Meet Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, otherwise known as the White Death. By the time the Winter War finished in March 1940, he'd taken down over 500 Soviet soldiers all on his own, crowning him the deadliest sniper to have ever lived. Yet, despite the awesome achievement of this man, his story isn't widely known. So, who really was Simo Häyhä, and how did he become the deadliest sniper the world has ever seen? Send us Fan MailEpisode 258In the frozen forests of northern Europe, where winter silence stretches for miles and the horizon disappears into endless white, one man became a ghost. His name was Simo Häyhä.To his enemies, he was something else entirely—The White Death.During the bitter months of the Winter War, as the vastly outnumbered nation of Finland fought for survival against the might of the Soviet Union, Häyhä moved silently through snow-covered forests, dressed head to toe in white. There were no grand speeches, no dramatic charges—just patience, precision, and an almost unnatural stillness. What followed would become the stuff of legend. In just over 100 days, Häyhä is believed to have recorded more confirmed kills than any sniper in history. No scope. No spotlight. No theatrics. Just a rifle, a steady hand, and an understanding of the land so deep it seemed as if the forest itself was fighting alongside him.But this is not just a story of numbers. It is a story of isolation, of endurance, and of a quiet man shaped by the harsh rhythms of rural life—long before the war ever began. A farmer. A hunter. A man who knew how to disappear.Because legends are rarely born in comfort. They are forged in extremes. And in the brutal winter of 1939, as temperatures dropped to unimaginable lows and the world's attention turned elsewhere, one man would leave an imprint on history as cold and enduring as the snow beneath his feet. This is the story of Simo Häyhä— the man who became a myth, and the myth who became The White Death.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com
Olivier Norek says he has never met a killer who wasn't eaten inside by what they'd done. Before he became a writer, Norek was a policeman in the most dangerous parts of Paris and a humanitarian worker in the former Yugoslavia. On Free State today, Norek tells the story of Simo Hayha, the sniper known as the White Death, who fought for Finland during the Winter War when the Soviet Union invaded the country. He tells the story of how Finland, abandoned by the world to fight alone, stood against the Red Army, fighting for their communities.Norek researches his books the way he would investigate a crime and in preparation for the Winter Warriors, he spent a winter in Finland, experiencing the subzero temperatures in which Finns fought to defend their country. He tells us what the Winter War meant to Finland and how it shaped the world we live in today. Picking up where we last left off, the Tempests returned to the continent of Drago to find an old friend, and to commit a wee bit'o genocide. After a short stint in High Tide to give their sentient cart Cassie some upgrades, they headed inland to the Orc Tribe's territory. Their guide, Bogbo, led them north along the foot of the mountains to find the Mountaintooth clan, who were widely regarded as the smartest group of greenskins. Though irritating, the Mountaintooth Chieftain gave them directions on where to find a so-called 'White Death' that was new to the area and was causing them some strife, namely displacing an infamous creature known as an Aashkaht. Tracking the White Death to 'The Old Vein', an abandoned mine owned by the Mountaintooth clan, they discovered that this new beastie was their resurrected friend Hambjerger: A murderous little velociraptor and forever friend and companion of Pez. Returning to Cassie, the Tempests found that she was under attack by an Aashkaht and quickly leapt to her rescue. Though it was a formidable beast, it was no match for the Tempests and Hambjerger who seems to have gained the ability to grow in size. We rejoin the Tempests now as they return to the Mountaintooth Clan after slaying the Aashkaht and night begins to fall. We have merch! Last we left off, the Tempests returned to Drago, making a lengthy pitstop in High Tide, the pirate stronghold, to make a few upgrades to their sentient wagon before heading off into the Orc Lands. After almost a week of waiting, everything was set for the next leg of their adventure, with Cassie gaining six new legs to play with! They headed across the mountains with Bogbo as their guide and very quickly came upon signs of a legendary beast's territory: the Aashkaht. But the Tempests weren't about to let a mythical beast slow them down. No sir! Onward they traveled in search of the nearest Orc encampment belonging to the Mountaintooth Clan. Though they arrived late in the evening, the Tempests were allowed to stay outside the clan's settlement until the morning, wherein they encountered a rather unpleasant goblin chief, Clorm. After numerous threats of putting the goblin in Lakin's soul cage, they learned of another creature encroaching on the Aashkaht's territory, causing the fire beast to travel further south and harass the Mountaintooth clan. Based on the vague descriptions given, the Tempests assumed it was their kobold's reincarnated companion Hambjerger and set off to see if this was, in fact, their little velociraptor. We rejoin them now as they head further north in search of 'The Old Vein', a mine that this White Death had taken as their lair. We have merch! Send us a textA limestone mansion built to defy the prairie became a vessel for sorrow—and then a sanctuary. We take you inside Dodge City's Home of Stone, from John Mueller's audacious rise and the black walnut staircase that flaunted prosperity, to the winter they called the White Death that buried a cattle empire under ice. Amid ruin, another story took hold: Caroline's quiet grief, a nursery that never warmed, a rocking chair that swayed without wind, and a whisper that sounded like a child who didn't get to grow up.When the Schmidts moved in, the house learned new rhythms—electric light, hot bread, children's laughter—until a visiting boy tumbled down the staircase and said another child pushed him. Instead of fleeing, Elizabeth Schmidt opened the town's memory, reading county ledgers and finding the Mueller graves that numbers can't account for. Elma saw the silent boy in the wavering lamplight, pointing to the nursery, to his heart, and out across the endless plains—a pantomime of loss that didn't need words. The answer wasn't force; it was recognition. In the basement, a trunk with faded initials held a small carved wooden horse, smooth from a child's hands. Placed on the parlor mantel—the warm center of the home—the toy changed the house's weather. The chill lifted. Doors stilled. What remained felt like a guardian more than a ghost. Across decades, the Home of Stone became a living museum of Dodge City's true legacy: not just gun smoke and cattle drives, but the durable courage of pioneer mothers and the quiet rituals that heal places. If this story moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves haunted history, and leave a review telling us the object you'd place on your mantel to honor a forgotten story.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.

We are bringing you the second part of our discussion of tuberculosis. This episode reviews the illness a bit but delves into some of the treatments attempted in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. This includes the institutions known as sanitariums (one starting in a cave, strangely enough) where tuberculosis patients (who could afford to) would travel for treatment regimens including routine sunning and fresh air sessions as well as rest and what was deemed as good nutrition. This was also a way to isolate those with the disease to keep them from spreading it. Some of these institutions were not the "health spas" they were made out to be, abusing, neglecting, and experimenting on patients instead. We finally reach the discovery of antibiotics and possible vaccines and cures that were met with both joy and cynicism. Since the first use of these antibiotics, which were miraculous for the time for sure, more have been created to fight the illness more effectively, especially with antibiotic resistant strains becoming a problem. Lets travel through time and revisit the horrors of this illness, the petty disputes and drama of some of the scientists involved in trying to stop it, and the discovery of what worked. I have wanted to discuss an illness so old and vile, it has made its mark on all of society and culture throughout centuries of its gruesome existence. Tuberculosis was also called the wasting disease, consumption, and the "white death," among other things and has plagued humanity for thousands of years. Lets look at its history and effects on societies and cultures throughout the world and how it finally became recognized as a bacterial infection (a vicious one at that). It eats away at the lungs and beyond as it can affect every organ system of the body and kills gradually. We'll discuss some of the more superstition reasoning for the disease given by earlier societies and the gruesome methods they tried to cure it. We also cannot talk about tuberculosis without mentioning its impact on fashion and beauty standards (yes you read that right) especially among the Victorians. This is too big a topic and too old a disease to not make into two parts! So lets get into it! Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! Our first episode of 2024 covers two records from the waning days of 2023 which have received a lot of attention from our fanbase. Flaming Ouroboros has finally dropped their much-anticipated debut full length- is it a new heigh for outlaw rock, or does it slip over the edge in its dangerous dance with emo? In the other corner, the return of Finnish stalwarts White Death- is their sophomore release a powerful return to traditional Finnish black metal, or merely an exercise in self-congratulation? This is episode 9 and we're swinging back to the Karelian Isthmus to focus on what was going on through the third week of January 1940. Earlier in the month the disgraced Soviet Leningrad Military district was reformed and renamed the Northwestern Front and Stalin installed Semyon Konstantinovich Timoshenko as the commander. He was a hard man, flinty eyes, shaven head, powerful voice — a tough man for a tough job. Timoshenko was an idealogue but no fool and agreed to lead the Northwestern Front assaults but only if Stalin agreed that he would not be held personally liable for the coming butcher's bill. Cracking the Mannerheim Line along the Isthmus was going to be challenging after more than a month of battles had shown the Finns to be more than a match for the Red Army. Timoshenko's chief of staff was the architect of the Russian victory over the Japanese in Mongolia, Georgi Zhukov. The Leningrad commander Zhdanov was demoted to political commissar of the campaign, without any operational power at all. He had been roundly defeated by the Finns since the start of the Winter War in November 1939 and now his message to the troops on the frontline changed. Previously Russian propaganda had centred around the narrative that the Finnish working class needed saving, now Zhdanov was going to focus on Russian patriotism and pride instead of the drum-beat of party slogans. The country had been shamed in the eyes of the world and needed to redeem itself and the Northwestern Front fighters were going to be at the forefront of this reformed war. When the Red Army returned to the Mannerheim line in early February the men were going to be shouting “For the glory of the Fatherland” not “For Stalin”. While things were looking ominous, there was much for the Finns to savour. One of these was the extraordinary Simo Hayha, the White Death as he became known. He was a sniper, some say the most lethal sniper to have ever lived. He served with the 6th Company 34th infantry regiment and was based on the Kollaa Front. Hayha's confirmed kills of 542 Russians in the space of 100 days has never been eclipsed. He passed the rest of his life hunting and farming, and the White Death died in April 2002 at the age of 97. "The White Death," Simo Hayha was just an ordinary Finnish farmer that somehow ended up recording more confirmed kills than any other sniper in military history. In this episode Ben and Pat discuss how this ordinary dude from Finland became the deadliest soldier ever recorded.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Land of a Thousand Lakes, is the famous moniker for this nation, but there is so much more to this nation than its geographical features. With a history dating back over 5000 years, with many different people groups figuring out how to survive in this frigid tundra. This nation has weathered some of history's must brutal eras from the reign of the Hanseatic League to the Soviet Regime. In recent memory this nation has left a permanent mark in the tech industry, and made its culture a mainstay in European media. This is all without mentioning the legendary "White Death". This is Finland.
It's a bit late - had a great event on Japanese whisky last night! ----------- How much do you know about Finland? Yep, probably about the same I did. Not much. Turns out, there's a whole lot to learn. I started, oddly enough, with a well-timed episode of Timesuck learning about the sniper known as the White Death from the Winter War of WW2. Besides a fascinating story, it taught me that Finland is both Nordic and Scandinavian, yet its culture - everything from its mythology/pantheon to its drinking culture - are closer to Germany and Russia than to Sweden or Denmark. Teerenpeli is a symbol of that identity. Fiercely independent, making whisky where few others are (they're the only active distillery making whisky in Finland!), Teerenpeli is out to prove that Finland has a lot to offer the world whisky community. I think they just might. Brad Pitt stars in this fast-paced (literally) action comedy from director David Leitch who previously helmed Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. It almost entirely takes place on a high speed train barreling through Japan which has some antagonistic passengers to say the least. Among them are a group of assassins who each seem to have different missions but involving the same set of people, mainly a local crime organization lead by the feared gangster White Death. There's also a valuable suitcase onboard filled with money that every one seems to want and will kill for…..and chaos ensues! This film also co-stars Bryan Tyee Henry, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, Hiroyuki Sanada, and a slew of surprise cameos….if you have haven't already trailers mind you.
Simo Häyhä tormented Soviet forces invading his native Finland between December 1939 and March 1940, killing 542 enemy soldiers in only 98 days. In the hostile, minus forty degree conditions of the Finnish winter of 1939-40, a man clad all in white lay with packed snow mounded in front of him as he awaited his enemy. The man was Simo Häyhä and he was armed with only a regulation, bolt action rifle – he preferred the standard sight as it could not fog over or catch the light and was less conspicuous than a telescopic sight. Next to him lay his sub-machinegun and he was no less deadly with that weapon. During the Winter War, Häyhä accurate sniper fire would account for almost an entire battalion of Russian soldiers.
