another way to view your MAC teams during the spring ball.(13:54) What's every MAC team's biggest strength right now?(34:42) The playoff expansion model to 12-teams — a version that we'll never get to see before it even begins even though there were months of heartache over it — is changing its look. No more (not that it ever got to properly begin with) 6 highest-ranked conference champions and 6-highest ranked otherwise schools, it's now 5 conference winners + 7 automatic qualifiers. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio! This is Ypsilanti's college football show and the official podcast of Ypsi11.com.Here's something to look forward to this offseason: Saturday conversations between myself and Justin Coffin — formerly of Hustle Belt and MAC Football Pod fame. It won't be every single week, but the two of us will get together for regular conversations about the MAC's biggest topics. This week, we're focusing on Maurice Linguist's exit at Buffalo for Alabama. No, he's not going to be a head coach, he's leaving for a high-end assistant position. Is this the start of a new trend in the (arguably) wrong direction for MAC-level head coaches? Or is this the start of a very breakable cycle?Hopefully, MAC coaches can get more luck than what they've seen lately. Either way, Buffalo should feel pretty grateful for how Linguist was able to come into a difficult situation when Lance Leipold left for Kansas in late April 2021. Linguist wasn't the Bulls' coach until May, and right before he took the Buffalo job he was a recent hire to be Michigan's co-defensive coordinator. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio! This is Ypsilanti's college football podcast; read Ypsilanti's college football newsletter at Ypsi11.com.It's Week 0! College football is really this week! Ahead of last weekend, I previewed the MAC East with Justin Coffin (of MAC Football Pod). We continued our conversation into today's episode: the MAC West preview.Western Michigan (5:15) is going through a calculated coaching change that should force this team to be better at passing the ball. Will that work in Kalamazoo? Will that work in Year 1? Is Hayden Wolff, the Old Dominion transfer, going to be enough?Northern Illinois (13:34) is a program that will always have my respect, but will this team be any good if Rocky Lombardi doesn't get enough help?I've got a lot of questions on Central Michigan (21:03). I trust CMU to play good defense, but I have no clue what to expect out of the offense. Ball State (28:57) has as much potential as anybody in this division if things go right, but after last year's performance, it's hard to say which direction the program is truly heading in. The team we've all be waiting to talk so much about: Eastern Michigan (37:21). Under Chris Creighton, this program has a winning record and a chance to make the program's first MAC championship appearance. The death star: Toledo (45:12). The Rockets already have some preseason Top 25 votes, but it's still going to have to make some more believers out of voters. That'll begin with a tough road game against Illinois, then it'll be up to Toledo (as always) to not self-destruct its way out of a divisional race. This is Ypsilanti's college football show and the official podcast of Ypsi11.com.The 2023 college football season is only weeks away, so let's focus on each of the divisional races within the MAC. To help break down the MAC East race is Justin Coffin, formerly of Hustle Belt and Free on Saturday blogs, currently with MAC Football Pod (I should probably say that I'm also on that podcast.) Kent State (9:45) doesn't have a single starter returning to its offense, so it will take a lot for Kenni Burns to pick up his first career win. Under second-year head coach Joe Moorhead, Akron (15:30) is a squad that we really want to be optimistic for. It helps when Akron has such a talented QB on its side, too.Sure Buffalo (22:57) put up a 50 burger at Rynearson last year, but how much should the Bulls be feared heading into 2023? I'm confident the Bulls will be tough as nails, but I don't know how it'll string together wins in the second half of its MAC slate.Bowling Green (27:22) is a liar and I have no idea what to expect from the team this year. How many marginal improvements does BG really want to stay happy with?Last year's darling team is no secret this year. Ohio (34:37) has maybe the best offense in the MAC coming back, and Kurtis Rourke's bound to be a legit superstar in G5 football. Miami (40:17) has been as consistent as you can ask for, but now it has the best formula a MAC team can ask for: a 4th-year starting quarterback with a 10th-year, defensive-minded head coach. If Brett Gabbert stays healthy, Miami has the chance to have a monster season.Y11 Audio is available via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and basically wherever else podcasts are found.Reach out to the showTwitter: @ARAlvarado13 | @YpsiElevenEmail: ypsieleven@gmail.com. Still, I think this team looks really solid at wide receiver, linebacker, and interior defensive line. Also, last week EMU reached a new height on the recruiting trail. This unofficial title didn't last long, but EMU still got to see itself as having the MAC's #1 recruiting class for the current cycle. That moment has since passed and EMU stands as having the #4 class in the MAC, but it was still a first for a program that doesn't usually recruit to that level.Recent stories at Y11:Program-Setting Moment: Eastern Michigan Has MAC's Top-Ranked Recruiting ClassCan't Ask For Much More On First PracticeEMU Strong at Receiver, Linebacker Early on in Fall CampEastern Michigan OL: It Starts Up Front (But Who's Behind Them?)Y11 Audio is available via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and basically wherever else podcasts are found.Reach out to the showLeave a voicemail: 734-273-9224Twitter: @ARAlvarado13 | @YpsiElevenEmail: ypsieleven@gmail.com. Welcome to another episode of Y11 Audio!Personally, I (Alex) just moved back to Ypsilanti, so it's been nice to record this podcast in its rightful home of Y11HQ.Football season, I swear, is right around the corner. Media days are upon us but I have one big question for you. What are you looking forward to this year?I love so much about college football, I couldn't just narrow my answer down to one or two things. Let's look across the country and across the MAC and find some rooting interests. As for EMU, I'm excited to see the new quarterback and linebacker situations, and will the defense see improvement if one of its key players is healthy enough to play in 2022?Reach out to to the showLeave a voicemail: 734-273-9224.
