Playwrights and RSC artistic directors Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor discuss the updates they've been making to all their scripts (including All the Great Books (abridged), featuring Doug Harvey, Tré Zijuan Tyler, and Michael Faulkner, below) and how their writing process begins with coming up with material that's personal resonant. Martin and Tichenor reveal the despair of artists listening to the mortgage when evaluating their work; how not all laughs are created equal; how the great job of making people laugh now feels like an supremely important job; and how hearing the audience gasp at the turns in the narrative is even more satisfying to us. Michael and I sat down for an episode that serves as both an exploration of his mellifluous creation of Your Labour, as well as a brief overview of his trajectory, plotting his ascent from Connecticut Hardcore kid to Indie Punk glory, playing in Nigel 6 and the legendary Damn Personals. Michael is the consummate Independent artist, forgoing the arduous process of assembling a group and relying solely upon himself. Your Labour is both indie pop bliss and Darkwave dirge, pushed through a prism of low end rumble and alternative rock swagger. This is outsider art at it's most beautiful, summoning early U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, Prince, and Lucky Pierre/Prick. Michael's music can be found on Instagram @your_labour, Spotify, yourlabour.bandcamp.com, YouTube.com your labour, plus on the Darkness Calling compilation which can be summoned via darkness calling.bandcamp.com as well as Instagram/DarknessCallingOfficial. Mike Faulkner and Amanda Pajer join us from Los Angeles, California. The talented pair write and produce from their home studio, and have released splendid music created during lockdown. They rose above the pandemic blues to refocus and pursue long-buried dreams: releasing originals from home. When the world needs hope, these songs provide solace and release, positivity and an outlet for angst. Their music varies from indie-rock, new-wave, electro and dream-pop, to alternative down tempo/Lo-Fi music. Song & Video Credits - Mike and Mandy are producer-writer-husband Michael Faulkner and singer-songwriter Amanda Pajer. https://youtu.be/qdgmD3Yqv4Mhttps://youtu.be/cfyzJtR-MRo After performing and making videos of a slew of covers, "Ricochet" is their debut original single. It sums up collective COVID angst and expresses it as a bumper car ride while the main character heads for rock bottom. It's the story of a single mother on a downward spiral, alongside a concerned school principal and a shady uber driver. She's clearly headed for a crash. And we can't help but listen. Episode 1 The Summoning of Every Man (40 min.) Comfort, humor, and hope for the holidays. In the Middle Ages, life was spare and fleeting. Cautionary Christian lessons of Salvation, and stories of the glories of Eternal Life were taught to the illiterate – but not unintelligent – populace, not only in sermons, but also in the comforting symbolism of liturgy, stained glass windows, and Morality and Mystery plays. Everyman is a joyous and mysterious play, originally Flemish, adapted from the English "York Cycle" by Lance Davis. Performed by Lance Davis. Introduction by Michael Faulkner. Music by Tom Peters. Golden Retriever Breed Education with Michael Faulkner In honor of the Golden Retriever National Specialty, currently under way in Southern California, Host Laura Reeves visits with legendary judge and breeder Michael Faulkner. Actively involved with Goldens since 1969, Faulkner is deeply passionate about his breed. Primarily a hunting dog “This is the GOLDEN Retriever,” Faulkner said. “They have a coat of lustrous gold, they are a water dog, their form and function is to retrieve. “The standard says ‘primarily a hunting dog,’ moderate, to be shown in good, hard working condition,” Faulkner said “Yellow Wavy Coated Retrievers” The double coat protects and wraps the body, Faulkner said. Early historians talk about the development in Scotland of “https://www.grca.org/about-the-breed/breed-history/origin-of-the-yellow-retriever/ (yellow, wavy coated retrievers).” “Quite often when you’re judging my breed you’re going to see a coat that wraps the body and it may have a slight wave. That’s perfect. We love it when you can see the natural wrap and frame. The coat should never be curly, but wave is perfectly acceptable,” Faulkner said. Moderation in all things Faulkner compares the correct Golden Retriever to a cow: “Moderate, legs underneath them, big rib cage, short loin, level back, thick thigh, tail straight off the back. It’s not a complicated breed.” A well-known stickler and “old guard” in the breed, Faulkner insists that Goldens were never meant to be “fluffy” and that they “should not look like a baby Newfy.” Proportions are the biggest thing next to grooming, Faulkner said. The https://images.akc.org/pdf/breeds/standards/GoldenRetriever.pdf (breed standard) calls for the body to be [12:11], just off square. They should never be long and low. Gentleman’s gun dog “The dogs are not supposed to roll, or lumber (when they move),” Faulkner said. “They are supposed to converge to the center line of travel. People forget that they are supposed to be primarily a hunting dog. “They were kept by the nobility. Bred to go out with the hunter, work close to their side, bring the bird back, shake dry and lie next to fire.” The cold water and rocky terrain of the breed’s native Scotland made endurance essential, Faulkner noted. Any exaggeration would hinder the working dog’s efficiency. Pure Dog Talk is sponsored by: Support this podcast
Meet Doug Harvey (center, above), the newest member of the RSC and also the author and star of the one-man show The Time Traveler’s Guide to the Present, which earlier this summer won the Paul Koslo Memorial / MET Theatre Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Doug reveals his RSC origin story and shares some live musical spaghettification; his feelings about the need for adventure and more shows about science; how a one-man show became a sci-fi romance; day gigs at LA’s Griffith Observatory; references to the darkest timelines; a couple of harmonizing triads; the Michael Faulkner conduit; growing up with Bay Area theatre like California Shakespeare Company and American Conservatory Theatre; tales of successful auditions; the importance of serious clowning; and the answer to the ultimate question: What’s the closest we have to a time machine? Not a Delorean, not Bill and Ted’s phone booth, but...a theatre. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] returns for its first US tour in almost ten years! Two of our actors prepared for the tour by performing un-reduced Shakespeare this summer: Michael Faulkner (above, right) performed in Othello and the Two Noble Kinsmen for Kingsmen Shakespeare Company in Thousand Oaks, CA, while Jeff Marlow (above, left) played three roles in the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles production of Henry IV, which featured a young up-and-comer named Tom Hanks as Falstaff. Michael and Jeff discuss the importance of calf exercises, the strengths and limitations of LPMs (Laughs Per Minute) as an appropriate barometer, actor shorthand, honoring laughs, opening doors for yourself, unlikely expectations, the magic of theatrical alchemy, and the wonderful relationship between performing actual full-length Shakespeare — and then reducing it. We resurrected The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) for its first American performance in almost four years and this cast's first performance in more than eight. After the raucous standing ovation, Dominic Conti (center), Reed Martin, and Austin Tichenor talk about what it's like returning to a show after such a long absence, and what it means, personally, to perform this particular show. Featuring testaments old and new, civilized rehearsing, born-again favorites, missing trunks, Catholic raves, recreating a fourth dummy, consoling the ignorant, remembering kerfuffles, begging Michael Faulkner (right), and happiest of all, celebrating the Bible through joy and laughter. Helen Mark goes to Strangford Lough, one of the richest marine environments within the United Kingdom, to meet the people who love its isolation and beauty. She talks to Michael Faulkner who moved to Islandmore on the Lough after his business collapsed. For him and his wife, living alone on the island was a time to reflect. This was also the place Michael's father escaped to for family holidays. He was Brian Faulkner, the last Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from 1971-72, who presided over some of Ulster's most tumultuous times. To find out about the wildlife of the lough, Helen meets Andrew Upton, manager with the National Trust and a keen bird watcher. Helen finishes her day listening to flute player Ben Healey who is keen to keep the heritage of Irish music alive. These are some of the people who work, play and rest on Strangford Lough. Produced in Bristol by Perminder Khatkar.
