Serhii Plokhy explains that Anastas Mikoyan emerged as a voice of reason, having opposed the missiles from the start. As the U.S. blockade began, Khrushchev ordered missile-carrying ships to turn back, though one ship with nuclear warheads was ordered to proceed. Washington remained dangerously unaware of Soviet submarines armed with nuclear torpedoes and the true number of Soviet troops on the island. Kennedy privately admitted he felt he had "no choice" but to act, partly fearing impeachment. Dean Rusk famously noted that the Soviets "blinked" when their ships finally stopped. (5)1920

James Romm discusses his book Plato and the Tyrant. Syracuse emerged as an immensely powerful and prosperous state in the 4th century BCE under the rule of Dionysius the Elder. He rose to power as a demagogue by railing against elite leaders and was appointed general by the sympathetic masses. To secure his rule, Dionysius utilized the "Island," a peninsula fortress with a natural spring that made it impossible to starve out during a siege. Dionysius broke Greek custom by practicing polygamy, marrying two women on the same day to project a superhuman, royal image. This double marriage eventually sparked civil war and rivalry between his children. (1/8)1871
Stalin strategically delayed Operation Bagration until two weeks after D-Day, ensuring that the Western Allies would exhaust German forces first. Using American steel, fuel, and Studebaker trucks, the Red Army emerged as a massive, mechanized force capable of expanding Soviet dominance from Berlin to Beijing. Sean McMeekin explains that after the war, the U.S. facilitated this rise by arming Stalin's far eastern armies while cutting off aid to the Chinese Nationalists in 1946. Ultimately, Lend-Lease provided the mobility and resources—including butter and sugar—that created the conditions for the Soviet Union to emerge as a global superpower. (8/8)1900

he Rise and Fall of Early Ukrainian Statehood and the HolodomorFollowing the 1917 collapse of empires, two short-lived democratic Ukrainian republics emerged but were crushed by larger powers like Poland and the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin later solidified control through the Holodomor (1932-1933), a purposeful famine that killed millions of Ukrainians to break their resistance and fund Soviet industrialization. Stalin viewed Ukraine as a vital "breadbasket" and a security buffer against Western invasion. By 1945, though the landscape was devastated and its Jewish population largely annihilated, Moscow achieved its goal of total subordination, creating a myth of unified sacrifice. Chuck Todd dives into the Supreme Court's latest ruling further hollowing out the Voting Rights Act and walks through what it actually means in practice — including the very real possibility that several Southern states will now try to redistrict, creating a messy political landscape that won't necessarily benefit Republicans in the way they hope. He traces the history back to the 1990s Georgia reapportionment that led to major GOP pickups by packing Black Democratic voters into fewer districts, but warns this round of Southern redistricting will create more swing districts. He uses the moment to make the case for what he sees as the real structural fix to America's representation crisis: uncapping the House of Representatives to allow it to grow with population the way the founders originally intended, with Madison himself arguing the chamber would always need to expand. He argues that a bigger House would lower the barrier for third parties, minimize the outsized impact of the Electoral College, dramatically reduce the incentive to gerrymander — and crucially, this change wouldn't exclusively benefit either party. His framing is simple: stop fighting over the chairs at the table and increase the size of the table itself. He then pivots to what he calls the rise of the "woke right" — citing the second Comey indictment as exhibit A, noting that the right has now embraced exactly the kind of oversensitivity they once accused the left of engaging in, and pointing out it's no accident that Pam Bondi wouldn't bring the Comey case but Todd Blanche will. He flags that the FCC's attacks on Jimmy Kimmel will badly backfire, dismisses the Hegseth congressional hearing as a useless exercise where everyone was just chasing viral moments, and argues that Hegseth himself is suffering from a bad case of "internet brain" — actively politicizing the military while failing to make a coherent case for why the Iran war was ever necessary. He closes with a pointed observation about the entire administration: nobody around Trump believes any criticism of him is ever valid, and they appear to genuinely think voters are stupid enough to never notice. Finally, he answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment, weighs in on the DNC choosing NOT to release their 2024 autopsy, and reacts to the expansion on the NCAA basketball tournament. 3. Dr. Francis Townsend and Father Charles Coughlin emerged as major external pressures on Roosevelt's policy-making during the 1930s. Townsend's popular $200-a-month pension plan for seniors effectively forced FDR to introduce Social Security to neutralize the movement's growing political momentum. Meanwhile, Coughlin, a powerful "radio priest," transitioned from a Roosevelt supporter to a fierce critic after a failed reconciliation meeting at Hyde Park. Coughlin eventually teamed up with Townsend and Gerald L.K. Smith to form a third party, though these "amateur" politicians struggled to gain significant ballot access. 10. Flavio Bolsonaro Emerges as Leading Contender Against Lula GUEST: Ernesto Araujo, Alejandro Peña Esclusa SUMMARY: Flavio Bolsonaro has emerged as a top presidential contender, tying President Lula in polls. Lula's administration is currently plagued by massive corruption scandals involving $20 billion in social security fraud and money laundering.,, Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president, is now leading or tied with Lula in the polls by presenting himself as a "soft version" of his father's anti-corruption agenda. Meanwhile, Lula faces a $20 billion social security scandal involving his son, Lulinha, and an investigation into "Master Bank" for alleged money laundering. Although the Supreme Court has blocked some congressional probes, analysts anticipate a plea bargain from a jailed banker could further implicate Lula and his family in these multibillion-dollar schemes,. 2. Ptolemy I: The Architect of a Hybrid Greco-Egyptian EmpirePtolemy I, a general and scholar educated by Aristotle, emerged as the visionary founder of Egypt's final dynasty. Recognizing the strength of Egyptian civilization, he avoided treating the land as a mere conquest, instead blending Greek and Pharaonic cultures into a unique hybrid. Ptolemy expanded his empire to include Cyprus, parts of Turkey, and the Aegean islands, securing Egypt's status as a Mediterranean powerhouse. To unify his diverse subjects, he introduced the god Serapis, combining Greek imagery with Egyptian religious roots, establishing a legacy of cultural integration and administrative genius. (2)MINOAN

For years, we've talked about the world order 'shifting.' Changing. The end of the Bretton Woods agreement, But according to legendary investor Ray Dalio, the shift is over. The break is now here.In a massive new piece Dalio just released—following the 2026 Munich Security Conference—he made it official: **The post-1945 world order has broken down.** We have officially entered what he calls "Stage 6' of the Big Cycle."Historically, Stage 6 is the 'War Stage.' It's the period of 'Great Disorder' where rules are replaced by raw power, where debt cycles reach their breaking point, and where the global map is redrawn. We're seeing it in the 'Capital Wars,' the weaponization of the dollar, and the total breakdown of trust in traditional institutions.

In this episode of Oldest Stories, we step back from the famous conquests of the Neo-Assyrian Empire to ask a more fundamental question: what did ancient warfare actually look like on the ground, and how did the Assyrian army emerge from thousands of years of evolving combat traditions? Focusing on the world that produced the Sargonid military system, this episode examines the deep origins of organized warfare in Mesopotamia, from tribal raiding and Bronze Age spear lines to the psychological mechanics of close-order combat.Rather than starting with siege engines, cavalry, or elite archers, this episode explores the forgotten core of ancient war: spear and shield formations, skirmishers, early missile troops, and the human fear dynamics that governed how battles were fought long before gunpowder. Drawing on archaeology, art, and written sources, it traces how stone-age raiding gave way to Bronze Age mass formations, how copper and bronze transformed lethality, and why settled societies developed fundamentally different military solutions than nomadic peoples. The episode also explores why chariots dominated the Near East for centuries, how massed missile fire and mobility eventually broke their supremacy, and why the Iron Age battlefield became increasingly archer-centric. Along the way, it challenges modern assumptions shaped by reenactment, popular media, and strategy games, and argues that much of what we think we know about ancient melee combat is far more uncertain than commonly admitted.By the time Sargon II inherits the Assyrian throne, the Near East is saturated with every major pre-gunpowder warfare paradigm at once: tribal raiding, mass infantry lines, chariot elites, archers, cavalry, and logistical warfare. This episode sets the stage for understanding why the Neo-Assyrian army was not simply brutal or technologically advanced, but uniquely adapted to a specific and highly complex threat environment. This is the first part of a multi-episode exploration of the Assyrian military system, laying the conceptual and historical groundwork for a detailed examination of how the Sargonid army actually functioned in battle. If you are interested in ancient warfare, Assyrian history, Bronze and Iron Age combat, or the realities behind spear and shield fighting, this episode provides essential context.I am also doing daily history facts again, at least until I run out of time again. On Wednesday, an ICE agent killed a woman in her vehicle on the streets of Minneapolis. She was reportedly a U.S. citizen. But then President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made their own conduct even more damning by blaming the victim and insisting the officer acted out of legitimate self-defense. The video Trump posted didn't come close to supporting his claims. Other videos strongly suggested the officer wasn't at all in a life-threatening situation and that lethal force was in no way justified, and Minnesota officials vehemently backed that up. DHS officials then leaked that the agent had violated use-of-force protocol. We talked to New Republic contributing editor Felipe De La Hoz, who writes well about ICE accountability. DIY Snake Catching Classes Emerge Jeremy Zakis Due to a massive snake population boom and a forthcoming shortage of retiring professionals, a new industry offering DIY snake wrangling training has emerged in Australia. Courses, like one run by Dr. Christina Zenck in Queensland, teach people to safely handle dangerous species, such as brown snakes, using specialized snare poles. This training is crucial because killing protected snakes is illegal.

3. Post-Revolution Collapse, Failed Statehood, and the Holodomor Following the collapse of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires after World War I, Ukrainians sought independence. The Ukrainian People's Republic emerged from the Russian collapse as a democratic state with liberal policies. However, it quickly collapsed internally, as its bureaucrats were heavily Russified, and externally, as various Russian armies (communist, monarchist, or liberal) immediately invaded, united by the belief that Ukraine must be part of Russia. Separately, the West Ukrainian People's Republic was defeated and incorporated into Poland. Later, Stalin, fearing internal Ukrainian dissent and needing grain exports for military modernization, implemented forced collectivization. This led to the purposeful famine of the Holodomor (1932-1933), resulting in deaths of an estimated 3.5 to 5 million people. This tragedy served Stalin's goal of breaking the backbone of the Ukrainian peasantry to secure the region before World War II devastated the landscape.

A-BLOCK (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: TRUMP SUDDENLY SPECULATES ABOUT LIFE WITHOUT HIM: From anybody else it would be trivia. From Trump this is startling. Buried in an ordinary narcissistic flight: "It'll be very unfair in the future when they (Republicans) don't have Trump to fight for them." That quote, might be the biggest headline Trump has made this year and it sailed RIGHT past the American news media yesterday. What in the HELL did he mean by that and more importantly why did he suddenly acknowledge there is an end, maybe soon? After being MIA for five days – no live public viewing of him, just one video that according to White House time stamps took more than two hours to produce even though it only required him to try to speak for a minute-ten… he EMERGED with what was, even for him, such an utterly bizarre and especially vulnerable admission. He was out of view for FIVE DAYS. FIVE. From that bizarre “please clap” speech before the Generals at Quantico on Tuesday – the Pete Hegseth International Day of Military Hair Care Symposium and Product Sampling – through yesterday morning when he managed to stagger out of the White House, blast a series of non sequitirs at the press pool, and then go to another military celebration for which we have the money even in the middle of his shutdown of the government. Nobody asked: HOW have you been, WHERE have you been, WHAT are they treating you for, WHAT does that "when they don't have (you) to fight for them" quote mean? Because again, as in the week he went MIA at the beginning of LAST month, nobody had a clue what would take a man with compulsive talking disease and an ego so large it has own it zip code, from appearing in front of crowds and cameras for FIVE DAYS. And THEN Trump went in front of the Navy and said he warned about Osama Bin Laden last year, and told Pete Hegseth about it a year before 9/11, and claimed he was president in 2016 but they fixed the 2016 election, but they ran it again and he "got 250." What. In The Hell. Is Wrong. With Trump’s Health? B-Block (27:44) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A $1 Trump coin? Ten cents per chin? Ian Miles Cheong doesn't think they'll eat his face. Noem and Lewandowski think they'll find undocumented immigrants attending the Super Bowl. And Kristi really has to go to the toilet. THIS IS OFFICIAL BUSINESS! C-Block (38:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Well, here we are. Fifty years ago Tuesday night, at 11:15 PM, I did my first broadcast on an actual radio station with advertisers and listeners. I was 16 and it's not bad for 16 and for the fact that my much older colleagues at WVBR-FM did a superb job of hazing me. And yes, that first broadcast is still extant, as you'll hear.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
